Rate this book

Take two co workers who apparently can't stand each other,a blizzard which leaves them stranded in a sleepy village in the beautiful Lake District, some delightful residents and you have a charming Christmas story.

Patrick isn't looking forward to spending Christmas alone but the last thing he was expecting was to spend it with Kyle but that's exactly what happens when Kyle's car breaks down a few days before Christmas on their way back from a work meeting. It seems 'there's no room at the Inn' is quite fitting as the only option for them is to rent a half finished cottage owned by a local.

The two men might not have got along at work but it turns out they've both had a simmering attraction to each other,so why not have some festive fun under the covers? The sex is HOT but they quickly realize they might just have a future together.

I loved the charming setting and a snowed in theme is one of my favourite things and the Author got the Christmas atmosphere just right...it was delightful. The Epilogue finished the story of perfectly.

Patrick and Kyle are new colleagues, but there's no love lost between them.

Patrick is messy to Kyle's orderly. He's seven years older than Kyle and despises Grindr, of which Kyle seems inordinately fond.

Kyle is snarky, high maintenance, and flirty. Patrick is not.

Patrick dresses for the weather. Kyle does not.

On the surface, the men are nothing alike, but they've both been betrayed; they understand hurt and loneliness.

When they get snowed in on a business trip, they make do with wine, cheese, biscuits, and dinner at a pub. They help out an elderly woman (who lends out her cottage, a remodeled pigsty, so they have somewhere to stay until the weather clears) and realize that sometimes opposites do attract.

The weather may be cold, but the sex is HAWT. Hello, spanking kink! Patrick is obsessed with Kyle's arse and puts his Christmas present to good use.

This is not a complicated story; it's filled with quiet moments, awkward moments, and moments of utter contentment.

I'm a fan of the snowed-in trope, and it's done well here. The MCs are forced to share a bed and kiss under a mistletoe. Is there a better recipe for romance?

These guys bring out the best in each other, even if they're afraid to try. Kyle's attempt at making Patrick jealous backfires big time. And Patrick jumps to false conclusions. Can they kiss and make up?

I read this book in one sitting, like I do most of Jay's stories. His writing style really appeals to me. It's breezy and effortless.

I adored Mrs. Wilcox and Dex, her fierce German shepherd. The ending is a heartwarming HEA, complete with family found and promises kept.

This is my 2018 Christmas novella. It came in a little longer than usual at 53,000 words, which wasn't super convenient given that life stuff meant I ran really close to my deadline. But the characters needed those extra words to get their shit together.

After a panicked start, I enjoyed writing this one. I've never written a story where the characters argue so much before, so it was challenging but a lot of fun. The enemies-to-lovers trope was a new one for me to tackle, and I feel like I gave it my best shot. If you decide to read it, I hope you'll end up loving Patrick and Kyle as much as I do :)

Not my favorite Jay Northcote read. I just didn’t find Kyle very likable.

The transition from enemies to lovers was done pretty well.

The spanking was....interesting.

I don’t know, it was okay. I liked it but I didn’t love it.

This festive romance is as hot as the cover but also a superbly paced frenemies to lovers trope with the added bonus of a Christmas stranded together plot.

I loved prickly Mrs Wilcox, she of the mostly finished available to rent pigsty, and Mike the village shopkeeper with the kind of welcome which is often found in small villages.

The Lake District setting was a subtle one and it again worked well as the location for two disparate people to get stuck together and realise that opposites attract more than they expected.

And, speaking of expectations, I wasn't ready for the light kink but oh boy did I love it when it turned up.
Although, on the face of it, Kyle being twinkish and Patrick all dominant might have seemed obvious, it actually evolved beautiful and unexpectedly in the narrative.

I always love Jay's festive romances and this was no exception.

I usually avoid stories where the characters are trapped together and by the time they are free again they have found true love forever, but for this one I had to make an exception because of the author.

I'm always enjoying Jay Northcote's stories and this one didn't disappoint. For some reason, even though everything happened in less than a week, it didn't feel rushed or like I was reading an insta-love story. It's worth mentioning here that we also have an enemies-to-lovers trope (okay maybe just heavy dislike) and it still worked! How is it possible?!

We have co-workers Patrick and Kyle with the former training the newbie later. There is no love lost between them and they can barely stand each other. When their boss sends them on a work trip just before the holidays they go thinking that it would only be two days and then they can be rid of the other until next year. Kyle's car though had other plans and it broke down in the middle of nowhere on their way back so they ended up spending a few days (Christmas day included) in a small town waiting for the car to be fixed.

