Michael takes a trip to Mexico with one thing on his mind. Josie also takes a trip to Mexico with one thing on her mind. These two young people meet in a bar and they are not your usual tourist or traveller. Anyway they get talking and become involved in each other’s lives.

I found this thriller very different from the usual boy meets girl. Before I Go is very dark in places and is full of tension, all the way to the end. The character development is good and I loved how Marie got the atmosphere and impressions that visitors form when staying in Mexico. I liked how she explored the “ships that pass in the night” and “passing through” themes that holiday makers share with each other.

I found it very easy to engage with Michael and Josie as they moved around Mexico where everything was new and unexplored to them. The plot was fine and very different from run-of-the-mill thrillers. Where Before I Go really shines is the relationship that developed between Michael and Josie. This is not a tale of a glamorous romantic affair between head turning good looking people but a camaraderie often found between foreigners holidaying abroad, a shared experience.

Although Before I Go is basically a crime thriller, I prefer to consider it as a character driven novel. Michael and Josie both have a very strong purpose to be in Mexico. I was impressed with the quality of Marie’s storytelling and surprised to discover that Before I Go is her debut novel. Marie crafted a great suspense into her novel that lasted to the end. I think Before I Go is a GOOD 4 star read which demonstrates Marie has the talent to become a successful author.

A long slog

Never been so desperate to reach the end of a book. I wish I had given up. Too ridiculous for words.

A story that started with good potential became very slow and boring.
It had no emotion and did not feel like a thriller at all.The title only makes sense in the last chapter, and reading it was very tiring.
The twist about the sister (Tania) being with the cartel boss was weak. She was just a selfish and irresponsible person. Also, the ending was frustrating. Michael died just to save another man's daughter, which made me regret reading this book even more. I am very disappointed because I thought Josie would save Michael.
A very tiring read.

I couldn’t finish it. The story seemed intriguing at first but falls flat with poor character development, little backstory, and bad writing. It also seems there was little to no editing involved, since almost every page had a grammatical or spelling error and some sentences didn’t even make sense. I kept thinking maybe it was just a poorly translated books because it doesn’t read like a native English speaker wrote it, but a google search revealed the author is a native English speaker.

A good story

I enjoy mysteries and thrillers and this book did not disappoint as far as the story line went. The author needed to have someone proofread the book. There were many places where wording made no sense, spelling was incorrect and names were mixed up. It is still worth reading. You just have to overlook those things.

Lots of typos. I felt like the story was choppy. Almost like it skipped pages or something. It didn’t, but it was as if things were left out and it made me struggle to follow. I couldn’t wait for the end simply to just be able to put the book away! I should’ve just not finished it. I didn’t like the ending anyway. The editor of the book did NOT do their job well!

Great thriller

This story kept you on your toes until the end. Lots of drama and action. Shows you don't go messing around in foreign countries. Sad Michael didn't make it. Loved the twist with Josie's sister. Good read.

Quick read

I'm sure if this is your genre it will be an ok read. Not for me. Needs more development. I wanted to read outside my typical reading. I'm going back to my preferred section of the library.

Before I Go

Not bad, not great. Slightly entertaining, however, I stayed to the end to see what happened. I had already figured Tanya was alive, but not that she had done what she did.

A great read

Fast-moving. Gets and keeps your attention. Realistic characters. Not 5-star like the greatest book you ever read, but for a brief escape from reality, it's excellent.

Language

Here is a person has no better grasp of language than to flip out f-bombs as common terms. There are better authors available elsewhere.
