Rate this book
Freedom is a choice. Is she brave enough to take it or will she remain voiceless?

Moriah is a beautiful mermaid princess that lives in Zoara-Bela under her grandfather, King Abaddon’s cruel reign. On her 16th birthday, she must undergo her rite of passage in which a young mermaid must transform into a human, and live among them for a day without drawing suspicion from the world above.

It’s not until she meets Michael, a young, handsome man, that she witnesses the stark contrast between the openness and kindness of the human world and the bitter reality of her draconian society.

She returns to the city beneath the waves with a longing for the freedom of the shore in her heart. But getting her freedom isn’t as simple as using magic to get a pair of legs.

Moriah must risk her life to free her kingdom and uncover the secrets of her past and family. If she wants her freedom and the chance to love freely, she must stand up to the wicked king who will stop at nothing to crush any voice of dissent.

Time is running out and the fate of an entire kingdom rests on her shoulders.

‘Today is your rite of passage. You’ll be a young woman soon’

Australian author Anna Finch earned her degrees in Legal Studies based on her courses in Literature and Law, and in Teaching. She works as a teacher of English and Humanities, and writes poetry and short stories. VOICELESS is her debut novel.

Long a favorite fantasy topic, mermaids continue to beckon us. Literature is rich in mermaid tales, and even operas have been focused on them - Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák. Anna takes on this fascination with the half fish half human figure and makes her own take on the famous mermaid story.

Setting the tone of this novel in the Prologue, the primary character relates the following; ‘I’d always known I was different; I’d just never realized how peculiar I was. In most ways, I appeared to be like the other maidens that lived beneath the sea. Not that I had a choice. Mermaids were expected to be demure and to respect their betters, which were always men. Our voices within society were stolen from us because of what happened in our past…’ And with a quiet reflection of mermaid history, and the explanation of the title, the story begins.

For those familiar with the mermaid tale in literature, reading the synopsis will indicate how Anna has refreshed this story: ‘Moriah is a beautiful mermaid princess that lives in Zoara-Bela under her grandfather, King Abaddon’s cruel reign. Time is running out and the fate of an entire kingdom rests on her shoulders.’

The book is intended for the Young Adult audience, but the writing is polished and rich in inventions on the theme that all lovers of fantasy will appreciate.

Voiceless is an empowering story of a mermaid who is faced with the challenge of changing her family’s long standing tradition and society’s prejudice against mermaids. The protagonist of this lovely story is Moriah, a beautiful mermaid princess who falls in love with
a human but the city’s curse along with the prejudices will push her away from happiness.

Anna Finch has created an amazing story that combines magical elements, suspense and some moving scenes. I consider Voiceless as a modern version of ‘The Little Mermaid’. It is interesting to see how well she depicts the world of Zoara-Bela and the characters’ feelings in this world where women don’t have a voice. I really enjoyed reading this story as because, as a woman, I felt identified with Moriah as there are many aspects from Zoara- Bela’s society that are present in our modern society. I felt I was accompanying Moriah in her quest for freedom and joy.

Taking into consideration the plot and the main characters, this story is targeted to teenagers and young adults. Yet, I believe that everyone will really enjoy this novel.

Voiceless: A Mermaid's Tale by Anna Finch introduces us a teen and young adult fiction telling us that there's no exception in love between humans and other elemental beings. It's an awakening as well, pertaining to being voiceless in general. This book will bring us deep down in the sea realm of mermaids, mermen and other sea creatures.

The rulership of King Abaddon deems to be taken for caution. On the other hand, Prince Abdiel is considerate. Moriah is the crown princess, and is with these two men in her life who have great influence in her being.

The time has come for Moriah to undergo a rite of passage. She asks for help for her training but while she prepares for that important milestone, so is the important event in meeting Michael, a human. Friendship and love grow between the two, shaken up with her grandfather's decision for her with one of the oldest, vilest, and cruelest of the lords, sensing it dubiously. Now she's torn between her freedom and existence. Will she be able to hit two birds with one stone?

This book has a beautiful message for the young ones to take it easy in the stage of adolescence. Along with it is starting to shape a young one's identity on its themes like freedom, responsibility, determination, curiosity, restlessness and decision making. Moriah's character is invigorating, youthful and sparks the zest in life, an encouragement to the teens and young adolescents.

Hence, I give a four-star rate for the captivating plot of the story, valuable themes and the characters that complement one another. Slight profanity on the physical plane but bearable. Therefore, I recommend to all types of readers, specifically and absolutely for romance and fantasy lovers.

