Roque “Ro” Celdran moves to San Francisco to study Landscape Design and his dreams of a better life seem about to come true, except that he's strapped for cash. His identical twin suggests a unique way to make ends meet: a job as a sub-for-hire. But a case of mistaken identity lands Ro at the dentist with a mouthful of broken teeth.

On the surface, Lance Roberts, DDS, seems to have it all—brains, body, classic good looks, and determination. Underneath the flawless exterior lies a frustrated Dom in search of a sub who can handle his obsessive behavior and debilitating need for control. The sexy young man in his chair pushes all of Lance's buttons but he's a patient and off limits for the moment.

When Ro offers plant maintenance to repay Lance for his dental services, Lance welcomes the chance to get to know Ro better. Close proximity brings their physical attraction to a boil, but Ro is convinced he's not good enough for the learned doctor, and Lance is certain his need for domination will drive his proud and somewhat prickly love interest away. Can two head strong alphas find a way to satisfy both of their desires or will their relationship wind up fractured?

This story was a leap outside of the box for Ms. Ashling and I applaud that. The lady can write characters better than most authors and she wrote three in Lance, Ro and Tony. Identical twins, Tony often makes believe that he is Ro and this time his game lands Ro in the free dental clinic. Lance, a hot, young dentist takes on Ro's case and soon Ro himself. This story is filled with lies, deceptions, miscommunication and an overabundance of pride. The angst ran high which was new for Ms Ashling. I enjoyed the dental practice being all into the BSM scene and the way that they protected each other. The story flowed well with some interesting turns to keep things moving. It took me two readings to catch everything offered in this book. I cannot put my finger on it but the story lacked that spark between the characters that defines an Ashling book and puts it above the norm that her other books had. I believe that this author is talented enough to be putting out 5 star books and garner a large following. She just needs to stay consistent with that spark.

Part of a series but is really a standalone as the main characters are new. Lance is the new dentist at Scott and Robin's practice and Ro is a patient he takes on after Ro is beaten and both men are just each other's types. The biggest stumbling block seems to be that Lance has been looking for a submissive and Ro is not interested in the lifestyle and has a dominant personality.

Ro has some secrets, but not as big as the secrets his twin brother Tony is keeping. Ro works hard with their landscaping company while also going to college. Tony is nothing but trouble and Ro is reaching his limits. I thought it got a bit over the top with what Tony does towards the end of the story, but that was just a minor quibble.

I thought Ro and Lance were a good pairing and it was interesting to see Lance reevaluating just what he thinks he needs from a relationship.

Another winner from author Mickie B. Ashling! I loved this gripping tale of a twice-bitten, OCD-plagued dentist and a twice-shy Mexican college student who is burdened by the weight of his irresponsible twin. Sublime, amorous, and genuine, this contemporary story moves along at a fast, albeit realistic, pace. The two men’s dance of courtship is like a good tango, entrancing with steam escalating from heady lust to the fire of love betwixt misunderstandings. I applaud the author for weaving a “walk a mile in another man’s shoes” thread throughout the tale. Its inclusion shed an altruistic and informative light on OCD affliction and the follies of prejudice but added grit to this courageous and inspiring romance.

Smart, handsome, and gifted, Lance Roberts maintains a professional image at his new dental practice facility. Unwilling to burden his fellow workers with his OCD woes, he practices the regime his therapist has set for him and things are looking good. Good enough that he wonders if he can chance having a sexual partner, someone willing to accept him as he is: OCD, sexual proclivities and all. Asked to perform pro-bono work on a badly beaten patient, Lance goes above and beyond magnanimous in his treatment of the handsome young Mexican. Initially Lance blames his OCD for his attention to Ro, but his attraction to the Mexican, who he’s certain is not a submissive, finds Lance questioning his identity as a Dom. Soon he begins making up excuses just for a opportunity be near the gorgeous man.

