Beth is on top of the world. She has a loving husband, she's pregnant, she has a great job at the local library.

Coming home from work one day, she finds that someone has been in her house. They've left a wreath (from her sister's grave site) hanging above her bed and a knife buried to the hilt in her pillow. There are no signs of a break in ... and no one has a key except for their house cleaner who has been with them several years.

Things get even worse with a series of notes delivered to her home ... threatening notes ... and they sound like they're coming from someone who knows the family well.

Who would want Beth dead? What has she ever done to bring this to herself? Why is someone tormenting her?

This is an extremely well written complex psychological thriller with memorable characters. There are twists and turns and lies and secrets. It's a real page turner from start to surprising conclusion.

Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Beth has a wonderful life, a nice home, great husband- the only thing she is missing is children...After several miscarriages she is pregnant again and determined to do everything Right to keep this child with her...
When she was a young girl she walked to town with her little sister..Who was hit by a car when Beth looked away, leaving her with a life full of guilt..As she gets her house in order for her baby's arrival, strange and frightening incidents occur! Something from her sister's grave appears above her bed, with dripping red paint messages of RIP showing up all around!
Beth becomes paranoid, turning to her friend Kim for strength, even suspecting her poor husband. The feelings induced by paranoia are so intense, believing the worst from any action or words she hears.
Who is doing this to this lovely couple, and how far will Beth's new 'beliefs' take her...An intriguing story that makes you think...Especially before sitting down with a new friend for coffee....

Another day, another dollar, and another Tilbury thriller that gives the reader way more than they ever bargained for! This is one author who has absolutely no problem pulling the wool over your eyes and fooling even the most seasoned crime connoisseurs multiple times within the short span of a single novel. It explores the insidious nature of jealousy, hatred and wanting what you simply can't have in life and is scarily realistic and within the realms of possibility. Remember: Evil comes in all shapes and sizes, and our antagonist is a devious and thoroughly delusional individual.

The story follows Beth and her husband, David, who have gone through a hellish time in terms of 3 miscarriages, and now she is with baby once again. They are naturally terrified that history will repeat itself once more but there is also a more pressing development to deal with. Disturbing things keep happening; someone has been letting themselves in to Beth and David's home and carrying out threatening tasks. With no-one and nothing quite as it seems we wonder who exactly is behind these barbaric and cruel actions. Soon the campaign of terror eclipses Beth's seemingly perfect life and triggers a domino effect. Once the first domino has fallen is there any hope of escaping the devastation to come?

Torment is packed full of Tilbury's trademark surprises, twists and red herrings, and we are taken on a truly gripping rollercoaster ride which never quite plateau's or even's out; this is fantastic because by keeping you off-kilter it turns into a wholly unpredictable yarn. I was always tense waiting for a new threat to emerge. Tilbury is truly adept at completely rattling his readers and shocking them to their core, and this delivers all you could want and more. It's an addictive, absorbing and compulsively readable domestic thriller. Highly recommended.

When I’m in the mood for a fast paced, dark and twisted thriller I know I can always count on a Mark Tilbury book to deliver and this was no exception. I swear his books are all unputdownable, once I start I’m instantly sucked in and I have a hard time stopping for anything!

One of my favorite things about this one was that it was nonstop action, even in the more sedate parts of the story there was always a feel that something more was about to happen, there was a sense of menace and danger always lurking around the corner. Or the next page haha but seriously it was such an unsettling read, Beth was basically on pins and needles throughout which also made me anxious, a sure sign of a good psychological thriller.

This was definitely both twisted and twisty, Tilbury never shies away from exploring the dark and depraved depths of humanity, if you like very bold and dark crime reads you have to try his books. While I did predict a couple of the smaller twists, I definitely didn’t have everything worked out in the end, which was both clever and a bit shocking. Definitely recommended by me, but again it’s dark, don’t read this late at night.

Beth and her husband David are a happily married couple with a lot to look forward to. That changes when they come home and realise someone has been in their house. There on in, poor Beth questions everyone and everything.

Even though Beth has enough on her plate, she still also finds time to comfort her good friend Kim who is in an abusive relationship and invites her to move in with her and David for Kim’s own safety as well as having the comfort of having a friend around whilst some stalker seems to have made it their mission to make Beth’s life hell.

There are a fair few twists and turns, some I saw coming, others that took me by surprise. It certainly makes for a compelling read that kept me peeled to the pages.

