Mages of Mistvale #2

Sleep of Eternity

Rate this book
alternate cover edition of ASIN B08LNVRXYC

A mage who fears his magic. A vampire awoken from a century-long slumber. A foe that hides in the shadows.

Cassian

I'd been okay living the life of a hermit with just my semlee for company. But when helping my best friend find his mate led me to the town of Mistvale, I knew my days of being alone were coming to an end.

The pull I felt to the town could only be one thing. After more than a century of being alone, I might finally find my semnyar, my mate.

But what did I do when I found him buried in the basement of the house I'd just bought? Or when I realized that he was a vampire, the species that was the most susceptible to my fire, to my magic that had already taken everything from me?

Gustave

When I woke up in a strange room with my mate hovering over me, it took me a moment to remember what had happened, what had been done to me. My sire had forced me into the eternal sleep. I'd slept in 1880 and woken up almost a century and a half later.

The bright side was, I had been woken up by my mate and as long as we were together, I knew I'd be able to find my way in this strange new world.

But how did I make Cassian see that his fears were unfounded, that he'd never hurt me? How did I make him understand what being fated mates really meant?

Sleep of Eternity is a 70k words story that features a grumbly fire mage, a vampire who is strangely sunshiny, a friend who loves tricking them, an owl who fiercely protects those she considers hers and lots of fire-magic and biting.

It's the second book in the Mages of Ravenshire series. Each book in this series can be read as a standalone, but it is recommended to read them in order for the most enjoyment since characters will definitely pop into each other's books because they love meedling.

Cassian is a fire mage and best friend to Jai. We met him in the previous book A Touch of Magic. After leaving his isolation in Ravenshire to help Jai he feels the pull to remain. This can only mean one thing his mate is near. This both excites and terrifies Cass. He’s been on his own for so long but he’s worried about controlling his magic.

Fate must have a sense of humour. Cassian’s mate turns out to be a highly flammable vampire. And despite reassurances Cass still worries.

Tay is the vampire put to sleep by his maker 130 years ago. The world has changed a great deal in this time.

I loved the cover for this book and it turned out to be a nice little read. It’s another really sweet one.

3.5 stars. Cassian prefers to live alone, he’s a fire mage and it can go so wrong. He withdraws himself after his fire did the most horrible thing. He will never jeopardize someone’s life again.
After moving to a house there is a pull, a strong one. In this house he found his mate, only he’s asleep. Thankfully Cassian has friends who know what to do.

Being waken, after more than a century, by your mate is something different. The attraction is instant, now Tay has to convince his mate his fire will never hurt him.

I love stories with fated mates, here we have a grumpy mage, and a sweet positive vampire. I expected a bit more action, it was more about their bonding, discovering sexual identity and preferences, which I enjoyed very. They both have a story about their past. I loved the magic woven into this narrative.
Overall a nicely written story, spending a few hours with engaging magical characters on my couch was satisfying.

4.5 stars. Audiobook. Love is in the air! And contagious! Series of three books, different couples, all friends and very much in each others lives. Vampires, fire mages, shifters, necromancers, magic, kept hidden from the human world. Everything is love and healing and magically alright. Must be in the mood for sweetness.

I read all three in a row and by the last one, it was sweetness overload. Not in a bad way, just be in the mood for low drama, low angst, high sugar before heading into this series. I do recommend reading them somewhat close together though so you don’t forgot who is who. While not uber important, it’s nice to keep them straight.

The novellas in between were not available on audio, so I skipped them, there were a few people I didn’t know in book three, they must have had a novella, but it was no bid loss. There was one novella with a dragon shifter that I would have liked to read as one of the love interests was sort of the bad guy in book one. And by bad guy, I mean doing something to save his ailing daughter and no one getting hurt….even the bad guy was mostly made of sugar.

Do all of the books in this universe have at least one ace/demi character as a part of the main love story? Maybe if I read this installment prior to a few of the others I would've been more into it? Once I see the same pattern followed in a series, I tend to lose interest fairly quickly.

