Rate this book
Plus-sized PI Savannah Reid doesn't shy away from high-profile cases with the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency. But when an upscale party ends with murder, drawing clues from famous guests may prove trickier than squeezing into an old pair of jeans...

For the first time in recent memory, Savannah has no guilt about indulging in personal interests before her career. Between being a mom to her new foster son and arranging a lavish wedding for her sister, things are messy, unpredictable, and delightfully fulfilling. She even gains an impressive friend: Dr. Carolyn Erling, a caring veterinarian with a deeper story than her down-to-earth nature suggests . . .

When Savannah attends a birthday bash for Dr. Carolyn's husband, she's astonished to find that her no-frills acquaintance resides in a pristine hilltop mansion with Dr. Stephen Erling, a jet-setter brain surgeon boasting throngs of A-list patients around the globe. Before Savannah can get a headcount on the mingling celebrities, Dr. Stephen has one too many champagne toasts and drops dead.

With a poisonous residue found inside Dr. Stephen's glass, the search is on for the killer who spiked his drink. Motivated to set things right for a devastated Dr. Carolyn, Savannah must infiltrate the elite world of foreign dignitaries and Oscar-winning stars to identify the guilty culprit--or prepare to kiss this happy chapter in her life goodbye.

Savannah Reid is and her detective husband, Dirk, are adjusting to having their foster son living with them. He is helping out at a veterinary clinic and Savannah and family are invited to the veterinarian, Dr. Carolyn's, husbands birthday. A murder occurs at the home while they are there. Carolyn's husband dies under suspicious circumstances and Carolyn hires Savannah and her detective agency so find out who killed him.
I really enjoy this series. It is so warm and inviting. I love the characters. It is so fun to see how the series and characters have progressed . Savannah is a great lead character. I love the interactions between her and her foster son Brody. I love seeing her and Dirk as parents.

The mystery was good. I wasn't surprised by the who the killer was.. I liked the overall story and am excited to read more in the series.

A Few Drops of Bitters by G. A. McKevett is the 26th book in the Savannah Reid Mystery series, and another great addition. I love this series, and reading a new book is like visiting old friends. Savannah is a private investigator who owns the Midnight Magnolia Detective Agency and her husband Dirk, is a police detective. While attending a birthday party with their foster son, the birthday boy, a jet set Dr, drops dead at the party, and the investigation begins. There are twists and turns around every corner. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, and I love the addition of their foster son, what a hoot he it. If you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend this book and series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This has become too much folksy chit-chat and not enough detecting for my tastes. I may not read any more, which is too bad--I really enjoyed these books at the beginning. It also bothers me that no one has thought to put that poor boy they're fostering in therapy!

I love Savannah and Granny Reid. They are two of my favorite characters in any cozy series. In the latest book in the “A Savahhah Reid Mystery” series, A Few Drops of Bitters Savannah, who is a PI, is present when a murder takes place at a famous doctor’s birthday party, and no one will miss him. It becomes evident that the doctor was poisoned, and many people had a motive to want him dead. Savannah has no choice but to take on the case, even before she is asked when his wife and idol of Brody’s is accused of murder.

Everyone present at the party is on Savannah’s suspect list, and even as a PI, she may be on that list too, as far as the police are concerned. No one liked the doctor, not even Savannah, even her foster son Brody, who doesn’t hate anyone, seems to have a distrust of the doctor. Most of the evidence points to the doctor’s wife, a veterinarian whom Brody idolizes, and Savannah calls friend. There are plenty of twists and turns and moments when Savannah isn’t sure who to trust, other than her husband and Granny. To add to her stress, her sister Alma’s wedding is coming up, and she feels as though she is letting her little sister down. The investigation takes Savannah down roads she may not want to go down but are necessary to catch a murderer. Between murder and family, Savannah has a lot on her plate, but she’s used to it, and with dogged determination and a bit of luck, she finds the killer. The culprit may surprise readers, but the identity adds that unique little twist that a good mystery needs to be great.

Like most of the books in this series, this one is emotionally charged. It’s more about relationships and what makes us who we are than a murder. Savannah had a hard childhood, as did Granny and Brody. A hard life is what makes Savannah a great PI, wife, mother, and human being. It’s not necessary for readers to have read every book in this series, although I would suggest they do so for pure pleasure. This series has always had the ability to make readers feel emotions they weren’t expecting, and crying happy tears as you turn the last page is a part of the story. A Few Drops of Bitters is a study in relationships. It is filled with lessons in humanity, kindness, and love.

