“I’m not proud of my past but I am proud I survived it.”

A tale about love and family secrets, where characters are not what they seem and loyalties will be put to test. More complex and serious than I usually go for, A Rogue to Ruin is a solid historical romance if you enjoy a bit of drama and lovely characters.

Anne and Rafe meet by chance outside a bookshop. Anne is a lady and Rafe is a commoner, but their different backgrounds don’t prevent them from becoming friends.

“Where is your chaperone?”

“I don’t need one.” She leaned toward him and lowered her voice. “You see, I’ve a bodyguard instead.”

They don’t know each other's names, yet every week they meet at the same spot.
Until one day, Anne doesn’t show.

Rafe convinces himself it’s for the best, they couldn’t be together after all.
He can’t believe it when, months later, while trying to discover the truth of his origins, their paths cross again.
Will they be able to stay away for each other? Or is it a chance they could finally be together?

I always enjoy kind characters. Both Anne and Rafe are generous, lovely and caring. They truly deserved each other. Their love is simple and pure, but it would have to overcome a lot of obstacles to finally triumph.

One of my favourite features in this book was that Rafe owned a bookshop and he provided orphans housing and employment there. I love children in books so, even though they only appear in a couple of scenes, I still fell for them. They tried to leave Anne and Rafe alone and spied on them, so if they kissed they would have to marry. It was so adorable!

Charlie nodded vigorously. “Mr. Bowles needs someone to look after him the way he looks after all of us.”

My only problem with their romance is that the first part of the book, when they first meet and fall in love, felt too short for me. I would have wanted a couple more scenes of them going from friends to lovers, since it was the key of the whole story.

The rest of the story was about discovering the identity of Rafe’s parents and, once they did, they had to prove who they really were. I find it a bit slow, but I’m not a fan of family dramas, so this kind of plot was not really for me.

Overall, it was a solid romance with likeable characters and a bit of drama. It was more complex, serious and realistic than the historical romances I usually pick, but I still enjoyed it. I only wish the part where they fall in love was longer.
I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well-written historical romance with kind characters and family drama.

She took his hand between hers. “You will never suffer again. Not while I draw my breath.(...) I told you that you’re mine. I protect what’s mine.”

Anne Pemberton’s season was considered a smashing success up until her betrothed was arrested for extortion on their wedding day. Now tarnished by scandal, her thoughts are consumed with the man she spent several afternoons exploring London with before the start of the season. They never shared their true identities, but they came to know each other well and Anne can’t stop thinking about their kisses or the palpable connection they shared.

Raised a thief on the streets of East London, Rafe Blackwell has reinvented himself as Raphael Bowles, a respectable and wealthy gentleman. He’s spent most of the last several years trying to jog his memories and determine his and his sister’s true origins and now that he knows who he was truly meant to be, he’s dedicated to seeing justice served against the man who murdered his parents and stole his future and birthright. When he is brought back into Anne’s orbit, this time with a real introduction, their connection is still strong, but he’s determined to keep her at arm’s length. Rafe never wants to put himself in a position where he could be hurt again, but Anne won’t be so easily discouraged. She’s determined to save him, even from himself. She recognizes and accepts the darker side of him, but he’ll have to face it too or lose his newfound light.

I devoured this book and I absolutely loved it. This was far and away the best book of the series and I adored the odd pairing of Anne and Rafe. There is such a gap between them in terms of age and experience, but Anne is in no way left behind; she’s made of stronger stuff than anyone expected and her open-hearted ability to believe in Rafe and accept his weaknesses along with his strength was just what he needed. Without her he wouldn’t have been able to reclaim his rightful place and after being so used to being in control, he has no idea how to deal with the very out of control feelings she inspires in him. It was delightful how hard he fought and how tenacious Anne was, refusing to leave each time he tried to push her away. It was a clear attempt at self-preservation on Rafe’s part, but Anne was having none of it and was utterly patient and steadfast in the face of his reticence and fear. Eventually, of course, Rafe let down his walls for her to reveal a fierce and abiding devotion. That was oh so satisfying. I also enjoyed the appearances from past main characters and the close and accepting relationship Anne had with her sister, Jane. This story examined so many aspects of acceptance and family as Rafe and Anne both sought that stability and found it with each other after having their foundations rocked. This book ticked all my boxes, and I loved the dynamic established between Anne and Rafe.

Series: The Pretenders #3
Publication Date: 2/23/21
Number of Pages: 315

I began reading this series with some trepidation because I’m not a fan of people presenting themselves as something they are not. However, since I’ve never read anything I didn’t like from this author, I decided to give it a try. Goodness, I’m glad I did! I have thoroughly enjoyed each of the books in the series, and this one just puts the icing on the cake! It is definitely the best book of the series because – the characters are absolutely wonderful – we get a lovely, lovely wrap-up of all of the threads in the series – we see an odious villain get his just deserts – and we also get to see a vile and odious recurring character get her comeuppance. YAY!

One of the things I love about this for a series wrap-up is that the romance between Rafe and Anne is definitely front-and-center, but Selina and Harry (A Secret Surrender), Thomas and Beatrix (A Scandalous Bargain), and Jane and Anthony (A Duke Will Never Do) all have pivotal roles in the story because it is an ending for them as well. I’m not saying you have to have read those books to enjoy this story – but if you have read them, this is even more meaningful for you. The writing is excellent, the characters are fully formed and delightfully executed, and the plot – OMGoodness. We suspected much of it but weren’t sure – and then the extra that we didn’t suspect – OMGoodness.

