Are you often told that you have a pleasant voice with which you could work as a radio host, but no one has ever offered to read something for money? So you are here. And if you think it would be nice to become the voice of advertising, to voice your favorite artist in dubbing, to become the voice of a cartoon character, to record audiobooks, to release your own podcasts - do not pass by. Clarke's book will not make your dreams come true for you, but it will help you take the first steps on the way to it. And for sure, having met her, you will know an order of magnitude more about this kitchen.
The device of the studio and the necessary equipment in variants from "economy" to "luxury", software that you cannot do without (tied to the American realities of the 2011 sample, but Google will help you in finding analogues, and there is a nice bonus - it is in this area that progress has gone by leaps and bounds, now everything is much more accessible).
The actual voice: anyone who has done vocals. he knows how the sound depends on the posture, the level of warming up of all the muscles and vocal cords, on facial expressions (try saying something with a neutral facial expression, and then "on a smile"). Breathing: the ability to control breathing is the most important factor of professionalism, if you turn pauses on punctuation marks into a resource for additional air intake, nothing good will come of it, there are many practical tips on breathing exercises in the book.
There's Money Where Your Mouth Is,
While there are useful tips on improving one's communication skills, the author comes across as more of a union organizer than a trainer. The book is geared toward people who want to be professional on air speakers.
This would probably be very helpful in conjunction with a voiceover class - as a stand-alone read, it's less intersting than I had hoped. Also had more than one typo, which is distracting.
If you are truly considering a career in the VoiceOver industry, “There’s Money Where Your Mouth Is” by Elaine Clark is the #1 foundational bible to get started. Elaine Clark is the leading authority on everything voiceover-related having created the first school in the U.S. specifically dedicated to voiceover in San Francisco, CA called VoiceOne.
Having taken classes at VoiceOne in previous years, this book was fundamental for me in starting my voiceover journey as it provided me the techniques to use in all of my commercial reads. I find myself constantly referring back to this book and its teachings because they are so relevant, and provide universal tips that can be applied to all types of reads whether they be commercial, character, or narration. To this day, I still use the “Making it M.I.N.E.” method that Elaine pioneered, as well as all of the gesturing movements and copy markings that Elaine describes in Chapter 6 - “Melody & Tempo”.
What sets this book apart from others is that in addition to providing the techniques to begin your voiceover career, Elaine then provides a comprehensive path on all of the next steps you should target if you want to truly be successful in this industry! Not only are there great examples of copy to practice with, but Elaine includes interviews with successful VO industry figures, and provides strategies on how to properly seek out agent representation, and on how to properly market yourself.
My favorite parts are Chapters 10-18 where Elaine goes in-depth into each of the styles you may encounter as a voiceover actor like promos, announcer, characters, corporate narration, and animation. It’s clear that Elaine’s decades of experience in the voiceover field are reflected in the distinct way she presents each of these styles in every chapter.
There a few minor typos and some mismatched sections (like on page 126 the EMPLOYEE and CUSTOMER lines should be switched), but this does not detract from the fact that the material itself can provide you with many important insights to create a voiceover career roadmap for yourself.
If you have signed up for any voiceover classes, and this book is on the syllabus, you should feel confident knowing that your money is being well-spent as you will be studying from the best voiceover book out there!
I highly recommend “There’s Money Where Your Mouth Is” for any voiceover actors who are just starting out, or even for those voiceover veterans that need a foundational refresher, as Elaine’s organizational approach to the betterment of your voiceover techniques will empower you to feel confident and supported in your ability to start your voiceover career on the right note!
I took a class with Elaine years ago when I lived in San Francisco. Touching base with this book again has been a huge help in me getting back into acting and voice work. It's thorough, as is her teaching method in person, and direct and doesn't bullshit you. In a world where everyone wants a cash grab to the point of taking advantage of art students by inflating their ego, Elaine Clark does the opposite in her book. There is money where your mouth is, you just have to do the work.
...If you've ever read anything about working professionally in voice-over, then a lot of the information in Clark's book will be a review for you, but that isn't a bad thing - fundamentals are always important to remember, no matter the topic, and the way Clark breaks down each aspect of the field makes it simple to learn even if you're just skimming through instead of properly reading it.
Where this book truly shines is that it is so comprehensive as to include a variety of detailed copy samples for the reader to practice the concepts and tips Clark discusses...
...In addition to sample copy and her own professional insights, Clark includes interviews with other successful voice-over professionals, such as Hal Riney (member of the Advertising Hall of Fame) and Ned Lott (who has worked on features for Disney, Pixar, Universal, etc.)...
...She also discusses marketing strategy and the union more in-depth than many other sources I've looked over.
