Rate this book

Jean Meckert was a key figure in twentieth-century French literature, bridging populist novels and detective fiction. Know for his birth name for the books published in "Collection Blanche" by Gallimard Editions, for his pulp fiction works and noir detective novels he used several pen names such as Jean Amila, John Amila, Édouard, Edmond, Guy Duret, Albert Duvivier, Mariodile and Marcel Pivert. He also wrote theatre and screen plays. His work transpires a libertarian sensibility.

Another excellent book by Meckert. The story revolves around the trial of Elsa Lundenstein, who administered a lethal dose of morphine to her boss and lover, Maurice Vaudrémont, who was was dying of cancer. Elsa had promised Maurice to help him go before his sufferings became unbearable, but after the fact she confided in Maurice's sister Nicole, who told her parents. We learn about Elsa little by little just as we get to know the various members of the jury, who all have problems and sometimes murderous impulses of their own. Convinced that his wife is cheating on him, farmer Evariste Malingré wants revenge on all women. Playboy Gilbert de Montesson similarly lets his sexist views of women dominate his thinking about the case, and former officer Théodore Andrieux is all about bringing back the good old days. Printer Jean-Luc Flavier is torn between his Catholic faith and his desire to see his psychopathic young son disappear from his life altogether. Bartender Félix uses his role at the trial to try and impress the stuffy bourgeois parents of his girlfriend Lulu. Michel Caudron would like to start a flirtation with fellow juror Marceline Micoulin, who tosses him over for a younger man, who turns out to be Elsa's other lover. Like "Nous sommes tous des assassins", this book was written to debunk prevalent notions against the death penalty. Obviously, it also tackles the still debated issue of euthanasia. Such material could easily yield a turgid and didactic book, but Meckert, who became one of France's most successful authors of thrillers under a pseudonym, knows exactly how to write a page-turner.