The attraction doesn't take long to make an appearance but they have both been hurt in the past and even though they are dealing with it in different ways the result is the same: they are reluctant to take a chance again.

It's really good light read with little to no angst, but I wouldn't say it's fluff. There are no big declarations and no cheesy phrases. The development felt real and the way they gave each other a chance and little by little left first impressions behind and started really getting to know the person within was satisfying.

Close quarters, bad weather, quirky and kind people and an energetic dog that is always game for a walk help change their minds and by the end of their holiday adventure nothing is the same.

-Enemies to lovers
-Forced proximity
-Some naughty spanking
-Opposites attract

All the things that I love, but I didn't connect with. Stuck with You by Jay Northcote was just okay for me.

As for the characters, I did like Patrick; I had a hard time with Kyle. There was something about his personality that made him across as a bit of a turd. It took most of the book to warm up to him, and by the time I did, it was a little too late.

The relationship development had a nice pace; it didn't feel rushed.

BUT the sex scenes- they were a little uncomfortable. It felt awkward. Maybe they were meant to be seeing as they disliked each other at the start? I don't know.

I think it's a case of "me and not the book." The writing wasn't bad, and the story was cute, it just wasn't a slam dunk for me.

Some feuding-colleagues-to-lovers with a side of kink and holiday feels? Yes please!

description

Since breaking things off with his cheating ex, Patrick has been living a lonely life. To make matters worse, he has to put up with his annoying younger mentee.

Kyle is the opposite of Patrick - an outgoing party animal who prefers hookups over relationships. He knows Patrick finds him annoying, but he finds his tight-laced mentor equally insufferable.

I thought Kyle was a riot. He’s a total brat, but the kind you can’t help but love.

And Patrick would seem to agree.

When the two are snowed in together in a remote English village, it doesn’t take long for them to butt heads.

But the anger’s just hiding a different kind of tension - one that the two MCs begin exploring pretty quickly.

Let me just say - Kyle and Patrick are hot, hot, hot. The light kink was unexpected, but totally welcome!

description

While the snow rages outside and our two MCs find creative ways to get warm and cozy, their mutual dislike gradually melts away.

I really liked seeing how their assumptions of each other were challenged. Patrick realizes that despite Kyle’s antics, he has a heart of gold. And Kyle comes to appreciate why Patrick’s

And best of all, the two let themselves be vulnerable around each other. I won’t lie, I may have swooned a little bit.

Of course, not all is automatic sunshine and roses, but the happy ever after was perfect.

I also really liked the secondary character of Mrs. Wilcox.

Overall, ‘Stuck With You’ hit a lot of high notes for me, with a sweet and steamy romance and a strong dose of holiday cheer, and all of it in a quaint English country village. Recommended!

That was such a delight!

I loved everything about this:

Patrick and Kyle are colleagues, with Patrick being 7 years older and Kyle's mentor (it is a mini 'age gap' but I liked it.)
Patrick sees Kyle as a spoilt child and hates his Grindr habit.
Kyle thinks Patrick is stuck up and boring.
So no wonder they don't get on. Until they get suck in snow and ice in a small village in the Lake District in the north of England.

I enjoyed the scenario immensely because I can virtually see that little village shop, that pub, that ice-cold holiday flat right in front of my eyes. And it felt real in many ways.
I certainly loved the verbal sparring between the MCs, their gradual (emotional and literal) thawing and all the Christmas vibes surrounding the story. (Ms.Wilcox and Dex!)

However I was taken completely by surprise by the kink! (and so were the MCs lol) And what a good surprise that was. These guys sizzled fabulously together (and with all that cold around it was just as well!)

Highly recommend this! It is a lovely and hot Christmas romance!

Overall I enjoyed Stuck With You. Jay has an easy-to-read writing style that I love.

But I did find Kyle very hard to warm up to. He was a bit of a brat, and not in the cute playful way. He came off as a conceited party boy who spends too much time on Grindr. I didn't really understand what Patrick saw in him. Once he let his guard down, I grew to like him a little more.

Jay did a great job moving Kyle and Patrick from enemies to lovers. Throw in a wise old woman from next door, her loyal German Shepard, and a heartwarming epilogue, and you've got yourself a nice holiday read.

Awkward....2.5 Stars......