Proud, American-born-Mexican landscaper Ro works overtime to maintain his groundskeeping company and attend college, hoping to attain his dream and become a true landscape artist. He rarely shares his ambitious plans; experience has taught him that snide Mexican gardener remarks are the result of that folly. Being gay and having pretty-boy looks only gives haters more ammunition to ridicule him so Ro stays focused on his dream. His only exception: cleaning up after the messes his identical twin gets into. Trapped by his brother’s latest scheme, Ro ends up brutally beaten and reluctantly accepts an offer for free dentistry. The handsome blond dentist who greets him for his appointment sets a slow ache of lust within Ro, but the landscaper can just imagine what Lance thinks of him…and it isn’t pretty. When the dentist shows Ro only courtesy and kindness Ro is perplexed…could it be that Lance really sees him? Is it possible that Lance might be interested in him?

This is a great read! At 221 pages, the romance is well-paced and I read it in two sittings. I loved both Ro and Lance, they were perfectly imperfect which added to their appeal. Intelligent and to-die-for-hot—some of the passages that featured Ro removing or climbing back into his well-worn jeans, had my mouth-a-watering…but I digress—each man had a fierce “I can do this myself” pride and wrestled with demons, both real and imagined, that slowly became manageable as the two learned to trust one another. Teasing glimpses of the deeper backstories of both men held just the right amount of intrigue to increase my respect for their struggle and admire their subsequent transformation.

Tony, the ne’er do well brother of Ro, held his own as the “devil’s own luck” villain. I felt it possible that his manic reasoning might have been brought about by the very real TTTS (twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome) in which one twin receives more nourishment in the womb than another. I like an author who does research and Mickie B. Ashling’s books always go the extra mile in that department, providing nutrition for my intellectual self as well as that of my libido.

As to libido…there is plenty here to titillate, stimulate and yes, even gain the infamous yaoi nose-bleed. Lusty, romance with intelligent content…what do I call that again? Oh yeah…a winner! Thank you, Mickie B. Ashling, for another stunning homage to diversity…loved it!

I love this book. Mickie B. Ashling had my attention from the beginning of this story. It was amazing to watch the chemistry unfold between two kindred souls who were bought together through an unfortunate circumstances. Readers couldn’t help but fall in love with Lance and Ro’s story. Even though they were both form different backgrounds and social status it was amazing to see how similar their personality was. Both Lance and Ro understood each others quirks and respected each others personality. Even though both brought their own baggage to the relationship they realize they both needed each other to stay grounded. Ms Ashling’s writing was very detailed it was easy to follow the story through all the many twist, suspense that unfolded through out the story. This story was well researched, very develop and a definite must read. Readers will not be disappointed with this book.

In many ways the lies we tell ourselves often come back to haunt us, particularly when we keep them from the person we love. Ro Celdran carries on his back the worst of all feelings—fear that he will never be worthy to live or love in a white man’s world. Past experiences have proven to him that no matter what he does to better himself, he will always be a lowly Latino not worthy to be involved with anyone beyond his poor social strata. Not only that, but he is saddled with a twin brother whose narcissistic tendencies and lack of moral compass tend to land he and Ro in more trouble than good. When Ro is nearly beaten to death by someone confusing him with his identical twin, he lands in the lap of Lance Roberts. While patching up Ro’s mouth, little does Lance understand that he is also bringing a man into his own life that will allow him to live more easily, with less panic and compulsion. What these two men do not know is that they both harbor secrets that could potentially kill the budding romance between them.

There were so many good things about Fractured by Mickie B. Ashling. The two main characters both had so much to lose when trusting the other. Yet the author allowed them to act like real men, with no long, drawn out scenes where they skirted the difficult subjects and secrets in their lives. Rather, there were carefully drawn scenes where the two lovers confronted each other and demanded truth be given rather than more lies or conveniently forgotten half-truths. I felt these moments between Ro and Lance were among some of the most realistic and tender of scenes, leaving no doubt that Mickie B. Ashling knows how to draw multi-layered, believable characters who are both flawed and needy.