First of all I love Mermaids so I was very interested in this book by title alone. I love the glossary introduction which comes in very handy as you are reading this book. Moriah is a beautiful mermaid princess that lives in Zoara-Bela under her grandfather, King Abaddon. On her 16th birthday she must undergo her rite of passage and transform into a human for a day without drawing any suspicions from anyone. She meets Michael who steals her heart and makes it difficult to return to the mermaid world. The story continues with her longing for freedom to go to shore where her heart is but she must stand up to many obstacles along the way. This book seems to be a YA adult version of a timeless classic tale which is loved by others. I think this is a way to continue to pierce the hearts of YAs in reading more complicated versions of their childhood tales. I love the characters she created in this very well-written book. I highly recommend it.

Seeking out books I see in Facebook ads can be hit or miss, but I'm glad I picked up this one. Voiceless: A Mermaid's Tale by Anna Finch is a uniquely modern take on "The Little Mermaid" that is feminist without being too misandronist. It is not a true retelling of my favorite fairy tale, but more of a "What if?" scenario that explores what could have happened if the story took place in a different type of setting and if the main character had made a different decision when facing the sea witch, kind of like selecting a diverging branch in a visual novel. Though it uses some direct dialogue from the Disney movie during a key scene that many authors seem to enjoy referencing, there are few references to the Disney movie or even the Hans Christian Andersen story overall. Instead, this is a well-researched book about trauma and manipulation built around a fantasy setting.

Voiceless tells the story of an ambitious young mermaid named Moriah who is trapped in an underwater society that treats women as second-class citizens. It's a powerful story about women's rights and liberation, although I thought it was interesting that the author chose to make women oppressed in a mermaid society because mermaids are typically presented as matriarchies. However, I can see what she was going for by incorporating the metaphor of the original Little Mermaid losing her voice. Moriah chooses not to give up her voice and requests magic lessons from the sea witch instead but was voiceless in a different way due to her grandfather's oppression of her society. In that respect, this book reminded me a bit of Frozen 2 by making the grandfather a villain so the main character would be one generation removed from him and less likely to know or understand his motives than she would be with her father, who is kind and cares about her.

Like other adaptations I've read and seen, the human world in Voiceless is set in modern times, making Moriah's society feel even more dated due to its backward way of thinking. When Moriah visits the land, she falls for a human named Michael and does lots of modern activities with him like playing video games and eating fast food. Michael helps open Moriah's eyes to the many problems in her society and inspires her to lead a revolution against her grandfather. He is not a cardboard prince who is just there to drive the plot along. Michael has problems of his own involving his family that Moriah is eventually able to help with by using the magic that she learns from the sea witch. Both Moriah and Michael are flawed characters that complement each other perfectly, allowing them to learn and grow.

I couldn't help seeing some parallels between the mermaid world in this story and some of the more problematic areas of the middle east. Using power tactics and treating women like second-class citizens is something that certain parts of the world still struggle with today. While I probably would have been less interested in this story if it didn't take place in a fantasy setting, I appreciate that the author used this book to give a voice to those who might consider themselves voiceless. In addition to encouraging its readers to stand up for what they believe in, it also has a strong mental health message and encourages therapy to recover from trauma. It goes beyond the "happily ever after" ending of a fairy tale to show that there is always more work to be done.

Voiceless is a modern feminist fairy tale done right that doesn't degrade all men into sexist dirtbags. It has strong characters with complex backgrounds and a great message about speaking out against injustice. This book does a much better job than Ever Cursed to show the breakdown of a patriarchal society and give women their own voice. I like that it doesn't criticize nations that are already free and instead compares two very different societies to show what it's like to learn that there are better opportunities out there, which in a way, was what the original "Little Mermaid" character was seeking. It draws more inspiration from real life than your average fantasy story, which is what makes this book truly unique. If modern feminist fairy tales are your jam, be sure to check this one out.

This story of Moriah, a beautiful mermaid princess that lives in Zoara-Bela under her grandfather, King Abaddon’s cruel reign, is just superb! At the age of 16 her life changed forever and the subsequent sequences of events after that were what kept me at the edge of my seat all the time.
Extremely well written, this book falls into the category of Teen and Young adult emotions and feelings nonfiction, but adults, like me, can be perfectly get entertained by it until the last page.
At first, I felt intimidated by the fact that this book has 49 chapters but as soon as I started reading it
the book, the narrative immediately hooked me. It is easy to read and it has a glossary at the beginning, with the pronunciation of some words that appear in the text. There are also some dialogueS mingled in the chapters, which make the story easier to follow along. I loved this tale!