Well, I wanted to like this story. I was ready to like this story. Enemy to lovers? Sign me up! Snowed in? Excellent! Spanking? Even better!

The thing is....I didn't like the story. Something about it was off. Something about it it was solidly "meh." Like a day old ham and mayo sandwich. It's probably OK, the mayo might dodgy, but overall definitely underwhelming.

I didn't feel a connection between the characters. Their fights and banter were not entertaining. Everything felt superficial. Their spanking kink and role playing was awkward and felt forced.

Parts of this novella were OK. But that's just it...parts. as a whole it didn't work. I like this author and have enjoyed the Housemates series. This is the second Christmas novella of Northcote's that I've read and it's the second that I didn't like. Maybe there is a theme here. I think I'll avoid further Christmas stories by this author for the time being.

ARC provided by the publisher through Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words in exchange for an impartial review.

From the first chapters, the animosity between Kyle and Patrick intrigued me. Patrick is Kyle’s mentor at their job, and the slightly older man is the responsible type—very serious and focused. Kyle, on the other hand, is good at his job but dresses a bit more outlandishly, flirts, and seems to take life a lot more lightly than Patrick. When the two get stuck in the snow on their way back from a business trip in the Lake District, their differences are much more apparent.

Patrick gets out his winter coat, hat, gloves, and boots, while Kyle has to make it to the nearest village in a lightweight dress jacket, no hat or gloves, and his dress boots. After Patrick saves his butt—literally—as he falls a few times on the trip to the nearest village, the setup of their basic differences is sealed.

And yet, the two strangely connect, and when Patrick threatens to spank Kyle, and Kyle’s brows rise in anticipation, the storyline takes a positive turn. Though they have sex that night in the small rental shed (former pigsty) they located, the relationship and ultimate romance takes a while to build. And though the story takes place over the course of several days, the author takes the time to allow them to get to know one another and to develop feelings that go beyond attraction. There’s not much else to do but talk…and spank…and…celebrate Christmas together with the elderly landlady and her dog.

This is quite a heartwarming tale, with a focus on togetherness and family of choice during the holidays. It’s also interesting, with great characters, beautiful scenery, and an easily believable story. Jay Northcote always delivers a smile to my face and a warmth to my heart. This one is no exception.

Reading Jay Northcote Christmas stories has become a Christmas tradition for me, this is my third December falling in love with some wonderful stories and Stuck with You is my favourite Christmas read this month.

Stuck with You was a wonderful surprise for me, I did not know what to expect with Patrick and Kyle being colleagues who disliked each other so much.

I loved getting to know Patrick and Kyle with all their bickering making this a refreshing change from instalove and these two together are HOT not just the sex but I enjoyed the sarcasm as well, I'm surprised they did not melt all the snow.

I also enjoyed how they looked after Mrs Wilcox and how they became fast friends by the time they left.

I loved the spanking between these two let's just say it got my girly parts excited.

I highly recommend this if you love a m/m Christmas story, I need to read more Jay Northcote.

There are many things that I look forward to during the holidays and Jay’s annual story is most definitely one of them. Every year a new gift is delivered and this was another fantastic addition to his Christmas collection. This round we have a delicious dose of stark opposites and temptation that’s bound to catch fire. Which is a blessing since we’re snowed in. Patrick has been training his younger colleague at work and it hasn’t been going so well. They bicker and banter all day long. Which coincidentally has been a prolonged act of foreplay. They annoy and irritate each other but there’s also a fierce attraction (however denied it may be) that keeps them going. When a snowstorm forces them to take shelter in a cozy rental, both find themselves confronted with the hard truth. Things need to change. And the first modification is their relationship. But is this just a holiday fling? A circumstance of convenience? Or can they hold fast and…stick together?

What's to like: I’m always eager for Jay’s saucy mix and Patrick and Kyle tickled my fancy. Patrick is slightly older but much more…respectable. Well, he seems to think so. Kyle is younger, flippant, and addicted to his electronic extremity. Actually, it’s his link to hook-ups through the wondrous world of Grindr. He’s all about fashion and aesthetics and has no need for practical aspects of the world. And he won’t deny his playboy reputation. When Patrick wishes to stop for a hike in the Lake District he grudgingly agrees. But then the weather flips and suddenly they are…stuck. He’s not going home for Christmas, he’s not prepared for the bitter cold of Jack Frost, and doesn’t know how he’ll pass the time. Until…until he discovers his companion has layers, which he would like to peel away. In the process, he reveals a naughty tier that he is rather fond of. Of course, this is just dilly-dallying playing…right? Hmmm……

