Dair Haslip is a young man from Garos IV who decided to join the Imperial Army. In turn, the Empire has increased their presence on the planet due to their interest in the planet's mines and they enjoy a good relationship with the local government for having stopped the Garasionan Civil War. A few days before leaving for the Imperial Academy, Dair, along with his friend Jos Mayda, were out for a walk when they were attacked by stormtroopers, who mistook them for members of the rebellion on the planet. As a consequence, José is wounded and finally dies, but Dair manages to escape by killing the imperial soldiers. Fleeing the scene, Dair meets his grandmother and confesses everything that happened, from how the imperial soldiers so ruthlessly killed his best friend to how he escaped by killing the scouts in self-defense. After finishing his story, his grandmother takes him with the other members of the local rebellion, revealing that she is also part of this resistance. Now that Dair is aware of what the Empire truly means to the galaxy, she joins the Rebellion and intends to help the cause by infiltrating the Empire. After the incident, Dair meets the adopted daughter of the Imperia Governor of Garos IV, Alex Winger, with whom he recognizes enormous potential.
A pretty good story that handles the political and personal aspects quite well. The style doesn't really make an impression and I would have appreciated the opportunity to get a bit more immersed in the settings, but I realize that's not really the point of these short stories.