Rafe Blackwell (Bowles) has been known by several names and professions since he and his sister, Selina, were ‘rescued’ from their home by their nanny and then their ‘uncle’. They don’t remember their parents, nor are they sure what happened to them – they were mere babes when they were rescued. With an abundant amount of determination and ambition Rafe has worked himself up through London’s criminal underworld and has now divested himself of all of those criminal assets. He is determined to now be a gentleman, respectable, and accepted by society. He’s rich enough, handsome enough – but if society learns of his background, he’ll be ruined as will his sister and her new husband. Rafe was married once to a woman he loved, but she and their unborn child were murdered. Now, he’ll never allow himself to feel that hurt again.

Anne Pemberton isn’t exactly exiled from society, but she isn’t really welcomed with open arms either. Anne was betrothed and on her wedding day, the groom was arrested for extortion right at the altar. She’s voluntarily kept herself away from social events since that time and is seriously considering declaring herself a spinster. If only she knew who ‘Lord Bodyguard’ really was… She’d met him in Hatchard’s Bookshop before she was ever betrothed and even though they met a number of times, they never exchanged names because he didn’t wish to do so. She had fallen head-over-heels for him, but when her parents made her concentrate on the season and didn’t allow her excursions to Hatchard’s anymore, she had no way to find him. He was Lord Bodyguard and she was Mrs. Dazzling. It was an enchanting time for her – until she couldn’t find him again – though she looked at every social gathering. Then, along came a man who reminded her a bit of Lord Bodyguard, so she accepted his proposal. Now, look at her – living with her married sister Jane and her husband Anthony.

Rafe and his sister Selina have begun unearthing more and more clues about their origins, but in order to validate a very important find, they need to have access to a certain country estate. Since a certain Viscount owes Rafe a favor, he heads to his home to ask him to somehow get Rafe, Selina, and Harry an invitation to visit that estate. Imagine his total shock when one of the people he sees at the Viscount’s home is Mrs. Dazzling, and she turns out to be his sister-in-law, Miss Anne Pemberton.

The action and adventure really kick off with that meeting. What an exciting adventure it is too! We have huge betrayal, murder, attempted murder, romance, scandal, secrets, danger – well, you name it and we have it. This is one of those stories you’ll read in one sitting – at least I did. I couldn’t put it down.

You will absolutely love both Rafe and Anne. Anne is pretty much an open book and has no secrets – she just views everyone and everything in the most positive light no matter how much negativity there seems to be around her. She’s a beautiful soul. Rafe has seen all the worst life has to offer and his outside is a hardened shell – but on the inside – Oh! On the inside – he’s the sweetest, most caring, loveliest man you could ask for.

I can happily recommend this book and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Will the truth unleash forces set against them ...

I do think if I loved the row previous books, I just adored this one, it has everything to grip you from page one to the end.
A tale of lost innocence and betrayal only love can cure.
From the previous book, I had an inkling about where Rafe and his sister’s chase would lead them. Not the just the whys and hows.
Rafe is a man of many layers, he did what he had to to survive, he rose himself from the gutters by not being a weak kid, he fought and won but lost too, still he also tries with his own means to help other street urchins to come out of the poverty spiral by giving them a goal. Still he can’t shake him off from the thought he is a man from the slums just better dressed.
And after three decades of knowing only loss after loss, he can not bear the idea of following once again the path of more heartaches if it comes to naught.
Anne is the obedient girl with a wild streak, she follows the rules but is happy from time to time to turn them around. Thus how she had one of her most enjoyable time scouring the streets of London with a stranger who calls to her inner self. Yet she still obeyed and tried to make up for her elder sister’s failures in the eyes of her parents, but her own attempt turned a disaster too. And while she is not sad of the outcome, she wants something else and London’s Society seems to not be able to offer her a way out.
Until a second chance encounter.

Oh my!
How awesome they were together. Anne never shies away from a challenge, she is true to herself and does not lie. She tells what she thinks and acts like she wants.
She is the one seducing Rafe, at her own pace, under his guidance, she crumbles one brick at a time the walls he built around himself. She refuses his rebuff, and digs her way to his heart, yet never breaking through with force, only extending her hand and awaiting him to reach for it.
Rafe did everything to reject her, but she stands her own and drills her path with force of kindness, sympathy, innocent seduction and trust. So he is soon a man drowning and she becomes his lifeline to a different future.
The love scenes were sensual, scorching and filled with humour, everything to make you swoon but smile too.

On his quest for truth, he is never alone, his sister and “adoptive sister” are always close by, each supporting the other.
This is more than a romance, it is a tale of love in all its forms. Love from a man to a woman, love between siblings, love between friends.

So do not deny you a great moment, and follow Rafe and Anne’s journey.