On top of these two beautifully scripted men was a story that was both compelling and, for the most part, plausible. I could understand how the twins would be interchangeable and how Ro would suffer Tony’s continual screw-ups because of their deep brotherly love for each other. It was not till nearly the end, when Tony seemed to switch up and become this loose cannon, that I felt he acted out of character and that the plot fell apart a bit. In fact, this episode marked what I felt became a too rapid tie up of all the various story threads that up until that point had been really well plotted. The end felt so rushed and Ro was much too forgiving toward a brother who nearly ruined his life. On top of that, I felt that we did not see enough of Tony on the page to warrant us believing his dramatic change in demeanor near the end of the novel. All in all, this was, to me, a fairly serious flaw that kept this novel from receiving a higher rating.

Fractured started out strong and moved swiftly, carrying the reader along in its wake. It was a well-drawn story that was simply weakened by a rushed ending. Fans of this author will enjoy this one despite its race to the finish.

I received my copy from the publisher through Love Romances and More and rated it 3.5 stars.

I do like a book that starts right in the middle of the action, and ‘Fractured’ certainly does that. The very first thing the reader encounters is poor Roque – Ro - Celdran being beating into a pulp not knowing what has provoked the attack and unable to adequately defend himself.

The beating leaves Ro with severe damage to his mouth and teeth which brings him to Lance Roberts’ surgery and the free dental care he so desperately needs. From the moment the two man meet there is an attraction between them. While both of them try to deny it to themselves for a while, it isn’t long before they are spending more time together and not much longer before they act on the irresistible pull.

Both Lance and Ro have issues they’d prefer not to share. Lance tries to hide his ODC from the man he’s attracted to, afraid his compulsive need for order will scare the other man off. Conscious that Ro is as much of an alpha as he is, Lance also decides against sharing his need to dominate with Ro. Ro has things he’s ashamed of as well and fails to mention that he has been supplementing his income by working as a submissive in a BDSM club. He doesn’t believe in BDSM or that it could ever be a viable life-style or relationship choice and has no interest in ever exploring it further. Ro also fails to mention his troubled twin brother Tony and the huge chip his has on his shoulder about being Latino.

The slow emergence of their secrets initially only brings the two man closer together. But when everything Tony has done comes back to haunt Ro, the time for secrets is over. And even full disclosure might not be enough to safe the relationship between these two man who thought they’d at last found what they’d been looking for all along. Even without the secrets they are still two dominant males wanting to control their counterpart. A delicate and surprising balance will have to be found.

There were quite a few things in this book I really liked. It was refreshing to read a book in which the two main characters were equally flawed and needed each other to the same extend. The issues between these two men and the secrets they wanted or needed to keep made perfect sense and added interest to the story. I also really approved of the fact that the conflict in this book was not drawn out. I do prefer a story in which a problem is dealt with rather than allowed to linger on for chapters on end. And most of all, I loved how these two dominant man managed to find a way to make their relationship work. I adored the give and take between them, with both Lance and Ro willing to give themselves to their partner in ways they’d never considered before.

I did have one issue with this book though. 52% into the story there’s a huge ‘for-telling’ of what’s to come. I had no objection to knowing that trouble lay ahead – I had known that since the start of the book. Nor did it bother me that I those few lines revealed who would be the cause of the problems – that had been clear from the start as well. I didn’t like that the exact from the problem would take was spelled out in detail nor the way in which it was described in those few line. In fact this frustrated me so much that I had to put the book down and walk away from it and found myself reluctant to pick it up again. And that was a shame because up until that point I had loved the story and was really invested in the characters and their journey.

This was an interesting story that would have been better if it the author had been a little bit more stingy with the information she shared with the reader, or had timed that sharing differently. Overall though, I loved spending time with Ro and Lance and enjoyed their torturous road to happiness.

From start to finish Ms. Ashling has crafted a compelling read bringing together two men from vastly different backgrounds, each with his own pile of emotional baggage, to make for a rocky road to HEA. As characters from past books make appearances, and play a role in the HEA, I found myself enjoying seeing what's become of them and the sense of family this brings to the story as brotherly love is a main theme in this story. Throw in numerous steamy encounters with BDSM-lite intensity and readers are rewarded with a well-rounded story with an intensely emotional romance full of thought-provoking social issues.