Torment is a tense and gripping psychological thriller that will have you hooked. Like Beth, I dreaded every time something came in the post as to what was inside as it certainly sent chills down my spine. Another page turner of a read from one of my favourite authors in this genre.

My thanks to the author for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 / 5 rounded up.

Torment by Mark Tilbury gave me serious The Woman Next Door vibes, and although some of it was predictable for me, it was still a great read!

What it's about: Beth is pregnant and married to a man she loves, has a best friend named Kim, plus loves her job at the library; overall, she is living a very nice life. But when she and her husband come home one night to find a wreath over their bed and a knife in her pillow, things are about to drastically change. The only person with a key is their cleaner whom she trusts impeccably, but as someone continues to terrorize her, she begins to wonder just who else has a key, and who would hate her enough to want her dead . . .

Torment has a very intense start and just gets even more intense as the book goes on. Beth constantly feels like someone is out to kill her, which she states repetitively. I thought that was a bit of a strange conclusion to jump to immediately (I would assume out to hurt or terrorize) but who am I to judge this poor woman. There was something going on throughout the entire novel, and I was very saddened and creeped out by what was happening to her. The stalker does something that made me cry so this might be a tearjerker for some, and it definitely was a bit for me.

This felt like a book I had read before, so that may have helped bring down my rating a bit. However, there were still plenty of surprises, and I think most people will really enjoy it. This is now my second Tilbury book, and I do have to say that while I liked You Belong To Me better, this was still a solid book. The characters were very frustrating for me (thank you Mr. Author), and I can't say I fully liked anyone in the book. I felt super sorry for Beth, but at the same time I didn't think she was the smartest crayon in the box which at times was very frustrating.

Small trigger warning for disturbing content, but it wasn't as bad as You Belong To Me. Chapters are also very short, and this was a short book in general, so I flew through it which is something I love about this author's books.

Song/s the book brought to mind: Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran

Final Thought: Torment is a book about revenge and obsession, and how far someone will go to exact their revenge. It was a gritty novel which is what I have come to expect from this author, and while it was not my favorite book of all time, it was still super compulsive and highly readable. I will continue to read and love Tilbury, and if you haven't heard of him, you need to look him up and read him ASAP.

Thank you to the publisher for providing me with an advance review copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Sadly I hated this one and the 'Torment' was mine!

The main characters Beth and her husband David become the focus of a 'psycho'. Someone is stalking them...and then...the 'torment' began for me. I found the writing stilted and forced with poorly developed characters and the plot was woeful. I really disliked these characters and wished them harm before it even began. I had the 'psycho' figured out as soon as they were revealed and was desperately hoping I was wrong but alas not much changed.

The upside to the immature writing was that it was over quickly. I hate books that tell me what to think and one's that disregard even the most common basic procedures of life or realities of how issues would unfold in the real world. The denouement was ridiculous, as was the motive for the crime.

I was glad this one was over but that said there are mainly 4 and 5 star reviews on GR...

Every time that I read a Mark Tilbury book it is like discovering a new author time and time again. All his characters are fresh, the plot unique and the guaranteed thrill from a different angle. The only thing that they have in common is how addictive they are and so impossible to put down.
Beth and David seem to have it all, jobs they love and a beautiful home but they have seen hard times. Beth never really got over the death of her sister when they were children and the couple has just found out that they are having a baby, after already miscarrying three previous pregnancies. So they have a bit of sparkle about them that this may be their turning point.
When they return home after an evening out they make a horrid discovery, a wreath on the door and a knife through Beth’s pillow. The police can seem to do little to help, so Beth turns to find an ear to listen to her fears in her best friend Kim. Kim has her own problems, living in an abusive relationship so with David working long hours and at times away from home the solution seems to be for Kim to move in with them.
Mark Tilbury certainly packs the pages with growing tension as the invasion into Beth’s life increases and moves onto the next level. I love that he isn’t afraid to express his female characters to the fullest and how every situation will affect them in the story. I am always taken by surprise at how far he pushes the characters, I did work out who but not the why.
As soon as I pick up this author’s books I know that I should sit with my back firmly against the wall so that I don’t have to glance over my shoulder at what’s behind me. He really knows how to creep me out. Oh boy, the last few chapters were definitely read with one eye closed. I wanted to know what was happening but didn’t want to see either.
Awesome!

In 'Torment', Beth is expecting a child with her husband David but she didn't expect to become the target of a deranged stalker. Someone has the key to their house and isn't afraid to use it to send a clear message: he / she wants her dead. The question is, why?

