But that’s all in the past. I put my unrequited crush on Zach, my best friend’s grumpy brother, behind me years ago. My ex-fiancé, the jerk who left me at the altar, is also in my emotional rearview. Now, I’m focusing on my career. I don’t have time for romance.
Then my ex shows up and everything changes.
Zach comes to my defense in a big way, pretending to be my boyfriend. Then he suggests we keep up our mutually beneficial fake relationship for a few more months.
And it’s not long before I realize my crush on Zach might not be as over as I’d hoped.
It might not be as unrequited as I’d thought, either.
But as much as I’d love to trust him, to give him a second chance, I’m not sure I can. I gave him my heart once and he broke it.
This time, I’m afraid trust might be a luxury I can’t afford.
Broody Nerd, part of Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward's Cocky Hero world, is a light-hearted, contemporary romance standalone featuring plenty of mutual pining, a strong, curvy heroine, and a slightly nerdy, growly hero. Happily ever after guaranteed…along with a slow-burn romance.
Autumn enjoys writing angsty romance, featuring flawed and quirky characters and hard-won happy ever afters. When she’s not working as a nurse assistant, you’ll find her behind keyboard writing stories, or curled up on the couch with a book. Her work has been featured in USA Today’s Happy Ever After. She lives with her two children and one fur baby, enjoys good wine and binge-watching TV shows whenever she can.
Gah! It’s wonderful to have Autumn Grey return with a fabulous romantic story!
“Broody Nerd” is a story that not only warmed my heart but also left me utterly enchanted. Autumn Grey’s tale flawlessly blends the elements of a slow-burn romance with friends-to-lovers, all set against the backdrop of NYC. But what truly makes this story special is the dynamic between Chloe and Zach, who just happens to be her best friend's brother-the one we've all secretly wished for.
From the very first page, I was captivated by the unique charm of our heroine, Chloe. She’s smart, funny, and true to herself. Zach, the grumpy computer geek, stole my heart right from the start. His brooding exterior hides a heart of gold, and a protectiveness that’s swoon worthy. I love both their quirks, and the simmering tension that underscores their relationship.
The slow burn aspect of the romance is executed to perfection, with each interaction between Zach and Chloe crackling with chemistry. It's a testament to Autumn Grey’s skill that they can maintain this delicious tension throughout the story without ever making it feel rushed.
For those who have read and enjoyed Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward’s “Stuck-Up Suit,” you’re in for a treat. Two unforgettable characters from that story make a special appearance.
“Broody Nerd” is the perfect blend of heart and humor. All beautifully wrapped in a slow burn romance that left a huge smile on my face.
Welcome back Autumn Grey!! Oh, how I have missed your writing and your stories.
Broody Nerd is exactly what you get in this book.
Zach is Chloe's best friend older brother. And also the first guy to break her heart. But he's also been there to support her through other difficult times.
Broody Nerd is a slow burn, best friend's brother romance and I am here for it.
I thoroughly enjoyed how this story played out. It was very real and authentic and just made me love them both so much.
The only reason this isn't 5 stars is I wanted more of them after everything happened. Plus there's one particular part of Chloe's job that was very important to her & once she achieved that (read to find out), it was sort of took a backseat. I felt it should've stayed revelant through the end.
Overall, I loved this book and I'm excited to read more from her.
The book started off pretty strong and I really liked Zach and Chloe. I'm always a fan of pining and this was off the charts (especially on Zach's end). Some of my favorite tropes were featured like: grumpy + sunshine, forced proximity, fake dating, childhood friends to lovers, & best friend's brother. Sadly things stalled in the middle and the reasons they couldn't be together felt sillier and more annoying. It was hard to believe that both of them would cling to things said and promised when they were teens/10 years ago. I can understand why they might have been hesitant at first, but it truly didn't make sense that they couldn't move on from the past. Especially since it was so clear in the present how they felt about each other. Kate's possible reaction was played up so much and then it was just settled and done. So much of the back and forth could have been avoided if Chloe and Zach would have just talked to each other. I also would have liked if the epilogue was further down the road, but I'm interested to see if a book for Kate and Levi is in the works.
Note: This is part of Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward's Cocky Hero world and can be read as a standalone, but there are nods to characters from the author's other books.