2.5 stars. Read for a group challenge and only read this one as a stand-alone. Shouldn’t have done it. The characters were sweet but I couldn’t get into the story. It felt like I’d missed out on characters and spin off characters. Think I’ve read the elf one though. Not a cameo appearance so really shouldn’t have read as a stand-alone. Given myself spoilers for the first book as well.

I liked Tay and Cass, the sunny and grumpy dynamic is always good. Not a fan of nicknames, so the sweetie thing just repelled me from the story. I liked how quickly Tay adjusted, then there was Cass fretting about labels and admittedly the serious trauma of killing his parents.

The bad guy was random. It went from normality to sudden danger. It was also a little silly. I don’t think I would’ve liked it more had I read the previous book first. Very soft fluff with a pop up bad guy. Niall’s story sounds interesting though, so may give that a go.

I'd been waiting for Cass' story ever since the woeful mage showed up in Mistvale and his story did not disappoint. The burn was slow and very mild with a story that focused on the build rather than the flame of a new relationship. The steam itself was more intimate and tender than super hot and it fit both men.

Both men were interesting on their own and while I've gotten to know and have become invested in Cass, there wasn't as much given about Gustave and thought that was a bit of a letdown. He was great as he was in the moment, but the perfunctory references to his past weren't enough for me. One other thing that didn't work as well for me is the kidnapping...and even the joking the other characters did about it after everything was resolved just didn't work to make it funny, it just highlighted even further how little creativity was used in the plot conflict. I will say though, that the rescue scene was immensely better than in the first book of the series. Tay was fantastic and both his control and his heart were wonderfully applied to the situation as it was resolved satisfactorily and quickly.

Overall this was a really, really sweet story that I think fit well with the series and for the characters. Blending all the other couples we've met thus far seamlessly worked well for adding a broad depth to the world too. With romance being the in the forefront and an all-encompassing feeling of discovery and forgiveness, this was just the story Cass and Tay deserved.

Cassian and Tay! I'm glad that Fate saw fit to give Cas his perfect mate but the big guy being a Teddy bear was to much. Don't get me wrong they were great together but soooo much crying and self doubt was over the top for me. I understand that what happened to Cas but come on!

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I really enjoyed this book. I love how even though Cass has a bada*se reputation after what happened to his parents and that he’s a fire mage, he’s a complete teddy bear. I loved the connection between him and his mate Tay. I liked that they courted each other as Tay has been in an eternal sleep since 1800 and Cass is an ace. They still find a way to be intimate with each other, without Cass having to do something he wouldn’t enjoy just for Tay’s enjoyment. Tay fully accepts Cass for who he is. I loved how when Cass was trying to find answers on how to wake up Tay from eternal sleep, he met Niall a vampire slave and as soon as he hears this he offers to get Niall out of there and threatens all the vampires with his fire. Niall becomes a little brother of sorts. I love how much April, Cass’s familiar takes to Tay and that she’s protective of him as well. For such a sweetheart I loved how fierce Tay was when Cass was kidnapped by the b*tch Catherine, Paris’s coven leader who wanted Tay but when he rejected her because he’s gay she didn’t take it well and sent a hunting party after him. Tay’s sire puts him in an eternal sleep to save his life, she wasn’t planning on leaving him asleep for so long but each time she started to go back to wake him she was followed by a hunting party. Tay, his sire Nora and Noel and Caleb go to rescue him when April leads the way to Cass. Tay uses Cass’s fire magic to incinerate her. It’s awesome. I’d recommend this book, series and author to everyone.