3.5 Stars because Heroes with Heterochromia Make Me Swoon.

Thanks to Darcy Burke Publishing and NetGalley for this copy. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Darcy Burke is one of those authors that I tend to really enjoy because even when she writes to a trope, it always feels a little different. I think that A Rogue To Ruin is yet another in a long list where she pulls this off. I am rather adamantly NOT a fan of the ‘lost lord/street-urchin-turned-peer’ trope because it always feels implausible, a little silly, and a little ignorant of the circumstances of nobility in the past. I also rarely enjoy the execution of this trope in general. Here? I thought it was extremely well plotted and executed in terms of how this story should unfold to make it feel more believable.

Why do I feel the need to give this a rather middling rating? Well, while I adored the character descriptions of our hero and heroine here and their meet-cute was utterly brilliant… I found the execution of their roles and relationship to be 1) suffering from an imbalance of feeling and 2) rather one-dimensional. It is all well and good to have a push and pull between the main characters, and I find nowadays (and very lately) heroines are the ones pushing heroes away. SO, I really enjoyed that Anne was totally committed from the get-go. What I took issue with was, when Rafe was… actually kind of mean to her? And a little mercurial?... it would have been interesting to see this fierce side to Anne where she stood up to him, called him out, that sort of thing. Instead, the litany of, “I will love you no matter what, and be with you however you will have me,” got tired after a while. Mainly, because Rafe from around 30-60% doesn’t show much affection beyond attraction. His internal dialogue wasn’t empathetic or interested in Anne, it was directed to his ‘brokenness’ and his grief over his first wife. As a result, I never felt Anne’s devotion melded with Rafe’s ambivalence toward her. It wasn’t until he admits to loving her, which came slightly out of left field, that I started to believe he returned her feelings and enjoyed them together. I think there was a lot of potential that is almooooost fulfilled in their relationship dynamic but slightly missed the mark. The thing that had me rooting for Rafe, even in the face of his confusion motivations and inconsistent behaviour, was honestly how handsome he was. Which sounds terrible, but I am a sucker for blonde heroes. Add in that Henry Cavill-esque heterochromia and I was like, “I don’t care what you do, you hunk.” So I guess I get why Anne just blindly commits herself to him.

No but really though, all other aspects were great. I liked the adventures Anne and Rafe went on, I liked that execution of the family dynamics. I liked the dynamic with Ludlow Mallory, the Usurping Lord Stone. It was only aspects of Rafe and Anne’s love story that fell a little flat for me. I think it would have been as simple as a slightly different inner monologue and adjusting the dialogue between the H/h and it would have been a *Chef’s Kiss*

That said, I really enjoyed this book and will happily consume any series spinoffs from this one. Lorcan (Rafe’s cousin) falling in love with an Irish beauty perhaps? That would be cool. Evil female character Deborah (Rafe’s other cousin) getting a redemption book, maybe reconnecting with her husband? Even better. And these are both stories I know Darcy Burke could deliver with aplomb.

There were some things I’d tweak, but only a little! Recommend especially if you love this trope and like lots of steam. Oulala, the steam. Many other reviewers love the MC’s dynamic so give this a go!

A Rogue to Ruin is the third and final book in Darcy Burke's The Pretenders series. Each book in the series focuses on one of three siblings.

Rafe's story has been my favorite of the siblings' stories. Partially this is due to how lovely I found the characters of Rafe and Anne to be and also because I have been waiting to see how the mystery of Selina and Rafe's parentage would unfold.

We met Anne as a secondary character in a book from Burke's previous series, The Spitfire Society, and that book ends with Anne's wedding day grinding to a halt as the groom is arrested, saving her just in time from a terrible marriage. We haven't really seen much of her since and so her situation was kind of left up in the air for us readers. And I was gald to revisit her character and discover how things would turn out for her in the aftermath of that day. I loved Anne's character, she was sweet and thoughtful and not afraid to stand up for or go after what she wants.

It is not wholly necessary to have read the first two books in the series prior to reading this book, as the backstory of the mystery is explained. Having said that however, I do think it is better to have read the series in order, but should you wish it, A Rogue to Ruin could serve as a stand-alone. I'm looking forward to reading Darcy Burke's next series and hope that, as she often does, we will get the chance to see characters from previous series again as we meet the new.

A Rogue to Ruin is the third and final book in The Pretenders trilogy by Darcy Burke. The previous books told the stories of two of three siblings and this story is the third sibling's story. You don't need to have read the other books to follow this one, but I think you will enjoy Rafe's story much more if you have read his sisters' stories.

Rafe has quite the colourful past, he's lead a criminal life in order to look after his sisters and to make himself feel secure. He is exceedingly wealthy and has now given up his illegal activities and wants to live a better life. His sisters are happily married and now he wants to focus his time on discovering all he can about their parents including their identity.

Anne Pemberton was due to marry until her betrothed was arrested before the wedding could take place. Before her betrothal, she had enjoyed a series of wonderful dates with Rafe, but they kept their identities from each other and when she had to miss one of their assignations they weren't able to find each other again. When she finally realised they wouldn't see each other again she agreed to marry somebody else, but her heart wasn't in it. She wasn't exactly devastated when the marriage didn't go ahead.

Circumstances bring Rafe and Anne into contact again and despite him wanting to fully focus on his task of finding out who his parents were, and in turn, finding out what exactly happened to them, she is equally as determined to be there for him. She doesn't know his past, and he knows if she finds out, that she won't want anything to do with him. She won't believe him when he tells her he isn't the man she believes him to be.