CW: fat/body shaming, death of parents (past), grief, OCD, panic attacks, anxiety, cheating ex/left at the alter
Chloe is off limits, she is Zach’s little sister’s best friend, and he promised his sister not to get involved with any of her friends again. But Chloe has had a crush on him since she was sixteen, and now he will pretend to be her boyfriend… Zach is not your ordinary nerd, he is this broody guy, dresses in jeans, boots and flannels with a body to swoon over. Chloe is a curvy woman, still a bit insecure after the act her ex-fiance pulled on her on their wedding day. In her career she is a strong and fierce woman, but in her personal life, she has many doubts. But with Zach she gets more confidence and things don’t feel as fake as they should be. I really loved this book, the chemistry is there from the start, but both are focusing on other things. But they have no problem convincing everyone around them while playing this charade.
I really really missed Autumn Grey’s witting. I’m so glad she’s back!!
Chloe is Zach’s little sister’s best friends. Which means she’s off-limits. But when he pretends to be her boyfriend will that stop him?
Chloe and Zach have such great chemistry. They really were meant to be together. Their story is fun and funny and well-written. It’s a slow burn with great banter. The pacing is great and I fell in love with the characters.
This is my first read by Autumn Grey and she has MASTERED the slow burn with this book. I was drawn in immediately by the end of the first chapter. During the first conversation between Zach and Chloe the reader is made aware of their chemistry. Their banter is some of the best that I've ever read. The characters are not perfect but have flaws and that makes them relatable. This story combines family, love, friendship, waiting and desire so beautifully. I couldn't flip the pages of my Kindle fast enough. This is a must read!
Autumn Grey is back and better than ever with Broody Nerd. A book many years in the making, this storyline lit my heart up with the wonderful romance between Chloe and Zach. These two have been dancing around each other for 10 years, avoiding what was obvious between them after a disastrous kiss when each was 16 and 18, respectively. Since then, they have had an interesting friendship whereas Zach had taken on the role of 'big brother' almost too well at times especially after Chloe was left at the altar 5 years prior. Considering his sister Kate is Chloe's best friend, let's just say there was always a 'do not touch' kind of warning but thankfully that didn't keep away the feelings each had for the other.
Let me start with Zach. Oh, that man. The way he cares for those he loves and make no mistake about it: he loves Chloe with all his heart and soul. Never wanting to rock the boat with Kate, I just adored him and how he was there for Chloe no matter what. How he slowly came to realize that he would do anything to make her his and getting to witness his loss of control especially one night in a tent was worth all the agony he endured.
With Chloe, she was a powerhouse all her own, working long and hard to be promoted and yet always making time for Kate while she went through her pregnancy and trying her hardest to be the good daughter to sometimes difficult divorced parents. And the way she handles her ex-fiancee was freaking fabulous. She's a heroine I could see being besties with and trust me, that doesn't happen all that often for me.
The story moves at a good pace, misunderstandings where true feelings are concerned the main obstacle keeping Zach and Chloe apart. That misguided kiss all those years ago set the stage for neither one wanting to even think of trying that again, yet these two have a chemistry they couldn't quite deny and no one was happier to see them finally take that step towards a forever than this girl!
Broody Nerd is a perfect beach read and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment with this great crew of characters. It's low angst for the most part but has a few intense scenes that kept everyone on their toes. Not to mention great humor and that huge heart of Zach's that made this broody nerd one unforgettably sexy af man.
ARC Review of Broody Nerd by Autumn Grey * * * * * When that long suffered crush finally gets its chance to shine and possibly get in with a shot! A little sister's best friend/best friend's older brother, fake relationship romance!
Chloe is in a bit of a pickle. Her mother is setting her up with any available man - body shamers and arrogant pains. Her father is over protective - especially after what happened last time. Her boss wants to set her up with his own son - gross. Her ex-fiance who left her at the alter is back and going to be hanging around with his clueless new hot thang - what the hell my man? When half the trouble is is one room on top of a little white lie, the best thing to happen was her mate Zach stepping in to save her by pretending to be her boyfriend. If only pretending was so easy, as they are now lying to almost everyone! Family gatherings, work outings, just general handsy play at work...it's all just getting very complicated. It is also perfect as now Zach may get his shot in fixing what he screwed up years ago and show Chloe how he really feels!
An enjoyable read with tons of complications, you snappy b*tches, creepy guys, and one massive lie that leads to some entertainment. Completely relate to Zach with his grumpy attitude, need for snacks, terrible issues with panic episodes and really just not wanting to socialise. Chloe, darling, I hurt for you and what happened, but thank that idiot for being stupid and giving you the chance to get someone better!
