mükemmel her haliyle.En önemlisi benim bam telim dediğim bir yıkım hikayesini destansı şiirsel bir dille anlatılmış olması; hep hiroşimalar unutulmaz! sloganıyla geçen gençliğimden gelen bu kitabın gencecik yazarı artık benim yazarlarım arasında daha sonra eserle ilgili yazacaklarım var daha önceki yıllarda da araştırmıştım yine başa döndüm yazacağım yakın zamanda bence mutlaka okunmalı!

Finished it in one sitting, because there was no way I could put it down. This book was emotional perfection. Feeling so much and so strongly, in a story that shines with the power of humanity. Have your tissues ready

Tam bir rollercoaster! Nasıl kırılgan, nasıl naif ama aynı zamanda inanılmaz haşin. Pek çok yönden hüzünlü, sarsıcı, zorlu ama kesinlikle çok güzel ve ilham verici bir hikaye. Hatrımızda uzun süre aynı hissiyatla kalacağına eminim. 💔

Molto bello. Una storia piena di sentimento e tristezza che emoziona, ma che mostra anche come le tragedie portino ad un coraggio inaspettato. Il libro è raccontato con una grande delicatezza, quasi minimizzando la tragedia di fondo: non c'è né odio né rancore per l'avversario, ma traspare grande disperazione per una promessa non mantenuta, anche se impossibile da mantenere. La storia corre tra due diversi piani temporali: oggi e il 6 agosto 1945, in una spola tra due generazioni, tra chi ha vissuto la tragedia e chi la rivive e ne è ugualmente coinvolto attraverso il racconto. Unica nota stonata è la conclusione,

I'm almost speechless at this book. Almost. But forced to find a few words so I can share my love. This could well already by my book of 2020. The writing is just breathtaking, a mixture of poetry and prose, with gorgeous sketches scattered through as well. Just exquisite. And the story. Oh, the story. It's about the power of books. About a lifetime of guilt. About love and hope. Set in Hiroshima, right after the bomb. Don't miss this one. Just don't.

Didn’t care much for the rushed story, perhaps the meaning got lost both in translation and audiobook. The illustrations in the paperback could have double the effect. An average story that failed to evoke strong feelings for me.

This was not my usual type of book, that being said I found it absolutely mesmerising to the point I was unable to put it down.
The Last Paper Crane follows the story of Icharo in 1945 Hiroshima. On what seemed a usual day at home with his friend Hiro, an almighty atomic bomb lands that changes life forever. Trying to keep his friend alive and moving on to hunt for Hiro's 5 year old sister Keiko, where she was left at day care centre before the bomb was hit.
This tale takes you on a huge wave of utter heart wrenching emotions that will leave an imprint on you like no other book has before. Even the formatting was unique to me and the illustrations throughout opened a haunting window to that dreadful day. The two very different writing styles featured through this book was perfect.
This is a book about hope and compassion, of true friendships and sacrifice. A story that needed to be told and will live on for generations to come.

Ichario has held on to a secret for many many years. Along with that secret, he holds guilt that has torn him up inside. He’s now ready to share this secret with his Granddaughter…
We are transported back to minutes before the bombing in Hiroshima, we experience the unfolding of events as he recalls them and find out how he survived along with what caused his life time of guilt.
What did I think?
I once again find myself realising that in spite of my proclamations that I don’t enjoy learning about history, I do enjoy it – I just prefer it where there’s a human interest story attached. And boy, was there a human interest story here!
The Last Paper Crane is quite possibly the most beautiful book that I’ve ever read, in both the tangible product, and the words inside them. It is perfect. Written in a series of free verse, haiku and standard prose it was engaging and emotive. I felt invested in the characters and enjoyed the switch in the writing style as a way to determine whereabouts in time we are with the story.
It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book in a day and maybe we can blame Covid-19 and self-isolation but I really want to say it’s because this book was simply wonderful. I cried at the end – it was such a release of emotion.
Don’t miss this book. I don’t think anything else I read this year will match up. It’s sublime.

