This is one of those books which immersed me in a completely different world while I was reading, and when I was done, I felt a little sad, as if I had lost some people. I could feel so closely for all the characters.
Acharya Chatursen mentioned in the prologue that despite writing several books, he'd consider this one as the sole work of his. This was his masterpiece and he has done full justice to it. The plot is well researched (as good as it gets), and serves as a good reference for anyone interested in India during the Vedic ages. The geography, political scene, socioeconomic, religious and cultural aspects of that era have been described very realistically. One cannot help but wonder at the wealth and splendor of the kingdoms and republics alike, and yet cringe at the society rigidly divided on the basis of caste or race.
The beauty of this book is its language. Language and Acharya Chatursen's attention to details while trying to be as factually correct about the setup make this plot so intriguing, interesting and alive.
Unfortunately, language is also what makes this book a little difficult to read. I must admit, I didn't understand many words which seem to originate from Sanskrit. As a reader, I feel I am being unfair to the author when I don't absorb every word and every sentence written in the book. Sadly, I couldn't find the meanings of several words even on the internet. And so I couldn't understand many sentences and have definitely missed out many expressions and connotations that rely on a language.
I'd recommend this to everyone who's interested in Indian history, and it'd be best if it's read in its original language.

When I think of Hindi literature, except the mandatory school readings, I have only read Premchand's work. Even while exploring Indian historical fiction, I tend to find & automatically read works in English (ease of language i guess) and that also mostly happen to be by foreign authors. I never considered looking for hindi novels before this. Ponniyin Selvan changed this for me. I am bilingual and unfortunately couldn't read that in Tamil, my loss.. but it led to an urge to find out interesting reads in Indian languages which lead me to 'Vaishali ki Nagarvadhu'.
Whatever I write about this book will not do justice to the masterpiece it is. I listened to this book in Hindi on Audible, narration by Ashish Bhandari was superb. Acharya Chatursen considers this book as his greatest work, he spent a decade writing this involving years of research which clearly shows in his writing. Going by the title, I could have never guessed this book to be so rich in history. The plot is immersive and kept me captivated even till the last page transporting me to the ancient India of 5th century BC. One gets a good understanding of the social & political scene, the religious and cultural facet of that time. We see the birth of both Buddhism and Jainism in that period. The social and religious divide is very prominent and its interesting to see monarchy (Magadh) and republic (Vaishali) running in parallel in neighboring kingdoms.
The book starts with the story of Amrapali, the protagonist, for whom her beauty becomes her curse when she is found out to be too beautiful to be wife of just one person and was lawfully forced into courtesanship, married to all in the kingdom. We get to see the derogatory mindset of a lustful male society here who gave her everything she asked for to make her a courtesan. She was richer than the kingdom itself with hold over powerful men & kings themselves.
Amrapali is but just one part of this epic. There are numerous characters of equal importance with parallel stories running which gets slightly confusing at times so I had to go little back and forth, which I found to be little difficult in audio book. I am thinking of getting its hard copy for re-reading.
This is a must read for all history and fiction lovers. I can't recommend this book enough. Best read in Hindi I believe.

The book is pretty good except for following points.
1. Abundant usage of difficult Hindi words. English dictionary or Wikipedia was of no help.
2. It doesn't have any pictorial representation or map to show kingdoms, cities and boundaries. You will have to go back and forth between Wikipedia and book. Even the Wikipedia doesn't have a good map of sixteen Mahajanpad of ancient India. So, it's left to your imagination.
3. There are arbitrary jump in narration at few places. I'm not giving examples to avoid spoilers.
4. Some of the subplots are left unresolved.
5. Couple of chapters feel like out of place. It's not adding anything to the plot line.

I think what author mentioned in introduction is true. I have not read such a great work of historical fiction till date. I mark it one of my best read book in Hindi literature.
A must read.
A must read.