Autumn Grey knows how to write some slooooow burn and let me just tell you...I enjoyed every minute of it.
Chloe has crushed on her best friend's brother, Zach, for the better part of ten years. He was the first guy to break her heart. The second guy was her fiance who left her at the altar 3 years ago. Now, she keeps her heart guarded, her insecurities and fear of rejection making it difficult for her to give love another try. Focusing fully on her career, Chloe is on the right track until her ex shows back up and Zach steps up to her defense and pretends to be her boyfriend. She soon realizes that maybe it's not all pretend and maybe she's not the only one who feels that way.
Not only is this story the perfect slow burn, Zach is also the perfect grumpy, adorably awkward, possessive alpha hero. I absolutely loved him. He's growly, protective and oh so sweet. I loved the chemistry between him and Chloe as well as the relationship that they both have with Zach's sister/Chloe's best friend Kate. This story isn't overly angsty although these characters do have to work a bit to get to their HEA. There were plenty of scenes that made me smile and swoon, some heartfelt moments that nearly brought the tears, and some of the best build up to the steam that I've read in awhile.
Now, my only request is that we get Kate's story next. It's one that I definitely want--scratch that--NEED.
While I’ve read several romances in the Cocky Heroes Club, this is my first story from this gifted wordsmith and it definitely will not be the last. I adored everything about this one and I desperately need more words from Ms. Grey.
Chloe Morgan and Zachary Hale have known each other for years because his sister is best friends with Chloe. He happens to be working on a security issue at the company where Chloe works. When her horrible ex who left Chloe at the alter starts working there, Zach jumps in to act as Chloe's boyfriend. It’s actually convenient for both of them because in addition to keeping the ex away, it gets both of their families off their backs. No more painful first-date setups.
But here's the thing. Chloe sees Zach, I mean really sees him. She understands him in ways no one else ever has, and that's worth everything. These two are so perfect for each other, and I’m glad they had the fake dating thing to show them.
Oh my heart y'all, I love this one so much! Zach is the perfect book boyfriend, and I love how he a Chloe connect on a deeper level. I was sad to see this end because I wasn’t nearly ready to let them go. Charming, heartfelt, funny, and steamy, this will be one of your favorite romances this year. I have no doubt you'll fall in love with these characters as much as I did, so make sure you don’t miss it.
ARC BOOK REVIEW: BROODY NERD BY AUTUMN GREY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
◾️Is it possible that I’m not as attractive as I think I am◾️
“Broody Nerd” is on the slower side of a slow burn if that is your thing. It’s that “will they” or “won’t they” tug-of-war bit. Chloe has had a crush on Zach, her best friend’s brother, for years. When she made her move ten years ago, Zach rejected her and told her she wasn’t his type. He didn’t believe a beautiful girl like Chloe would want to be with him. Zach has OCD and shows little to no emotions most times. They remained friends even when Chloe broke up with her fiancé when he left her at the altar.
When the opportunity arises for Zach to pose as Chloe’s fake boyfriend, it’s awkward, scary, and confusing to them. They still harbor feelings for each other that they have never revealed.
I loved Zach’s character. He was sweet and protective of Chloe. The banter between the two was on point. The fact that he sounded like Batman at times was hot. He was perfect. The slow burn was quite torturous, but that’s a “me” problem. I am not a slow-burn girlie. When they did finally do the dirty, it was sweet and spicy. But there could have been more of that. I enjoyed the story and am curious about the other characters mentioned, Levi and Zach’s sister Kate.
I received a copy of this book for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Best Friends brother troupe, yes please! Loved this one in the Cocky Hero Club as it has been a while since I have visited this world. Chloe and Zach have known each other for 10 years but with a promise to his sister after a mess was made, he was not supposed to date her friends. Well Chloe was different to him, but he kept his distance and shut her down. Well after being left at the altar, he was her saving grace but still kept his feelings for her locked up.
Now the time comes for him to be her fake boyfriend because her mother is trying to set her up on dates that are failures because she wants to keep working on her career and they just don't fit in her 5-year plan. Well with her ex-fiancée coming back into the picture, she needs to prove she has moved on. Being in the right place at the right time put them both on a path that they both had hoped for in the past, but can she get over his previous rejection?
I loved this story but at times did have a little difficulty moving forward but that could have been my own issues as I did enjoy their story. I will have to check out some more from this world when time permits as I have read a couple of them in the past.
