Jay and company have survived the initial stages of the experiment. They have had to overcome everything from their dinner trying to eat them to murderous psychopaths trying to carve out a private fiefdom.
Worse, they aren't even aware of the impact the dissent among the aliens running this experiment are having on them.
Now, all the survivors seem to want a piece of Jay, which when they are a bunch of hot girls, doesn't see entirely bad.
He just has to sort out who is trying to manipulate him and who wants to be on Team Jay. All the while, finding a way for humanity to survive.
David Burke is a mild manner something who tries to enjoy each day a bit more than the last. It dawned upon him at some point that life was racing him by and he wasn’t nearly as young as he used to be.
So now he spends his nights and lunch hours and any other free time he can putting down on paper all the stories that have collected up over a life time.
I really like it overall, but does mc have slavery fetish? Jasmine is brainwashing and controlling everyone and mc knows this. I mean they have talks about the issue but somehow he is fine with everyone being controlled, even people in his own group. It's just super frustrating, freaking do something! Even if Jasmine has good intentions, act of using her skill on allies is already totally unforgivable and in sense even worse than taking slaves. I mean she's on mental control mode 24/7. Mc is basically like "Yeah... My friends and people around me are being enslaved and mindraped, but I guess I'll see where this goes. Oh, and we have person who can amplify abilities around too but lets just let her hang around with Jasmine" Even if he doesn't care about his team or the random girls, at least give him an self preservation or fear. I mean Jasmine's skill is much more scary than actually dying.
I'm sorry but this is totally ridiculous, to me it just seems like he is being retarded and utterly indifferent to others at the same time. I just want to scream and bang my head to the wall because he is totally aware of all this and even using his Iron Will to resists it but it just doesn't seem to phase him that Jasmine is actively controlling people, even himself. It's just so far from anything actual person act like so it totally takes me away from the story. Even his teammates basically shrug all this off. Are these characters not humans? Are these characters some type of hivemind that are born to obey one leader and that why they don't care? I'm clearly mission something here.
3 to maybe 3.5 stars, not as good as the first book. It was okay and I still like the characters but was just not as into it as the first book. I feel like in this one I am just screaming at the MC to not do or do something very easy to get him out of the situation he is in. This one also brings up the complex relationship of one guy and multipull woman but it comes up over and over. The story jumps a little over the place at times as well. I just found myself not enjoy the story as much as the first book and was less invested in the general plot twist and turn. I still like the series but I am not as looking forward to the next book as I was after I read the first book in this series.
Was hoping another book could pull it together. . .
I was very disappointed. The main character is one of the worst examples of dense bulkhead protagonist I have ever read. It takes it to an absurd degree that breaks the story. Given the stakes, the number of conversations had with partners and the entire situation, it is unbelievable how he acts.
"Re-read October 2025. I am going to be surprised one day when I read a previous review and ask myself what I was thinking. That day is not today. I still get amazed that the exact thoughts I had while reading this time were the same as when I first read the book. At least I am consistent."
Not as good as the first book, but to be honest the first book in the series is usually the best because everything is so new. Jay had the problem of being his own worst enemy in this book. He put things off for so long not wanting to deal with situations just to have them come back and bite him in the ass Overall it was still a pretty good book.
His inability to get past his now outmoded ideals of monogamy becomes painful to read, but is obviously meant to be a major plot device (unnecessary, imo). There is enough other stuff going on to challenge them so this seems belaboured.
If you liked the first book (which was a bit better but not radically) you should enjoy this; but we'll have to see where it goes from here.
I'm pleased to say that I enjoyed this book, albeit slightly less than the first, but so goes many a series.
Personally, I don't care too much for the daily life of a harem protagonist. So when it's just the MC describing his routine (that of course involves having sex a half dozen times and giving solo time to various girls), I found myself skimming. I skimmed no more than 10-15% of the book though, with much of that being in the first part of the story.
Thankfully, the plot got going and then kept moving. I skimmed pretty much every sex scene in this book other than the scene with a new girl since it developed her character. All of the other scenes with other characters felt kinda like filler since they were pretty much known commodities by this point.