*4.5 After a couple of days reflection I'm adding half a star. I will explain why at the bottom*
Book 2 of Mages of Ravenshire follows Cassian, (best friend of Jai from book 1) who is a widely feared fire mage with a tragic past, and Tay a Vampire woken after a century of forced sleep in a basement.
Cassian and Tay are adorable together especially at the start where Cassian is so grumpy and Tay is a ray of sunshine and trying to adapt to modern life. He came from a time that being gay was a death sentence to where it is widely accepted.
For me personally it didn't have the magic and humour of book 1 but I did love the characters. I loved how protective they both were of each other which was amusing since Tay is a Vampire and therefore stronger than he looks. Cassian does a lot of healing emotionally and there is a lot of growth there.
I think for knowing who is who, it would be helpful to have read book 1 for sure, the side story with William and My Elf Mate (which is really cute) just because these characters appear.
Adding half a star for an aspect of the relationship which I won't spoil but was well done. Communication was key and their bond got them through any potential issues. I really liked that it was different from the "norm" whatever that is

Fire mage Cassian moves from Ravenshire to Mistvale, feels compelled to buy a certain house, finds a 100+ years old coffin buried in his basement, discovers vampire Gustave, and realize they're fated mates.

The two men forge bonds with old and new friends, who have a lot of fun introducing Gustave to the modern world. They battle old enemies, and discover whole new ways to be intimate between an asexual man and a man raised at a time where homosexuality was deeply shameful and illegal.

My favorite scene was the day they went shopping for clothes for Gustave, and he got the biggest high when Cassian told him pretty clothes were allowed for men now. A shirt with owls on it, reminding him of Cassian's familiar! Shirts with patterns! Shirts with pretty colors! A super soft hand knitted pink sweater! Eee! It was such a joy, watching this sweet, deadly little vampire having a Pretty Woman moment. He'd been berated for his "girly" clothes his whole life, and now this.

There was a lack of consistency within the story and the characters' personalities. The author spent way too much effort on crafting sex scenes ( for a character that was asexual!) instead of developing the story. Also, the author had a difficult time sticking to appropriate/authentic dialog (for a 500-year-old vampire who has been in a sleep state for 150years!) instead of contemporary speech patterns. Time was another loosely held parameter by this writer. How old were the main characters? It depended on what chapter you were reading. The author couldn't seem to keep track. I wanted to like the story, but it was poorly proofread and plot lines that were presented were easily glossed over and not given the depth they deserved. It all felt very amateurishly written. So many missed opportunities.

Fires and fears

A sweet and flowing romance that dealt with issues of fear of acceptance and past regrets to make a lovely story!

Cass stuck around in Mistvale after the first book and it turns out that is because his mate has been trapped there. Tay is a vampire who was put into the Eternal Sleep and has been left in an old house. When Cass finds Tay there is excitement, but also fear, as fire mages are deadly to vampires. Cass not only has to figure out how to wake Tay, but also figure out how to be with a mate that his magic could accidentally kill.

Dealing with his magic was a big part of the book but it wasn't the struggle that stuck out as the most fascinating. What was really interesting was Cass' struggle to have a mate with his sexuality. Cass is asexual, having no interest or desire for sex. He fears that this means he won't be able to be enough for his mate. Not to mention that classically in paranormal relationships, bonds are formed through sex. There is plenty of soft exploration from the idea of ability vs. desire, to the change in sexual interest without making it a wash of asexuality. It was a really interesting part of the story and it made the development of their relationship that bit better.

The progression was soft but more clear in this book than the first. From dealing with waking Tay to then figuring out a relationship, as well as the past coming back. It was clear that they wanted to be together but had to work through their fears and concerns from magic to how the relationship would work. Then there was the curious part about figuring Tay's past out and dealing with it when it all came to light. It was an easy flowing story and an enjoyable read.

Sleep of Eternity was the much anticipated story that takes place after Jai and Raphel's story in Mistvale. Cassian is a fire mage and Jai's best friend who traveled to Mistvale to help Jai rescue his kidnapped mate. He is getting ready to travel back to his home town when he feels a pull that indicates that his mate is somewhere in this town so he decides to stay in Mistvale. When Cassian purchases a new home and gets awakened by his familiar owl, April, he goes to the basement and digs up his mate, Gustave, who is in the eternal sleep of a vampire. Along the way, he rescues a vampire, Niall, and brings him into the family as he tries to figure out how to break the eternal sleep. Underneath that fiery tough exterior rests a cuddly, soft, and sweet teddy bear of a fire mage and the nickname Cassybear is perfect :) Tay really brings out the extra cuddliness and sweetness in Cassybear and both of them are so adorable with how thoughtful, sweet, and caring they are of their partner's feelings.