I have read the other books in this series and although they were both fabulous 5-star reads, Rafe's story is by far my favourite. I love how he and Anne meet and enjoyed reading about their anonymous meetings. The twists and turns, the mystery, the danger and of course the beautiful budding romance between Rafe and Anne all made me want to read this book as fast as I could. This book and this trilogy are wonderful and I am more than happy to recommend them.

This is the third book in Darcy Burke’s Pretenders series, but it’s also strongly connected with the world of her Untouchables and Spitfire Society series. Now if you’re a big fan and have read all of these, you’ll undoubtedly recognise all the recurring characters and be delighted to see them again. If you’ve only read intermittently in the series - like me - you may find yourself a little bemused by a rather large cast. Honestly, just keeping track of all the hero’s identities was quite an undertaking; Rafe Bowles, aka Rafe Blackwell, aka The Vicar, aka the long lost heir to the earldom of Stone… it was no wonder Rafe couldn’t always keep track of who knew what about him, exactly, and defaulted to not telling anyone anything unless he absolutely had to, which of course leads to major conflict with his heroine. It’s never good to keep secrets from the woman you’re planning to marry.

When her first fiancé was arrested literally at the altar on their wedding day, Anne Pemberton was left to try and pick up the pieces of a reputation shattered through no fault of her own. She really shouldn’t involve herself with a man who doesn’t seem to have a past, but she can’t seem to safeguard her heart when Rafe is around.

This is a complicated plot with intertwining families and characters who obviously got major storylines of their own in previous books heavily involved. I did enjoy it a lot and I didn’t have any significant difficulty in following along as enough detail was sketched in for me to understand the background. I was fascinated enough by both Selina and Beatrix (who got their stories in the first two books in this series) that I’ll probably pick up those books to read as well if I get the opportunity. Five stars for a great read; Darcy Burke never fails to deliver, but be prepared for an enormous cast you’ll need to expend some brainpower on keeping straight in your mind.

Discoveries!

I loved that bad boy Rafe Blackwell (Bowles) met the woman he finds irresistible in a bookstore. Anne Pemberton has suffered a setback, well really a close escape, when her fiancé turns out to be a crook, an extortionist. She was left at the altar. (Rafe was involved in this). Needless to say society places their disapproval on Anne.
Anne’s not worried. “Much to [her] parents’ horror, she’d declared herself a spinster and moved into a house in Cavendish Square owned by her friend Phoebe, who was now the Marchioness of Ripley.”
Unfortunately her godfather is worried by her declaration of independence and seems to be pushing her towards engaging in social events.
Meanwhile Rafe is hiding a secret, a tawdry background in the underbelly of London, abut how he arrived there and who he is is clouded. He has been searching for information he can only see in dreams.
As Rafe and Anne become more closely involved with each other their world is about to be shocked.
A pleasing read where secrets have power and surface impressions are not always true.

I love this series and have been waiting for Rafe's book. What I didn't expect was for him to be such a sweet guy. He warms up gradually through the series of books and in this one he just makes you melt. His relationship with Anne is very slow to move through but absolutely worth it in the end. I can't wait to see who comes out of this world next!

Anne Pemberton is in London for her first season, when she meets a handsome stranger, who she dubs Lord Bodyguard, at a book store. They spend their Thursday afternoons together, never revealing their true identities, and she soon falls in love. However, her parents are adamant she marries, especially after her sister Jane's perceived ruined reputation, and so she is betrothed to Gilbert Chamberlain. However, when he is arrested for extortion on their wedding day, she finds herself ruined, and in hiding with her sister. Anne can't stop thinking about Lord Bodyguard, and when she spots him in her brother-in-law's hallway, and discovers his true identity, Rafe Bowles (Blackwell), she won't let him slip through her fingers again. For Rafe, he has vague memories of his parents, before he and his sister, Selina, were stolen away to London at a young age. He has many identities, from the Vicar, to Blackwell, Bowles, and now perhaps the long lost heir to an Earldom? He can't believe his luck, but it appears that his uncle, the current Earl, may have had a hand in the fire that took his parents, and was meant to take him too. He wants to keep Anne at arms length, and not ruin her with his past, but it's difficult to do, and perhaps he needs her more than he could imagine? Will Rafe be able to discover the truth about his lineage, or will his past come back to haunt him?

After binging this series, I can safely say this was the perfect ending anyone could've asked for. Any and all questions you may have had previously have been answered, and then some. Rafe had intrigued me every time we saw him in the previous books, and learning what he got up to in the time he and Selina had been separated was lovely, as was seeing his softer side, and him being vulnerable with Anne. I just love stories like this, when the long lost heir is discovered, and it brought together the perfect mix of mystery and intrigue, with the added bonus of a wonderful romance, all neatly tied together with a bow. Anne and Rafe had a chemistry that was unreal - though they aren't my favourite couple of the series - and the moments we saw between them in the prologue were simply beautiful as a meet cute. There were some moments between them when I wanted to laugh, and others cry, but it was so real and natural. I'm so pleased with the conclusion, and the way all three main characters from the series get the closure they've been looking for. I can't wait for Darcy's next book!

