As a child of the 1950s I had high hopes of finding out the key events that may have shaped my upbringing. This book, however, did not resonate with myself : it had few or no references to working class poverty, the monotonous black and grey of life and clothing, the countless number of bombsites we used as play areas, the absence of cars in terraced streets, knowing the neighbours, the frequent family get togethers as most lived close to one another to name but some of my memories in the 1950s.
This book by Peter Lewis starts with (to me) a confusing chapter which does not inspire to read further but then moves to a more theme based style with compartments for women/fashion, the Cold War, The Bomb, Youth, the Establishment , Television, etc. It conveys some of the austerity of the times but is geared more to celebrities, culture, Big Events in politics, space, fashion etc. Not a world I had any feel for or direct experience.

This book covers the ground, at times spewing out titbits of events and quotations which occasionally rams home a point to grinding effect.