Regardless, I am enjoying the overall ride this series is providing. Onto the next one!
Introduction: Greetings from the ice-clad world of HowlStrom, fellow readers. I am Kiba Snowpaw, a seasoned gamer and wielder of ice magic. This chilling tale of survival, intrigue, and complex relationships resonates deeply with the frosty rhythms of my homeland. Let’s dive into the heart of this frosty narrative.
Basic Plot Summary: In "Descend Vol 2: Coming Together", Jay and his companions find themselves navigating the treacherous terrains of an alien experiment. After surviving the initial perils, they face further challenges, from the unseen manipulations of the overseeing extraterrestrials to interpersonal dynamics within their own group. With humanity's survival hanging in the balance, Jay must discern friend from foe and make crucial decisions.
Analysis/Evaluation: The narrative, blending elements of science fiction and fantasy, captivates with its unique premise. However, it is the moral and ethical dilemmas presented, alongside the gripping action sequences, that truly set this tale apart. From the subtle influences of alien dissent to the more overt struggles Jay faces with his companions, Burke masterfully keeps the readers on their toes.
Characters: The heart of any story lies in its characters. Jay emerges as a multifaceted protagonist – brave, compassionate, yet filled with internal conflicts. His companions, each with distinct personalities and motivations, add depth and layers to the narrative. However, it is their collective dynamics, filled with tension, trust, betrayal, and camaraderie, that truly elevate the story.
Structure: Burke employs a clear and coherent structure, ensuring readers remain engrossed without being overwhelmed. The narrative flows seamlessly, with twists and turns that continually surprise, yet never feel forced.
Impact: The chilling impact of the tale is reminiscent of the long winters of HowlStrom. Emotions ranging from excitement to fear grip the reader, making them ponder deeper existential questions and drawing parallels with their own lives.
Hook and Thesis: The mystery surrounding the alien experiment and its true purpose acts as a compelling hook, pulling readers into the heart of the narrative. The underlying thesis seems to revolve around survival, trust, and the lengths to which one might go when faced with insurmountable odds.
Praise and Critique: Burke deserves commendation for crafting a unique, engaging narrative with well-developed characters. However, certain aspects, such as the portrayal of some relationships and the occasional reliance on clichés, could benefit from further refinement.
Evaluation: Despite minor flaws, "Descend Vol 2: Coming Together" stands as a thrilling installment in the Descend series. It masterfully balances action with deep introspection, making it a worthy read. From the icy expanses of HowlStrom, I bestow upon this tale a rating of 4 out of 5 frosty stars.
Comparison: While echoes of tales like "The Maze Runner" and "The Hunger Games" can be discerned, Burke’s narrative carves its own unique path. The blend of sci-fi and fantasy, combined with deep interpersonal dynamics, sets it apart from its contemporaries.
Conclusion: In the cold silence of HowlStrom, tales of bravery, trust, and survival resonate deeply. "Descend Vol 2: Coming Together" is one such tale, a beacon of warmth amidst the frost. While it may not be perfect, its strengths far outweigh its flaws. As the snows of HowlStrom swirl around, I find myself eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this enthralling saga.
May the cold winds of HowlStrom guide your path, fellow readers.
The author has a death wish for humanity. Nowhere does it say that this is a terror-horror story. Nowhere does it warn potential readers about the extreme violent and apocalyptic content. As if being a lab-rat-abducted by aliens was not impossible enough (to survive and adapt), the author kills off with a paragraph or two 20% of the Chinese Population, by bringing in a warmonger alien race called the Forlorn. It is already skewed enough, irrational enough to promote abductions by alien races for experimentation. Now the author, places all of us humans at the risk of total extermination, torture, gore, experimentation, eternal slavery, etc. Like a sociopath or psychopath, the author writes all of this without any remorse, responsibility or consequence. How many years in jail would a military tribunal condemn someone responsible for 600-800 million deaths? For the mass-constant-rapings/torture/abductions of all those women? Did the author even consider the universal human rights (never ever mentions any remorse or how irrational and delusional this story is)? This author does not realize the sanctity of freedom, property and life. There are things that are off the table. I think this author needs therapy and possible institutionalization. It is not enough that the author skews the rules to force groups of 100 women to become subservient sex slaves to sub-par men. It would never ever happen in any situation or conditions on Earth. So what is the point? What is the author trying to say/prove? It is not enough that the author places aphrodisiacs in the water to force sexual intercourse and breeding. All of the women in this place suffer an extreme case of Stockholm Syndrome. To make things even worse, the author makes this isekai-fantasy novel series a dystopia-apocalyptic story filled with extreme violence (Blood and Gore) without warnings to underage kids. Everybody is responsible for their actions and omissions, especially authors that hide behind fiction and science fiction genres to "out" their sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies. Again this story would have been good enough without the sex, without the Forlorn genocide and threat. Why destroy everybody? What does the author gain by writing stories like this one?
