She’s a journalist who always gets her story. He’s an FBI agent who’ll die to keep her safe. Their divorce is final, but a killer will ensure their future ends in flames.
When investigative journalist Arden Olsen discovers her mentor’s smoldering remains, she’s determined to expose the killer. But the FBI’s lead case agent—her ex-husband—will do whatever it takes to keep her from getting involved.
FBI Special Agent Lawson Mitchell has been burned before—by the media and by Arden. He knows she’s not going to let the story go, so as the killer escalates, keeping his ex-wife close is the only way to keep her safe.
As one of the most vengeful serial killers he’s ever hunted closes in, Lawson realizes he can’t change the past, but he can damned well show her they still have a future. If they survive.

She stabbed herself with a screwdriver.
Over the Flames is the second-chance romance of recently divorced investigative journalist Arden Olsen and FBI Special Agent (Violent Crimes Unit) Lawson Mitchell.
Nichole Severn is back with a brand-new series and the first book is as incendiary as its title!
Trigger Warning: Arson, Violence, Serial Killing
Synopsis: Arden is determined to uncover the killer who murdered her mentor and friend, Baldwin Webb. Then there is her ex-husband Lawson who has a deep distrust of journalists and who feels that she is just getting in the way of him doing his work. But what they both don’t realise is the lengths the killer will go to once they set their sights on Arden.
Review: Now, the question that arises is how someone who has barely started her career could be in the crosshairs of a serial killer? This is the first book I have read where the supposed perpetrator is caught within the first half of the book. Or are they? Caught so soon?
Well, let’s rewind a bit. Because the title itself is an indication of how suspenseful and romantic this book is. Before that, let me just share how anything with the word “fire” or “flames” always brings to my mind this cheesy and famous Shayari (made cheesy because of its Bollywood-style representation, maybe):
ye ishq nahīñ āsāñ itnā hī samajh liije ik aag kā dariyā hai aur Duub ke jaanā hai -Jigar Moradabadi
While there are many interpretations, it roughly translates to “The path of love is fraught with danger, and to truly overcome them, one has to go through them.” (Pardon my translation skills.) The literal translation is rather more interesting. “This love is not easy, just know that there’s a river of fire and (to attain that love, I/we) have to drown in it.”
I so wish I could connect this Shayari and the story in some way, but alas, the story is way better because it kept me on my toes with the suspense that it continuously oozed.
Arden and Lawson grew apart after they lost their only (young) daughter to a medical condition; they could not be there for each other and instead tried to find ways to overcome their mutual grief, although separately. But fate brought them together when Arden discovers her mentor’s remains and it is Lawson who is there to handle that case (as well as two previous cases where death seemed to have occurred in a similar manner).
From there starts their journey of growing close and drifting apart, of digging up the past, the recriminations of not being there when the other needed them the most… On the one hand, while Lawson may seem battle-hardened, he is not immune to the horrors that human nature can sometimes come up with.
And on the other hand, there’s Arden who is still new to the investigative journalism world and trying to find her footing when another wave of grief threatens to immobilize her when she sees how much of a painful death her mentor had to face.
The best thing about the story is the investigative journalism, especially the way Arden and Lawson put together the clues that make them inch closer to the murderer. Set in Vashon Island, Arden wants to prove that her mentor may not be the person he was being made out to be, all the while trying to make her ex see that she was far from the story-hungry journalists that he so disliked; where Lawson, in his own way, wants to protect his ex and does not want her to be involved in the dangers that he faces every day.
Thus starts a rollercoaster of a journey where the fire is the other starring character as it burns through it all. (Funny how I love using the rollercoaster reference when I’ve never been on one.)
Over the Flames has an interesting epilogue, where it basically introduces the series, even after our happy couple come together for eternity. The author also provides a sneak peek into the next book in the series, Into the Veins, which I daren’t read because I will not survive otherwise.
