Okay, I know what you’re thinking. Tui? What kind of name is that? Is it short for something?

Nope. Among the many great things to come out of New Zealand (the Lord of the Rings movies, cats that paint, my mom) is a bird called the tui—not as well known as the kiwi, but a heck of a lot noisier!

I was born July 31 (same birthday as Harry Potter!) in Caracas, Venezuela, and lived in Asuncion, Paraguay; Miami, Florida; and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, before moving to New Jersey in high school, where I started doing theatre—mostly backstage work, because (a) it was fun, and (b) you got to hang out in the dark with cute boys. (Er, I mean . . . because it was artistically fulfilling, yes.)

I graduated from Williams College in ’98 and I currently live in Boston with my husband, my perfect new baby, and my adorable yoodle Sunshine (what’s a yoodle? A puppy that’s three-quarters poodle and one-quarter Yorkshire terrier, of course!).

Much to my parents’ relief, I abandoned my theatrical aspirations after college for the far more stable and lucrative career of fiction writing.

My first two official books were beginning readers, part of Grosset & Dunlap’s “First Friends” series for kids learning to read. MEET MO AND ELLA is tough to find now, but FUN WITH MO AND ELLA should still be out there somewhere.

My first novel for teenagers was THIS MUST BE LOVE, which retells Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream in a modern-day high school, from the POV of the two heroines, Hermia and Helena.

And now I'm writing in a new project called SEEKERS! It's a children's book series that I'm writing with Erin Hunter. Check out my blog to find out more!

I really like this idea! I've seen a lot of similar help available online -- assistance for writers who are just starting out and need help developing their stories -- but this is the first time I've seen it offered to kids in a printed book form. I really liked the end of the book the most, where it allows you to write a scene in both novel-form and graphic novel-form, and compare which of the two is more effective for the story you're trying to tell.

Also the Character Creator page included a line for character pronouns, which I felt was really forward-thinking and shows that the people creating this book understand the demographic it's aimed at. Bravo!

Cute read! I don't know if I can truly mark it as read considering I didn't do any of the activities in it... but drawing or writing in a book always feels so wrong to me! Then again, that's the very purpose of the book... agh. Might use it in planning out one of my many dragon-related stories - either way, I'm just happy to add to my WoF book collection!

I just like to play around and be weird. Mirage and his friends are the dragons I created with this, and i made Snoopyclay, the dragon of scavengers. As you can see, mirage is a sandwing who goes to jade mountain. The special new continent I made is called flurga, and the reason no dragons can find it is because it teleports to a different location every thirty minutes. I Also created a mysterious island called “the White Island.” It is named that because of the white sand, white palm trees, and just about white everything. And then, I will finally introduce to you, the original inhabitants of flurga. At first, it was rainwings, sandwings, “moon wings”, and “fire wings”. But eventually, a sandwing and a moonwing had eggs together and out hatched sunwings. (Hey, kinda like how hivewings came from a nightwing and a silk wing.) sunwings are very, very big.

I finally can say I've officially read all the WoF books—even if this one isn't really a reading book per say. I didn't actually fill out any of the activities (it was a library book, I'm not a monster) but I think this is a pretty innocent addition to the series.

Considering the WoF fandom is primarily middle grade kids who tend to be into writing and art, I can imagine a lot of them really benefited from this. After all, my first big story I ever wrote as a kid was a Wings of Fire fanfiction! The advice Tui gives is really bare bones, and a little vague but it's a good starting place for young fans. I was bored with most of it, but I can appreciate the intent and purpose. Hope this book helps the future artists and storytellers of tomorrow!

This book, written by the author of Wings of Fire book series, guides the reader into the world of writing and drawing graphic novels. It is an extensive guide with tips from everything from the story's plot to designing the cover. A good and recommended read for those who like to write short stories, novels or graphic novels.

Do you love to read and write? Or draw? Well this book is for you! I personally love the Wings of Fire series and I was thrilled to find I could craft my own stories like it! This book includes four different sections: story sparks, dragon hatchings, worldbuilding and flying starts.

This book is a must-read!

5 stars because of how ecstatic my son is about it. We'll see how long that lasts. He's been sucked into it for the full unscheduled three hours he's had since I brought it home. I love that he's unleashing his creativity into it.

Great, though I expected more from the art. (But don't get me wrong, it's still awesome!)

Read for a comic-book project (really). For an elementary- MG audience. Good workbook style example. No idea how it fits with Wings of Fire series.

I love this activity book! I created my own dragon named Springe, wrote a graphic novel, and created my dragon's family tree! This book is great for people who have just finished Wings of Fire.

A rare non fiction read from me. No extra lore from the main series, but plenty of existing visual tidbits from the graphic novels and some excerpts from the novels, all with the intent to inspire the next generation to write or draw with a fantasy perspective and a focus on dragons. A great resource for budding writers.