Kerry Drewery racconta questa storia con una semplicità e una sensibilità strabilianti, tocca con mano il cuore, ti entra fin dentro le profondità dell'anima. È una storia difficile da scrivere ma anche da leggere. È un romanzo potente e profondo, un vero pugno nello stomaco, che racconta una delle pagine più buie e dolorose della nostra Storia che devono essere raccontate per poterle conoscere, ricordarle e non dimenticarle mai. Per non ripeterle mai più. Ambientata a Hiroshima nel 1945, la storia segue Ichiro, un giovane ragazzo che attraverso i suoi occhi ci narra ciò che è successo quando gli americani hanno sganciato la bomba atomica sulla sua città e le conseguenze avvenute dopo l’esplosione: shock, dolore, confusione e lotta per la sopravvivenza. Muziki’nin büyükbabası Ichiro, Japonya’ya atılan nükleer bomba ile mahvolan insanlardan biri. Evde arkadaşı Hiro ile beraber otururken bomba ile tanışan ve sağ kalan sayılı insanlardan olmuşlar. Kız kardeşi ve annelerini aramak için minik bir yolculuğa çıktıklarında kayıpların gittikçe artması, birbirlerine daha çok sarılmalarına vesile olmuş. Yaşanan olayların üzerinden yıllar geçtiğinde bile kağıttan son bir turna kuşu o günden kalan en güçlü umut haline gelmiş. 🕊
Kitabı iki farklı şekilde okuyoruz. İlk kısımda Muziki’nin büyükbabası ile yaşadıklarını, ikinci kısımda ise büyükbabası Ichiro’nun gerçekleri anlattığı kısmı görüyoruz. Kitabın ilk sayfalarından itibaren olaylar hem net hem hızlı geliştiği için sayfalar kayıp gidiyor. Gözyaşları içinde okurken, ne ara bittiğini anlayamıyorsunuz. Yazarın dilinin sadeliği akıcı anlatımı desteklerken, vurucu cümleleri insanı derinden etkiliyor. 🥀
O kadar çok ağladım ki anlatamam. Hiroşima’da yaşananları hepimiz başka kitaplarda okumuş, filmlerde görmüş olabiliriz. Empati yaptığımızı da sanıyor olabiliriz. Turna kuşu ile ilgili onlarca hikayeye de denk gelmişizdir. Ama bu kitap gerçekten farklıydı. “Umut” kelimesini sarsıcı bir şekilde hissediyorsunuz. Empati yaptığımı sanarken bile yaşadıklarını okuduğumda utandım. Asla aklımdan çıkmayacak kısmı ise, “Hangi bomba böyle bir şeyi yapabilir?” cümlesi. Parçalanan aileler, yıkılan evler, yanan sokaklar, sonu getirilen yaşamlar... tek bir bombanın hayatınızdaki her şeyi bitirdiğini düşündüğünüz noktaya getirmesi... Küçücük bir çocuksunuz, ve sizin gibi çocuk kişiler ile o yangının içinde ailenizi arama çabanız... Beş yaşındaki minik bir çocuğa, yaptığınız bir turna kuşu ile umut bağlamanız... Gerçekten bu okuduklarım insanı derinden sarsan ve ağlatan bir hikaye. 🥺🙈
En güzel kısmı ise kitabın +11 olması. Her gencin okuyabilmesi, böyle bir konuyu genç yaşta anlayacak olması çok hoş. Lütfen bu güzel kitabı alıp önce kendiniz sonra çevrenizdeki herkese okutun. Anne ve babalarınıza verin ki okuduğunuz kitapların güzelliği görsünler. 😍🙏🏻

Kağıttan Son Turna Kuşu olay itibariyle dünyanın en trajik olaylarından birini anlatıyor ancak kitap okuyucuya yeni hiçbir şey sunmuyor. Ne hikaye olarak, ne karakter olarak, ne kurgu olarak. Kağıdın bu kadar değerli olduğu günümüzde ironik olarak günümüzü anlattığı sayfalar ise ziyan. Biraz resimlerle ve sondaki turna kuşu atölyesiyle biraz renklendirilmek istenmiş ama grafikler mi, oynanabilirlik mi sorusuna her zaman oynanabilirlik cevabını vermişimdir.
Dolayısıyla hele de yine benzer bir savaş hikayesini anlatmasına rağmen bükük dudaklara sebep olan Kardeşimin Koruyucusu'ndan sonra çok daha hissiz, çok daha yapılandırılmış bir çalışmaydı.