"You better live in fear, Savannah girl.

A visit with Savannah Reid and the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency never disappoints. I must admit that I haven't read one of this series in a long time. I will definitely remedy that! I have missed out on so much that I need to catch up.

Savannah and Dirk are fostering 6 year old Brody Greyson. Brody volunteers with Dr. Carolyn at her veterinarian office. He wheedles an invitation to a fancy party at which Dr. Carolyn's husband dies. Dr. Carolyn hires Savannah to discover what happened even though Dirk is on the case.

Savannah is one of my favorite characters. I love the strong, independent woman she has become. Having Granny Reid nearby is amazing. It was nice to not have all of her bickering family present in this story. I did love that sweet Alma got to have her fairytale wedding with her Prince Charming.

Savannah has really taken to being a mom. That was evident throughout the plot. Brody is wise beyond his years. I really need to go back and see where he was introduced.

One of the best things about this series is that you can pick up any of the books and still know what is going on with the characters. Reading Granny's crossover series helps as well.

I was not terribly surprised about the culprit. The victim was a most unpleasant man that had made many enemies. The mystery did seem to just stop once the confession was made.

Now that I have read this book I need to go back and see what all I missed in previous books. This is a great series with wonderful characters that keeps you coming back for more.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the opportunity to read this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I jumped headfirst into G. A. McKevett's series featuring PI Savannah Reid at book 24 (A Bitter Brew) so I'm very much a latecomer!

This was a wonderful story. I can't believe that A Few Drops of Bitters is only the second of this series that I've read and it won't be my last! (For some reason book 25 (And the Killer Is...) escaped my notice - I don't know how or why).

Savannah is witness to a murder at a birthday party and from the start, this was an amusing, brilliant story that worked well for me as a stand-alone read. The plot was tight and full of little surprises. The author's characterisation was excellent and I wished that some of the cast were actually in my life. The subject matter was very well presented and I will be reading all of this series, although it might take some time! Very highly recommended and a well deserved five stars.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Savannah is loving her new role as foster mom and all that comes with it. The arrangements for her sisters wedding are falling into place and life couldn't be better. She even has a new friend in local vet Dr. Carolyn Erling where her foster son is volunteering after school. Surprised with an invite to a birthday party for the doctors husband Savannah is astounded at the doctors lavish home. When Dr. Erling's husband falls dead during his birthday toast Savannah doesn't think it was by natural causes. Intent on helping her new friend clear her name Savannah begins to investigate. She soon learns that he was poisoned and begins looking at who had it in for the man. When the suspect looks never ending Savannah knows that she will need to dig deeper. Follow along as the detective agency dives into the investigation to find a killer.

I love Moonlight Magnolia Agency. Savannah Reid and her extensive family have provided years of enjoyment.

Savannah & Dirk are foster parents of 6 yr old Brody Greyson. Providing a loving home to an abused child is a lot of extra responsibilities rewarded with overwhelming love and experiences. Brody's best friend is veterinarian Dr. Carolyn Erling. When Carolyn's abusive husband, Dr, Steven Erling, drops dead at his 50th birthday party, Dirk is assigned the investigation. The plot has a lot of people to eliminate.

Savannah's youngest sister, Alma, is marrying romance-movie star Ethan Malloy. Being matron of honor is a special time of bonding between these sisters.

Thank you G.A. McKevett (aka Sonja Massie) for a heart warming afternoon with these characters.

I just love this series, and it keeps getting better and better. The mystery is always good, but the characters are even better. This is the type of book that, after you have finished reading it, you wonder what the characters are doing now. The characters are so complex and wonderful, that you just keep wanting to find out more about them. They move the story along as much as the mystery, which is a good thing in a wonderful series.

Set in San Carmelita, California Savannah Reid and her foster son Brody have been invited to a birthday party at Dr. Carolyn’s house. Dr. Carolyn’s husband Stephen is the birthday boy. At the party, Dr. Stephen drops dead. Apparently someone poisoned his drink. Savannah has to help Dr. Carolyn find the killer. Overall an interesting read. Would recommend

I love this series and it keeps getting better and better. This is book 26 in the Savannah Reid series and can be read as a stand alone but there is some much more info from reading previous books. Savannah and Dirk are taking Brody, their foster son to a gala party given by his favorite veterinarian Carolyn. When Carolyn's husband drops dead at the party the list of suspects is enormous. With Dirk in charge of the police investigation and Savannah using her P.I. agency they are narrowing the list. Brody is sure it can't be Carolyn. Granny is back and the wedding of sister Alma is also front and center. A great read that keeps you turning the pages instead of cooking dinner. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I can’t get enough of this book series! After knowing the characters from the very beginning and to where they are in this book it was very satisfying the direction of the story and all the supporting characters!