This aptly titled book was a torment to get through due to the atrocious writing and plot execution. There were only a few characters yet they managed to be undeveloped, uninteresting and unlikeable. Beth was incredibly moronic, David was strangely unconcerned by everything while Kim was like a bug that just kept coming back.

The writing was juvenile and repetitive, as evidenced by the constant telling and zero showing. The characters had nothing going on in their lives - they mostly argued, ate and drank a lot (not necessarily in that order). They also enjoyed saying 'I don't want to fall out with you'. The break-ins and mails failed to elicit a sense of danger.

There was no suspense as it was painfully obvious who the perpetrator was. The author tossed in an but it was impactless as all the characters and relationships were paper-thin. The police procedural was laughably unrealistic and abominable.

The denouement was more like an unintended comedy, what with . The motive was of course, .

Overall, 'Torment' was a fast yet frustrating read owing to the awful writing, bland characters and absence of emotional depth.

Bethany is happily married to David and after 3 miscarriages they are crossing everything that this time the pregnancy will go to term and they will have the baby they want so much. They have a beautiful house and no money worries so the baby will make their lives complete.

While Beth is cocooned in her bubble of happiness she finds out her friend, Kim, is in an abusive relationship. Determined to help Kim out of a bad situation Beth invites her into her home. Then strange things start happening and Beth's life starts unravelling.

Why is the death of Heidi coming back to haunt Beth after all these years? Who could possibly want to cause her harm?

This is a well written psychological thriller full of twists and turns as the we try to unravel the clues. There seems to be no clues and nothing that anyone can do to save Beth from the psychopath who wants to destroy her but who is it and why.

A very gripping story that kept the pages turning all the way to the fast paced climatic ending.

A brilliant read.

Thank you very much to Mark Tilbury for the advance copy of this first class thriller. This is my unbiased review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Happily married couple David and Beth return home one evening to find a wreath from Beth's sister’s grave hanging above their bed and a kitchen knife embedded in her pillow. The police are unable to do much with so little evidence, and the couple are determine not to let someone run them out of their home. However, unbeknown to them that this is only to beginning.

To make the situation even more stressful, after several miscarriages, David and Beth are finally expecting their first child together. With everything going on in their lives, they are both fully aware that Beth needs to stay calm and relaxed in order to give this child the best chance of reaching full term.

Mark has created such a vast array of characters for Torment. Some I adored, and felt such empathy with, and others I knew from the start were more trouble than they were worth. Mark creates some of the most evil characters I have ever had the displeasure of reading about, and I bloody love it! At times, I wanted to wrap Beth in cotton wool, but at the same time I wanted to shake some sense into her. David was also always on my nice list, but that doesn't always mean I am right.

I had a theory about half way through, based on both the plot and the cover (yes I take the cover into consideration when putting theories together). It turns out I was completely wrong and once again was thrown from one direction to another by Mark's fantastic suspenseful writing. I am now more than convinced of Mark's ability to pull the wool over my eyes time and time again before leaving me with explosive endings.

Torment was suspenseful and addictive from start to finish!

Now I wont lie, there were a handful of times I got frustrated whilst reading Torment, but this was mainly down to character naivety than anything else. If you have read Torment I'd love to discuss this further with you in the comments as I don't want to give anything away.

I am now determined to get to some of Mark's older novels, which I am sure will keep me fully entertained and on my toes until his next one. I am obsessed with the fact that the last two books I have read by Mark proves that we readers are given far more than we ever anticipated and I honestly can not wait to dive into more of his incredible work.

Beth and Dave are married and trying for a baby. Unfortunately, Beth has had 3 miscarriages and has found out she is pregnant again. Sinister things start happening in the house and Beth turns not to her husband but her friend Kim for support. Can Beth cope with all the stress and keep her much longed for baby? Will Beth and Dave keep their marriage alive with all the stress? All is definitely not as it seems.
This book had me hooked from the start. A great plot which is full of suspense and has you on the edge of your seat. I couldn’t help but shout at the book, it was so tense! I highly recommend this book.

When I pick up a book by Mark Tilbury I’m never certain what to expect, and that’s why I love this author’s books I always think ‘expect the unexpected’ and the author normally delivers. Torment is the author’s latest stand-alone psychological thriller, it’s not as dark or gritty as some of his previous books but it still made for a heart stopping read.

