Stories of sirens, tales of ghosts. Pirate gold on islands afar and spirits united in rusted cars. Dreaming dogs, lovestruck teenagers, the devil’s hand in the onset of war. Stories spanning good and evil. Complete. Concise. Different. Diverse. And waiting for you.
Nigel Blackwell was born in rural Oxfordshire in England. He has a love of books, a PhD in Physical Chemistry, and a black belt in pointing out the obvious.
As a teenager he toured France, Austria, and Switzerland, and loved seeing the wonders of the world and the people in it. Since then he has been fortunate enough to travel across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Japan, and hasn’t been anywhere that doesn’t have the potential for a story.
He now lives in Texas with his wife and daughter, where they enjoy the sunshine and listen to the coyotes howl at night.

INSIDE – a lonely ghost needs company so please come in GEORGE and MARY JO –mortals judges of ourselves RUINED – a ghosted pirate ship THE DATE – words & music are heart’s delight written as literature in the most astounding light – the poetry is exquisite!
By The Light is a collection of short stories that deal with death or loss in someway. And just like how the stories are described as being different, the ways they deal with the subject is different. A pirate sending sailors to their death, a lonely ghost wanting company, a ghost getting revenge, losing a partner suddenly, coming to terms with what happened one night, and the loss of love in general. I enjoyed them all but I want to give special mention to two in particular that I liked the best: AIR and GEORGE AND MARY JO.
The only nitpick I have comes from the sailing-themed stories. They were fine enough but the writing style seemed a bit odd to me, going back and forth between poetry and prose. The author can do a poetic style, as demonstrated in stories like DATE and CALLED. But it felt like they wouldn't commit to one in those stories, creating a bit of disconnect with the apparent shift. If Nigel is reading this, I would like to hear what the process was behind writing those particular stories (I believe they were SISTERS, MARQUE AND REVENGE, and RUINED).
By The Light is a series of short stories with pirate gold, mythical flying creatures, ghosts in rusting cars, and even a dreaming dog. Release day is coming up fast. Preorder now for delivery on 12th November. There's also a paperback version on Amazon :)