What's to love:
Although both men are quite different both have experienced heartbreak. Patrick hasn’t forgotten the harsh sting from his ex’s betrayal and Kyle is well versed in his own fair share of heartache. And besides, they are SO different they could never work out long-term. Leave it to Jay to prove otherwise. It’s no spoiler that this tale is smoking hot and ends with a banging good time smile. I loved the frosty Mrs. Wilcox and her trusty pup. I loved how they all came together as a temporary family. I loved the kickback feels that divulged into so much more. I just…loved it. It was sexy, sweet, and full of holiday cheer.

Beware of: A pair of contradictory yet compatible souls. A bit of spanking. And a wintry blast that brings two men together…in the most delightful way.

This book is for: If you are searching for a fun, sexy holiday treat…settle in, this is a lovely story that is sure to warm your heart.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

This is the sort of cozy Christmas story that warms the cockles of my heart. It’s charming and cute with enough snark and steam to keep the sweetness from being cloying. I think the author managed to evoke the feeling of being snug in a warm cabin while the world outside is covered in knee deep snow and the crankly old woman turned out to be a gentle matchmaker without being either a cliche or a joke.

Patrick and Kyle are very much oposites. Patrick’s a bit of a slob and Kyle likes things neat, even going so far as to tidy other people’s desks and kitchens for them given half the chance. Patrick likes the outdoors and Kyle likes his phone. And a chair to sit in while he’s on his phone. But, for all their differences, the two men are kindred spirits where it counts. When they discover their landlady needs a bit of help thanks to the sudden snowstorm, both man are quick to offer their help.

★★★★ — 4 Stars!

I enjoyed this novel. The Hate-to-Love trope is one of my favorite tropes and I think it was well executed in this novel. I enjoyed all of the characters except there was a portion where one of the characters wanted to play victim as if they didn’t do anything wrong when they did. And they never apologized for it. So for that reason I’m giving it four stars instead of five.

I've given this an A for narration and a B for content at AudioGals.

A snowed-in, forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers romance with snarky flirting, a small dollop of angst and Only One Bed? *rubs hands with glee* Count me in! Jay Northcote’s Stuck With You is a sexy, heart-warming tale about finding love and connection when – and with whom – you least expect it.

Patrick and Kyle work at the same medical supplies firm in the north of England, and Patrick, as a senior member of staff, has been Kyle’s mentor while he learns the ropes. The two men are polar opposites; Patrick is quiet and serious (Kyle thinks he’s boring) while Kyle is more outgoing and flamboyant (Patrick thinks he’s an immature party boy) , and they’ve rubbed each other the wrong way since day one. Both of them are thankful that Kyle’s time as Patrick’s mentee is coming to an end; in January, he’ll be flying solo.

But there’s one last meeting to be attended before they head off for the Christmas break, and as it’s a few hours’ drive away, they have to stay overnight at a hotel before heading home to Manchester the day before Christmas Eve. Meeting over and job done, they’re on the way back when Kyle’s car starts misbehaving and eventually breaks down; they’re on a small country road, the snow that was forecast for that night has arrived early and there’s fat chance of getting the AA out to repair or tow the car given the weather and how close it is to Christmas. They walk to the nearest village and enter the shop, where the owner tells them that the only guest house in the village is fully booked (so there’s no room at the inn!) but that he thinks maybe Mrs. Wilcox might be able to help them out; her son is renovating the outbuilding on her property to use as a holiday let and she might be able to offer them a bed for the night.

Patrick and Kyle follow the directions they’re given to Orchard Cottage and find that Mrs. Wilcox is indeed having some property renovated; the outbuilding actually used to be a pigsty and is very compact. It’s not quite finished and there’s only one bed (!), but the two men are so cold and tired that they agree to make do, hoping they’ll be able to make arrangements to leave in the morning.

Patrick and Kyle might not like each other, but there’s no denying the attraction that sizzles between them – no matter how unwanted it is. Kyle might be lovely to look at, but he teases and flirts and irritates the hell out of Patrick, and spends most of the time he’s not working on dating apps. He’s absolutely not Patrick’s type… and yet, Patrick can’t help stealing glances at him whenever he thinks Kyle isn’t looking. And Kyle is well aware that Patrick obviously likes what he sees when he looks at him and can even admit that Patrick is good-looking, in a sort of austere, repressed way – but he still can’t stand him. And anyway, Patrick has ‘serious’ written all over him and Kyle isn’t interested in anything beyond sex.

