Final Dawn #3

A Dark Horizon

Rate this book
The Earth is a husk, humanity is long extinct and Charon has used his stolen Solar Core to harvest Proxima Delta’s star, dooming its populated system. The crew of the Adeona are divided – Jack thinks they should keep fighting, but Rogan and Brackitt just want to lay Tuner to rest in Detri.

By going their separate ways, Jack gets the chance to testify before the Ministry. But their bureaucracy is almost as exhausting as the hitman sent to kill him, and time is running out. Jack and Klik are left to unravel a new and even greater conspiracy alone.

Can Jack stop Charon from creating his singularity? Or will the temptation to see Amber again prove too great?

A Dark Horizon is the third book in the Final Dawn series. If you like page-turning space operas, then you’ll love this exciting science fiction adventure.

'It was about as smart as driving up the beaches of Normandy in a Mini Cooper.'

The Autonoma have had enough, and want to go home. 'Why should they fight to save "fleshies?"'
With Jack left alone with only the reptilian Klik for company they get caught up in the wake of a stolen star, a collapsing galaxy, and an off the rails human who will do anything (including ripping a hole in an entire system) to get back to Earth.

This series keeps getting better and better!
The more we read about Jack, his team of Autonoma and now Klik, the more invested we become. They're a fantastic bunch of characters, on a beautifully crafted world, that have carved a perilous journey of heroism for themselves.

Such a brilliant series 👏

Recap: Jack must stop Everett Reeves from building a black hole and destroying billions of lives.

Review: Realising that things weren't going to resolve in this book was at first worrying as I got towards the end then with relief as we learn there will be another book - yay! I really like Jack's relationship with the robots and his semi-mentor like status with Klik, she is a cool character so I look forward to more from her. Jack's goodbye to Earth was very sad so the twist at the end of the book was a great moment, nothing like a good cliffhanger. This being book three, it felt very much like settling back in with old friends which is what you want with a series. This space opera is a smooth read with solid worldbuilding, good pace and a dollop of humour.

Rattles Along Quite nicely

Another book in the series, more adventures and odd characters in a grubby scrapyard of a universe. Will look forward to the next one.

Excellent writing once again, tears, laughs and everything in between makes for a gripping and brilliant read. I am loving the series and all the characters portrayed within, they are really starting to become a group of friends.
This exciting chapters sees the Automata end up having to deal with a moral dilemma unlike anything any of them have ever faced before. It could be down to those little, and big creations to save billions of squidgies and the galaxies they inhabit.
meanwhile our reluctant hero and his new sidekick end up fighting for their very survival, which I am sure has become the norm. Double and triple crossed at all turns they decide to take on Charon/Everet before he can cause further damage, death and destruction from happening.
One thing I have to ask is why oh why do authors keep killing our favourite characters? yes we lose someone, but there could be a shining light at the end of the tunnel, either that or it could just be the devil holding a neon carrot. Either way I loved this instalment and wait with bated breath for the next trip on the merry go round that is the final dawn series.

A Dark Horizon continues almost directly on from Thief of Stars and hits the ground running.

The pacing, character development and story are all developing as they were in the previous books of The Final Dawn series; which is to say, great.

The book itself feels like a book of two halves; the first being.. I can only describe it as 'corridor book', getting us from Thief of Stars to either the other half of this book, or the next book; and the other half continues as I would expect. I'm not quite sure if that makes sense but it's the feeling I got on my first read through.

That said, it in no way makes it a bad book or entry into The Final Dawn series; I just feel like it would have been difficult for any book to follow Thief of Stars. I still finished it in two sittings within 24 hours.

The 'corridor' allows us to explore more of the world of The Final Dawn as well as the broader Dark Star Panorama universe; especially the politics, which has fleshed out the world even more.

I get the sense on reflection there's going to have been a lot of setup in this book that's going to pay off as I make my way through the series and universe.

A very solid 4/5.

Jack's murderous rampage continues as he chases Everett across the galaxy. It's odd how it's ignored that jack and his friends leave a trail of death, and Everett is the evil one.
The last 2 humans alive are doing exactly what you expect humans to do, kill & destroy planets it's ingrained into the human condition.

Lots of action and intrigue, who wanted the council gone? I'm sure jack will kill a few people to find out.

This is the third book in the series and as usual I suggest starting at the beginning of the series to get the best from it.
We meet the familiar characters from previous books who are still fighting the good fight
It's a book where wrong/right and good/bad seem to face each other on every page- it all comes together to create a highly entertaining read though

Jack and Klik are continuing on in their quest to stop Charon. But are they alone? What about Adeona and the rest of the gang? Will the ministry listen? So many questions. And the world-building continues. As an avid science fiction reader, I have visited many realms and yet this one seems refreshingly new. The characters behave in ways that feel authentic, with engaging action.

Fun

This series is good fun, reminding me somewhat of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the universe,
Yes the series has at least 42 improbable events, but enjoy it for what it is.
I hope the next book comes soon.

A good read. Part of the series, and fast paced. It’s pure science fiction and rather light reading. Just what I wanted at the moment. It’s not a dark dystopian horror show, more of an adventure set in space as the good guys try to outwit the bad guys.