I didn’t realise this book was a YA novel until after I’d bought it and I must admit I was slightly disappointed as I’ve not read YA for years. How wrong I was!!
This book was unbelievably moving. I hate to admit that I really don’t know much about the horrific events of Hiroshima and this book gave a harrowing perspective told through a teenage boy’s quest to save a five year old girl from the pain and destruction they lived through. The style of writing in parts 1 & 3 plus the haikus worked extremely well and I loved the author’s way of expressing both the distress of the life-changing events of Hiroshima, as well as the hope that comes from the individual human stories within such a catastrophe. A fantastic, short read that has enlightened me to learn more about Hiroshima.

The style of writing in parts 1 & 3 plus the haikus worked extremely well and I loved the author’s way of expressing both the distress of the life-changing events of Hiroshima, as well as the hope that comes from the individual human stories within such a catastrophe. A fantastic, short read that has enlightened me to learn more about Hiroshima.

This is a haunting tale about a young boy who was in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb fell. He survives the attack and finds himself responsible for looking after his friends younger sister, only after war of course comes even more chaos and heartbreak, extreme challenges and both physical and emotional hardship is to follow. This is a powerfully written novel that will stay with me for a long time.

Kerry Drewery kennen vielleicht einige von euch schon von ihrer Martha Reihe. Mir war der Name zwar geläufig, lesen wollte ich das Buch aber aufgrund der Hiroshima Thematik.
Das Buch ist in drei Teile aufgebaut, wobei sich diese durch mehrere Gründe unterschieden. So spielen Teil 1 und 3 in der Gegenwart und man liest aus der Sicht von Mizuki. In Teil 2 begleitet man seinen Großvater Ichiro, als dieser noch ein Junge war. Man starten am 6. August, dem Tag als die Atombombe auf Hiroshima abgeworfen wurde.
Ihr könnte euch sicherlich vorstellen, dass dies keine leichte Kost ist. So ist man live dabei, als es passiert und erlebt die Nachwirkungen unmittelbar danach, aber auch die, wo sich erst später zeigen. Ich fand es zutiefst erschreckend und bedrückend, diese Hilfslosigkeit und Ohnmacht. Die Autorin transportierte die Gefühle so gut an mich, dass mir die Geschichte richtig nahe ging.
Die Teile unterscheiden sich noch in ihrem Stil. So ist 2 Teil flüssig und bildhaft aus der Ich - Perspektive von Ichiro erzählt. Was die Eindrücke und Erlebnisse noch einprägsamer macht. Hiroşima'ya nükleer bomba atıldığında Ichiro, arkadaşı Hiro ile evde oturuyordu. Bu olay ik arkadaşın hayatını alt üst etti. Sevdiklerine kavuşmak için çıktıkları yolculukta onları daha fazla kayıp, acı, zorluk bekliyordu.
Kitabın ilk kısmında Ichiro'nun torunuyla olan sohbetini okurken ikinci kısımda ise yıllardır içinde tuttuğu sırlarını öğreniyoruz.
Kitapta neredeyse her şeyini kaybetmiş bir gencin yaşadıklarını, çabasını ve hayatı boyunca içinde taşıdığı pişmanlık duygusuna tanık oluyoruz. Tabii ki yaşamadan böyle bir olayı tam olarak kavrayabilmemiz mümkün değil ama bu roman savaşın dehşetini okura oldukça iyi aktarıyor bence.