Roque has had a tight bond with his twin brother Tony since the day of their birth working side by side through the years putting up with (and protecting) him in his increasingly harmful twin-reversals. Tony's getting more and more out of control ever since becoming involved in BDSM and his latest act to gain his own Dominatrix resulted in major facial damage for Ro. It's just one more act that has Ro hating his ethnicity as he's always felt like a lower class citizen. His first love sold him out for being Mexican and the numerous stereotypes hurled at him have him trying to rise above that by working non-stop and going to college. Those feelings still rear their ugly head during inopportune moments and force him and his new love Lance to deal with them head on.

Lance has always appeared to have it easy with his smarts and family wealth, but it's led to more pressures that culminate in occasionally crippling OCD and having to hide his sexuality from those in his social circle. Instead he had relationships mostly with those that worked for his family as he could be in control and free of judgements which fueled his need to be a Dom. Those relationships fizzled quickly as they left him unchallenged and the inequality led to boredom. Ro excites him though and is full of contradictions that have Lance giving up some of the power which puts them on more equal footing allowing for a satisfying HEA.

Issues of ethnicity are dealt with realistically and sensitively making for some thought-provoking moments. Lance's OCD is handled in a believable and accepting way that made it apparent that these two are made for each other as Ro was caring and supportive during his panic attacks. Their relationship was full of give and take with many moments where they leaned on each other with no judgements between them. The romance between them was at times sweet, always sexy, but always in jeopardy because of Tony's machinations. He was my least favorite part of the book and I could never be as forgiving as Ro was over all his misdeeds. Barring that I found this an entertaining stand-alone read that nicely balanced all aspects of this imperfect pair's lives and recommend it to those wanting a well-written and seductive m/m read with a bit of telenovela added in to ramp up the suspense.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

4.25 Stars
This author is a favourite of mine. If you haven’t read the Impacted or Horizons Series I would highly recommend them. She gives us great characters everytime!
Tony and Ro are identical twins. Their looks are where their similarities end though.
Ro is hardworking, diligent and constantly trying to better himself. He will be the first in his family to get a degree and puts all his time and energy into trying to make his landscape gardening business a success.
Tony lives his life on the fly. His work ethic isn’t strong and he has become enamoured with a trainee Domme at his local BDSM club which takes up most of his time. When the club is looking for gay men to help with training he immediately thinks of his brother and offers him a way of making some much needed extra cash.
Ro has no interest in BDSM and is definitely not submissive but needs the money and as he will be ‘subbing’ for women who do nothing for him sexually he gives it a go. When Ro gets caught up in his day job and can’t make an evening session Tony grabs the chance to make his dream a reality but the consequences are disastrous.
Lance has been working at the dental practice for almost 6 months. Charming, good looking and extremely smart on the surface he seems to have everything he wants. What Lance really wants and needs is a man to dominate but with his OCD and other quirks finding him has proven difficult. He has almost given up on the idea when Ro lands in his dental chair.
Lance will go the extra mile to give Ro back his beautiful smile. Ro thinks Lance hung the stars but is pretty sure he isn’t gay and that if he was what would he see in such a lowly person as himself. Both these men through their upbringing and previous events in their lives have major hang ups. Although they quickly get together and the sex is the best they have ever had they also connect mentally but there are so many secrets that their new friendship seems destined to fail.
The big question is how two dominant men can be in a D/s relationship and when is the right time for Lance to approach his need for this. Ro feels panicked into coming clean about his foray into the BDSM scene but is terrified of how Lance will react and fears he will see him as a prostitute. The secrets just keep building.
When Tony finally goes off the rails things quickly fall apart and Ro is left flailing and unsure of everything. Both these dominant men need to find a middle point, and quickly, if their relationship is to survive. For this to happen they will have to be truthful about everything for the first time since they met!