“Voiceless” is an interesting YA retelling of the classic tale of “The Little Mermaid”. The world-building and character development was impressive given that the characters are based on beloved classic characters whether it be the original Hans Christian Andersen version or the Disney version of this timeless story.

It was interesting to unfold the contrasts Finch created in her telling of this story of empowering women, finding love, and toppling prejudice within different societies. Finch has a honed skill and I look forward to reading more of her novels.

I would recommend this book to fans of fairy tale retellings.

“Voiceless: A Mermaid´s Tale” is the debut novel of the Australian author Anna Finch. Narrated in the first person, we came to know Moriah, a teenage mermaid who has to free her society from her grandfather’s reign. During a rite of passage, she meets Michael, and she falls in love with him immediately.
This was a fascinating and captivating read that had me immersed from the beginning. I am the type of person who wants to find at least one love story inside a novel, and this novel is not the exception. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling.

This is an incredibly poignant read. “Voiceless” is an amazing fantasy book. Part romance and part suspense, this novel hooked me as soon as I started it and I was not ready for this rollercoaster of emotions. I did not see some twists coming.
This is a five stars book because of the fast paced plot and the well-portrayed characters: Moriah and Michael are really interesting and have solid stories that hooked me. Moreover, the author did a great job with the original idea of the plot. The setting is precisely described so I felt inside the story all the time.
Fans of fantasy books, like me, would have the best of times with this masterpiece.

The cover caught my attention at first sight and after reading the description I was really eager to read the whole story. The author did a great job with this novel; characters are very well developed and portrayed, and the plot was just great. It has a pace that demanded me to keep on reading. Chapters are short which allowed me to read almost non stop because it was entertaining and there was new information in every new chapter.
It is a young adult fantasy novel that caught me reading at the edge of my seat. I would definitely recommend reading it, not only to teens, but also to adults, like me, who enjoy this genre.

Let out your voice!

This was an enchanting tale in many aspects. I love how the storyline touched on modern societal concerns while still giving the reader the beautifully cold world under the sea. Moriah had a taste of freedom while residing in the human world as well as finding out what truth warmth and love can be. Who would not want that? Especially when the world she comes from is ruled by a tyrant who will do everything in his power to maintain his reign? I do not blame Moriah for wanting to break free and in the process, free her people also. A great story with great characters and a good plot. I truly enjoyed myself as I read the book. Highly recommended!

Modern and Beautiful
“Voiceless” is a reimagining of “The Little Mermaid”, with a modern and urban vibe that takes the story in a fresh and new direction. Moriah is a strong, intelligent, and self-aware mermaid in a kingdom where mermaids are voiceless and considered below mermen. Moriah’s odyssey will change her kingdom, and her life forever. This is an excellent re-invention of the fairytale and one that I enjoyed reading. I highly recommend this for your TBR list!

A strong female lead...

I loved this fairy tale from beginning to end. Although the concept was a tried and tested one, it didn't take away from the amount of enjoyment the story provided.

The main protagonist decides to go against everything she should do and embarks on a journey towards both self discovery and eventually saving her world.

Relevant, remarkably written and it pulls you in from the first page. Highly recommend.

"Voiceless: A Mermaid's Tale" introduces us to the main character, princess Moriah. She is a mermaid residing in an underwater city called Zoara-Bela. Moriah is also the granddaughter of Zoara-Bela's dogmatic ruler, King Abaddon. Moriah is far from helpless and timid, though. Even though she has been raised to adopt a subdued lifestyle as a mermaid (as customary in her kingdom), in actuality, Moriah is very brave, mentally sharp and inquisitive. She is the only one who can create much-needed change in Zoara-Bela.

On her sixteenth birthday, Moriah has to undertake a rite of passage and experience life as a human girl in the human world. On dry land, she meets a human boy, Michael, who introduces her to human culture. She spots many vast differences between human culture and her own. Despite various cultures existing on earth, humans do not live in direct oppression and still have a sense of freedom amongst themselves. She returns to Zoara-Bela with new ideals and burning questions that she needs answered. There are secrets hidden in merefolk history that she sets out to uncover. With it holds the power to set herself and her people free.

