My poor baby Houjou T.T

The ferris wheel scene between Matsunaga-san and Meeko was very cute, but I can't help but feel like the storyline suddenly went turbo speed. Progression of this volume felt a little abrupt. Still can't wait for the next volume, which unfortunately has no date yet :(

This volume slowed way down, but it did need to in order to better handle the material. It also made me feel awful for Ryo, which is a sign of good writing but not something I enjoy feeling.

sigh… i loved the last volume or two of this because for a spit second i thought the mangaka had some semblance of a moral compass and wasn’t going to make the age gap end game. but alas i will continue to read on because i like the art and the general atmosphere of the manga… but that age gap tho is just big no not interested. this is what i get thinking that every age gap story will end up like daytime shooting star but i was wrong lol

Uno shoujo in piena regola.

Poor Ryo. I was rooting for you for a few volumes now 😫

Volume 8 starts right where we left off in volume 7. Ryo confesses to Meeko on Christmas Eve, Meeko confesses to Matsunaga on Christmas Day, and Matsunaga returns those feelings to Meeko.

There is a side romance brewing between Asako and Ken-chan and I'm all here for it. I hope there is more development cause it kind of popped out of nowhere. I think the author was so focused on developing the triangle that Asako and Ken-chan were forgotten. I hope Ryo does find someone before the end of the series and/or finds happiness in general.

The art is as gorgeous as ever 😍

This was probably my fave out these!! So many developments between the roommates. Omg Ryo i felt so bad for him. I wanted to hug him the poor child. Sabako is so funny though 😂😂. The amount of excitement I felt when Kentaro was comforting Asako he really likes her! Im like yes yes please. And Matsunaga was so sweet with Miko! Ahhh i cant even. He really stepped up this time. Im so excited to read more.

I suppose at least they are waiting for her to turn 18…. And graduate college…… if I ignore that aspect. It’s such a nice cast. I don’t know why I don’t like Jun really as I have mentioned he reminds me of Gaku in choking on love but here…. (It’s the age difference) Ryo and his cat continue to be my favorite. I want him to find a sweet partner.

LAME. I'm sad the angst was resolved so swiftly.

I feel for Ryo ;__;

RECAP: Miko turns down Ryo and goes to old roommate's home and she calls Jun to pick her up. Vibes are hella awkward in the house. Jun has them all go to the place he did waterfall training to pick the vibes back up. They're all okay again. Jun tells Miko they can't date til she graduates lol.

We pick up where we left off with Ryo’s arms around Meeko. She freaks out and jumps out of his embrace. He then says, “I want you to look at me,” and then proceeds to tell her how he really feels about her. She is taken completely off guard. She tells him she’s sorry, and he should head back, then she just goes off in the cold by herself. Ryo is now left to realize he’s been rejected, and even though I want Meeko to end up with who she wants to be with, I can’t help but feel sorry for Ryo, especially since he is so kind and earnest.

Meanwhile, back at the boarding house, Matsunaga is letting Konatsu down easy, after she leaves things at the party die down. Ryo comes back depressed, explaining just enough, so Matsunaga goes to find her.

Kentaro sincerely compliments Asako, I mean it seems like he genuinely cares about her the way he puts his hand up to her face and looks at her, but it kind of freaks her out. So instead of a sweet moment, she runs off. Maybe for the first time Ryo and Kentaro have something to bond over, and they leave the party, so now there is no one left.

Meeko is sitting on a swing ruminating when Hattori finds her, who then brings her back to her place. Meeko tells her what’s happened and Hattori helps her process it, and find clarity on what she wants to do moving forward, which is to tell Matsunaga how she feels. Right after that, he shows up on Hatori’s doorstep ready to bring Meeko home so she can tell him what’s going on, (but first he must yell at her for wearing her skimpy Santa costume out in the cold with nothing else.)
When they get back, the common areas are empty, and there’s a not that they all went to their rooms. Meeko takes the opportunity to talk to Matsunaga. She is honest about how it felt with Konatsu around, how she felt there wasn’t a place for her, and that she also overheard them on the roof. He tells her she has the wrong idea and that he turned her down. He then reassures her that there is a place for her and that she is a valuable part of the house. He apologizes for not being able to make her feel valued, though, and for making her feel alone. Then he pulls out the cake and asks if they can have some. She seems embarrassed because hers is homemade and the decorating was a little messed up (and because Konatus bought a super high-class one), but he says it looks great and genuinely seems to love it.