There is honestly not much more to be said, apart from the bottom line that There's Money Where Your Mouth Is is a truly comprehensive and invaluable resource for beginners to the field of voice-over work, and I highly recommend it. In fact, if voice-over classes or workshops assign reference material, I think this would (or should) probably be at the top of the required/recommended reading lists.

After having implemented Elaine Clark’s teachings from the 3rd Edition of “There's Money Where Your Mouth Is” in my voiceover work, Elaine outdoes herself once again with the release of the 4th Edition of her best-selling series by diving EVEN DEEPER into each of the core voice acting topics you need to be successful in the Voiceover world.
The biggest enhancement in the 4th edition of “There's Money Where Your Mouth Is” is the sheer depth of information Elaine crams into this book for all levels of voice actors. One of my favorite additions is in Chapter 1 when some of the biggest names in the voiceover world like Dee Bradley Baker, Dave Fennoy, Cissy Jones, Mary Lynn Wissner, and Bill Farmer all share what equipment and devices they use to record their auditions. Just having these testimonials in Chapter 1 alone not only makes the voiceover world seem more relatable to the reader, but it also demonstrates how well-respected of a figure Elaine Clark is in the voiceover community.
Whether you are a tenured voice actor, or just entering the industry in 2020, Elaine’s methods of bringing emotions and truth to your reads are as relevant as ever to providing a “real” or “conversational” read, which is the go-to type of voice to have in 2020. This book shows you all of the necessary techniques you need to perfect that “real” read that is so coveted by agents, casting directors, and clients alike.
As the 3rd Edition of “There's Money Where Your Mouth Is” was published in 2011, a lot has changed in terms of the use of social media and mobile phone applications. It is refreshing to see the 4th edition of “There's Money Where Your Mouth Is” bring Elaine’s teachings to a “mobile device near you” as she includes her apps “Activate Your Voice” and “Finding Melody in Your Voice” into the chapters’ teachings. This inclusion is incredibly helpful in providing a multimedia approach to incorporating the book’s tips and techniques.
The visual format of the 4th edition is also enhanced, as the sample scripts that Elaine has written, as well as the interviews, are now easily identifiable by having them listed with a “light gray” background. Organizing this text in this way makes it easier to visually digest and mark up compared to previous editions of the book where some of the scripts got lost in the paragraphs due to there not being clear text differentiating formats.
And Spoiler Alert* - One of the newest surprises in this 4th edition is in Chapter 18 “Animation, Video, Games, and Toys” where Elaine shares testimonials from the likes of voiceover icons like Dee Bradley Baker, Cissy Jones, and Bill Farmer. Each of them shares their experience regarding the current Animation/Video Game industry climate. It is so helpful and inspiring to hear their success stories and their recommendations for making it in the character voiceover world. In Chapter 19, Bob Bergen and Ned Lott also offer invaluable demo advice for those who are preparing for their demos.
Having had the privilege of taking several classes with the author for the past two years at VoiceOne school in San Francisco, CA, as well as having Elaine Clark produce my professional commercial voice acting demo, I can tell you that the updated 4th Edition of “There's Money Where Your Mouth Is” is the clear voiceover industry standard for anyone who wants to make it in the VO business. By reading and applying Elaine’s teachings from her book, I guarantee they will catapult you much further ahead in your voiceover career than you thought possible! Just like Harlan Hogan quotes on the title, Elaine Clark’s 4th Edition of “There's Money Where Your Mouth Is” is truly the “Industry Bible” for voice acting that you cannot afford to live without!
Just started taking a class based on this book so maybe I will finally finish it.
Put it down then picked it up again. This time I'm reading the chapters out of order to see if it adds interest.
Picked it up again and read more pieces. by this point I think I must have read the whole thing.
I think there's a lot of good information in here, maybe too much. The level of detail the book gets into was overwhelming for a completionist like me because there is way too much to assimilate quickly. However, I do think it's a great resource and will go back to it, as needed in the future.
Another downside, technology changes quickly and some of the information was already beginning to seem dated. This would be the kind of book that would function best as an electronic copy that could be updated once a year.
I had heard about this book from the book 101 weird ways to make money. I finally got around to reading it. It was an interesting read. Though I don't know if I want to be a voice actor. The exercises in the book for voice acting were fun. And I can't wait to try the app for voice exercises that the author has. Even though I did not do the exercises because I don't own a microphone were fun to read through. There was a chapter on what equipment you can purchase for voice actor. All the chapters were informative. Now when I hear a voice over artist I listen to how the actor talks. Maybe one day I will be a voice actor also. I does sound like an interesting career.
Ознакомился мимоходом, так как покупал не для себя. Книга начинается с предисловия "научного редактора", напечатанного с ошибками. Перевод тоже не очень, читается тяжело.