A Rogue To Ruin. I simply had to read this love story and I am so glad that I did. I was totally blown away by the drama, the suspense and the oh steamy give to me, intimate affairs between Rafe and Anne. These two enjoyed each other’s company together a lot. Once again, I have fallen into that hopeless romantic escape pod called a historical romance novel.
I find that the drama was powerful and intense in some instances. This added to the numerous heights in the book that really brought out the cause of this being a good book. Also, it shows that the author has the talent for giving her readers a good story. All the characters were fantastic. Each character was intense, heart warming, passionate and strong.
The book reads with a lot of realism to it. I enjoyed that the book didn’t have endless jargon. The issue’s at hand was well written with clarity to the topics. I for one liked what the characters were referring to and where the story was going. My heart goes out to Rafe and Anne, more so for Rafe and Selina, his sister as to what they endured before their lives took their turn of events. I absolutely loved Anne and her saucy attitude.
She was tough, strong and she never gave up on what she truly wanted. No matter how Rafe tries, he’s unable to fight the dazzle called Anne. The love that grows between her and Rafe was a pleasure to read. Oh my, these two know how to get hot and heavy. Oh dear Deborah, what to do with you.
I’m sure Selina has a few suggestions. Until next time my fellow friends... read on!

Anne Pemberton was one of the Season’s most popular young misses until her betrothed was arrested for extortion at their wedding. Now a social pariah, she can’t help but think back to the dashing gentleman she met before the Season started when they met at a bookshop. Though they spent several afternoons exploring East London together, they never disclosed their names. They did, however, share a kiss, and Anne can’t forget it—or him. Former thief Rafe Blackwell is now a respectable gentleman with one goal: to take down the man who murdered his parents. Reunited with Anne, their attraction still blazes strong.
This is the third book in the trilogy & all questions are answered & all loose ends tied up. The first quarter of the book is a lovely story of two people meeting, they don’t exchange names but spend time together each week & begin to fall in love until the week she doesn't appear. Then from just over a quarter of the way through everything changes, there are surprises, attempted murder, intrigue & secrets, the pace quickens & I was engrossed so much that I read the rest of the book in a sitting. A well written book with strong characters. I loved Anne who always had a smile & saw the best in everyone. I also loved Rafe who was a reformed rogue but as more & more of his childhood was revealed the more I fell for him & how he'd done what he had to, to make a life for himself & Selina. I fell totally for him when he caught Annie stealing & how he dealt with it. An enthralling read which I loved

Anne Pemberton is getting used to the scandal attached to her name. Unfortunately, being previously engaged to an extortionist will do that to you. Their is a man Anne longs to see again, but sadly they did not exchange names. When their paths cross again, Anne decides that this time she isn't going to let him go.

Rafe Blackwell has had a few identities and his past is very colored. All he wants to do is discover his and his sister's true identities. He has no idea digging into his past is going to be so dangerous. He's willing to risk it all for answers, until Anne comes back into his life. What will happen when the truth comes to light?!

A ROGUE TO RUIN, book three of The Pretenders series, is one of my favorite reads of 2021. We finally get "the Vicar," Rafe Blackwell's story, and it was nice to get a glimpse back into some of the Untouchables' lives, as well as seeing Rafe's sisters again. Rafe has a challenging road ahead of him, but he is literally fearless. He and Anne's first meetings were so sweet. I loved how they became friends first, and I'm so glad they find each other once again. Expect to be up late reading A ROGUE TO RUIN.

I could not gobble this book down fast enough. All the tantalizing little hints about what was truly going on that we’d uncovered in previous volumes of the series, finally come into full light. And I was desperate to see how they’d all play out; what it would take to get the happy ever after I longed to see. It felt to me that Rafe’s story is told through moments of self-discovery. Even his relationship with Anne is about learning to love himself in spite of, possibly even because of, the choices of his past. Anne’s journey is also about discovery, but more about the people around her than herself. I loved where this story took us, and adored the way it ends. However, I hate that the series is over and I have to say “goodbye” to these characters now.

This book is different than what I am used to from Darcy, not that I didn't end up enjoying at the end but it was more serious. We have a lady who is now unpopular and she meets a commoner and they strike up an uncommon friendship (which I liked), however all is not what it seems. There are lies and secrets and the story takes of finding out who Rafe's parents are and proving it. These two fell in love really quickly, so to me they really didn't develop that well but I liked both characters so it was forgiven.

I enjoyed this story very much! What wasn’t to like, two engaging characters, romance and a mystery. Anne Pemberton, was wanting to see new places in London and after meeting Rafe, she certainly has some new experiences. There was no pretence about Anne, she said what she thought. Rafe had many secrets about his former life but was now determined to be a better person. They had a real connection but there are a number of obstacles for them to overcome. There is also the mystery of Rafe’s childhood memories, where did he come from? There was a definite sense of close family bonds with Anne and her sister Jane, and Rafe and his sister Selina and their close friend Beatrix.

When Anne Pemberton and Rafe Blackwell meet by chance at Hatchard’s bookstore and though they do not reveal their true identities and instead call each other Lord Bodyguard and Mrs. Dazzling, a friendship forms. They spend several afternoons together before Anne doesn’t show up and it would appear their time together is over. But fate isn’t done with them yet and months later when their paths cross again and they will learn how intertwined their lives really are!