The mystery is engaging and very good. The writing is easy to get immersed in. A good mystery read!

This series has changed a lot along the way. In the beginning it was more hard-edged, there was more gore and violence, but as Savannah's gotten older and her life has changed the stories have gotten more gentle and the focus has gradually shifted from the crimes to her home life. In this book we see her become, in every sense of the word, a mom. A role she has been filling since she was a child that she now accepts officially.

The mystery is interesting, there are several different threads coming together and no end of suspects since the victim is one of the most repulsive people you can imagine. One thing that disappointed me a little is that when the confession takes place, the mystery drops off entirely. There's no follow up, there's an involved party who doesn't get officially questioned, and there are a few threads that are left dangling (one being that there was another person involved who's identity is never revealed). We also see Savannah behaving somewhat strangely throughout and we see a whispered conversation between Alma and Ethan that seems to have some significance, but we don't find out what's happening there. I have my suspicions that those things could be brought up again in the next book, I hope so!

While I do love seeing Savannah embracing her life as a wife and mother, not to mention super aunt, best friend, and savvy detective, I would like to see a bit less dwelling on the sad parts of the characters lives. Though the things they experienced of course play a pivotal role in who they've become, there were times I felt the mystery was taking a back seat. Cozy mysteries aren't supposed to make you cry!

That being said, I did tear up at the end of this book and I think the ending couldn't have been more perfect. Not only is sweet Alma getting to be a fairy tale princess, but the rest of their awful siblings are blessedly absent from this entire book!

This series is one of my favorites, one that I can read back to back to back and never get bored with it. To get a full appreciation for the series and the characters I think it's important to read them in order but I think they can be enjoyed in any order.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC!

Princess Fuzzypants here: I am a big fan of both of the concurrent series that the author writes with the same characters at different times and places. Savannah, the heroine of one series is the granddaughter of Granny Reid, the heroine of the other, who raised Savannah and her six siblings after they were taken from their n’er do well parents. The adventures back in Georgia growing up and now in LA where Savannah solves murders with her husband Dirk and various members of her family never fail to entertain. They have to be some of the biggest hearted, most down to earth characters ever conceived.

Now that Savannah and Dirk have brought a young boy with a worse mother than Savannah’s into the family, I love how they all rally around him to cherish him. These are just people a reader would love to get to know. It is no wonder a film star is marrying Savannah’s sister. This is a family one would want to join. But before they can say “i do”, there is a killer to be found. A thoroughly despicable surgeon is poisoned at his 50th birthday party. No one liked the man with good reason. Who disliked him enough to kill him? Savannah and young Brody are hoping it is not his wife, the vet with whom Brody has formed a deep friendship.

Dirk and Savannah make a powerful team but it is her sister-in-law Tammy and her awesome computer skills put the pieces together. They reveal who killed the victim and it is a spider’s web indeed. The mystery will keep you guessing, the characters will keep you caring and the story will keep you invested. Considering how many books there have been written in the two series, that is quite an accomplishment. Five purrs and two paws up.

There aren't many mysteries of any kind that can reach the 26th entry and still earn a five star rating but this sure is one of them. Savannah, Granny, Dirk, Brody and the rest of the recurring characters are on stage and it's a great puzzle. Savannah is busier than ever what with being Mom to 6 year old Brody, their foster son, trying to to make her little sister's wedding a beautiful event and working at the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency. Soon she and her husband, Dirk, have a case that lands at their feet, so to speak. Brody 'works' for Dr. Carolyn, a local vet and a person Savannah has come to see as a friend. On the occasion of Dr. Carolyn's husbands birthday, Savannah and Dirk are guests at the fancy star studded event. Dr. Stephen Erling is a very much in demand surgeon to the rich and famous but it turns out that one of those at the party hates him enough to make this his last birthday. Dr. Stephen is poisoned and the list of suspects seems to include the entire guest list. Nobody liked hm. Dr. Carolyn turns to Savannah to find the killer. It's a tall order and figuring out who to trust is a challenge.
I have read every book in this series and each one is an enjoyable read. This works as a stand alone but if you are new to the world of Savannah and Granny and the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency, set aside some reading time to catch up.
My thanks to the publisher, Kensington and to NetGalley for giving me an asvance copy in exchange for my honest review.