There are always so many sides to any story. Since the victors write history, we end up having a lot of information about some events and hardly anything about another. This is probably why, despite reading a considerable chunk of historical fiction, I have never had an opportunity to read about Hiroshima.
This is a simply told story of great hardship and mind-numbing events. It is written by someone who in her introduction talks of how, despite having no direct connection to the event, felt the need to put this down in words. The war and related details are minor backgrounds, and the focus is all on an old man telling his grandson for the first time how the day the bomb fell on Hiroshima was for him. There is just one point of view at any given time, two styles of narration and very evocative illustrations. The book is short, and the ending a lot different from what I thought it would be given the type of conversation that took place in the preceding pages. It was a refreshing read among my other usual genres, and the paper crane in itself was a very heart-rending image that carried on throughout the entire tale. It is such a short story in its entirety that there is nothing more that I can add to a review of it.

It’s pretty rare to read from the Japanese POV when it comes to WWII novels, and I think Kerry Drewery did a fantastic job at crafting this story. With the author’s words and prose, you’re transported back to 1945, Hiroshima, when the Americans dropped the atomic bomb. It shows the ugly side of what war and the hunger for power does to the people of a country. Reading this book is pretty timely as well, considering the change of the political landscape in our reality.
The Last Paper Crane is a story about courage, love and resilience, and I’m sure it will pull your heartstrings.

Dieses Buch hat mich so tief berührt, dass ich es nur portionsweise, mal hier mal da eine Seite, lesen konnte und das mich nachdrücklich in meinen weiteren Gedanken begleiten wird. Wer sich mit der Geschichte und den Ereignissen rund um Hiroshima beschäftigt hat, weiß, welches Leid diese Menschen ertragen mussten. Die Autorin hat ein beeindruckendes, emotionales, tief bewegendes Werk erschaffen, das ein Band vom 6. August 1945 bis in die heutige Zeit spannt und die Grausamkeit eines einzigen kurzen Lichtblitzes und seine Folgen aus Sicht von zwei jungen Menschen erzählt. Die Geschichte wird teilweise in Haikus erzählt, begleitet von einfühlsamen, bewegenden Illustrationen der bekannten Illustratorin Natsko Seki. Ein must-read und unbedingte Empfehlung.

This book deals with the aftermath of the Hiroshima nuclear bomb, portraying beautifully that the gilt and the burden of the survival. I loved the writing style.

Kerry Drewey, escritora a tiempo completo, ha sido coordinadora del BookStart y BookTrust. Sus libros han llegado como finalistas en concurso de escritura de guiones para niños de la BBC y tiene una licenciatura de primera clase en escritura profesional.
"La última grulla de papel" es su última novela literaria independiente. En ella presenta una historia de esperanza y superación ambientada en un hecho trágico que asoló la ciudad de Hiroshima en 1945, una bomba atómica llamada "Little Boy".
Según la tradición japonesa, si construyes 1.000 grullas de papel los dioses cumplirán tu mayor deseo. Dicha tradición se hizo popular gracias a Sadako Sasasi, una niña de dos años que vivía a menos de dos kilómetros del lugar en donde cayó la bomba atómica. Con los años desarrolló leucemia a causa de los gases y residuos tóxicos. Una amiga le contó la leyenda y ella dedicó cada día que estuvo ingresada en el hospital a fabricar grullas con la firme esperanza de sanarse. Lamentablemente falleció antes de acabar su misión y sus amigos, como muestra de amor, terminaron la tarea por ella. Hoy en día, Sadako posee una estatua en el Parque conmemorativo de la Paz de Hiroshima que representa la esperanza y la paz y sirve como recuerdo de los niños que perecieron por las causas de la bomba.
Kerry Drewey tomó como referencia esta historia para crear la suya propia en donde las grullas de origami cobran un papel principal, aunque poco evidente en el desarrollo de la trama.
A través de una original narración que discurre entre la prosa, el verso libre y los haikus, Kerry hace gala de su destreza con la pluma y regala al público juvenil (y no tan juvenil) una obra magistral sobre el sufrimiento, las promesas, la superación y la amistad en unos tiempos en los que no queda nada para seguir luchando.
En cualquiera de los tres formatos la lectura es ágil, fluida y dinámica. La autora escribe de forma franca, sin ambages ni complejidad estilista realizando un viaje directo a los sentimientos humanos describiéndolos con naturalidad y énfasis.
Son dos las voces que llevan a cabo el desarrollo de la trama; Ichiro, cuya historia se desarrolla entre Hiroshima y Tokio del año 1945, dará sentido y pondrá el toque dramático en la segunda parte, mientras que Mizuki, quien realiza una exposición de los hechos en la Hiroshima reconstruida del 2018, dotará a la trama de esperanza y color.
Cada parte se caracteriza por un formato de escritura diferente. La voz de Ichiro se basa en la prosa común, mientras que Mizuki juega intercalando haikus y verso libre.

