At some time most people have given a passing thought to backpacking or at the least visiting less travelled routes to mysterious destinations. In 1994, a young Matt (a true Londoner) set off on his first adventure and quite by chance met a well-travelled Australian - Baz - in La Paz. Matt's jottings on their many trips together, despite living on opposite sides of the world, make up this honest, down to earth, humorous narrative of their numerous journeys and misadventures. Matt's engaging style of writing will draw you in to understand that it's not WHERE you travel but with WHOM!
Matt James Malpass was born and raised on a housing estate North West London, England. Aged 16, he entered Willesden Technical College, to learn his trade as a housepainter. Shortly after, Matt travelled extensively for many years. In a rundown car, August 2002, long before Brexit, he crossed the Channel to begin a new life on the Bassin d’Arcachon, south-west France. Today, he manages his own painting business and enjoys his pastime, writing imaginative tales. An outlook he still holds close is his old school motto: “Virtus non Stemma” In plain English. “Worth not Birth”
What a fantastic read! This book shows how friendships can start and endure over many years even though the two friends quite literally live on opposite sides of the world to each other. We get to see how this friendship evolved through a common interest in travelling the globe on a very small budget. The exploits of two friends as they meet up each year in a new country to explore is funny and informative;also gripping to see what trouble with the locals they will get into next. Language is no barrier to these two globe trotters as Baz can always be understood in any language when beer is on the menu. A perfect read any time of year.
I've read this book in two formats - electronic and paperback - and it works just well either way. If you are missing foreign travel now, then you will thoroughly enjoy this book. The escapades of Matt and Baz will have you engrossed as you read on to see what they will get up to next. If you have never indulged in this kind of travel you will be equally fascinated by Matt's irreverent descriptions of each country, its people and customs. Be warned that you should have a world map handy. Great fun reading which leaves you with an itch to travel whatever age you are.
Bravo
A fantastic read of two friends who have traveled the world together. Well worth a read if you love to travel. Once started I couldn’t put the book down. Matt is an inspiring writer.
Having read all of Matt's books, I can honestly say that this is definitely another book.
Well written, observant and witty, Matt captures the essence of two friends' adventures, something so many of us are missing in 2020.
Give it a go, you won't be disappointed, you might even enjoy it and it will bring back memories and dreams of travelling, which are all but forgotten after this sh1tty year.
