Due to certain circumstances, Mitsutani repeats an unstable heat, and each time there is a reason to look for an opponent for one night ? (Omega). One night, Eiji Tohsaka, who is an alpha, saved the place that was entangled in the back alley at night during estrus. Mitsutani feels a strong urge to the Eiji who creates an unprecedented intense pheromone. Even though he hides his turmoil and seduces Eiji, the ? in front of him is a peculiar constitution where he cannot feel the pheromone...! ? "You know you're being invited without feeling the pheromone, anyway?" After all, just one night of sex... Tomorrow's stranger. Nobody likes it anymore... I intended to... Dramatic OMEGA Birthlove led by destiny of a younger man who doesn't know love x an older ? who was frightened by love!
I liked the idea behind this story, I just don't think it was executed the best. For starters, the whole dilemma with Eiji and his pheromones wasn't explained well. It was made out to be this crazy reveal, but it was confusing and anticlimactic. Speaking of anticlimactic, the whole plot line with the ex didn't really even go anywhere. I don't think that stories need drama or a huge climax in order to be interesting, but this one sets up 2 different conflicts only to have them both fell flat.
I was taken by this BL from the very first page, first, because of its gorgeous art and visual storytelling, and second because of its interesting characters and plot. Mitsuya is an omega who bonded with an alpha that ended up abandoning him; the resulting surgery Mitsuya endured freed him of the alpha bond, but left him with random, irregular heats and a wanton, unanchored lifestyle of one-night stands and back alley sex. Eiji is a mysterious alpha who happens on Mitsuya one night as he is about to be gang-raped. After saving the slightly older omega, though, Eiji seems strangely impervious to Mitsuya’s condition.
Now, I really can’t call myself an omegaverse fan. Steeped in my older generation, gender binary mindset, the entire genre seemed simply bizarre when I first heard about it. That said, some shifter novels - including ones by Eliot Grayson, who brings strong characterization, intriguing plots, and a sense of melodrama shaped by her supple and light sense of humor - helped ease me into the genre. While some omegaverse BL is eye-rollingly trashy, campy, or both, Goodbye to Destiny is thoroughly entertaining.
There are two volumes of this title available in Japanese, which I’m purchasing. I found a smooth, adept, unofficial translation online, but if you go that route, please by a print edition to support the mangaka.
Superb visual storytelling and strong character design mark Shibue Yofune’s BL as a top-notch manga. Equally strong panel compositions are reinforced by screentones that clearly define volume and effortlessly highlight action and intimate scenes. In fact, I found the tone work to be confident and assured, maybe even masterful. Yofune applies values and textures in a way that feel as if she’s sculpting three dimensional form out of the flat, two-dimensional page itself.
Throughout, she puts her considerable visual skills in the service of heightened emotion. The narrative pacing and visual rhythms work together to move readers from one page to another, and I found myself carried along as much from the feelings stirred by her enticing illustrations as much as the emotions triggered by the storyline.
This is a light, relatively low angst (but still dramatic)BL that delivers on all counts.
The art in this manga was beautiful but the story was a bit of a let-down. The premise and basic character design of the main pair were very interesting. The concept of an omega who purposely removed his omega gland because of a youthful mistake and an alpha that can't sense omega hormones is unique and the story had all the signs of a winning formula. Somewhere along the way though, the author just dropped the ball on the plot. The direction of the story became vague. It seemed like it was building up to something then suddenly...nothing. The end of the volume was happy but also really anti-climactic. I'm not sure if another volume can save that ending. I would still recommend reading it but it's definitely not among my favorites.