Over the Flames is the first book in the hunting grounds series and my first book of Nichole Severn, and let me tell you it did not disappoint!! I was hooked right from the start till the epilogue. Arden and Lawson are probably at the top of my favorite characters so far this year. The plot was very captivating and the suspense was top tier. Every time you think you’re finally close to figure out what happened, something else happens and you’re taken right back to the start. The tension kept me on the edge the entire time! Arden was strong, I loved how she stood her ground and never backed down from what she believed was right. Lawson is just perfect. They’ve both been through a lot and you can tell they really suffered both on their own and together. The chemistry was out of this world, and i love love love how Lawson kept calling Arden his wife even though they are obviously divorced. Both of them never lost feelings and you can see that from their actions and words, however, all relationships have their ups and downs, and I feel like they did need the two year space so they could really understand the depth of their feelings towards each other. At the end of the day, both learned from their mistakes and I really loved how both were not willing to let the other go. All in all, it was a very enjoyable and memorable read. Nichole delivered with this book, and she did a great job at that. She really did the the second chance trope justice with this. This is definitely not my last read from her! I cannot wait for Sheriff Sanders’ book. ~ ARC provided for an honest review
This book was so good! This is the first book I have read by this author, but it will not be the last. I love a suspenseful romance and this had it all. My heart broke that Arden and Lawson’s marriage fell apart after their two year old daughter died from cancer. I couldn’t even imagine the pain. Arden had begun to build a life for herself without her husband Lawson and their daughter. She was an investigative reporter and one of the best had taken her under his wing to teach her the ropes. When Arden finds her mentor and best friend dead, Lawson is the FBI who is in charge of the case. This one body is just the tip of the case. I was glad to see Lawson let Arden help him with trying to figure out who was doing the killings. There is so much going on that kept me on the edge of my seat. Just when I thought I knew who was doing everything, there was a wrench thrown in the case that I had to start figuring out the killer all over again. If you enjoy a suspenseful romance book, then I strongly encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy form NetGallery and voluntarily wrote a review.
Oh my!! The author really managed to write a great investigation with lot of twists but a deep very deep emotionnal back up and psychological background.
Since the first page we are immersed into this dark, heavy ambiance....we are feeling the hurt of the characther even before knowing the source of this hurt and how deep it goes and all the book keep us in that atmosphere and can't leave us unscathed
This is a fabulous suspense romance thriller and while we follow Lawson and his ex Arden we learn about their past but the focus stay on the investigation and it helps us to understand them better....they need to speak to each other but they tend to keep their feeling unsaid......the investigation help them to discover a new side of each other and the tension is very high.
really if the series stays of this quality it must not be missed at all and could become a tv shows it was that good really
I have loved all Nichole Severn's books and this one is no exception, what a fantastic start to a new series. Anders Olson has one focus in her life, to succeed as an investigative journalist and with the help of her friend and mentor, Baldwin Webb, she would do just that. Baldwin had seen something special in Anders, a hunger to find the truth, that was until .........FBI Special Agent Lawson Mitchel had been married to Anders, the marriage had broken down after the death of their cherished daughter, they had found their own coping mechanisms that hadn't included one another. Acton knew that Baldwin was onto something big and when he texted her to meet him at an old warehouse on Vashon Island she didn't hesitate, had he uncovered the killer of journalist, Jaqueline Day ? The sight and smell that confronted Arden left her gasping for breath, she staggered out and called the police. Enter ex husband Lawson Mitchel, the man she had tried so hard to forget, the man who wasn't there for her when she needed him. As this story unfolds the gruesome murder count grows and Lawson knows that Arden's life is in danger, Arden, the woman that he had never stopped loving, a woman he could never trust but would do anything to keep her safe. Could there ever be a second chance for Anders and Lawson ? could he ever trust a journalist again after his past experience ? could Anders ever rely on Lawson being there when she needed him ? This story is a fast paced roller coaster with fantastic, likeable characters, I loved it. I received a free copy of this book and my review is voluntary.
I finished this book a couple of days ago as I wasn't physically able to put it down from the moment I started it until I had no other choice. I'm also trying to figure out how in the hell that I missed this author's books since they're absolutely my jam all the way. Obviously that means that Nichole Severn is a new to me author, and I can honestly say, I'm now a HUGE FAN! Journalist Arden was meeting her mentor but instead she found him burned to death so of course she had to call the police. That brings FBI agent Lawson back into her life which she's not happy about. See, they were married until the worst possible tragedy split them up, and she's barely been surviving losing everything so quickly. Oh, and he's not exactly playing nice either. It ends up that they make a deal to work together to find this serial killer, and while they're at it, they may or may not finally be able to talk about that tragic past they shared. Oh, and the killer is definitely after Arden now, so when Lawson gets the wrong idea, he really made a big mistake. The twists are coming in hot, making me drop f-bombs, the action keeps gaining speed, chemistry between these two are shooting sparks, so much angst, and the race against time to catch that serial killer before it's too late. Over the Flames was a leveled up heart pounding story from the jump so don't pass on it because it's EPIC! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
Over the Flames by Nichole Severn is a romantic suspense novel that is book 1 in her Hunting Grounds series. Truth be told this was my first foray into books written by Severn and also a return after probably many years to the subgenre that is romantic suspense.