This was a really sweet and low-angst read between a grumpy fire mage and a sun-shiney vampire with some familiar faces from the previous books. It was wonderful seeing Caleb, Noel, Jai, Raphel, William, Raiden, and Camille all over again and I loved how surprised Tay was to meet each of them and figure out what they were. The Cassian's asexuality was a nice touch and I was touched with how thoughtful and sweet Tay was about that and all of Cassian's other insecurities. I loved this book so much and Cassybear and Tay are so sweet together:) I'm sp excited to read Niall's story and return to Mistvale.

Sleep of Eternity is the second book in the Mages of Ravenshire series and I recommend reading it after Touch of Magic. Not so much for a better understanding of the world the author has created for the books, but mostly because you'd see how much Cassian has grown from a reserved grump to a more sociable grouch. He was endearing when he himself noticed the differences between his life before and after moving to Mistvale, how much he welcomed the presence of his friends when previously he'd cherished his loneliness.

After waiting more than a century for his mate, Cass certainly didn't expect to find him in his newly acquired house's basement. He definitely never would have imagined his mate to be a vampire, as Cass's fire magic was most dangerous to vampires of all creatures. Cass adored Tay immediately and learned to care about him the more he got to know him, but it was hard to get over the fear of hurting the precious gift fate had offered him. Tay was indeed adorable, the lively, sunny counterpart of Cass's grumpiness. Together they were beyond cute as the worked their way through their hesitations and fears.

While there weren't many surprises in the story, I found it entertaining and sweet. Cass, Tay and their romance as main focus, but with great roles given to their friends. It was all fun, especially when the familiars showed their personalities, giving their own opinions and actively participating in their humans' lives.

Another scintillating story from Stella Rainbow!

In Touch of Magic: Urban Fantasy Gay Romance we're introduced to Jai's best friend Cassian, the broody fire mage. After a traumatic childhood incident, Cassian has decided that he will live out his eternity with only his semlee as his in person companion while having his online friendship with Jai. Plans change when Jai calls him in a panic after his boyfriend goes missing. He shows up to Mistvale to help, but when he finally tries to leave there is a mysterious pull that keeps him there.

When Tay wakes up after being forced into his eternal sleep, it is in a strange bed in a strange man's clothes. The only thing he is sure of is that he has found his mate. Now not only does he have to figure out how to adapt to the new world around him, but he also has to find a way to convince his mate that what happened in his childhood will not repeat now or in the future.

Stella Rainbow has a way of writing that pulls you in and want to be a part of the family of characters that she has built. Cassain struggles with the fear of his power getting out of control and whether or not Tay will be able to accept his asexuality. Instead of the characters avoiding each other, they show their communication and how to instill trust in each other. It was a great addition to the Mages of Ravenshire series and I am anxiously waiting for the next one.

3,5*

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-
Away-book like
‘Jesse's Smile' or ‚Joey’ from Angelique Jurd,
‘Save the kids' series from EM Leya,
‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or
'Liberty' from Seth King),
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a
WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises
(like most of Andrew Grey books and
Davidson Kings 'Haven Hart'-series)
it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few
times a year (most romances where you can
enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader,
maybe 2-3 times a year. It’s like a B

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-
reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but
it was ok). It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too
many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an
absolut NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole
line, dismissed, repeat the class

'Sleep of Eternity' (Mages of Ravenshire) (Audible)
written by Stella Rainbow, narrated by Joel Leslie

Note: originally I marked this as a DNF, which is rare for me, but decided to pick it back up and try again, as I like several of Stella Rainbow's other books.

And...because Joel Leslie is one of my favorite narrators! There's just something about the quality of his voice and his ability to speak several different dialects plus he puts a lot of emotion into it; I admire that. So it's not a narration problem, but a storyline problem.

I've read several of Stella Rainbow's books that were written later, after this part of the Mistvale saga, and liked a lot of them. But this is the first book that I've read in this earlier part of the series. It takes place before the later books (obvs); actually this is book #2, and I haven't read Book 1 yet and might pass on that...we'll see...