After they eat, they have a moment when he can’t get the frosting off his face, and he asks her to do it for him. It seems like they might kiss, until Matsunaga realizes what’s happening and starts rambling about the whipped cream again. Then he tells her where they are going tomorrow and sends her off to bed. Before she goes to sleep she tells her self she’ll tell him how she feels tomorrow. We also see everyone else in the house alone in their rooms being kept awake by their thoughts.

The next scene is Meeko and Matsunaga on their date. They are having fun looking at the lights and going on the rides. Then they go on the Ferris wheel where they are along together. They end up sitting next to each other, and after a bit of awkwardness, Meeko asks if she can tell him something. Then she just goes for it and says, “I love you. I’m in love with you, Matsunaga. Not as a friend, either... I love you as a man. So, if you’re interested... can we be a couple?”

He kind of reacts like he’s not sure what to say, then asks her to give him a moment. He finally says, “me too, I knew I had to say this sometime.” Then he doesn’t seem to know how to get his words out again. But finally he says, "I love you too. Meeko, I’m in love with you." Meeko is pretty shocked, so he also affirms he loves her "as a woman." Then he explains that’s why he turned Konatsu down. So they finally admitted their feelings, now it’s time to for them to process everything.

The next day, Ryo apologizes to Meeko, and tells her that he wants her to have what she wants, but then earnestly tells her that the next time she starts crying, he is never letting her go. So things are a bit awkward between him and Meeko and him and Matsunaga.

Things are also awkward between Meeko and Matsunaga, Meeko isn’t sure how to act around him now. So of course she ends up accidentally seeing him naked in the bathroom because she didn’t realize it was occupied. After that fiasco, they both admit how awkward it is for both of them, and they start talking. But Meeko still isn’t sure what this means, as they haven’t really defined the terms of their relationship.

Also, tension seem to be building in the house between a lot of them. The new year is coming up, but they all kind of seem at odds, and he says they can’t ring in the New Year like this… Matsunaga takes control and takes them all to the temple of one of their former boarding house residents. Ryugen-san is a Buddhist monk, who looks more like an actor. This is the same person Matsunaga borrowed the car from for Kittneyland.

They all get settled in and little by little they are able to start making some sort of path forward with each other. Soon, they're all getting along like they used to.
Later, Matsunaga and Meeko take some time along to talk about their relationship. Matsunaga says they can’t really be a couple till she graduates. Meeko thinks that is a long time. They then decide they can kiss the day after graduation. She asks how many times, (hahaha), and he says, he imagines a lot. Then they pinky swear on it. Then he leans forward and tenderly kisses her on the forward, then he apologizes like he did something wrong, and moves away from her. But Meeko thinks to herself that she is so happy, she could die.

The last line is her thinking, "But it would’ve been best...if we just dove in...without thinking about anything."

So sweet and timely with Christmas around the corner. Feelings are confessed, both requited and unrequited. :'( I feel so bad for the virgin reindeer. There are heart pounding moments and teary moments, and sometimes they overlap in a touchingly humorous way. I laughed more in this volume than others, but also appreciated that the characters talk to each other. Although the majority of the panels use basic background, they show good movement and emotion, and the details are there when they matter. Sometimes it's not clear who's talking or which character is saying what, but you get the gist, so it's a minor complaint.

Okay, that was actually really good. A nice balance between keeping Ryo super likable and making sure that Matsunaga-san shines as the character you want to root for. That hadn't been true for a few volumes now, so that was a pretty skillful turnaround.

(That image of Ryo standing in the falling snow with the overlong sleeves of his dumb reindeer onesie drooping over his hands, though. Like. The guy put on the world's stupidest outfit for Meeko. How is that not love.)

I particularly liked that Matsunaga-san made a point of reaching out to Ryo and being kind to him, despite knowing that Ryo had also confessed to and been in love with the girl he likes. It's an important character moment for Matsunaga-san, as is making him the central driving force behind bringing all the feuding housemates back together.

(The former housemate priest is a randomly fun character, and I like seeing more of Matsunaga-san's friendships.)

There's an interesting little potential romance ramping up between Ken and Asako; I'm not sure if it's going to go anywhere, but I'd been noticing hints building up over the last couple volumes, so that's an interesting progression as well. For someone who's been cheated on previously, I think she might have a tough time trusting such a blatant playboy, but maybe not...Ken's never once been dishonest, and I think once he fell in love, he'd settle down and make that woman his world. And right now, their chemistry is feeling natural and full of possibilities.

The main romance, of course, is the one that's finally official...sorta...between Meeko and Matsunaga-san. It's mutual, anyway, with a really well-handled confession scene that felt true to their characters and the right around of emotionally squirmy. In this volume and the last, we're finally dropping some of the awkward, messy dynamics and just letting their emotions speak for themselves.