What drew me to this book initially was really the concept of the two protagonists being ex husband and wife. This book follows the story between Arden Olsen - an aspiring and ambitious investigative journalist and her exhusband, FBI agent Lawson Mitchell. The opening of the book, and the entire premise, follows Arden as she semi-recklessly tries to follow leads on the death and disappearances of her long time colleague. Understandably Lawson finds himself time and again in situations trying to tirelessly protect Arden from the killer who is still at large and together they try to solve the mysterious murder of her mentor.
Through it all, it clear to see the attraction and caring between these characters is still alive as ever even if Arden tries to ignore it. As the pair bond through the investigation they also address some of the main- and predictable -complications to their marriage. As a romantic suspense it’s a good story, I don’t think I would personally return to this genre as it’s a bit hard and I think reading it as a marriage in trouble romance is not a primary trope that this book tries to sell. Which is fine!
I have to say I am still intrigued by the second book!!
Thank you soo much Nichole and Greys Promotions for sending me an ARC copy of this book.
This is the first book I have read of Nichole's and OMG was it a book. I was literally gripped from the first page.
Arden is an investigative Journalist who is fighting to be the best in her field, she wants to prove to everyone and herself that she can be and is the best at what she does but what she doesn't realise is just how much danger she is in whilst on the hunt for more answers on a story.
Lawson is an FBI agent who is designated the lead on the killer that is on the loose. He is tall, inquisitive and seriously knows what he is doing. When he is sent to another burnt body on the small island the last thing he expects is to find his ex-wife but this only fuels his fire to find the killer and protect his ex-wife.
There are soo many layers to this story. The history Between Lawson and Arden is heartbreaking but the strength you see in both these characters is just incredible. Every time you think you have a hold on who the killer may be something else happens and completely throws you off and has you second-guessing everything.
This was one hell of an amazing read that took me on a huge journey. I could not put this book down soo much so I have read this is in less than 24 hours. Now I can not wait to read more of Nicholes work and you need to go read this now!!!!
Arden and Lawson are a recently divorced couple driven apart by the death of their only child from cancer. Arden has built a new life for herself as an investigative journalist when, after the brutal death of her mentor at the hands of a sadistic serial killer she once again crosses paths with Lawson, the FBI agent in charge of the case. Can they somehow manage to overcome the pain of the past and forge a new future together or has the murderer’s attention now focused on Arden?
I loved this book so much I could not put it down. It’s a great story of mystery, suspense, and crime which kept me turning the pages while adding just the right amount of angsty romance as Arden and Lawson fought to overcome the pain and slights of the past. The pace of the book was very quick, but it suited the intensity of the story. The level of angst and drama was on point and the twist at the end as to who the murderer was, well I did not see that coming! I loved the epilogue and the uncovering of a much wider conspiracy. It’s left me eager for the next book the series and hope I don’t have to wait too long to read it.
Over The Flames is the first book in the new Hunting Grounds series by Nichole Severn. Over The Flames is the story of Arden, an investigative journalist, and Lawson, a FBI agent and Arden’s ex husband. They are thrown together on a case when Arden discovers her mentor’s body as the latest victim in Lawson’s case. Lawson has a deep seeded mistrust of journalists and his ex wife being one has set him into uncharted territory. He still holds onto anger from their divorce but he also can’t deny something is missing and it might just very well be Arden. Arden’s whole world was turned upside 2 years prior and seeing Lawson again and dealing with her mentor’s murder isn’t good for her and walls she’s built to protect herself.
This is a slow burn (pun intended) second chance romance mixed with the mystery of solving the case. Grief and guilt tore Arden and Lawson apart the first time but can they forgive each other and move past the hurt to work together and solve the case?
Thank you @greyspromo and publishers for this eARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
This story opens with action and it never stops. I was hooked on page one. Arden and Lawson seem to have a typical hateful ex relationship on the surface but once they’re forced to spend more time together, the truth slowly comes out and their story is heartbreaking. Their life together was full of love then suddenly fell apart without warning. Teaming up on this case isn’t an enticing prospect for either of them, but neither is willing to walk away so they have to deal with one another.