When someone wants you dead is there anywhere to hide? For Beth Cruikshank it appears not, unless she moved to a desert Island, but then where would be the fun In that? It appears eight week pregnant Beth has a stalker, an unbalanced one at that! First she finds a wreath from her sister’s grave hanging above the bed and a kitchen knife lodged in her pillow (enough to freak out even the most fearless amongst us) but that’s just the start. So begins a campaign of terror, that will push Beth to the edge, its obvious someone wants Beth dead, but to the who? and why? you will just have to read Torment to find out.

Mark Tilbury is a master in creating the most loathsome characters, their complex, calculated, and unlikable, they are the type of characters that make your skin crawl, their auras are surrounded by malevolence. Beth’s stalker is such a character and although you have no idea who it is, it’s obvious they are one sick and troubled individual. You can’t help but have some sympathy for Beth’s predicament, and sense her growing panic and fear, as the stalkers psychological torment towards Beth escalates the sense of foreboding increases. Mark Tilbury keeps the reader engaged throughout as you are never sure what the stalker has planned next for poor Beth.

I have to admit I guessed the offender, and worked out the ‘why’ quite early on in the book, but I must apologise to the author as I thought he had gone for a much-used plot that’s been done to death (no pun intended). I really thought that meant the book would hold no surprises for me, but guess what? The author still managed to combine an element of surprise, with a deliciously deceptive twist in its tail.

Torment is the type of book where paranoia flourishes, each character raises suspicion, which added tension to the overall plot. I read a lot of psychological thrillers, plenty can produce the suspense but very few give the element of surprise that I crave in a book of this genre, but Mark Tilbury managed to accomplish both. For me personally I enjoyed the second half of the book the most, it’s here the author’s vivid imagination really comes into play. I read Torment literally in two sittings (always a sign of a good read) so absorbed was I in this tale of escalating terror. Highly recommended to those who enjoy a fast-paced narrative with a good deal of tension.

Emotionally intense. Mark Tilbury weaves a story of psychological warfare with seeds of doubt that create a scenario that could so easily be true crime.

David and Beth seem to have it all. A beautiful home, loving relationship and enough money to live comfortably. Their only disappointment is Beth's miscarriages. Mixed with her pain and guilt of the children she's lost is the guilt she's carried about her sister's death. A tragic accident that destroyed her family.

Things have finally turned around and Beth is pregnant again. This time will be different. And all is perfect....until a stalker begins to leave their terrifying messages. A wreath she'd left on her sister's grave above her bed, knife in her pillow and blood red RIP messages. Beth begins to unravel and turns to her best friend Kim for comfort shutting out and even suspecting her husband.

Who is the stalker? Why are they doing this?

Questions plague her as tragedy strikes over and over ripping apart the very fabric of the life they'd built together. How well do we really know anyone?

A riveting read that will keep you turning pages.

It was obvious from the first few chapters who the stalker was. I kept hoping for a twist but it never came. It was also one of these books where the villain spends way too long explaining their motives to the victim, giving the victim time to escape at the last moment *sigh, eye roll*

The stalker's reasoning was idiotic as were the multitude of plot holes such as the police not doing a background check on all the key people, or the police leaving Beth at home to take calls from the stalker after David was kidnapped, or actually just everything the police didn't do.

The characters were 2 dimensional and stereotypical and most of their actions made no sense. Beth has had 3 miscarriages yet she drinks, takes steaming hot baths, never eats, drinks dozens of coffees a day, and ignores spotting and cramping. Sure *another eye-roll*

I don't believe for one moment that the slow dim-witted Kim would have bested big strong ex-army Roy. Why did David stay at a motel without telling anybody? Beth is so easily suggestible that she believes the worst about her husband just because her best friend (who she barely even knows) suggests it but then suddenly hates her for no reason when Roy shows up?

It really pissed me off that the author felt the need to have Kim shoving food into her face every second page. Yes, mate, we get it, you want to point out that she's over weight because... oh right, its got no relevance to anything in the plot *sigh, more eye-rolling*

And the "let's spend Johnno's money, let's spent David's money" got old really fast. It's like the author either doesn't like women, or has never had any experience with them. This book was dreadful.

A complete break away from what Mark normally writes, but as a naturally talented writer this is no issue.
Beth is pregnant for the 4th time after 3 miscarriages and is looking forward to announcing the news at Christmas, everything is going fine until she arrives home one evening to find her dreamcatcher burnt and the wreath from her dead sisters grave hung above her bed, a knife through her pillow.
So begins a journey of psychological torment, leaving Beth to question everything she's ever known, and wondering who she could trust.
The mysterious woman that befriended her at the library, her husband, both seem likely candidates but at the same time are often both present when incidents happen making you wonder what on earth and who else it could be.
The suspense level is kept up throughout. One of the great things is that you never know what or where the next threat will come from, leaving you tense throughout. This is a massive compliment to the writer in being able to achieve this, and so successfully, especially when your heart is pounding at the same time!
I managed to read this book in just over a day, as I had to find out what happened. I'm glad I did and I thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend.