From comparing the quality of this earlier writing with what she's putting out now, I've noticed that her writing has improved a lot.

Storyline seemed interesting at first and
I kept trying to like this book... picking it up, but then laying it back down again after reading (listening) to another few pages, as at first I was having difficulty in staying focused on what was happening...not a lot happening except ongoing self-hating internal dialogues within Cassian's mind which got to be a bit boring after a while.
In addition: Taye nattering on and on in his mind about "does my mate like me? Does he want to be with me? Why doesn't he understand that because we're fated mates his fire can't hurt me?"
(yada, yada, yada).

The storyline fades in & out of starting to get interesting and back to mind-numbingly boring, what with Cassian's nightmares about uncontrolled flame magic, and Taye's continually trying to assuage Cass's fears of him accidently killing his mate by setting fire to him while they sleep. But Cass refused to listen to Taye who kept telling him that because they were mated Cass couldn't hurt Taye as they were part of each other now.
(more yada, yada, yada ...)

Where was the editing? Lots of typos & mistakes.

Where was the fun? Where was the snark? Where were all the interesting details about them? We get a few, but not enough for my interest, at least up to the point I had read, although later on in this storyline there were more details.

So, the MCs talked about being "fated mates" but other than the first time Taye slept with Cassian (no euphemism, they really did just sleep together, no sex, something Taye has never experienced before, since liking men in the era he previously lived in it was taboo), so there didn't seem to be much connection between them except a budding friendship.

I don't know any ACE people personally (that I am aware of anyway), so maybe this is a good representation of someone being on the ACE spectrum? (idk?)We all have differences in how we manifest our sexuality, so who's to say.
They both kept SAYING there was a connection, but it just didn't seem to fly, or all that compelling. At least at first; things did go though a change later.
And yeah, Cassian kept saying he was ACE, fretting about it over & over & over, which got boring. Still, I thought there would be, idk...more? something? So not much is happening outside of Cass's dismal internal self-hatred.

Update (March/April 2025): so now that I'm reading further, I guess there seems to be a kind of gentle connection between them, with Taye the vampire all blushing and shy as he's not used to men being so open about their sexuality. Things do get a bit more heated further along in the storyline.

Taye speaks the English language (with an accent that I can't quite figure out, but it's interesting; somehow I've forgotten where he supposedly originated, before being brought to Mistvale). But, he speaks as if he is a contemporary of these guys in this new era he has recently awakened in, instead of someone that's over 100 years older than them and from a different location. Details.
Just sayin'

(Update: the author explains this anomaly further on in the book, saying that Taye (aka, Gus) is a very fast learner, supposedly pretty quickly picking up the vernacular, the idioms & slang and many of the new changes in society.
Um...yeah, a mite too fast to be believable unless he has a Universal Translator in his brain, aka: 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'...oh wait, it was part of that ship's on-board computer operatives, yes? never mind.) Anyway, he still is quite surprised when Cass calls him "Babe", until this endearment is explained to him, and that it's not his mate actually calling him "a baby", lol.)

However, it was kinda fun watching Taye in the clothing shop for the first time, gently handling all the "pretty" clothes with admiration and longing, but then forcing himself to walk over to the "appropriate vampire attire" section of heavier materials in blacks and other dark colors. Then Cassian, who has noticed Taye's behavior, slides up next to him holding the pretty, colorful shirt that Taye was longingly looking at a few minutes ago, encouraging Taye to try it on while telling him he thought it would look good on him. Cass felt gratified when Taye favored him with his delighted sunbeam of a smile, as he glided away to try it on!