4 Heart Review by Kat

I have thought about this review for over 24 hours to make sure I got my correct thoughts converged. I have loved this series so much but I wasn’t sure what I thought about this book at first. I wasn’t sure that it was a part of the series or a spin off. The first two books centered on Dental Hygienist, Robin “Red” Kennedy and his submissive and Business Partner, Dentist Scott Gregory. The first two books were only four months apart and left me with a series of questions and wanting to know the next chapter in their complex lives.

This third book in the series takes a huge jump five years later. Scott and Robin are embarking on an eight-week European vacation and have hired a new Periodontist out of New York, Lance Roberts. Since the men are leaving in the next couple day, Scott asks Lance if he can take a case for him. In a way to give back to the community, the practice takes a couple cases pro bono from Donated Dental Services each year. Roque “Ro” Celdran is the patient in question. He had been convinced by his twin brother to be a “sub-for-hire” for a local BDSM club and a series of events that went very wrong left the handsome Latino gentleman with massive damage to his gorgeous smile. Fractured takes you only the journey of these two men and their obvious attraction to each other.

While I grew to love Lance and Ro, I had a bit of difficulty getting into their story. I was disappointed to have had such a huge jump in time and several of my favorite characters were jumped over completely. Basically all I had left was Susie, their business partner and Lance’s dental assistant who was also the office manager. We saw a brief snippet of Scott and Robin and very little of Susie’s story line. I loved the story, don’t get me wrong. I was just disappointed to not know the rest of the story on Denise and David or what happened to Jenna. I am hoping for more insight in the next book. I am giving Fractured 4 hearts.

An odd but enjoyable romance about an OCD plagued dentist and a patient he treats through a program for people unable to pay for dental care. Lance, the dentist, meets Roque (Ro) a landscaper, and there is a connection but they don't act on it right away. The action at the beginning of the book is a bit murky to me with Ro getting terribly hurt after being beaten by a Dom at a BDSM club. His injuries require extensive dental work. After a time, Lance and Ro get to know each other and, in my opinion, moving a bit fast and I wondered about the ethics of getting involved with a patient, but they succumb to the combustible chemistry between the two of them. So they move forward in a relationship while dealing with their respective baggage - Lance's OCD renders him so upset at times that he faints. And Ro is struggling to overcome his humble roots by going to college and working as a landscaper and dealing with his ne'er do well brother. Lots happens. There are other characters at the beginning of the book, Scott and Robin, who gave me the feeling that this book was part of a series and I just couldn't find book one, but perhaps they appear in another Mickie Ashling book. I had some difficulty connecting with Lance and Ro but I did enjoy the complexity of their relationship. Lance is a Dom who has had several failed relationships and wants Ro to join him in some of his kink but Ro, with his feelings of inadequacy, history of being discriminated against (Ro is Mexican) and other stuff make it difficult for him to indulge. This was a good book with some lovely dialogue at times, burn up the room smexy scenes and character driven plot line. I did feel bogged down by all the other stuff going on with Tony, the BDSM club and Tina, the girl Tony wants. I really enjoyed the end and the direction the author took. It was not an easy HEA and I appreciated that. All in all, a very good book.

Typically it’s a good thing when family members try to help out in times of need. Then again, sometimes it’s better to be careful what you ask for – especially from a twin sibling who hasn’t quite grown out of playing the sometimes popular switcheroo act unique to twins.

When a case of mistaken identity lands Roque in Lance’s dental chair, his pain and suffering may almost be worth it if a relationship pans out between the pair. However, true to the author’s style, these characters really have to work hard to be happy. They have to deal with lots of past baggage that shaped them into imperfect people with hangups (about social status, economic status, ethnicity, etc.). If they were great communicators, it could have eased the way in working through those hurdles, but no such luck there either. They didn’t necessarily lie to each other or cover things up, but they were great at truth by omission and lack of details. And let’s not forget about stubborn male pride and how much that can really “help” any situation (or not).