Autumn Grey writing in the Cocky Hero Club? Yes please and thank you!
I loved the way Zach stepped up and in to help Chloe when her jerk of an ex gets thrust back into her life. It didn't help that he was her teenage crush and best friend's brother. But desperate times and all that. What she wasn't expecting was for her fakelationship to turn into real feelings for them both.
There was no denying the chemistry between these two. And I loved the flirty, witty banter. Just how easy it was for them to slip into this new phase of knowing each other. And Zach's protective side where the sleazy ex was concerned was just the cherry on top (I mean it, her ex is the worst). Now, all they had to do was get Kate (Zach's sister) on board with their happy news....
From start to finish Broody Nerd was easy and fun to read. Chloe and Zach's friends to lovers, with just a touch of the forbidden was low-ish on drama and high on heart. Fingers crossed we get Kate's story sometime in the future.
This is a fun read. It is a friends-to-lovers story and flowed along nicely with great characters and a really good storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed a bit of escapism with this easy-to-read romance.
The characters are well-written and easy to like. I really liked Chloe and her best friend Kate. They were fun and easy to connect with. They had their hang-ups, which were pretty much the same as most women. There was nothing overly dramatic about them, which made a change, to be honest. Luke is lovely, so sweet and caring, even if he is a little OCD at times. I certainly wouldn’t call him a broody nerd myself. I can see there will be other books to come about the rest of these two’s friends…well, I hope so!
If you are looking for a fun, easy-to-read romance with a little bit of hot sex in it, then you will enjoy this story.
I am so happy to be reading the lovely and talented Autumn's work again. This is a fake romance that has been in the making for years as these friends decide that they are now one another's fake partner. Chloe is Zach's sister best friend, and they may have once tried a first kiss in their teens Chloe was left feeling like he didn't want her, she couldn't be more wrong. They now as adults find themselves working in the same company and Zach is even more growly than he was as a teen, but Chloe always knows the words to sooth the savage beast, lol. Broody Nerd is sweet, funny, Chloe and Zach have great witty smart banter and wonderful chemistry. Zach has made it his mission to go above and beyond for those people that he cares about and loves. Chloe is very high on that list and when she was left at the alter several years ago that made him even more of a watch dog on her. When Chloe's ex resurfaces at their place of work. The Big Broody Quiet Zach is about to go all protective on her. Loved this couple! ~~Michele McMullen~~
I believe this was the first book I've read by this author. I haven't read many entries into the so-called "Hero Club" but it's by far the best of them that I have read. It kept me interested and I finished it in one sitting, which seems like awhile since I've done that lately.
Was it perfect? Not quite. (4-4.5 range) But it's an enjoyable read. So much so, I'm going to check out more by this author.
If you've read any other reviews, you know I tend to like the fake dating trope. I also tend to dislike the descriptors like "grumpy/sunshine" and various others. I wouldn't necessarily describe Chloe as "sunshine" but hey, whatever works.
There seems to be some groundwork for some other characters' stories. I'll most likely read them.
Would I read again? Yes, especially if there are more entries with the other characters, to refresh.
I am so happy to have the Cocky Hero Club books back in my life!!! And Broody Nerd was certainly worth the wait!! I totally fell in love with Zach and Chloe and the history they share. Chloe is best friends with Zach's sister Kate and Zach has always been there anytime either one needed anything. So when they decide to continue this hairbrained "fake" relationship to get members of both families off their backs, in the end how fake is it really??? I was so sad when I finished this book cause I wanted it to keep going, and I am really hoping that Kate and others get their own stories cause I would love to see, and read about them!! I am so recommending this book, and think that you will enjoy it as much as I did
This is the perfect gem of a story for the holidays. Chloe is feisty and strong, and she has had a crush on her best friends broody, growly, and grumpy brother Zach for years. When Chloe is left at the altar by her ex-fiancé, she is determined to focus on her career, but when he shows back up in her life, Zach proposes a fake relationship which is a mutually beneficial arrangement to keep both of their families off their backs. This is a well written story which has undeniable chemistry, family, friendships, tad angst, insecurities, romance, emotions, misunderstanding, and love, which leads to an entertaining and compelling page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
4.5 Stars I love myself a nerdy hero, but add in a broody one even better. Plus you have grumpy/sunshine and best friend's brother tropes. I had a feeling this book was going to be good, but not prepared for how good. They go into a fake relationship to help Chloe with her ex, but each of them secretly have all too real feelings for one another. That spells disaster for this fake dating set up. I really loved the sense of humor in this book. It just added another layer of awesomeness in my opinion. It was hard to put this book down. Chloe and Zach had me gobbling up the pages. The banter, but what really got me was how well they can read one another. They are truly a support for one another. I highly recommend this one!!