The characters are realistic and relatable with an emotional backstory so the second chance aspect is gripping but the suspense plot will have you on edge. I couldn’t put this book down.
This is the 1st in a new series and this thrilling tale has me on tenterhooks throughout. Arden is an investigative journalist, who finds the smouldering remains of her mentor, and she is determined to expose the killer. Lawson is an FBI agent, as well as Arden’s ex-husband, and he is determined to keep Arden away from the investigation. Their divorce may be final and knowing that Arden will not give up on this case, he is determined to protect and keep her safe by any means necessary. As the killing escalate, Arden and Lawson spend more time together which gives them the opportunity to get all the anger and hurt in the open about their divorce, and as the truth comes out their story is truly heartbreaking. Can these two forgive each other and move on to have a 2nd chance? This is a well written story which is filled with action, emotions, danger, suspense, intrigue, evil, mystery, grief, guilt, and love. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Maybe they can work through their complicated relationship if they can stay alive and stop the serial killer . I could not put this Spectacular story down . I highly recommend taking the time to read .
Over The Flames is the first book by Nichole Severn I've read. She doesn't ease the reader into the story, she grabs the reader and pulls them in by the end of the very first page ... and doesn't let go of the reader until the end. At least that's what she did with me with Over The Flames.
Well plotted book, well written, developed characters, and suspense that doesn't stop even on the last page of the book - even though it sets up the next book in the An Enemies to lovers Romance book series. Romance? There was so much more to this book than two people falling back in love. Romance took a back seat to the suspense in this book. It was more of a minor story compared to the hunt for who was burning people up.
There were a few typographical errors, maybe 3, and those few didn't come until the last 3-4 chapters of the book.
I look forward to reading more books by Nichole Severn and being drawn hook, liner and sinker into her stories.
This story is the first book in the author’s new series. A series that has a promising future. The story centers around investigative reporter Arden Olsen and FBI agent Lawson Mitchell, her ex-husband. When Arden finds the burned body of her mentor, she is determined to find and expose the killer. Her ex, the lead in the case , wants Arden as far away as possible from the case. But knowing his ex-wife, Lawson knows he will have to keep her close in order to keep her safe. In this action packed story filled with an evil killer, feelings rekindle. Will Lawson be able to keep both of them safe? If he does, will they be able to get a second chance not only in life, but also in love? The story was engaging and the main characters likable. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Over The Flames by Nichole Severn is the first book that I've read by Nichole Severn and it was more enjoyable than I have expected. I have always been a sucker for second chance romance between divorced couple and knowing that this book serves this trope is a major win for me. This story is definitely a total page-turner that I was able to finish everything in one day. I seriously loved this story because it's very engaging, suspenseful & thrilling that kept me on the edge of my seat. Also, I just loved the chemistry & the connection between Arden and Lawson.
Overall this was an enjoyable read for me, and I think that Nichole has done a great job in delivering the story. The entire story was well developed and greatly written. I highly recommend for everyone to try out this book because it's absolutely worth it.

Over The Flames A Hunting Grounds Romantic Suspense Nichole Severn Ex’s investigative journalist Arden and FBI agent Lawson are thrust back together when murder crosses their path. This couple gave up on each other her years ago when their shared grief could not be overcome. Ex’s, enemies to lovers, close proximity and above all forgiveness are needed for survival in this romantic suspense. This story is brutal in its honest feelings. “They’d laid everything bare last night, exposing themselves to the by pieces they’d denied existed all this time, and a lightness infused her veins.” This first in a series romantic suspense novel can be read as a stand-alone novel with hea. I received an arc of this book. 4 burning stars
This book was amazing start to finish. The start to a new series by Ms. Severn, and she nailed it. I can’t wait to see what’s next. Arden Olsen is an investigative journalist and when she meets up with her colleague it turns into something something really bad. Not to mention her ex-husband FBI Special Agent Lawson Mitchell is on the case. Now they’re working together and that’s the last thing each of them want. There’s more to the case, and things holding them back. But soon things get really scary. Lawson won’t let anything happen to Arden.
Pre=order this book right now. I loved Arden and Lawson. So many twists and turns. My heart beat so fast reading this book. I couldn’t put it down.