A late review from the Coin Cage of Love, but the bosses can't yell at me yet. We once again had a "so nice they played it twice" jig and no tampering to sound systems was done this time. We aren't sure we could have lasted another marathon set after the what they found for the last one. I digress, let's get into this so the bosses will stop yelling at us.
This installment was easy to drone out at times. There is a lot of filler parts where it's training or sections you question even needing to have in. And I feel this is backed by the abrupt "oh crap, this is going to go on forever if I don't force this go advance" later portion of the book. Some of this filler seemed alright, but just harped the same stuff with different wording. Yes, we understand the MC has to be a white knight with lofty ideals and digging in deep into that trench, but it could have had better variation than was offered. Especially when it couldn't hold attention all that well.
For the break, at least for those of you who are interested in that, we enjoyed a light lunch while updating the character sheets we made during the first book.
One point I would love to really point out before ending this is how Jay and Jasmine panned out. From their point of view, they admit she was a major threat - several times. Jay didn't want to do anything about it either (white knight wannabe) and some of the girls kept flipping their opinions. I feel that normal people would have taken things into their own hands and attempted to deal with the threat. This shows up in many places throughout history, literature and even in current day events. Jasmine was a problem that definitely felt like plot armor as it was still uncertain of how she was going to be used. Terrible handling of that section of the story as far as I can care.
Rant over, I'm hitting the transmit button on this before I find something else to dissect something else.

GameLit fantasy harem adult situations Much of the book is level grinding, which Team Jay works hard on. Less attention to detail, with inconsistent formatting issues, and more than one error that a spellcheck would have caught; probably a victim of the sequel being rushed to print.
Spoilers
Jasmine's focus on controlling others leads to a crises, even with the addition of less than a dozen from another test group. Relationship juggling also plays a big part. More happens, with the women compelled by the tainted water to think with their hormones instead of their heads. Jay capitulates with the need to comply with the alien social engineering wherein he's a prime stud to a few score women. A lot of major plot points unresolved, including the ultimate fate is Jasmine, but this is supposed to be a five-book story arc. I found Jay's marriage to Amelia an odd shift; for a book and a half the equal partnership of dungeoneering team was a bright spot and a central part of the three women who were on the team. Yet during the marriage ceremony, she gives up all that to become Kay's property.
I like the characters, I'm enjoying the back and forth with the time changes. Some grammatical errors but it's minimal. While the female characters aren't quite super in depth, they're far better than the paper cutouts that are prevalent in the genre. The smut is good. The author manages to change it up some to keep it from getting repetitive, though it could use a little more (other ways to avoid pregnancy and all). Still I really appreciate attention to women's needs as that's also sometimes lacking (at least realistically) in the genre as well. All in all there was enough story to get me hooked into reading more, that's half the battle. I'll definitely give more of the series a read.
Life goes on, on the alien craft. Still the kidnapped are unaware of Earths fate, but the ship at kidnapped them gets attacked and again they have to fight for their lives.
I found the occasional time loop jumps confusing and the crazy sex and sexual desires of all the women are insane. Jay, the MC, has to deal with 20+ horney women that he refuses to have sex with and their hormones are jacked up by the aliens, but Jay still stays away from them. The skills gained are good and bad. Just confusing at times and I couldn't keep people strait.