Yet another gripping and fast paced offering from Mark Tilbury as we meet Beth who is in the early stages of pregnancy with a job she loves and a loving husband. She's also become the attention of a stalker after finding a wreath from her sisters grave hanging above her bed! As the incidents become more intense, cracks and distrust start to appear in her marriage as she tries to get to grips with why she's being targeted.
Whilst not as gruesome as previous offering from Mark Tilbury, this whodunit and whydunnit is equally disturbing as Beth's world gradually unravels. There are very few characters and a straight forward storyline (which I certainly appreciated) which ultimately is about guilt, trust and secrets. Highly recommended!

This is another fantastic read by this author. I was literally gripped from start to finish.

Beth is pregnant and happily married. When she returns home after a meal her life is about to change and not in a good way.

A campaign of terror begins on Beth as she doesn’t know who to trust or believe.

Who is out to get her and why?

A brilliant read with some great twists and turns. Although I predicted some there was other twists that had me mentally high fiving the author.

Beth leads a quiet life, married to financial advisor David, working at the library and enjoying the occasional coffee and cake with a friend. She has no reason not to trust people. The only thing clouding her horizon is the thought that her eight week old pregnancy could turn into another in a series of miscarriages she has already suffered. Stress and upset are the last things she needs right now but someone else has other ideas and begins to make her life a living hell. And it appears that this person is very close to Beth since it seems they can access her home and have a knowledge of her past. There are a lot of psychological thrillers hitting the market at the moment so in order to stand out it needs to be something special - and this one, from a master story teller, really makes the grade. On starting the book I was tempted to say that it was nowhere near as creepy or blood thirsty as some of the other books from this author. Then things turned dark. Very dark. I spent the first half of the book having my own ideas about who the tormentor was but every so often the story twisted and gave me good reason to doubt my thinking. As it progresses to the final chapters we find much more about the motives behind the events taking place, and a lot of things slot into place as the story heads towards its chilling finale. Definitely a book the reader won't want to put down once started! 5*

Mark Tilbury delivers the most evil of characters, and Torment is no exception, apart from the fact in this story the malefactor is hidden to us for the largest part of the book and not revealed to the victim until near the end.
Beth Cruickshank, an inoffensive librarian, who because of her sweet nature doesn't seem to have ever had an enemy in the world becomes subject to a campaign of terror from somebody who is feeding on her bad memories of when her sister was tragically killed on a zebra crossing twenty years ago, and also more recently of the three previous miscarriages she has suffered when she so desperately wanted a child with her husband David. She is pregnant again when she finds someone has broken into her house and has left a cryptic sinister message for her, and she is soon to realise as the threat level increases that her life is very much in danger. She turns to her friend Kim Holden, who has problems of her own and invites Kim to move into the marital home so that they may support each other. All of which puts a strain on what was once for her a perfect marriage.
I read this book in less than twenty-four hours, totally absorbed in this tale of escalating terror.

Beth is the main character and is currently pregnant again following past miscarriages. Along with her husband David they are looking forward to the pregnancy and life seems good for them. That is until they arrive home one day to find a wreath from her sisters grave hanging above their bed. This is the start of a very different life to what they planned.

The ensuing story is a very detailed and disturbing tale and highlights just how much havoc things like that have on a person and how their life is truly affected. In this case Beth becomes almost a different person. As the story progresses the tension seems to up a notch with every single day that passes and another event happens. Before too long I think I had suspected every character in this book of being the culprit but that's the beauty of this book, is that you (and Beth) are never quite sure.

I have never read Mark Tilbury before but this was certainly a page turner for me and I will most definitely be looking out for books of his in the future.

Wow, another great read from this brilliant author, I couldn't read this book fast enough. How could someone try to ruin the lives of such a lovely couple? when all they wanted was a happy family life with a child of their own to love. Beth was horrified when she realised that someone hated her enough to invade her home and do unspeakable things which brought back memories of the horrifying death of her sister. Her husband David tried to comfort her but she seemed to be relying more and more on her friend Kim and even asked her to move in when Kim had relationship problems with a bully of a boyfriend. This was just the start of more serious and sinister events. If you love a nail-biting thriller then this is just the book for you.