When Kyle suggests to Patrick that they find a way to ‘entertain’ themselves while they’re stuck with each other, Patrick is horrified and shuts him down right away. Later, though, he starts to wonder if maybe he’d been too hasty; Kyle is gorgeous, he’s obviously interested and Patrick hasn’t been with anyone in quite a while. The awkward atmosphere hanging between them starts to abate a little when they share a meal – and later, when Patrick makes a comment about Kyle needing to be spanked… things take an interesting (and slightly kinky) turn.

The sex is hot and amazing, but Patrick and Kyle aren’t really sure what to make of each other or the situation. However, close proximity has a way of paving the way for honesty and connection, and once the two men actually start to talk to each other and hang out together, their relationship begins to shift as they get to know the real person behind the irritating colleague. I’m not normally a fan of stories in which the characters jump into bed this quickly, but it works here because the author skilfully combines their developing sexual relationship (and their mutual exploration of an unexpected interest in kink) with their developing emotional one.

The Lake District setting makes a nice but subtle backdrop to the story, and while it takes place over Christmas – and the scenes in which they share Christmas Day with Mrs. Wilcox are lovely – there’s just enough festive spirit around without it being syrupy-sweet or overdone. The small secondary cast is well-drawn, and the relatively low-key conflict in the story makes sense when taken in the context of who these people are and what they’ve experienced. I appreciated that when Patrick and Kyle finally talk about the issue, they approach it like grown-ups and take the time to look at the situation from the other person’s perspective. And even though the story takes place over just a few days, Mr. Northcote creates a believable and satisfying connection between the two men and allows it time to grow. My main reservation overall is that Kyle is difficult to warm to because he’s such a brat; at the beginning of the story my sympathy was all with Patrick for having to put up with his immature behaviour, and it was a few chapters before I started to like him for his unapologetic honesty.

I’ve listened to a few of Hamish Long’s narrations in the past and have enjoyed them, but this is my first time listening to him in a Jay Northcote book. Mr. Long is an extremely experienced, highly accomplished narrator (he has well over two hundred titles to his credit under this name and his alter egos) and he delivers an excellent performance on all counts, using a variety of tone, accent and timbre to delineate each character in the story. He adopts a standard RP (Received Pronunciation) accent for Patrick, and a convincingly Mancunian one for Kyle; Patrick’s voice is lower pitched than Kyle’s and there’s a sternness to it that works well to describe the stuffiness Kyle sees in him – as well as during the sex scenes when they’re exploring Patrick’s desire to be in charge. Mr. Long’s female voices are really good, and I especially enjoyed his portrayal of the elderly Mrs. Wilcox, whose no-nonsense kindness comes through strongly. He really delivers when it comes to the emotional side of the story, too – the sex scenes are performed with confidence and conviction and the connection between the two leads is conveyed really well.

Stuck With You is a fun and sexy festive romance, brought vividly to life through Hamish Long’s excellent performance. Recommended.

Delightful Christmas romp of a novella by the dependable Jay Northcote about two co-workers stuck over Christmas in a snow-bound village. Patrick and Kyle have been at each other's throats at work so their boss sends them on a pre-Christmas business trip in the hopes that these opposites will get closer and stop their bickering.

Surprise: They do!

When Kyle’s car breaks down 2 days before Christmas, he and his coworker are stranded together until they are able to find someone to fix it. Over the course of 4 days, they give into their attraction, start seeing each other in a new light, and decide to try a relationship.

This was sexy, kinky (they discover a mutual love of spankings), and sweet. Apart from taking part over the Yule holiday, it’s embodies the spirit of Christmas, when a stranger offers them a room, and they pay her back by helping with chores and spend the holiday with her.

Two colleagues who can't stand each other get stranded in a small village for the Christmas holidays.
It's a nice read with some cozy moments involving an old lady and her dog.
The romance, a mutual dislike with secret attraction bursting into sex and then a promising relationship, overall felt real. Personally I found the moment they finally gave in to their attraction a bit awkward and later on the misunderstanding overdone.

I didn’t fall into this stranded coworkers story. I wasn’t a fan of Kyle, who I found to be somewhat of a jerk, for whatever the reason. I also thought it was too long.

Consigliato.