Slow burn Friends to lovers Secret crush Sister’s BFF Nerdy hero Curvy MFC Fake dating
I loved Chloe from page 1. Her comeback line to the blind date was priceless. She is curvy, confident and a lot of fun.
Everyone will love Zach. Grumpy, a little bit awkward and very protective of Chloe. He did things outside his comfort zone to make her happy. Secretly he has always been in love with her.
They each think the other is off limits. When the fake dating begins no one can tell they are not real. The feelings are there for everyone to see but Chloe and Zach. The story is sweet, sexy and fun. A lot of great banter. The characters a great and the side characters add to the story and make you want more.
Zach's younger sister's best friend Chloe is all he's ever wanted, but shouldn't have. Chloe has always wanted Zach, but he's said he wasn't interested. Years later, they've always been there for each other, especially through Chloe's heartbreak. Their friendship and angsty behavior has always teeterred on lust and romance even when working at the same company. A company decision involving Chloe's ex thrusts Zach and Chloe into an unimaginable situation, but offers them a chance. Through this chance, their friendship turns into much more. Good story building for these two characters, just enough angst, lust and steam!
Really enjoyable feel good sister best friend troupe, I love a growly Hero who doesn't say much. Chloe the heroine has been Zach sister best friend since they were kids, he's always been the quiet nerd she's more outgoing. His rejection to her has always stayed with them both, he feels he's not good enough Chloe with her insecurities about her weight. Things happened Chloe tells people Zach is her boyfriend, he's like a kid at Christmas 😂. 🐻Fake dating 🐻Loved her for a lifetime 🐻 Chemistry 🐻 Grumpy sunshine 🐻 Blushing Hero ♥️( awkward/ OCD/ very shy ) 🐻very jealous possessive Hero 🐻 Slow burn 🐻No OW drama 🐻OM drama her ex 🐻🔥🔥 Safety squad no cheating
A true Autumn Grey book…characters that you fall in love with, a story that captures your attention and you can put it down, words that being a tear to your eye one second and a laugh out loud moment the next. Zach and Chloe are perfection! This is a sister’s best friend romance that everyone is sure to love. Zach is the sweetest and Chloe has not deserved what she has had to deal with. They are both flawed in their own ways but that’s ok and they love those parts of each other the most! This is the best book in the Cocky Hero works that I’ve read other than the originals! ~Alexis💜
Oh bless my bleeding heart....Zach is everything. He is sweet, sexy and sensitive with a side of caveman. Chloe is all strength, beauty and determination. The angst and build up between him and Chloe ebbed and flowed and was beautiful to see finally unravel. When he tells her, " Get out of here before I push you against the door and own that mouth." Cue the ovary explosion! This book was pure perfection.
My heart is so full of all things Chloe and Zach. I loved their slow-burn romance, their intense chemistry, their banter, their caring and giving personalities … I loved simply everything about them! I devoured this book literally and turned the pages like a mad woman, while dreading the end at the same time because I can’t get enough of these two and am not ready to let them go!
A clear reading recommendation and much more than five stars.
This was such a fun book to read! I absolutely loved these characters and storyline. Chloe and Zach were so cute together! There was great character development including secondary characters. These characters are very relatable and I hope there are more books following these characters. This one is a great summer read and ticks a lot of boxes!
Best friends older brother Grump/sunshine Second chance Forced proximity Fake relationship
I felt like Chloe had a little of me, and yet I felt like Zach had a little of me too, so I couldn't help but root for these two. I hate that promises kept these two together, yet apart. I loved that Zach was always there for Chloe...in all the ways he could be. I loved the fake dating trope pushing the two together. I was surprised with the slowburn. The two definitely had major restrait. Then again, words and actions are hard to get past. Loved Chloe got her own HEA and on her own too.
Ever been on a blind date? Chloe just doesn't sit there and take the arrogant bastard's fat shaming but goes on the assault, "What's your dick size?" .... " You could stand to gain about seven inches."
From the beginning, the author brings humor to the party before the brooding starts with the lumberjack/IT god Zach. This was a delightful read!