A Few Drops of Bitters by G.A. McKevett (Savannah Reid #26) 4.5 stars

Savannah Reid is enjoying her life, being a first time mom to her foster son Brody and arranging the wedding of her sister Alma to Hollywood superstar, Ethan Malloy. (from "Hide and Sneak" Savannah Reid #23) Brody loves all animals and is helping at the vet's office for fun. The vet, Dr. Caroline Erling, invites Brody to her home to attend a birthday party honoring her husband, Dr. Stephen Erling. Unfortunately, during the party, Dr. Stephen Erling keels over and dies. He was a jerk, a womanizer, and abusive. This makes the wife, Dr. Caroline the prime suspect. Can Savannah find the real killer among a large group of suspects or will Dr. Caroline be charged for murder in the first degree.

This was a wonderful read due to the interactions between Savannah, Dirk, the Reid Family and close friends. The mystery itself was more mundane and I didn't have all the suspects on my radar until the very end. I though the insight into their roles as parents gave Savannah and Dirk an added richness and depth to their characters. The conversation between Savannah and Ethan had me in tears and gave the whole book a triumphant flourish. I look forward to the next book in this series

Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Books for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. A Few Drops of Bitter is the latest book in the Savannah Reid series. This time, Savannah investigates the death of a very unpleasant surgeon. This character has a very brief appearance in the book (fortunately), and Dirk ends up having to officially investigate his death. There are a few suspects to choose from, and the mystery is resolved quickly enough, in terms of the time elapsed in the book. While I was happy and satisfied to have the conclusion, I had imagined a completely different explanation that did not materialize in the book. I think I really had my brain working into overdrive this time, it was not as complicated as I first thought.

An aspect of the book I particularly enjoyed was Savannah and Dirk as foster parents. Ms. McKevett writes with finesse and sensitivity about child neglect and abuse, as well as the impact and wounds it can leave. I always find it sad when some aspects of Savannah and her siblings' past is brought up. While it helps better understand and appreciate the characters, it still gets to me. At the same time, it shows that there is hope for a better life. An excellent book, not to be missed!

I enjoyed A Few Drops of Bitters. I usually do enjoy Savannah Reid books. I appreciate the character, her down-home-ism's, her zest for those she loves and the fact she knows exactly who she is.

I have been noticing though, that with each book, the stories are getting more and more personal and less about the mysteries, especially since her marriage. A Few Drops of Bitters suffers from this. While I enjoy her personal life and those in it, I came to the Savannah Reid books for the mysteries.

Yes, A Few Drops of Bitters has a mystery. However that mystery is given a short very shrift. The questions regarding it are all there but they take a back seat to Savannah's personal life. There is very little actual investigating and the solution is hurried by a near-miraculous happenstance just when needed as the book was coming to a close, by a character that usually has a much bigger part to play with the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency.

Sadly, some of the beloved characters are relegated more to window dressing as dear friends in a A Few Drops of Bitters, each with new, compelling personal lives, rather than mystery solvers we know them to be.

4 quite generous stars

Alma is getting married and Savannah is the Maid of Honor. As she struggles to family and wedding responsibilities, she attends a birthday party for the husband of her friend and local veterinarian. When the husband drops dead at his birthday party, Dirk and Savannah take the good doctor home with them as the home is now a crime scene.

As one marriage ends and another is set to begin, Savannah is hired to find the killer and clear her friend’s name. The clock is ticking and it’s time to git’er done and focus on Alma’s happily ever after.

This is a great series. It is a follow on to the story of Savannah’s childhood with her Granny and siblings and lets us see the adult woman she has become. I think the thing I love the most is the addition of Brody to their family. Seeing Dirk and Savannah becoming parents is a whole new facet to their relationship and it brings out the best in them. Don’t miss these two series, you’ll have tissues out at times and be laughing at others. It’s down home fun!

Savannah and the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency are back in A Few Drops of Bitters by G. A. McKevett. Savannah and Dirk are fostering Brody, who has settled in as a member of the family. An animal lover, Brody helps out at Dr. Caroline Erlings veterinary office in the afternoons. After wrangling an invitation to Dr. Caroline's husband's birthday party, Brody convinces Savannah and Dirk to attend with him. Dr. Caroline's husband turns out to be a jerk, who dies during the party and is clearly not going to be missed.