In general, the novel isn't too prolonged, nor is it brief. Personally, I think it has the perfect length for a novel. The storyline is easy to follow and will provide readers with days worth of mesmerizing reading time. The storyline is evenly paced and will immediately maintain the reader's attention and interest. I really enjoyed getting to understand Moriah's mind, moral compass, strength and sense of duty. The challenges she encountered only helped to rouse her resilient spirit. If you enjoy reading fantasy adventure novels, with strong female leads, then this novel has all of the above.

Anna Finch has an incredibly imaginative writing style. You can tell that she poured a great amount of creative energy into the book's world building and character development. Finch was successfully able to merge fantasy with religious themes and contemporary social issues. Those genres blended together very nicely in the novel, and it takes a truly talented writer to build a captivating narration around them. Overall, this book has been an absolute treasure to dive into. Pun intended. So by all means, secure your copy and dive into this 5-star read today!

Readers’ Comments
“This novel sort of reminded me of the Disney film I saw a few months ago. So, although it´s not so original, it´s still a thrilling story. I liked the princess a lot as she was strong minded and wanted things to change. A lot of teenagers will relate to her.” Boy, aged 14
“I didn´t mark this book strongly for originality as the plot is sort of predictable. But it´s well written, exciting in parts, and the characters were cool. I liked the message of standing up to tyranny. Maybe this book should be read by Russians.” Girl, aged 15
“The biggest problem with this book is the predictability. I knew she´d end up standing up to the king. But it´s still a good coming-of-age story. The princess soon begins to understand the problems in her culture and all the control there is. I think it mirrors many problem in the world. It´s a bit slow in parts, but I still enjoyed it.” Boy, aged 15 – with a little help from his teacher
“The cover looks cool and very Disney! The story is interesting with good and bad characters to love and hate. I think most teenagers will find this a light, fun read. I think a lot of girls will understand how the protagonist feels and why she fights back.” Girl, aged 15

To Sum It Up:
‘A compelling, coming-of-age story with a strong cast of characters. A RED RIBBON WINNER and highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards

"Today is your rite of passage. You’ll be a young woman soon."

This novel takes everything that's loved about the Little Mermaid and expands off of it.

Set in Zoara-Bela, Moriah struggles from the curse which is daunted onto mermaids from Gaea's actions from decades ago.

Anna Finch is really strong at developing characters. It feels like there has been a lot of thought put into every character that appears in at least more than one scene. The characters are lively with their goals and motivations, but also how they tie into the main themes of the book. In addition, the worldbuilding in this novel is so sophisticated. I've always had a hard time imagining what a world looks like, but the author of this novel makes it easy to imagine every scene as it happens in my head.

The only thing which I wished would be further explained in the novel was the ending. It seemed like I think that was one thing that could've been intertwined a little more. Alongside that, I did feel like the first few chapters felt like info dumping. Though it was interesting information we received, dumping it all at once can feel overwhelming for the audience.

Overall, 'Voiceless' is a powerful novel which explores a new perspective to 'The Little Mermaid,' earning a decent 4 stars.

Classic comparison with depth

Although the premise for this one is closely related to that of the classic The Little Mermaid, I think Voiceless has a much more developed context for more mature readers. The introduction clearly outlines the expectations for the story and the type of society that is explained within the pages. The story is filled with bravery and standing up for one's beliefs of doing what you feel is best for yourself without the hinder of what others expect or want from you. This one is a solid read that deserves some credit and high recommendation. It's difficult to measure up to such a classic and timeless tale, but this one is definitely a great runner!

Great characters

In Anna Finch’s Voiceless: A Mermaid’s Tale, we meet Moriah, a mermaid princess unlike most others. She is a mermaid princess not longing necessarily for a prince (not as a main focus, anyway), but for freedom and kindness. She is not a girl leaving her happy family behind, where they will get on without her. It's not that simple: Moriah has a family and a kingdom she must protect and set free from a harsh ruler.
From the start, the world is bluntly explained (the society’s castes, for example). I do wish it had been more subtle, but the way it is explained makes the introduction and understanding of the story clear, so that the plot can begin. Also, in a society where children are taught that men must stay in their station and women are inferior, and that all that don’t obey are the worst criminals, I found it strange that they had a rite of passage that included visiting land. Despite such a strong focus on keeping control, the mermaids are able to leave the kingdom for a day and experience, what Moriah finds to be, a better society. That said, I really like Moriah and the story was smooth.