Compelling characters and vivid descriptions really bring this story to life. If you have any squeamishness with respect to dental procedures, this one may make you squirm. And if the dental procedures don’t do it, the steamy interaction between Roque and Lance should do the trick. They are two strong males used to being in control, so it was very interesting to watch the progression of their dynamic over time.

I loved the chance to catch a brief glimpse of Scott and Robin from “Impacted” and “Bonds of Love”. Despite the tie to those earlier books, this one works fine as a standalone, but I wouldn’t mind reading more about them down the road!

Review written for MM Good Book Reviews

Well this was a very interesting book in so many ways. First of all, we have a dentist for a main character and I have to praise the research behind this part of the story. Everything regarding anything dental was described wonderfully, and the way, venues, materials a dentist uses were so real it made me cringe. Fact is I have a sort of phobia toward this profession and damn it if I didn’t feel at times as if I was there, in that clinic facing that Doc. *shudders* But it gave this entire read a very realistic side, made me feel as if I’m right in there, in the heart of this story, inside this very setting. It was a great feeling to be able to immerse myself in such a way in this story.

The other equally interesting things here are the twins. Being a person who has been and still am surrounded by twins, identical and not, my entire life I can’t help but notice how close to the psyche and behavior of twins the author got. At times I felt as if I was reading about my ex-partner and his brother, it was so close to them. Yes, there are twins who get along extremely well even as they are nothing like the other in personality, and then there are those twins who not only are miles in character away from each other, but there is this user/abuser thing going in on between them.

I admit, this author is becoming an addiction for me. Her ability to being flawed and "real" characters to life, leaves me in awe. And she keeps me completely spellbound in her books and I simply cannot put them down. I am completely useless until I have finished them, once I start.

Again in this book all the characters have their part to play. As isn't uncommon in Mickie's books there is a lot going on, a lot of characters introduced in the first few chapters. But once that is done, the story just unfolds, grabs me and won't let go. The MC's are real. I feel their pain, want to smack them, shake them and tell them what they should (or shouldn't) do. They are flawed, not simply perfect men, going on with their lifes, living with real issues and problems. And it all feels exactly right.

I loved the way that Lance's OCD was described and handled. And the fact that, unlike in so many books with kink in them, this one again changed things up. It wasn't the standard, me Dom, you sub... A very refreshing change. And, personally, considering this isn't a BDSM orientated book, the amount of kink was perfect.

If you haven't tried this author yet, I can't recommend her enough!

4.5 stars rounded up

Lance is a rich, white dental surgeon and Ro is poor Mexican (though US born) mature student/lanscaper who becomes his patient after being beaten up by a Dom in a select BDSM club (though not in a scene). Though attracted to each other they do nothing about it at first. Both have baggage and Lance suffers from OCD which gives him panic attacks. There is also the issue that Lance is Top looking for a sub, or so he thinks. Ro however is not into the lifestyle at all, though his twin brother Tony is and thinks that Ro may be a sub.

This is not a BDSM book as such - though the side characters are in D/s relationships (the first two books in these series were some of the first M/M D/s books I ever read and are still favourites for re-reads). It's very much an opposites attract story as both MC's come to terms with their feelings for each other, their past histories and misconceptions they hold. I like this author's writing and really enjoyed this one.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. I love Mickie's books.
If you want to know the story in this book please check out the description at the top of the page - I'm not going to repeat it.
Mickie puts a lot of research into her books and to me it shows as I always learn something new when reading her stories. I also like the way she writes as her style is easy to follow and she does not speak down to her readers.
Mickie does not believe in a quick and happy ending for her characters - she seems to think that they have to earn the right to be happy. I actually like this. There is a lot of angst in the book but rest assured it will turn out the way that it should.
I've read the book once and I will be rereading it. Perhaps then I will edit this review.
Until then all I can say is that I definitely recommend it.

Fractured is a stand alone novel with cameo appearances by the guys from her Impacted series. Very light BDSM, well written, fascinating characters, sex used to advance the plot. This is a romance novel but it had twists and turns that rival any suspense book I’ve ever read and I was completely surprised more than once. Very good book with a HEA.