I vaguely remember attending a play on the life of King Bimbisara of Magadha when I was in high school. I don't remember the story, I certainly don't remember the actors. But I do remember a dance sequence in the play performed by the character of Amrapali, and the haunting lyrics of the background score - so rahi hai Vaishali, jaag rahi hai Amrapali (Vaishali sleeps while Amrapali awakens).
That memory of a long forgotten past (pardon my melodramatic expression) was probably the reason I decided to read Vaishali Ki Nagarvadhu. And I wasn’t disappointed.
Acharya Chatursen weaves a magnificent landscape with his pen. The landscape happens to be that of ancient India - which is at once beautiful and frightening; which is a land of wars, conspiracies, betrayals and usurpation; where the realism transcends reality; where the men with swords command the maximum respect and yet they bow before the wise. And in the midst of these stands Amrapali.
The story is about Amrapali who was found in the woods of Vaishali as an infant and adopted by a member of the royal guard. She grows up to be the most beautiful woman of the kingdom. She is courted by the members of the aristocracy, peerless warriors, wealthy landlords. But she wants neither the riches nor the power, she wants only the simple pleasures of life which most of us take for granted - she wants a husband, she wants a home, she wants to be a mother.
Her dreams are shattered when she is elected to be a nagarvadhu (literally, bride of the kingdom). She becomes a royal courtesan, not belonging to one man but to many, prohibited to marry or to have children. Anybody who was rich could own her for a few hours by paying an obscene amount of gold. And thenceforth begins the saga of her life as she grows accustomed to her new role, her turbulent and forbidden love affair with King Bimbisara of Magadh, and the central role played by her in the destruction of the clan of Lichavis.

Writing the foreword of this magnum opus of his, Acharya Chatursen wrote in 1949 that during the previous 40 years, he had written 84 books on various subjects and more than 10000 pages of his writings had been published in different magazines. He wished to cancel all his previous writings and declared that this book be considered his first writing!
It is believed he spent more than a decade researching Aryan, Buddhist, Jain and Hindu literature to gather his material.
The story of the courtesan Ambapali is an important thread of VKNW. Because of her beguiling beauty, Ambapali becomes the victim of the pernicious practice of the Vajjis of declaring the most beautiful girl of her time the Nagar Wadhu. She could not marry and must be available for any citizen who could afford her price, which she was at liberty to set.
On the other hand, the Magadhan Emperor Bimbisara is so besotted by her beauty that he decides to risk his very throne to marry this courtesan from Vaishali who were his declared enemy and to make Ambapali his chief consort. To get her Bimbisara launches a deadly battle against the Vajji Confederacy that wages for 10 days and in which 96 lac people die. But Ambapali is so aghast at the price that she has had to pay for her beauty that she wants to give it all up and join Buddha’s sangha.
In the 6th century BCE, the Vajjis were a republic with their capital at Vaishali, just across the Ganga from modern Patna. They formed a confederacy of eight republican clans, led by the Lichchavis of Vaishali. It was a strong and wealthy confederacy which not only Magadh, but also other kingdoms like Anga, Koshal and Kashi had repeatedly tried to invade but failed.
But this lengthy book (585 pages) is not just the story of Vaishali. It has the story of Gautam Buddha and Mahavir. It deals with the ideological clash between the Brahmins and the Buddhists. And even within the Hindu belief system, there is bitter antagonism between the old order that believes in sacrifices and rituals and the followers of the new concept of Brahm who is formless (Nirakar) and attribute-less (Nirgun) and for whom sacrifices and rituals hold no meaning. New castes were forming with the conquest of newer areas and the intermingling of the original varnas and these emerging castes were rising against the dominance of the Brahmins and Kshatriyas. The reader is rewarded with a vision of all these strands of our ancient history.
There is even a chapter where students from different parts of India and neighbouring countries sit with an Acharya in Magadh and discuss with him the laws of nuclear physics and link it to their understanding of life & death.
The canvas of this well- researched book is so vast that it would make no sense to talk about its contents in a review of this sort.
Instead, I will share a few excerpts to give you the flavour of VKNW-
In my opinion, there is this one big drawback of the book: its language. In almost every sentence I found a word or two that I didn't know the meaning of. Did the writer resort to such 'klisht' Hindi to build the right atmosphere for those times? Whatever his motive, I think obsessive use of difficult language will discourage most readers today from picking up this book.

