Lore Chapter Sampler

Rate this book
From the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Darkest Minds comes a sweepingly ambitious, high-octane tale of power, destiny, love and redemption.

Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals, hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality.
Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world in the wake of her family's sadistic murder by a rival line, turning her back on the hunt's promises of eternal glory. For years she's pushed away any thought of revenge against the man--now a god--responsible for their deaths.

Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek out her Castor, a childhood friend of Lore believed long dead, and a gravely wounded Athena, among the last of the original gods.

The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and, at last, a way for Lore to leave the Agon behind forever. But Lore's decision to bind her fate to Athena's and rejoin the hunt will come at a deadly cost--and still may not be enough to stop the rise of a new god with the power to bring humanity to its knees.

Thank you, Netgalley, for an eArc chapter sampler of this!

I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed reading Alexandra Bracken stories! The story kicks off immediately. Who is Castor Achilleos? What exactly is the Agon and what are the rules? Why was Lore's family killed? How will Lore navigate these death traps.

The world and its rules are a lot to take in though. If you persevere through to Chapter 7 though you'll be rewarded with info that'll help you get your bearings and enjoy the story more.

It's a classic "I've left the [mob, gang, team, etc.] and I don't want to be part of it again, but something's happened and it looks like I'll have to be part of it one last time." Which is the kind of story I love. Definitely made me want to buy the book, but I settled for putting a hold on it at the library.

I received this chapter sampler from NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

At first I didn’t like the book. It was way too violent for my taste. I continued to read the chapter sampler (the first six chapters) and I began to enjoy the book. You learn more about the main characters and the world. The writing style gripped me and I wanted to continue reading.

This story begins when the new Agon just started. The Agon was created to punish the nine Greek gods because they rebelled. Every seven years they become mortal and the hunters do everything in their power to kill them and gain the power of the god and become immortal until the next Agon. Lore is the last of de line of Perseides and wants nothing to do with the hunt. But when a mortally injured Athena shows up at her house she has no other choice then join the hunt to get her revenge.

The book is well written and if you don’t mind blood, violence and murder then it could be a good book for you. The story sucks you in and you don’t want to stop reading. Every chapter you learn more about the world and the characters, but also makes you want to know more.

I don’t know for sure if I’m going to read this book, because it might be a bit too violent for me. But that is the only reason that I’m doubtful about reading the book. The story sounds really interesting and I love Greek mythology books. That is why this book deserves 4.5 stars.

This is one of my big hype books for 2021. When I received the alert that I was approved for the galley, I was ecstatic. And then Netgalley emailed to say that there was an error and I was actually only approved for a chapter sampler rather than the actual book. Cue the sadness. Nevertheless, thank you to Netgalley, Alexandra, and Disney-Hyperion for the chance to get a taste of Lore before its release.

The sampler gives us a good idea of the story, the first six chapters really set up the scene and gives some background info as well. In short – I don’t think that my hype has been misplaced.

Those first six chapters left me intrigued and wanting so much more. I did some poking around and found a book subscription box that is including this as their January book and wasted no time signing back up for it.

Lore is based on Greek Mythology in a modern day setting, with some added twists…such as a week-long event every seven years that gives people the opportunity to murder the Gods and take their place and immortality. The Purge? The Hunger Games? Battle Royale? Sure, all of that and more.

Lore is our main character, who has ties to the world although she has tried to forsake it. We all know that you can’t forsake your destiny. As the next Hunt is about to begin, she finds Athena on her doorstep near death and begging for help in exchange for information about Lore’s murdered family.

I MEAN, COME ON. If the cover wasn’t enough, and the synopsis on the back wasn’t enough, and the six chapter sampler wasn’t enough, what will convince you to read this book?

I was lucky enough to have the chance to review the chapter sampler for Lore, and I think it showed a lot of promise. I wouldn't say that I became super invested in the characters or the world, but I'm definitely intrigued enough to check out the full book when it comes out. The world and characters were interesting, and I would like to learn more about the gods and what Aristos is up to because it's clearly nothing good. I was a little confused when I first started reading because it's a lot to take in, but by the 6th chapter (where the sampler ends) I was understanding it a bit more.

After reading the first six chapters from NetGalley, I already wanted more. I loved the friendship between Miles and Lore, and I loved the dynamic between Lore and Athena. I feel that Lore is a strong independent female protagonist. This isn't your typical contemporary fantasy and it was refreshing how different it is. It is also NOTHING like Percy Jackson which is something that I loved. I have already pre-ordered the book and can't wait to read the rest.

How the heck do you rate a chapter sampler?
Anyway, I am intrigued to pick up this book once it is published. I will be requesting a copy from my library immediately, hopefully I'll be able to finish the story as soon as it releases Jan 5th.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with a copy of the sampler.... Such a tease!
