This is getting better, I admit it ! The thing is that the feminism feels... cliché ? What I mean by that is that "I'm not gonna cry because a boy wouldn't" is that for real ? I mean, boys cry, or else some people have been lying to me. But at the same time, we love women empowerment, and I want to tell her "Keep going !" That being said, the "he sees me as his student and not as a woman" is something that I love.

However, Arte, darling, don't date Leo. If you HAVE to date someone, date Angelo. First, he is much cuter. Second, master/student relationship is not a good idea.

2020 Read #138

If you love Kaoru Mori’s works, this series is the next best choice with the details accorded to the setting, time period, culture, art, and characterization. It is really great!

In the slum, Veronica shows Arte a woman who at first looks old, but is actually young. Veroncia informs her that she used to be a high-class cortigiana just like her, but she fell in love, was distracted by it, and lost everything. She wants to impress on Arte that women cannot be distracted by love if they want to be independent; this world is cruel to women.

Later, when she goes home, she isn’t very hungry because she is thinking about all she has seen, but Leo says eating is part of work, so you should force it down, and she does. She’s determined to fulfill her dream, so she tells herself she won’t think such useless thoughts and instead focuses on work.

The next time she goes to paint Veronica’s portrait, a man is waiting there as well, and he seems to be suffering. When Arte gets called back before him, she lets Veronica know he was there waiting before her. Veronica informs her that she knows this and is making him wait on purpose. This is one of the tricks of the trade, but Arte finds this disturbing, and again, this distracts her from focusing on work.

The next time she goes to Veronica’s, the same man is waiting. She tries to talk to him, and he kinda flips out on her, asking her all sorts of questions out of his anxiety. When Art goes back to see Veronica, she asks her if it’s right to make people suffer as part of your job. Veronica tries to brush it off as not important, but Arte gets more upset, telling Veronica she didn’t think she was the type of person to do such cruel things. She ends up yelling that she doesn’t think it’s a nice thing to do at all and storms out.

When she gets back, Leo can tell something happened, but she tells him everything is fine, though when he goes to pat her head, she freaks out, saying, “Let go of me!” Arte isn’t sure what to do because she’s upset with Veronica, who is an important patron, and Leo, who is her boss.
Arte is working on putting the finishing touches on the portrait and is dreading having to face Veronica when it’s done. Meanwhile, Leo is still concerned, so he decides to go as Veronica directly. She tells him nothing happened, but he can tell she is hiding the truth. Veronica asks him what will happen if Arte continues like this, and he says she would have to quit. Veronica says, he can’t do that to her. She explains she has taken a liking to her, and Arte reminds her of herself.
Arte finally finishes with Leo’s approval. When she delivers it to Veronica, she is very pleased with the results. Arte tells her she still can’t accept that her work hurts people, but she respects her for standing on her own two feet and doing her best in her own way. Veronica laughs and says that’s okay, and that she likes that about Arte. Arte also finds out that Veronica provides for her younger brother and sister. Arte asks how long she will continue to wear that smile that she hides behind as she hurts others, and Veronica replies that it might be until the day she dies. Arte realizes that it is her resolve. As she leaves, Veronica tells her she will always be there to see her and give her advice as a friend if she needs it. It ends with Arte realizing that she never wants to hurt other people, but she does want to empower herself as Veronica has.

Then we have a side story about Arte and Angelo. We see he lives in a house full of women. He has 5 sisters, and they all depend on him for all sorts of things. He feels responsible for doing whatever they ask, and sees them in need of care and protection. But after he sees Arte in action, his ideas begin to change,

She goes to his workplace and asks to sketch their sculptures, but Angelo’s boss refuses because she’s a girl. Angelo proposes sneaking her in because he wants to help, but she wants to get in on her own. So she goes to the shop again and begins asking over and over, saying she’ll help out, etc. Finally, the boss relents and tells her that if she carries these 10 heavy bags to where they need to go, she can sketch. He does this, thinking there is no way she can do this task, but then she shocks everyone by accomplishing it. They are all amazed and have now gained a new respect for her, but when she goes to sketch, her hand cramps. He tells her she can come back when she’s feeling better and sketch then,

Later, Angelo asks her to come work there since he’s heard negative things about Leo, and that his boss would treat her right. She says no, that she likes it that Leo doesn’t treat her differently because she’s a girl, and she feels accomplished when she completes her tasks. She has given Angelo much to think about, and because of this, he begins treating his sisters differently, realizing he isn’t helping them by taking away all their difficulties.

The next story features a working-class young woman, Dacia. She is a seamstress who has been working since she was eleven to save for her own dowry because her parents can’t afford to provide one for her. She is resentful towards Arte because she is from an upper-class family.
Later, their paths cross, and Arte helps the women take on a job after their boss ran out on them. No one can read, so Arte helps them with the order, and she works with them to get the job done. They end up becoming friends through this, and in the end, Dancia is inspired to ask Arte to teach her how to read and write so she can better herself.

The next story has Leo giving Arte a chance to negotiate with a patron he doesn’t like. It seems they have a history from when Leo was a boy and first apprenticed. He didn’t think Leo could amount to anything. When Arte goes to see him, she sees he has a huge home and runs a whole area of town that is dedicated to the arts. But she gets nowhere when she tries to negotiate with him. She comes back to Leo apologetic for failing, and Leo resigns himself to having to go. But Arte decides she wants to try again, and Leo says this is good for her because to be a working artist, you need the skill of being able to sell your work. Arte realizes she needs to find her own way of dealing with this, and we see at the end she shows up at Veronica’s, I’m assuming, to ask for advice.

Lessons learned in a different time

Arte has achieved much already but things are not going to be easy for her. Through her determination and honesty she continues to affect the hearts of those around her as she strives to become an artisan in a world that thinks women should be protected but silent and not doing the work of men. This series continues to impress me as Arte learns new things and in turn teaches others as well while she does what she thinks is right. Now if only she didn't have these feelings for her master. :)

Another great volume for this series.
We definitely progress with the main story, following Arte getting used to her new life as an apprentiece and we follow her dealing with some harder tasks.

There are new characters introduced that help completing the set of characters and help developing the story.
This series seems to have a very slice of life style, so don't expect nothing too crazy happening in every single volume.

Continues to be a quick and easy read that mostly entertains. The shallow feminism message still feels clumsy and falls especially flat since Arte can overcome any obstacle easily, proving those oh-so prejudiced men wrong in the process. Yawn. It's still a fun read, but damn, a bit of nuance would be nice.

Arte is a truly feminist.

Illustrations: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Characters: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Story: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really like the way Arte is trying to become independent and a great painter when everyone is telling her she can't just because she's a woman. I like the way she always feel bad when someone says "Maybe because you're a girl, he'll listen to you" or "It's incredible that your work it's so good though you're a women" or "You should not work so hard, you're a noble girl" and Arte's respond always is: "Yes, I'm a woman but I'm a person and I'm talented, and that's the only thing that matters". She knows for sure that becoming an artist will be extremely challenging but she has no doubts she can become a master painter.

It was so beautiful when Dacia asked Arte if she could teach her how to read and write, it was truly wonderful the way Dacia want to collect more intellect and she knows she's capable of greater things!

"Arte" is a sweet but fairly simple story - original enough among mangas to keep me reading though (for now). Arte tries her best to become a professional painter but she has a long way ahead of her. She needs to learn how to be hard and stubborn in such a hostile environment and she needs to learn from the best - thus, her acquaintance with the courtesan, Veronica, will become very useful to her. I can't wait to find out what the third volume will bring.