(fyi: usually, I'm not a fan of "cute" or "cozy" type storylines, with a few exceptions. This scene being an exception, lol.
This book, though, is one skirting the edges of boring oft-done tropes, more along the lines of a "traditional" hetero M/F romance novel; those are not my cup of tea).

~~~~~ 《SPOILER?》~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ending was a mixed bag of an imminent problem being solved, and a new one starting, which seems to be the set-up for the next book.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Stella's later books in this far-flung complex series are better written, imo. As are her 'Voices Out' series.

PS, I do like the cover: the guy in a plaid shirt with ginger hair & beard has modeled for other covers, so anytime I see a cover with him on it, it catches my attention and I check the book out, lol. There are not very many models that look like him (none actually); it's refreshing! See? Good marketing strategy on the part of whoever this model is!

A cute story of a fire mage who has been living as a hermit mostly because years ago he lost control of his magic and accidentally killed his parents. He came to Mistvale to help his friend Jai and realizes he is pulled to stay because his mate is there somewhere... turns out buried in his basement. He's freaked because he's happy he found his mate but vampires are particularly susceptible to fire and he fears losing control, however Gustave/Tay isn't giving up.

I enjoyed the fact that Tay had been sleeping for 140 years so his enthusiasm for all new things was cute. The reason he'd been forced to sleep and the climax... eh. But on the whole I enjoyed this. I didn't remember Raph being such a goof in his book, but maybe he's lightened up since finding Jai.

Also interesting that Cass is asexual. He's not completely sex averse but just doesn't have any desire to do more than kiss and touch, although biting seems to have a big effect. Tay is so shocked that gay couples exist and that he gets to be with a man, he's quite content to only do what Cassian wants sexually and they make it work.

So it was cute. I'm interested to real about Niall (a vamp Cass rescued) and the guy laying in his driveway.

2.5 stars rounded up. This was cute for what it was, even with the heavy topics, but by about the middle I reverted to skimming. Honestly, I would have DNF'd if I hadn't wanted to stick it out to see , but when that DID finally happen it was pretty "meh" - not in terms of WHAT happened, but the off-page nature of the summarized version of it that we're given, vs really making it more of an emotional climax. I'm not saying I needed to see the etc on page, but the way it was handled was very tell-not-show, and pretty unsatisfying tbh.

Why am I still reading this series when these earlier works of the authors are slow and a bit boring? Eh, idk... I "found" this author by reading something more recent of hers first, and since I enjoyed it, I'm willing to at least skim the rest of the previous stories for worldbuilding context, as I enjoy the improvement of her storytelling skills along the way. This one definitely dragged for me, though.

An adorable opposites -attract, slow burn paranormal romance.
I was really looking forward to reading Cassian's story after book #1 and though this book can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading this after book #1.
Once again the author's writing makes for great world building and the story follows grumpy fire mage Cassian and his uber cute owl-April discovering his fate Semnyar-the age old vampire Tay in a coffin in his new basement.
Cassbear and Tay are adorable together and though the story starts off with a sleeping beauty feels, it doesn’t take one long to fall in love with both MCs-be it Cassian’s insecurities about controlling his powers and the way Tay puts him at ease. Their flirtatious banter is lovable and their romance is very sweet and heartwarming to read.
It was also lovely to see the characters from the earlier books.
Recommend to those looking for a sweet, opposites attract, fated mates romance. Looking forward to reading Niall’s story in book #3.

This is the second book in the series, and while I don't think it's truly necessary to read book 1 for it to make sense, it does help. Overall, this is a sweet, easy read.

Cass and Tay have a sweet relationship. Cass is terrified he's going to hurt people with his powers, but Fate steps in to give him a mate he simply can't hurt. There is a bit of drama to resolve Tay's story, but it's handled quickly. I found it very interesting that Cass describes himself as ACE. It's nice to see how that plays out in their relationship. As in the first book, the animals were adorable.

I noticed a few proofreading errors, but nothing significant enough to pull me out the story. There's a minor editing issue where Tay acknowledges a couple of times that he doesn't need to breathe, but during the big fight scene he gets the breath knocked out of him and then he has to catch his breath. Again, nothing too significant.

A Little Light Romance

The characters are sympathetic, I'm just left with so many questions! And the pacing was weird.

The conflict in the story is all over the place. There's a vampire left, hidden but helpless, under the basement of a house. Why doesn't get into the story until 80% into the book. The vampire being asleep for a century or so is part of the conflict, and the mage being afraid of his magic is part of the conflict. The mage being ace is also part of the conflict.