Así mismo, expresa muy bien la devastación, la pérdida de vidas, las consecuencias físicas y mentales que deja a la población un acontecimiento de tal calibre y el abandono al que se ve sumido toda una civilización aparentemente poderosa, creando una ambientación realista, creíble y suficiente para englobar la trama.
Sin duda alguna, lejos de construir una novela en donde los datos y acontecimientos históricos se conviertan en el eje principal, Kerry enfoca la atención del lector en los propios personajes de un modo sublime. Con esmero y maestría el lector se adentra en la psique de Ichiro y Mizuki descubriendo de manera casi palpable los sentimientos, emociones y pensamientos que rodean a ambas figuras.
En Ichiro se muestra la agonía, el desasosiego, la incertidumbre, la desesperanza y el miedo que siente al enfrentarse de súbito a una situación completamente desoladora e inconcebible. Del mismo modo, es el personaje cuya evolución se muestra más evidente a corto plazo. Ichiro se enfrenta a muy duras y diferentes situaciones que le llevarán a una toma de decisiones cuyo objetivo es cumplir una promesa y ser fiel a sí mismo.
La lucha por la supervivencia, la reacción humana ante la perspectiva de la muerte próxima o la solidaridad en tiempos difíciles son temas que se tratan con respeto e invitan a la reflexión.
Sin duda alguna, Kerry ha creado una novela magnífica que atrapa desde el primer momento, llegando incluso a devorarla de una sentada, que mantiene al lector en vilo y lo hace vibrar con cada página.
En conclusión, "La última grulla de papel" es una novela que presenta un acontecimiento histórico, no muy lejano en el tiempo, que además de darlo a conocer invita al lector a la reflexión y a la creación de valores como la empatía. Un canto a la esperanza, la amistad y la lucha incansable por cumplir las promesas. Una obra que emociona, impacta y deja huella. Un libro conmovedor que no puede faltar en ninguna estantería y que recomiendo tanto a jóvenes como adultos.

This book really surprised me. With an adamant aversion to verse novels, I thought that I would struggle to get through it with around half of the book written in that way, even though verse does not take long to read. However, I found the book gripping all the way through, with the verse written more like prose rather than a more intricate poetry style.
There were not too many main characters in the Last Paper Crane so it was easy to focus on them and see their development as the story went on. For example, it was heartbreaking yet fulfilling to see Ichiro have to adapt so quickly when Hiroshima got bombed and how Keiko became his sole focus for pretty much his entire life. This made the ending even more hard-hitting and emotional for the characters. Although we do not see much of Mizuki, or know much about her, it is clear that her grandfather means a lot to her and the impact his story has on her is profound.
The plot of the book moved very quickly, in retrospect; although Ichiro’s story was very well done, the parts of the book set in modern Japan with Mizuki were slightly rushed. For instance, it was very convenient that she almost immediately solved her grandfather’s problem, alleviating decades of guilt and regret by essentially clicking a link on the internet. However, her car journey with Ichiro provides a light contrast to the rest of the story, showing that they can both find at least some happiness.
Overall, a great book spreading awareness about a key time in history. I particularly appreciated that the reader was never told why the Hiroshima survivors were dying so suddenly; it made the reality of the radiation poisoning even more sad and important.

Overall, a great book spreading awareness about a key time in history. I particularly appreciated that the reader was never told why the Hiroshima survivors were dying so suddenly; it made the reality of the radiation poisoning even more sad and important.