Beth and David are a happily married couple who long for a child, when they suddenly become the victims of a campaign of terror. Who could possibly hate them so much? Neither of them have any obvious enemies but somebody has it in for them and bad things are happening. Now their loving relationship is under serious threat. I devoured this book in almost one sitting as I needed the answer! This is yet another winning read from Mark Tilbury. It will keep you reading past your bedtime.

Not a who done it, more a how and why , and how one event can impact on so many lives.
A disturbing read that had me thinking about the lengths that someone will go to for revenge, and also about home security, and how lax we are.

i spent the whole book saying no, no, no! and shaking me head, due to exasperation. I really enjoyed it.

Bit of a slow start, unusual for a Tilbury book, but once it gets going, it's a steamrolling, cracking good read, with the usual author's flare for twists and turns, culminating with a climactic finish.

A little bit creepy, it’s a bit horrific and that’s a bit predictable. Sadly I figured out the plot early on otherwise it would’ve been really good book but it sort of became obvious as this theme has been done several times but this was well done anyway

I have been a fan of Mark’s work for a couple of months. In fact I became a fan of his when I had the good fortune to be invited to take part in the blog tour for his last book. I read the synopsis for ‘Torment’ and it certainly sounded like just my kind of read- a psychological thriller with a twist. I eagerly started to read and oh boy I was not to be disappointed. ‘Torment’ is one hell of a read that I thoroughly enjoyed, but more about that in a bit.
I don’t know what to make of Beth, who is the main female character in this book. I kept changing my mind about her and alternated between wanting to slap her and wanting to give her a hug. I really did feel for her as regards her desperation for a baby and the fact that she had had a couple of miscarriages, which had made her super nervous about her current pregnancy. I haven’t had a baby or a miscarriage but somebody close to me has and I know how the failed pregnancies affected them, so I could see where Beth was coming from in that sense. However I did think that Beth was a bit too trusting and naïve where people were concerned. A certain person, claiming to be her friend, displays some behaviours that she knows will fire up Beth’s paranoia, will make her (Beth) feel very unsettled and Beth will see dangers where they aren’t any or they are not as bad as Beth thinks they are. In other words, Beth will be catastrophising. (I hope that I have spelt that word correctly). Beth ends up afraid of her own shadow and incredibly jumpy which is completely understandable. I do think that Beth is very gullible too and that is when she made me want to slap her with a wet flip flop.
Oh my , Mark has done it again and written one hell of a book that I just couldn’t put down. The book wasn’t exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I was totally gripped by the story and on the edge of my seat throughout the story. Reading ‘Torment’ became a serious addiction and I was like an addict in constant need of her next fix. If I had to put the book to one side then I would immediately look forward to being able to pick the book up again. I found every excuse under the sun to avoid having to move out of my favourite reading spot. I had to keep reading to see how the story panned out, to see whether or not Beth would have the baby she was so desperate for and whether or not a certain individual was found out or not. The pages turned increasingly quickly as my desperation to find out what happened grew. I managed to binge read the book over the course of a day and evening, which is pretty good going for me. Usually I have the attention span of a gnat and I am easily distracted but not in this case. My sole focus was on the book and I was able to shut out all other distractions.
‘Torment’ is superbly written but then I wouldn’t expect anything else from Mark Tilbury. He certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start and he reels you in. Once he has your attention, he won’t let it go until the end of the story. For me, the book was perfectly paced- a bit on the slow side to start with but then the tension built and built until a tense and dramatic conclusion towards the end of the book. Mark described the characters so well and so realistically that they seemed to be just as real as you or I. I felt like I was a character in the book at one point and I felt as though I was ‘living’ the story. Yes before anybody shouts, I know that this book is fiction and therefore not real but I find that if I enjoy a book as much as I enjoyed ‘Torment’, I tend to live the story as if it is real.
Reading ‘Torment’ was much like being on a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with lots of twists and turns along the way. If you want a book that will make your blood pressure soar, your heart rate increasing and your nervousness rising then ‘Torment’ is the book for you. There were times whilst reading this book that I found myself holding my breath in anticipation of what was going to happen next.
In short, Mark Tilbury has done it again and written one hell of a book that is destined for the bestseller charts and that is nothing less than he deserves. I can’t wait to read what he comes up with next. Here’s hoping that we don’t have too long to wait. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