Anne, who lives with her sister Jane, Viscountess Colton, stopped meeting Rafe when she became betrothed, a mistake she deeply regrets that ended badly when her groom is arrested for extortion at their wedding. Since then Anne has been laying low and is beyond shocked and elated when she encounters Rafe in her sister’s home – apparently meeting with her brother-in-law Anthony. Rafe is just as surprised to see her – he had no idea she was Anthony’s sister-in-law. He had just come to call in a favor.

Rafe Blackwell is a man with a checkered past filled with heartbreak, violence, secrets, and lies. He is a man who has reinvented himself several times over, and a man desperate to learn the truth of his actual identity. Kidnapped at a young age, Rafe doesn’t remember where he lived before a fire claimed his parents and he ended up in London, living the life of a criminal, but he knows that is not the life he was born into. When he learns of an estate that is eerily similar to his memories, he calls in a favor from a former client of his moneylending days as the “Vicar”. When he asks Anthony to get him invited to the Earl of Stone’s estate, he has no idea how much this simple request is going to change his life.

As fate would have it, Anne is the Earl of Stone’s goddaughter and she attends the same picnic at the estate as Rafe does and finds a way to get him alone – Rafe warns her again, that he is not the man she thinks he is and that they have no future together. But Anne isn’t ready to give up on Rafe, and when the party is moved into the house and the housekeeper recognizes Rafe and his sister Selina as the children of the previous Earl of Stone – she is more determined than ever to help him take his rightful place, even though it will displace her beloved godfather. At first, Rafe tries to push Anne away but soon tells himself he needs her to help him claim his birthright, all the while, he still denies any deeper feelings and instead continues to cling to the memory of his love for his late wife. With his uncle admitting that Rafe is his long-lost nephew, it seems like things will be easily cut and dried, but claiming his birthright will not be simple, and many, many dark secrets from both sides of the claim will come to light and Anne will find herself caught in the middle of two men she loves.

This was a very well-written, fast-paced, entertaining, and interesting story. To readers of the series, the mystery of what happened to Rafe and Selina is finally solved, and the how and why of the dark tale are fascinating and well laid out. Readers of The Spitfire Society and The Untouchables series will be thrilled to catch up with several former characters and will be delighted with how neatly Ms. Burke was able to incorporate so many beloved characters into this story without detracting from Anne and Rafe. The book has a lot going for it; wonderful characters, a fascinating mystery, great secondary characters, very steamy love scenes, a villain getting his comeuppance, and finally a well-deserved HEA.

I enjoyed this story, but I did have a couple of things that kept this from being a 5 star read for me, for instance, I felt that Rafe was portrayed as actively “in love” with his late wife and I don’t mean as in he loved her (past tense) and always would, but like still in love with her and unable to love Anne, I felt that this depiction was dragged out for much of the book and then BOOM – he loves Anne. And then there is Anne herself, a wonderful character, but a bit too "Pollyanna" for my taste – I liked her, but she was just a bit too “perfect” to be relatable.

Overall, this was an excellent story and I would happily recommend this book. This book is the third book in the series, but it can be read as a standalone title with no problems.

Thank you to Netgalley and Darcy Burke Publishing for this digital copy. All thoughts are my own.

Lots of questionable choices made throughout, but it was a fun read. 3/5 stars.

I've come to realize that as long as I like the characters within the story, more often than not I'll lean towards a 3 star rating even though the plot itself could be a little baffling at times. That was definitely the case for this book. I really liked Rafe and Anne. I thought they were excellent characters. I also appreciated the characters that they surrounded themselves with, their loved ones and their found family. However, I do wish that we got to see more of them as a found family.

Let's get into those questionable choices now though, because oh boy were there a lot. I wish the prologue was expanded upon more. Rafe and Anne's love story (at least the part where they meet and come to care for one another) is shoved into the opening prologue. I hate when authors do this. I want to see the relationship develop. I want to witness those burgeoning feelings of care into love. Because it was so short, it felt so much like insta-love (and to be honest there was a little bit of that going on from Anne's side). It just would've been more satisfying to see them meet again if we had that time to get to know the two of them and their love beforehand. Then, when the two finally do meet, they're basically consumed by their attraction to one another - which usually I love - but if you have your two leads have sex right after a life altering fight instead of talking things through first, I'm gonna have some issues. Other than a few gripes through, I did like Rafe and Anne separately and together.

Something else this book suffers from is lots of telling and not a lot of showing. Much of the main plot threads are told to us from side characters, which is fine... but if you're trying to give us a murder mystery, at least make the hunt for the killer compelling. This happens a lot throughout the book, which becomes incredibly frustrating to read through.

The first 30% of this book was also like a rollercoaster. I felt like I kept getting whiplash because there was new information thrown at me every few pages. Most historical romances that are part of a series can act as standalones with minor Easter eggs thrown in to reward readers who have stuck with the series, but for the most part you're not missing anything substantial if you don't read the other books. I went into this book thinking that was the case. However, this really felt like the ending of a series and I was missing all the important pieces and had to fill in the gaps myself. Just know that if you want to read this story, it'd probably be a good idea to read the first two books as well.

So overall, was the plot the best thing I have ever come across? No. But I had a good time.

Book 1 - A Secret Surrender > https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Book 2 - A Scandalous Bargain > https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The books can be read as stand alone, but you will like it a lot more if you read in the order of publication. Even because this book here brings the story of Selina's brother (book 1)

Rafe Blackwell was in London for the Season, while inspecting the library work at his home and seeking to find out who had tried to exterminate his family many years ago, through a fire.