This is not an easy book but this is definitely a book that needs to be read. Hindi is a bit difficult to comprehend and at times I had to refer notes or google the meaning but it was well worth it.
Personally I still prefer वयमः राक्षामः over this but then Acharya Chatursen himself said that - “मैं अब तक की अपनी सारी रचनाओं को रद्द करता हूँ और 'वैशाली की नगरवधू' को अपनी एकमात्र रचना घोषित करता हूँ।"
So do keep it in your collection and read it because only a genius could have penned a book of this stature.

good book if you had'nt read book like Mrityunjay, Yayati and Shriman yogi.....being a true reviewer the way "Acharya Chatursen" wrote beauty of 'Nagarvadhu' and some romantic conversation is charming ,most important is exotic conversation and some love scene.....but from my perspective these is not only about beauty of amrapali........but it involve many thing like bravery of somprabh ..... politics of varshkarma. The way writer depicted ancient time(about 2500 year ago)the scene ,way people fight ,prostitute, how people greet each other e.tc are awesome.
but there is nothing like Buddhism and Jainism in these book, if you are looking for a book which take you on spritual journey ...then these book had nothing like these, only 4-5 chapter related to "Bhagwan Buddha" and "Bhagwan Mahavir"...and truthfully those chapter are too boring
there are lot of unnecessary Character and Stories in these book,
these book is not like what i am expecting....or may be my taste is different ,thats why i am going 3/5 for these.

Vaishali was first democratic kingdom(around 2500 years back) of North India. It is contemporary to Lord Buddha. Chatursen claims that Novel is written after good amount of research and truly explains the society at that time. It story about Ambapali a very beautiful or let us say most beautiful in whole kingdom. Novel starts with her father is moving to some other place with her and also worried about people not noticing her beautiful daughter otherwise he know that they will claim her as Nagarvadhu. Anyway she becomes nagarvadhu but after some time she leaves it when she comes to know about Buddhism spirituality.

Probably one the most difficult but enjoyable and immersive books I have read in a long time. It's technically historical fiction but certainly heavy in history. क्लिष्ठ hindi and liberal use of figures of speech makes this an experience 🤣
Wikipedia, google maps and hindi dictionary needed to really appreciate the true expansiveness, depth and genius of this story. Acharya Chatursen must have deep expertise in History, geography, polity, diplomacy, war tactics, alchemy, religion, philosophy, spirituality, grammer and vocabulary to produce this tour de force.
Game of thrones, history and mini hindi language immersion all rolled into one 😀

Listened to this one in audible and I must say the narration by Ashish Bhandari is excellent. This is one of its kind Novel by Acharya Chatursen, I am no one to comment on his great writing. Enjoyed listening to it. Since it is an Indian history novel and in hindi I could relate and understand even better.

Highly recommended।

Aacharya Chatursen had such great material at his disposal: the Buddha , a fabulous concubine for Vaishali, fascinating history of ancient India , and even Mahavira . He wasted his time in describing the battles, dabbling in racism of sorts ( he’s gleeful in physical fairness of his heroes ) , in casteism : the issues that small minds can’t transcend as these were part of his zeitgeist .
I do miss what the book could have been if the interaction between the Buddha and Ambpaali was enlarged upon . I wish …..

This book is unlike anything I've ever read, and I've read a lot. But nothing comes even close to this book in richness of language, characterisation and vastness of canvas. The vibrant culture, mysticism, rich philosophy, splendour and contradictions of Indian society in 7th Century BC come alive from the quill of Acharya Chatursen Shashtri. Must read for all lovers of Hindi literature and Indian history.

