I really don’t know why but I can’t find this book on Amazon so I can’t post this review there.
It’s a shortish story quite well put together with a good twist in the tail.
Blaine is a former cop come PI. He is about to go on vacation when he gets a desperate call from a woman claiming to be in danger. They arrange to meet but when Blaine is close to the meeting point there are police everywhere. The woman who called him is dead.
Blaine calls an old pal, Wilder, who is a cop to get the lowdown and gets an introduction to the cop handling the case. She is quite hard nosed and doesn’t want Blaine interfering in her investigation even though Blaine feels he owes the deceased his efforts in finding the killer.
Nonetheless the cop and Blaine team up to pool their efforts. A video turns up making it look like Blaine is the murderer. Blaine convinces the cop it’s a set up and he is innocent. Both are nearly killed in a shooting and the cop received a minor gunshot wound.
Blaine is arrested.
Read the book to find out what happened next. It’s a decent read and has whet my appetite for more books from this author.
I enjoyed the book but... I'm probably being picky!
Chapter 6 says ".. remember what I told you about how the game of roulette is played?" When I came across the line in chapter 6, I backtracked for the expected description. Chapter 4 says "Go big or go home. ... Take a chance? Spin the wheel?" As far as I can see that's the limit of the description.
It's not really important - it just implied a greater role in the story.
ps If someone thinks I've included a spoiler, let me know and I'll hide the review.
Michael Blaine is a PI. When his next client is murdered, he must work with Detective Alicia Forrest to find the killer. This short story held a lot of potential, however I think it could have been much better if it had been fleshed out more. The protagonists are likeable however some characters didn’t seem true to their description because there wasn’t time to show enough of them.
a PI postpones his much needed vacation to meet with a woman who says she needs his help. When he gets to the meeting place, he discovers that she has been murdered. He meets with police and assists in the investigation.
A tidy little short story. Good characters that need to be fleshed out in a novel. I think this short story could have been better made in a novelette.