This is a pulse pounding ride from almost the very first page and is a perfect introduction to this series

Now she has discovered the smoking remains of her mentor and giss determined to get to the bottom of his death The only problem is her ex FBI agent Lawson Mitchell is determined to keep her out of the case. Soion the danger is getting closer and Lawson will do whatever he needs to in an effort to keep her safe The only problem been his heart isn't safe as he falls for his wife once again X+Can they get a HEA this time you will have to read to see
Just when you think the book is going to come to the climax there’s more! The story has twists and turns, deep character storylines and a serial killer. There’s a long history between our main characters that tore them apart but also brought them closer together. He’s an FBI agent and she’s an investigative journalist solving the murder of her fellow colleague. I think this was Severn’s twisty-ist story yet and it’s going to be a fantastic series. This is the first of a new connected series, I say connected because the epilogue gives clues to the next. I’m always thrilled to receive an early copy and give my honest review.
I have been reading books by Nichole Severn for several years. Over the Flames is the first book in a new series, Hunting Grounds. Arden Olsen is an investigative reporter and her ex-husband, Lawson Mitchell is a FBI Special Agent. They are pulled together by the death of her mentor. Not wanting her involved but afraid that she is the next target, Lawson keeps her involved in the investigation. The twists and turns and the relationship between Arden and Lawson leads us through a suspenseful story. Once again Nichole has written a truly great book and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
Over the Flames by Nichole Severn is the first in her thrilling Hunting Grounds series. Federal agent Lawson Mitchell and journalist Arden Olsen meet again at the site of a horrific murder. The victim is a fellow journalist and someone Arden considered a mentor and friend.
As Lawson and Arden work together to uncover a killer, they’re able to work through some of the pain in their past and reignite the smoldering passion that still burns between them.
Nichole Severn’s writing is atmospheric and gripping. She balances the suspenseful plot with Arden and Lawson’s heartfelt concerns. Over the Flames is a page turner in the very best ways.
Pulse pounding tension will have you mesmerized! With the first book in her new Hunting Grounds series Nichole Severn takes her reader on a reunion of former spouses who come together in the middle of a case that is haunting them both in OVER THE FLAMES. The characters are attention grabbing, the back story is powerful and the stage is set for non-stop surprises.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful tale of danger while an underlying emotional story is playing out in the background.
Loved this start to a new series. It kept me on the edge of my seat as FBI Special Agent Lawson Mitchell and investigative journalist Arden Olsen worked not only find a killer but to piece together how their marriage had fallen apart. From the heart pounding suspense to the vulnerability both of the characters showed at times, it was definitely an emotional read. I could feel the intensity of Agent Mitchell and the tenacity of Arden, and their connection to each other. I can't wait for the next book.
Was given this book as an ARC for my honest review. Possible spoiler*** Lawson and Arden were broken by the death of their child and divorced. Two years later they are reunited during a murder investigation. Lawson is an FBI agent and Arden is a journalist who finds her mentor dead. Their past experiences have shaped them and their reactions to each other and that makes for some issues. I enjoyed getting to know them and watching them grow in their relationship. Lots of action with twists and turns.
Over the flames is the first book in the brand new series Hunting Grounds by Nichole Severn. And I absolutely loved it! It is a second chance romance for Lawson and Arden and oh boy did they deserve a second chance after what they went through! It’s a suspenseful book, great plot, and I loved the main characters. Exactly what I look for in a romantic suspense book. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book, definitely 5 stars! I received this arc from the author and this review is my honest opinion.
Lawson is with the FBI, when he is called to scene. He is surprised to see his ex wife there. Arden is a investigative journalist and is lured to the warehouse. She finds her mentor and best friend burned to a crisp. This make the third reporter set on fire. Lawson agrees to let Arden take part in the investigation, as long as she doesn’t write an article on it. Lawson was burned by a reporter before and he doesn’t trust them now. When Arden goes missing, can Lawson get to her in time?
Second chance lovers. Very suspenseful, I was totally shocked. A little heat.
If you enjoy solving a good mystery with twist and turns this is a great book for you. It’s a great start to a series and could be done as a stand-alone but if you’re like me you won’t be able to stop here, you’ll be looking forward to the next book. There was lots of suspense and history between the characters that the more you found out the more enthralled you become. I didn’t want to put the book down to go to sleep. Mystery, Suspense, Action and a good love story, if that’s what you enjoy you won’t regret reading this one!