Finally, I finished reading this book. I kept leaving it and then coming back to it. It has an interesting premise. A peek into the glorious ancient India, the story is centred around Vaishali Ganarajya, world’s oldest republic. The decisions were taken by consensus here as against the Monarchy like Magadh which was governed by the king. A state in all its glory and abundance, it suffered from the ills of overindulgence. The story revels in the interstate rivalry and proxy wars. Some excellent statecraft reflected here.
It was difficult reading the book because the language was straight from the ancient texts, barely translated. Some of the prose looked like it was translated verbatim. Especially those related to Buddha and Mahavir Jain. Some footnotes could be helpful. The book could use some serious editing. However, the story itself, spanning kingdoms and republics was full of intrigue. Interesting characters including Vishkanya, scientists Rishi, Aghori etc made the book exciting in parts. If only the language was captivating!
The striking part of the book was the attempt to describe the daily life of common people of the Ancient India. It transported the reader in to that era. Farmers, barbers, slaves, all were described. A very rich civilisation indeed complete with its foreign diplomatic connections. The ancient India wasn’t much different from the current democratic India, where inequalities exist, but they are also fluid, changing with the times.
A dive into the glorious oral history of our country, the book was worth all the effort. Glad I could finish it, even though the ending was a bit of blah.

This is book is a classic, no doubt. But the writer should be clear about whose story he or she wants to tell. The title is not apt. The story doesn't stay with Amrapali. It frequently moves to different Janapadas and different characters. Amrapali is not the only protagonist of this book.
Another drawback of this book is that there are so many characters. The reader cannot keep track of all of them.
Third point is that the novel is not historically accurate.
However, after all the above drawbacks the book is study record of that period. It shows the research of the author. His dedication to the work. The twists are to be applauded. The taste of human emotions, sweetness of philosophical teachings and bitterness of political intrigues is there.
Some of the main characters would make you care for them. The narrative doesn't coil up when it's time to say something dark for the common mind. The tale gets dark as it can in those times.
I am cutting one star only because I was reading this book to know Amrapali not for the saga of India of that period. The author should've titled it differently. That's all.

Worth reading an epic in superb Hindi by a master Hindi author
Very well done.
This really is the topmost creation of the author. He has poured all his talent of writing in this unique historical - fiction . I have no words to comment on his superb command on highest Hindi language composition. I bow to his intense and through research on people , socio-politics, culture and Dharmic philosphies of that era.
Wherever it was possible he has openly written about ills of certain rituals , faiths and conflicting sociopolitical practices of that era which may be seen clearly even now not only in that part of Bharat then, but also in other societies of different countries. The 1966 film adoption of the story in the book ‘ AMRAPALI’ a hindi movie directed by Lekh Tondon seems to have picked up only few themes of this historical fiction with mixed reviews.

Vaishali Ki Nagarvadhu by Acharya Chatursen is certainly a gem in Hindi literature, supplying an extremely good story set in historic India. It's without a doubt one of the best books I've ever read. The tale of Amrapali, the courtesan of Vaishali, is certainly captivating. My most effective gripe is that there are a lot of characters, which could get difficult at instances. Despite that, I highly recommend this book for its wealthy storytelling and vivid portrayal of historic settings.

Very smooth writing, pacy, very beautiful expression.
But hindi is difficult, thanks to ai translate but some words still couldn't and the process in itself is tedious.
Possibly historically inaccurate, but in its defense, it is atleast part historical fiction.
It was more about Vaishali than about Amrapali.
But, this deserves the repute of exemplary work. Beautifully written.
If you know the kind of Hindi, this won't let you stop even for a minute.

This book is very rich in literature, culture, plot, characters, everything that historical fiction needs. Reading it in this age feels like discovering your very own Game of thrones written decades ago in an even older era. Brilliant writing that gives a lot of perspective on politics, different ruling styles, how society evolved while rise of different sects happened fulfilling a natural void in said society. Beautifully executed.