Somewhere along the line I discovered a corner of my reading library for there kinds of books. The first was awesome. I really enjoyed the mixture of romance with the dungeon exploration. The skill training is really unique and just as exciting to read about at the other more steamy scenes. This book vastly increased the number of girls the mc is romantically involved with but because of this the dungeon exploring was vastly reduced. Still a good book, but the balance was off.
Much like the last book I was surprised at how well written this was. Great work! My only real complaint is sentence structure in the form of commas, lists, run ons, etc.
The story continues as the hoomans (love that) gave threats both inside and out. I enjoy the brief glimpses we get from those running the experiment as it foreshadows what's coming. As for the experiment itself, Jay and his team are figuring out tons of ways to improve and also to bend the rules it seems.
It was...a lot to push through this book. The story has a cool plot and well... It just dragged. The MC just keeps being overpowered to unknown reasons, the book has a few sub plots that don't really make sense till almost the end, but you don't really care at that point. And the worse is the MC has the emotional feelings of a adolescent teenage girl. It becomes painful and so hard to put up with the constant examination of his feeling that it becomes unbearable. Hated it. Not sure there is a man ( who has ever been in company of a woman) who could stand the being around this MC for longer then 30secs!
this story for me is interesting I like the characters and the way they interact with each other and the differences that make them unique. it's a well-woven story it has adventure action it has interactions between the characters both good and bad. the main character is a real nice guy but he doubts himself in bad situations which give him more challenges to overcome. although to be frank sometimes it's a little bit annoying but all in all this is a great story would like to read what happens next.
This series is very enjoyable. The aliens have certainly Made an interesting trial If you're a male . The Litrpg aspects are awesome as are the myriad of different powers. The temporal manipulation is fun and as a new cork to the series. If anything the MC is too soft. And I'm afraid the author is gonna do the big no-no of recycling a defeated foe and bring them back more powerful or OP. However. I look forward to the next book in the series. Hopefully soon
The series is getting more interesting. It is enjoayable in a way that is somewhat shallow but fun. There doesn't seem to be a lot of debth in the beginning and kind of like lost it seems to be made up as the series continues with only the precepts of time manipulation and aliens be the overreaching story.
This sequel took the series to a whole other level. This book tops the previous one by leaps and bounds. So much happens. The story and characters were intriguing and engaging. I look forward to reading more about these characters and their further adventures. This book is definitely worth reading.
This book was even better than the first. Things have gotten even more intense for the group. I really enjoyed the depths to the characters. It really makes you feel one way or another about them which is always nice. I'm glad I started this series and I'm just hoping the next book comes out sooner than later.
I just finished this book and it is a different take on the alien abduction, dungeon crawl, harem genres. The mash up seems unlikely but works surprisingly well. The MC and supporting characters are interesting as well as their interactions. Throw in new powers, raging hormones and a bevy of hot coeds you have a guys paradise. Enjoy!
I just can't believe this author has come with such a great history in such a little time, the book is long (just as I like) and can't beet the $5. But this plot is so well done that I just couldn't stop reading for any reason and is not even let me sleep.
The second book in this series leads the MC and his cast further along in both progression of power and story plot. Relationships continue to develop and the stage set for additional characters to be added to the group. I finished this book as quickly as the first and book 3 has already been downloaded.
Its always great when the unexpected happens as the MC and his cohorts are leveling up. Never would have expected what happened to Jasmine or Mia, then there are the forlorn. Woah! Love the engaging writing as the MC has to redefine what selfish means in the context of their new reality.
Fun eeries, the meta with time travel is cool. All the random abilities are awesome. Not the most well written, but still worth the read and nowhere near the worst. Maybe not for you if you don't like harem, but when reading its easy to skip over most of it.
This is a good book. You shouldy read it. I like the story. The characters are fun. The book is a good read. i enjoyed it alot.. Download or buy it today. why not?
Being an old man, a lot of this book is hard to understand. So much of it is computer talk, or science fiction talk and I have to read around it. But it's still quite entertaining.
Second verse better than the first. A small bit of doom and gloom alleviated. Fantastic character and story progression. No one dimensional characters despite the staggering size of the cast. This author continues to impress. Highly recommended!