He and his sister, Selina, survived and remained under the responsibility for years of "Uncle" Edgar, an alcoholic man who, in fact, introduced Rafe to the art of theft.
Before he died, Edgar sold the siblings to Samuel Partridge, a criminal who controlled an army of young thieves among other enterprises.
Rafe and Selina were separated for a few years, after she went to a ladies' school - for her protection.
He survived and paid for her expenses through thefts, and came to be known as the Vicar.

But now, he had a responsible name, he was rich, and he was thirsty to find out about his past.
It is at this time that he meets a lady wearing a veil, who was being harassed by two men. He decided to protect her, and even offered to be her bodyguard for as long as she remained there.
They started talking; he finds out that she was in town for Season, and that she hadn't known much in town yet. From there, anonymously (they did not say their real names), they started to meet once a week for a walk.
He as Lord Bodyguard, she as Miss Dazzling.

For two weeks they met, walked, had a snack and were more and more delighted with each other. But in the third week, Dazzling did not appear, and they did not see each other again.

Later, when Rafe was finishing up his library, Selina, now Mrs Harry Sheffield, and Beatrix (a friend of hers from school for ladies - book 2), visit him. Beatrix had a clue that could help Rafe find out who killed his parents.
And that takes him to the property of the godfather of none other than Anne Pemberton, Rafe's Miss Dazzling.

And from there the real adventure begins, secrets are revealed. More deaths can happen to hide other crimes, and the discovery not only of who Rafe and Selina's parents were, but that he and Anne would do anything to be together, once more, and forever.
The end of the story is tearful and romantic.

3.5 stars?

I honestly didn't knew this was third book in a companion series when I requested it on Netgalley. But I got caught on really quick with m the gist of everything that had happened in the previous two books.

This was such a palate cleanser book for me and I read it entirely in one sitting. The historical setting is fascinating as well and the writing is very engaging. The characters are well written and I love the relationship familial and otherwise that existed between all the characters.

Anne the society's favourite has recently suffered a scandal because of her fiance being arrested on the day of their wedding. Naturally, it hasn't gone down well for her reputation but she is also secretly relieved that the wedding got cancelled because she is in love with another man. The problem is that she doesn't know where to find him.. they had only met a few times before and they didn't share their names with each other. Enter, Rafe - The guy Anne loves. Rafe use to be an illegal moneylender but he is now trying to get his life straight. He is also trying to find the true identity of his parents and what happened to them. Anne and Rafe's path crosses again in the most unexpected ways and well romance ensues.

There are lot of familiar regency romance trope in play such as the female MC facing a scandal, the male MC being a tortured soul with a dark past, tons of parties, picnics and balls etc. But I really had a good time reading it. There's also a light mystery to the plot about Rafe's parents and that was really interesting to read. The romance too was done well in my opinion. Rafe and Anne understands each other and they try to support each other and there aren't any unnecessary drama between them. I did feel that there were a couple of times when Rafe said one thing and ended up doing something else when the two of them were in an intimate position but I am just chalking that to hormones.

Overall, a fun and breezy book to read over a weekend. I may checkout the others in the series if I am in a mood to read more regency romance.

A Rogue to Ruin by Darcy Burke
The Pretenders # 3

With Rafe’s story this trilogy ends BUT what a series and an ending this proved to be! Family, friends, intrigue, cunning, survival, enduring love and support for one another has seen Selina and her sister-of-the-heart Beatrix find their happily ever after. And, with that same support and love the two women will assist where they can as Rafe, their brother, moves forward into the life he has envisioned and also finds his future happiness with an incredible woman.

What I liked:
* Rafe: a good man who has done whatever, well almost whatever, it took to survive, thrive, and keep those he loves as safe as he can. His desire has been to become a man his father, a man he can’t remember well, would be proud of.
* Anne: smart, intrepid, engaging, outspoken, knows what she wants, suffered a scandal, and yet she is so much more. I liked her and liked her with Rafe…a WHOLE lot!
* That Selina, Beatrix and their husbands were brought into play in this book.
* Gradually finding out who the characters in this trilogy REALLY were – felt good!
* That the bad guy was exposed for what he truly was
* That one of the cousins was not a bad guy and wondering if he might show up in a future book to find his own HEA.
* The series – all of it! The characters, writing, steamy and other bits. Can’t wait to find out what this author will come up with next!

What I didn’t like:
* The person(s) I was meant not to like
* Knowing that the life of youth on the streets was as bad as or worse than those of the main characters in this trilogy.

Did I like this book? Definitely!
Will I read more by this author? Without a doubt!!

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

A Rogue to Ruin is the third in Darcy Burke’s Pretenders series, which is in turn part of her Untouchables world. It can be read as a stand-alone, although I do think understanding the connections between the characters does make the story richer. In spite of having read the books most immediately relevant to this one, I did find I had to go back and refresh myself on who everyone was, and feel that this would have been a good opportunity to include a character guide (like a cast of characters), to help new readers keep the cast straight and have a frame of reference, and readers who are familiar but may have forgotten to refresh themselves as to who everyone is, as there are so many characters across the multiple series.