Little thought seems to have gone into how old the characters are, and how that experience affected them and the motives of those around them. I am especially confused about the mage killing his parents after struggling for 20 years to control his magic. That situation hadn't come up before? Why did it kill his parents? Why didn't the community do anything to prevent it from happening again?

Despite its problems, I enjoyed the story.

Cassian, a reclusive mage haunted by the destructive potential of his fire magic, follows a mysterious pull to Mistvale—where he discovers his fated mate buried in the basement of his new home. Gustave, a vampire forced into eternal slumber in 1880, awakens to find Cassian at his side. While Gustave embraces their bond and the new world he's emerged into, Cassian fears his magic will harm the man destiny has given him. As shadows from both their pasts loom, and the threat of a hidden enemy grows, the two must learn to trust their connection and embrace the love that could finally set them free.

I enjoyed this story which had a beautiful tension with fragile magic, haunted memory, and the kind of love that could either heal or destroy. I loved that Cassian was asexual and that they were both happy with that. Some danger and drama due to Tay's past. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

Ace representation, great chemistry, lovely story

This is a paranormal modern romance, the second in a series, and should be read in order. However, there are a few novellas in the mistvale setting that you may wish to read before this one as those characters are featured heavily and it would be great to know the context!

This story continues within weeks of book 1 which is now causing me to question how there was enough time for the Novellas to take place but whatever! I was fascinated by this book because it features an Ace character. I thought it was written so well as a romance with a fated couple that didn’t sex up every chapter. The interaction between characters was very natural and beautiful!

Cassian is very protective of Tay as his fire mage abilities can run havoc and have been known to be destructive giving him a fearsome reputation. This focuses more on Cassian and his sexuality and how he nutures that with Tay. We did have trouble with Tay and an old acquaintance causing chaos but overall the story was rather sweet and showed how much Cassian has grown. We have some cameos by other characters from the author which I found charming, the animals also played a vital part. I adored how Tay was so intuned with what Cass was feeling and how demonstrative he was in understanding him, I really enjoyed this sweet story on learning to forgive yourself and personal growth.

Another cute and magical read in the Mistvale series. Cassian and Tay are both very interesting and likeable characters, and I enjoyed their story immensely. Cassian, especially, has experienced tragedy and is weary of his fire magic and it’s potential to hurt someone. The fear becomes even more real when he discovers and wakes up his fated mate - a sunshiny-sweet vampire who then adorably goes about trying to adapt to modern life whilst convincing his mate that he would never hurt him. These two are adorable and I felt the pacing of their romance as they learn more about each other and slowly heal together was perfect. Overall, a beautiful story!

Made For Each Other

Cassian had felt the need to remain after he'd helped Jai and Raphael, a pull ...but to what he didn't know. He found the ideal house for a fire mage, stone built so it would withstand fire should be be unable to control his magic again! He had felt the pull to the house so he felt better there but he was still confused, but it would all soon become clearer to him. Fate has found his mate.
Second book in the series and it's best to read them in order as the characters are featured heavily in each others stories. Great story, really enjoyed the latest installment.

Fire mage Cassian feels something in his heart that prevents him from going back to his life of isolation. After moving into his new home, the pull wakes him up, he follows it to the basement and he discovers that his mate is a vampire in eternal sleep. After Gustave, or Tay, is awoken he learns he was in his slumber for 130 years. Throughout the rest of the book we learn about both of their pasts and see how much they truly are fated mates. They complement each other perfectly. There were some exciting events that kept the story entertaining. And of course we can't forget the awesome animals and minor characters.

Finally, a bit of character develop and subplot!

Cassian is a fire mage with a dark past, looking to start over in Mistvale. Gustave is his fated mate, trapped in an eternal sleep. There is quite a bit of subplot surrounding Cassian's tortured past and issues with his magic that slowly unravel as the story progresses. Also why was Gustave placed in eternal sleep by his maker? Another mystery that is slowly unraveled as the book progresses. The character development in this one was good. Much better than previous books. Neither character was bland. No outrageous typos either.

A solid 3.25.
