Saints and Sinners is a clever and intriguing collection of short stories and novellas written by over a dozen authors. Most were new to me, but since it's a bunch of romantic interludes and Valentine's Day is heading right at us, I decided to read it over the last two weeks. Given the page count was ~1,000, I knew it would need more time than usual. It was a great way to intersperse my traditional mystery and thriller reading schedule with a couple of stories each night. Kudos to the authors and editors for pulling together a wide variety of characters, plots, and genres.
At the top of my list was Skinny Dippin' by Didi Oviatt. I've read some of her works previously, which initially drew me to this anthology, but I've found several new authors to watch in the coming year. In Skinny Dippin', a ~40ish single mother is offered a chance at an unexpected extended vacation, coordinated by those who know and love her best. For two decades, she's raised both her kids and focused on little else but work and them. Now, she's due for her own new experiences... and what better than a beach trip to house-sit for some family friends?
Less than 100 pages, this story gripped me from the beginning. Oviatt has a way of slowly drawing readers in with the right balance of background details, passion, and personalities. By the time the twins are done pushing their mother into the trip (and having their own relationship woes), she's already caught the attention of a younger suitor who appears to be distracted with his own problems. Blake might be a sinner or a saint; we can't quite tell. But his actions are causing a smoldering fire among all the woman vying for his attention. Oviatt shows us how our pasts can force us to see things differently, to hide or to not take risks. Love can hurt. People can lie. Girlfriends and husbands can cheat. Are second chances really possible? Wow! I enjoyed her story a lot... truly, I read it all in one setting because it flowed so well. You will immediately connect with it.
Many of the others were strong and brought a bunch of hot action, worrisome fears, and interesting situations. Between unruly sisters, devious plots, gentle love, and everything in between, the collection has a lot to offer. Skip around, read in order... either works. Absorbing this over a longer time period was a helpful balance to keep my mind connected to the theme but not overwhelmed by too much of it. It's inspiring to find new authors and writing styles. Give this one a chance!
This review is for Shamrock and Clover: Fields Apart, by C.A. King. In true King fashion this story will take you on an epic journey full of emotions and leave you wanting more.
First attracted to this ebook by the beautiful cover. I can’t get over getting 17 novellas for 0.99 😲 not only great value but very entertaining - especially if you love fantasy like me. My favourite was by C A King, Shamrock ☘️ & Clover lovely magical romantic. Highly recommend this set of books.
I was intrigued to pick this anthology up as I enjoy reading romances from time-to- time. I thought the cover was fabulous. Also, I've read one of the contributing authors before - Didi Oviatt - and was impressed by her writing style in Search For Maylee which I reviewed: https://mjmallon.com/2020/12/17/searc...
There's a great variety in this collection and it was a nice surprise to see lots of fantasy, witchy and magical stories which is not something I was expecting. So, that was a nice surprise! This girl loves fantasy!
The stories were on the long side - some novella in length.
Overall, an entertaining collection of stories. Didi Oviatt did not disappoint. I enjoyed her tale Skinny Dippin' - what a title - it certainly had enough raciness to keep me reading! I particularly liked the banter between her and her twin children which I thought was written very well. I enjoyed her struggling with her emotions uncertain whether she should get involved with a mysterious younger man! The ending was a massive twist, returning to the hint of something unexplained which was mentioned at the beginning of the story. Cleverly done. In fact, I had the feeling that perhaps this story could be developed into a longer piece of fiction, but I'm not sure if that's what Didi intends...
Anthologies are a great way to introduce readers to new authors. I'd also like to mention that I particularly enjoyed a contribution from a new author to me: Megan Kuykendall. Her story, A solstice to remember about a shape shifting wolf, a journalist and a siren, was ace too.
This Review is for Love Out of Bounds OMG What a phenomenal story from Tricia Daniels. Maddie is the chosen one of the O'Connell clan, She has expectations she is expected to live up to. Nate is the ultimate bad boy that is ready to settle down and he wants Maddie to do it with him. I can't explain how this book gave me goosebumps when reading certain scenes, All I can say is go click it and get to know all of the characters in this series and if you haven't read any of this series, you may wanna go click those too.
I picked up this book as it included a story from an author I've enjoyed before, Shamrock and Clover, Fields Apart by C A King. The story didn't disappoint. It is a well-written, charming account of two lonely people who weren't looking for love meeting at the right time. My only complaint is that it was too short. I'm looking forward to reading the remaining stories in this compilation. What great value for money!
This review is for one book in this multi authored anthology.
The Temple by M.A. Abraham is a novella that is part of the Sinners and Saints Anthology. Above is the list of authors participating in this Anthology and a brief description. Since I read all of M.A. Abraham’s work, this review is only on her novella The Temple. Brief description: Ele is a powerful goddess in her own right, so she doesn’t worry about her safety as her sisters think she should. She is beautiful in ways that catches the wrong type attention. In order to keep her safe, her sisters blackmail a god from another world to take Ele into his care. Sagan is a warrior god on his planet and every bit as powerful as Ele. He is also the epitome of what every woman thinks a god should look like. Without seeing Ele, he promises to keep her safe and keep his distance. After seeing Ele, he doubts if he can keep his word.
At the start we meet Ele, our heroine, and her sisters, who fear their sister in law is planning on doing something bad to Ele. Normally, Ele could handle herself, as she is one of the most powerful goddesses, but the sisters decide to make sure she is safe. They call upon a warrior god, Sagan, to protect her and after being convinced, he takes Ele to his planet. Even though she is surprised, Ele knows why she is on this planet, and takes it upon herself to womanize the planet which is bare everywhere. Slowly, Sagan finds himself attracted to her, and tries to win her over.
When Sagan goes away for awhile to handle his bad brother, he returns to find that his home, and his warriors have totally changed, due to Ele’s influence. When his brother returns, he decides to make Ele his own, and the two battle it out.
What follows is a battle that will involve Sagan, his brother Chase, and their father, whom Ele saved. Sagan manages to be a step ahead of Chase, but learns that the danger sits with the father. Will Sagan survive? What happens to Ele when she manages to escape and return home? You will need to read this short story to find out.
I really enjoyed this quick read, and was happy with how the story concluded. M.A. Abraham once again gives us a fun story line, with great characters.
Such a great variety of stories! There's magic, romance, mystery, fairy tales, and all the stories make you start to question where the line between good-guy and bad-guy intersect. Each author has their own personality of writing and it's great to be able to sample so many different people! Every story is a page turner and I love that I can sit down and take a night or two to finish one, and then read another story on a different day. It's like I'm reading a different book every night.
This one was recommended in a authors takeover. I must say this anthology has to be my favorite I've read. I have found quite a few new authors with this one.