However, the romance between Anne and Rafe is a beautiful one in its own right, once separated from the minor issues of navigating the large world Burke has built. It’s such a sweet premise to have them meet in the past and have that spark, and then meet again years later now that both of their lives have changed.

While the “tortured hero saved by love” trope is not a favorite, I ended up liking Rafe for the most part; as he’s a genuinely good person, in spite of the events they have embittered him. And Anne embraces him wholeheartedly with all his flaws, and their dynamic was definitely one of the more endearing depictions of this trope I’ve read.

This is another enjoyable historical romance from Darcy Burke, one I think fans of the genre will love.

A wonderful end to The Pretenders (or is it?), with characters from The Spitfire and Untouchables making guest appearances. At last Rafe and Selina find out who they really are and what happened to them. But before that, before Ann Pemberton's almost disastrous wedding to Gilbert Chamberlain, before the season began, she found solace in reading at Hatchard's, a bookshop and a friend in "Lord Bodyguard", a man who had rescued her from some obnoxious young men. To him she was Mrs Dazzling, not revealing their true identities, he escorted her to places she was never able to go and she found herself falling in love with him. But then her parents basically put her on house arrest and without knowing his identity, could not let him know that she was unable to meet him. Heartbroken, she agree to Chamberlain's proposal, but was rescued at the last minute, by his arrest. But as the woman, she is the one who is held in shame by society. Meanwhile, Rafe, Selina and Beatrix find clues to the folly that Rafe remember, which leads Rafe to being reunited with Anne. As much as he tries to push her away because of his past, she knows who she wants and is not going to be pushed. Some twists and danger, but they finally do get their HEA.

3.5 stars because historical romances with a healthy dose of drama and intrigue make me happy

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The first thing that drew me to this book was the title and the cover was a close second. After reading the description I believed I had a good idea of what to expect but boy was I wrong! This story kept me delightfully engaged and had me constantly guessing at what the outcome would be (yes, I do that).

I enjoyed Rafe and Anne's banter and the way their relationship developed over time. I loved how Anne did not allow the rules of society and/or propriety to dictate how she should behave or live her life. Anne is free-spirited and daring and challenged Rafe at every opportunity, he had no choice but to fall in love with her.

Rafe is the type of man that catches your eye because he is so beautiful to look at but ends up keeping your attention because of how beautiful his soul is. I loved how he did not try to dissuade Anne from embarking on her various adventures, rather he became her guide and bodyguard. He is hardworking, ambitious and compassionate.

I truly enjoyed the adventures of Mrs Dazzling and Lord Bodyguard

This was an interesting read, and I’m looking forward to reading more by Darcy Burke in the future. I think the challenge will just be figuring out where to start since there’s a lot of cross-series overlap, or at least I interpreted such from the endless name dropping of no fewer than five couples from other books.

While reading this, I felt like I was at a networking event trying desperately to remember everyone’s names and connections to each other. It’s possible to start with this third book in a trilogy like I did, but I’d assume it would be a smoother ride for those who begin at the beginning.

That said, there was an interesting mystery that formed the center of the plot’s conflict. If you prefer your historical romances to be more historically accurate, this may be the book for you. Language, clothing, and details like hiring hermits to live on your land and lend it a romantic air all provide a rich sense of place and time.

The romantic scenes were steamy, original, and plentiful. Time was well spent coming up with these scenes, and it shows.

My thanks to NetGalley and Darcy Burke Publishing for the free ARC!

This has to be one of Darcy Burke's best written stories and that's saying a lot because I love all her stories! This one is just so full of emotion and having many of the characters from the previous books be in this one as well makes it perfect.

This is Rafe and Anne's story, two characters I absolutely adore!! I love how open and honest Anne is, she doesn't hide her feelings at all and although Rafe tries to fight her off, he's in for a losing fight! lol Rafe has quite the past but he's now trying to be an upstanding gentleman and we really get to know the "real" him throughout the story. There are many twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat, scenes that will make you cry and others that will make you laugh.

That one scene with Rafe and Anne drinking the weak tea and eating the salty biscuits the orphans had prepared for them just stole my heart:) A truly wonderful story that will always be one of my favourites from Darcy Burke!!

I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Rafe Blackwell and Anne Pemberton come from completely different worlds: the former money-lending thief and the gently-bred lady. But the two find themselves unexpectedly drawn towards one another after a chance encounter at a bookshop. When they lose contact, neither could imagine the adventure that would bring them back together once more. Family secrets, scandal, stolen children and truths that are about to change the course of everyone's lives...but at what cost?

I really liked the fact that the main characters from the previous two novels of the series took such an active role in this one. The unnecessary amount of random swearing aside, I enjoyed the story being told here, though I did feel that some parts seemed rather abrupt.

The story itself was a sweet one. Despite their differences, Rafe and Anne seem to suit each other nicely. I like that Rafe didn't try to hide or deny his good deeds once Anne discovered them. He wasn't ashamed of the work he did for the orphans, though I did feel that the story sort of glossed over that as a means to an end. I would have liked to hear more from Annie and it would have been nice to see where that connection between her and Anne might lead. And whatever happens to Lorcan? He's just dropped from the storyline with a faint mention towards the end. I feel like I was left with quite a few unanswered questions, but not in that thought-provoking cliffhanger way.