Mermaid fans, this book is for you!

A journey of discovery for a young mermaid who discovers a whole new world, the human world precisely. She discovers a dark truth about her past and history. As part of the royal family, there are certain things a maiden doesn’t and isn’t allowed to do but, Moriah decides to change that and become more than just a simple mermaid.
Author A. Finch has created a wonderful tale that is written in a great flow that will capture the reader. I did notice some similarities with Disney, The Little Mermaid, which I did enjoy, and they seemed very fitting to the characters. The way the sceneries are described by the author, make the book much easier to imagine.
I greatly enjoyed this book and recommend to all!

The title "Voiceless" got my attention in the first place. The story is about a young mermaid who comes from a place where the voices of mermaids are considered to be below that of the mermen hence the title voiceless. The protagonist, Moriah decides to go against all that she has known all her life to embark on a self-discovery journey and eventually ends up saving her world.
It was a captivating and fascinating read that had me immersed in it from the beginning. The author did an amazing job with the original plot and the setting was well-written, I felt as if I was in the same world as the characters due to the easy flow of the story.
Extremely well-written and it falls under the categories of teen, young adult, fairytale, fantasy, and romance it can be read by both the young and the old. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to read the young adult retelling of "The Little Mermaid".

Narrated by sixteen year old Moriah, Finch's fantasy draws inspiration from Disney's version of: The Little Mermaid.
I liked that Finch used Hebrew as "magic" words/spells, and origin for character names

I received an ARC of this book on Reedsy in exchange for an honest review.

Deep beneath the sea lies a secret world of Merfolk and magic; however, it is not as idyllic as it first appears. Moriah is a sixteen-year-old mermaid, the granddaughter of the king, Abaddon. In her world, maidens are barely permitted to speak and can only rarely share their opinions with others. Luckily, Moriah’s father is more open-minded, permitting Moriah to learn to read and speak her mind on occasion.

Following tradition, Moriah has the chance to travel to the human world, one to which Moriah’s ancestors used to belong before a curse condemned them to an unfeeling life as Merpeople. On the surface, she meets a human named Michael and she sees how different her life could be if the curse were lifted. Upon her return, Moriah begins to study magic and learn more about her world. Mysteries are revealed to her as she begins to understand her grandfather for who he really is and the fact that her father has kept dark secrets from her for her entire life. Moriah’s strength of will and desire to improve life for everyone inspires her to step beyond herself to destroy the forces of evil and free her people.

Readers familiar with The Little Mermaid will recognize echoes of Ariel’s story within Moriah’s tale. However, Moriah is a stronger, more self-possessed heroine who becomes a leader while navigating the obstacles in her way. The tale follows a compelling story arc, though the writing could benefit from some restructuring. Instead of allowing the story to unfold, the narrative is dictated toward the reader, causing the flow to become sluggish at times. A host of plot developments and details are delivered throughout the story, attempting to accomplish a huge list of tasks in a relatively short time.

Unlike many young adult novels, Voiceless attempts to address the psychological effects inherent to the struggles Moriah faces. While an important effort, it feels forced at the end of the book and could be better implemented. Overt references to Christianity pervade the story without any firm explanation. Occasional strong language and cursory discussions of violence and romance make this story an acceptable transition to young adult literature for less mature readers. While ultimately an interesting story, the writing and delivery could use some support to become a more engaging read.

Like all merfolk, sixteen-year-old Moriah suffers the consequences of a curse bestowed by goddess Gaea. Living in a crumbling Zoara-Bela with little hope for the future, Moriah sprouts legs to observe the human realm. She encounters handsome, dark-eyed Michael Adams. Moriah feels connected to Michael and is happier than ever with him. However, when Michael intercedes in a domestic dispute, he is thrown into the ocean. Moriah dives after him and saves his life with a healing song. Yet, as she retreats into the ocean, there is a yearning in her heart. How can they possibly be together when their two worlds are so irrevocably different?

Voiceless by Anna Finch contains some imaginative scenes in this riveting fantasy novel. For example, I adored the scene in chapter five when Moriah explored the human world and asked people questions about everyday objects. Moriah’s excitement and charming naivete about everything is incredibly engaging and fun for the reader. However, this captivating exploration also helps to develop the distinction between humans and merfolk. I found this contrast incredibly important because it adds to Moriah’s sense of desperation as she tries to come to a solution.