After a bit of a slump in the crime department Savannah and Dirk investigate the death, which turns out to be a murder. A meeting with Brody's teacher reveals fears he has of being returned to his mother. Between investigating and parenting, Savannah feels like she has neglected preparations for Alma and Ethan's upcoming wedding.

Turns out that no one, no one, liked Dr. Steven Erling. He might have been a brilliant surgeon but he was a lousy human so when he is poisoned, there's a list of people who might have done it. Problem is, Savannah wants to make sure his wife, her friend Carolyn wasn't the one, and more importantly that her foster son Brody didn't do it either. Brody adored Carolyn, a vet, and Savannah is finding herself turning into a fierce protector of him. Her husband Dirk has the case but that doesn't stop Savannah, Granny, and the rest from investigating. You would too under the circumstances. I know this is the latest in a long running series so it might seem intimidating to read it as a standalone but know that you'll be just fine. McKevett has a way of pulling you in and making you feel a part of the Reid family right away. As always in a cozy, there are multiple suspects. Thanks to Netgalley for the Arc. A fun read.

PI Savannah Reid is busy being a mom to her new foster son Brody and arranging a lavish wedding for her sister Alma. Brody's love of animals has brought caring vet Dr. Carolyn Erling into their lives.
So when Savannah, Brody and her husband Dirk attends a birthday bash for Dr. Carolyn's husband, she does not expect going to a gorgeous hilltop mansion where Dr. Stephen Erling ends up dropping dead. With a poisonous residue found inside Dr. Stephen's glass, the search is on for the killer who spiked his drink. The talented brain surgeon had an A-list roster of star patients but he also made plenty of enemies. With the help of the members of the Magnolia Moonlight Detective Agency, Savannah and Dirk work to find his killer.

This was another enjoyable entry in the long-running Savannah Reid mystery series.

I received a digital ARC from Netgalley and Kensington Books with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and provided this review.

Loved this book! I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, at times laughing, and, at times, bringing a tear to my eye. This begins with a murder that Savannah witnessed. The victim was an unliked and the list of possible murderers is long and almost everyone he's ever met. The Moonlight Magnolia agency gals jump into help solve the mystery, as Savannah works alongside her detective husband.

While this is an entertaining mystery, the real story is the relationships between the characters, from the abused foster child taken in by Savannah and Dirk, to their former FBI friends and their future brother in law, one of Hollywood's leading men. I loved how the author wove the relationships together and crafted a story that I couldn't put down. Put this one at the top of your TBR list. The author is on my must read authors' list.

Because I have read every book in this series and am fond of the characters, I enjoyed this book. I did, however, know how the murder was committed as soon as one event was mentioned and who the murder was, but not 100% of the reason until the end. I also found bits here and there implausable and not well explained, such as, Brody volunteering at a vet's office at the age of 6 and no one on the groom's side at the wedding at all, has he no friends??? (can't give other examples due to spoilers). While I know some children can be precocious, I also found Brody to be a bit too advanced. Still, he remained likeable.

So, I think longtime fans will enjoy, but those new to the series may be a bit disappointed on the mystery front.

I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

This has to be my favorite book in the series. I couldn't put it down. There was so much going on, so many moments to make me laugh and cry, so many moments that I just wanted to give all the characters a hug.
Savannah and her husband Dirk are excited to be foster parents, and when their precocious son somehow gets them invited to a birthday party, Savannah doesn't expect to witness a murder.
Savannah doesn't have time to be involved in the investigation, since she's busy being a mom, as well as helping her baby sister plan her wedding.
It doesn't take Savannah long to become embroiled in the investigation, and the suspect list is a long one.

This story touched on so many emotions and I really hope that Savannah and Dirk get to keep their spunky boy.

Most series that go on for 26 books tend to get too formulaic and you lose a lot of what attracted you to the series in the first place. But this is one series that continues to grow and get better. I love that the cast of characters seems to grow with each book as new people come along and get adopted into the fold. The mysteries also have seemed to get more personal. This one starts as Savannah and Dirk attend a party for their foster sons favorite veterinarian. When someone drops dead, it is up to Savannah and her Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency to solve the crime. Plus, Savannah and Co are getting ready to adopt another new member into the fold with her sister Alma's wedding approaching. This was a fun book and worth the read!

Thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book.

He kind of invited himself with Savannah and Dirk over to Dr.Carolyn Erling ( the veterinarian) husband 50th bday party. “ Wrong place wrong time doesn’t do Savannah Reid’s life justice.

Meanwhile her sister Alma Joy is prepping for a wedding with Savannah as the maid of honor.