Plus, Meeko is really showing more of her comfort level with Matsunaga-san; I like that when he gets loud or starts lecturing her now, she'll fire right back, understanding him and meeting him at his level. Finally, during some of their interactions in this volume (including the super-sweet cake scene), I was able to acknowledge that their dynamic really does fit her more than the kind, quiet Ryo who just doesn't feed the same level of exciting energy into his interactions with Meeko. She cares about him, but Matsunaga-san brings something out of her that she really, really likes - and it is good for her, I think. (I liked Matsunaga-san's admission in this volume that he gets loud and blushy and awkward in situations where he's embarrassed and doesn't know what to do; it makes him feel a lot more down-to-earth and a lot more like Meeko, honestly. It's making more sense why they're a good match.)

The age gap is still a discussion topic, but a lot of the weirdness is finally being stripped out of it...it's not that Matsunaga-san considers himself Meeko's guardian, but that he feels a responsibility to live up to her family's trust in him as she finishes out high school. They sit down and talk it out and agree that they won't officially begin dating under after she graduates, and then they'll figure out the rest from there, slowly.

They have a good conversation that acknowledges the awkwardness that comes after a confession - you can't just go from "I love you" to Perfect Bliss. There's a whole transitional period that can be hard to navigate, especially when you live in the same house and don't feel right jumping into more physical expressions of affection. I appreciated the raw honesty of these interactions and the little bit of extra realism. So many fictional romantic relationships bypass all those difficult talks and the messy pieces that make up real life, so this felt really refreshing.

I hope the last three volumes stay at this standard - great character moments, a nice mix of heart-wrenching and hilarious scenes (not another awkward encounter in the bathroom!!!), and really interesting storylines for all the characters. I liked seeing Hattori and her husband again, too, and having her be another caring friend and point of stability for Meeko. (Although I do wonder about their restaurant launch...do they even know what they're doing? That part feels as flimsily handwavy as Matsunaga-san's frankly not very great graphic design.)

We close out this volume with a funnysweetsad comic that makes me hurt for Ryo all over again, but at least he's got a cat that absolutely adores him. The cat's spitefulness towards poor Meeko cracks me up.

I still hope Meeko and Ryo can maintain their friendship. I liked that little scene with the Christmas tree; they're both trying, and they're both good people who still care about each other, so hopefully it can work out. And Matsunaga-san is a surprising area of support for that, since he cares deeply about everyone in the house, and about making sure they all stay connected with each other.

The idea of him moving out seems to have been dropped for the moment, but maybe getting out from under Meeko's uncle's roof will be another important step in allowing his relationship with Meeko to develop. I wonder if we're going to see the uncle's reaction to the news at any point...

So guess this was the first volume I hadn’t read yet.

I get a feeling that the editor and/or publisher pressured the mangaka to make sure they mutually confessed or something since it’s been 8 volumes already, but it came off a bit…. Odd. I mean obviously they each had realized how they felt and all and Masanaga had invited her out on the biggest day for couples in Japan, but it still felt… a bit off. Especially with how big he was on not dating before she finished HS etc (which I can’t remember bc I forget if she’s a second year or not rn but is more than an entire year away?)…

So what… they just… don’t do anything for a whole 15 months… all white living together? I mean clearly the narrative will have some more twists and turns based on the way the volume ends, but… idk. I felt like it was done bc it felt it needed doing and then it was like “oh right I forgot the whole conflict here” 🤷🏻.

Anyway, I’ll keep reading, but I couldn’t give this more than 4 stars and that feels a bit generous, although I AM very intrigued in Ken and Asako’s stories…

This series turned out to be soo good. I wasn't in love with the first few volumes, but it has gotten so much better since then! I really feel for Ryo because he is so sweet and caring :( It's rare for me to love both love interests in a manga, so this one is making me SAD.

ALSO, Meeko let Matsunaga-san get away with saying some annoying stuff in the beginning of the series, so it was nice to hear her speak up and set him straight. My favorite moment in this volume was the Ferris wheel moment <3 I can totally see more happening with Ryo in the next few volumes, but as of now I want Meeko and Matsunaga-san to be end game.

Whole series review - A slow-moving series that kept me reading as fast as I could.

The art is stunning and I really like all the characters. I loved the little side plot that involved two of the roommates getting together. So cute!

Ryo-kun deserved better! I honestly wouldn’t have minded if Meeko had gotten together with him! In fact, I would’ve preferred it!

The age gap was really uncomfortable... no excuses there. I know it’s fiction and things work differently for different cultures, but to me; it was gross.