This is a creative young adult fantasy novel, but I felt like much of the story is told to readers rather than shown. The prologue provides a lot of helpful information in this way. It provides the reader with basic information that’s necessary to understand the plot without descriptive and figurative language or dialogue.

The romance between Moriah and Michael is compelling and emotional. After Moriah returns to the sea, I was left wanting to see more of Michael as I thought his character was intriguing. As Moriah works with the sea witch, we move on from her romantic motivations and discover more depth to her character and the story that I think readers will find absorbing.

Voiceless: A Mermaid’s Tale is an enchanting coming-of-age young adult fantasy novel that has a sprightly protagonist and a fun storyline that fans of teen romance will find fresh and entertaining.

‘Voiceless: A Mermaid’s Tale,’ by Australian author Anna Finch, is a reimagined take on a timeless classic.

‘Voiceless’ tells the story of Moriah, both a princess and a mermaid, who has spent her entire life in the tyrannical shadow of her grandfather, King Abaddon. The story leans heavily on a reimagined ‘Little Mermaid-esque’ template, one which involves all mermaids having to transform into a human on their sixteenth birthday and quietly live amongst them for twenty-four hours.

In Moriah's case, everything seems to be going as expected until she crosses paths with Michael, a kind-hearted soul who helps her see the inequity between the world above and her world below. With a newfound sense of rebellion, Moriah returns to her kingdom, determined to topple Abaddon’s rule.

In general, ‘reimaginings’ are incredibly difficult to pull off. Not unlike covering a well-known song, it is difficult to fully immerse oneself into a story without continually comparing it to the source material. With that all being said, ‘Voiceless’ is, for the most part, a success.

Finch succeeds in crafting a fully-realized world and populates it with a cast of colorful, nuanced characters. While the claustrophobic first-person perspective and Finch’s flowery, adjective-laden prose may be an acquired taste, both make sense within the context of the YA genre. Unfortunately, adhering so closely to an already established template makes it incredibly difficult to heap a pile of praise upon this novel, regardless of how well it may or may not be written.

Still, if nothing else, ‘Voiceless: A Mermaid’s Tale’ is a solid debut from a talented writer—here’s hoping for a more original take next time around.

Voiceless: A Mermaid’s Tale was written by Anna Finch. It tells the story of Moriah a mermaid princess that lives in Zoara-Bela. Her kingdom is ruled by her grandfather and is not a pleasant place to live. Moriah is faced with the reality of how her people live when she has to transform into a human and live among them for a day without drawing any suspicion, in this adventure is where she meets Michael, a human with whom she falls in love with. With a better picture of what she wants for her life and kingdom, she returns to Zoara-Bela with a mission, to free her kingdom and uncover the secrets of her past and family. Her battle starts, but the question is whether she is ready for it.

I loved this book! Such a powerful message about standing up for yourself and what you believe in. Moriah’s character is flawless, filled with emotions and a lot of bravery. The plot is good and the characters are quite unique. I found it inspiring! Highly recommended!

The fantasy genre is a rather difficult one it write for, as it has a unique template form that incorporates all elements from the hero’s journey. Anna Finch does a great job staying true to form while creating a unique and inspiring tale. Her creatures and fantastical characters are best suited for children’s stories, but it is unclear whether she targeted the story to young adults or children. At times, the language is very mature, but not inappropriate. Other times, it reads like bedtime story. If the author truly wants to gain a strong audience, she needs to write for one particular age group and leave it at that.

What I found valuable about “Voiceless” by author Anna Finch is that teenagers can still read about mermaids and enjoy it. This fantastic characters are usually in children books, but not in young adults ones.
To begin with, the landscapes of the story are vast and the narration is detailed as the author writes attractively with vivid imagery that led me on a fantastic visual journey. Also, the feelings and experiences of this beautiful mermaid princess (Moriah) are well developed.
I think that the adventure story of this young character may be inspiring for many young readers, not only for encouraging the reading habit but also for facing adversities in life.

This is a great book for nerdy 80s kids like myself who were obsessed with The Little Mermaid and always thought, "Hmmm I wish there was a novel based on Ariel." This is a imaginative retelling of the classic tale, that doesn't venture too far outside of its basic elements, but enough so to keep you reading. I do agree with another reviewer who said it was hard to tell who the authors target audience was. At times it seems like a YA novel, then adult fiction, then even sometimes a fairytale for children. Besides that, I did enjoy reading it very much.
