Becky Tibbs didn’t ask for the job or the gift of being a medium, but after her parents died, the unusual ability became a bequest – a gift handed down from her mother’s side of the family.
An optimistic and positive young woman, Becky determines to make the best of a difficult situation in the small town of Asheville, North Carolina where the smallest detail is noticed and everyone knows everything about everyone else.
Becky deals with a lot of departed spirits in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Such a job can get rather hectic at times. Misunderstood ghosts can create a lot of sticky problems for the living and a community such as hers.
Used to dealing with ghosts on a daily basis, Becky is not easily surprised. However, on her 26th birthday, Becky gets the biggest shock she’s had in the past ten years and it’s a doozy.

Nice, quick read that kept my interest and I would like to read more from this author and this series. You got to know the characters flaws and all, story was interesting and leaves room for growth both in the storyline and writing. At points it may have seem forced hence not 5 stars. I received an advance copy for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
A ghostly mystery for a medium to solve sounded all sorts of fun listening. I was glad to try a new to me author and narrator for the first installment in this paranormal cozy mystery series.
A Medium’s Birthday Surprise jumped right into things with antique shop owner, Becky Tibbs, getting a visit from the ghost of her high school crush who disappeared and died ten years before on her birthday. Since that moment, her parents passed away in a car crash and she, her brother, Bobby, and her sister, Barbara, learned they inherited their mother’s heritage- a medium talent to see and talk to the dead. Becky embraced the gift and is known as a medium to the living and helper to the dead while her siblings do their best to downplay or ignore the talent.
This book introduces a fun and curious world where ghosts roam the streets of Ashville alongside the living. I loved how the ghosts and the family medium talent were at the center of it all. It opened on a scene at Becky’s business and started me out feeling like I had missed something, but then darted between present events and getting the listener up to speed about Becky, her background, and her family as well as history with each newly introduced character so I lost the confused feeling. The situation is important, but not drastic since the ghost’s death was a decade earlier, but she must figure out the truth to help settle the ghosts so there is a cold case mystery and their small part of Ashville and growing up there allows her to have the right contacts in the police and the community to do a fair job of investigating which she does when her mind’s not caught up on stuff that affects the pacing of the story.
The pace is uneven at times Becky gets philosophical about her family, her past, and her view of religion so that there were lag moments before the plot would pick back up again. Nearer the end, the story settled into the plot and a nice pace as she tracked down the facts of Josh, her high school crush’s, death and another related angry ghost.
A Medium’s Birthday Surprise sets up for a full series of further paranormal mysteries. I thought the main character was sweet and generous so she needed to help others even ghosts. The side characters that were introduced will be as welcome as Becky in future books.
Kathleen Britt had a distinct narration voice and way of voicing the characters that wasn’t bad, but I did find distracting. Her male voices had some frogginess to them. I needed time to settle into her style of narration. The production quality of the audiobook was excellent.
In summary, I liked it, but also felt it had first book in series issues and I wasn’t completely immersed in the story though I want to go on to book two. The medium and ghost world the author created was great and I love that the main character solves ghostly mysteries. I think others who are looking for paranormal cozy mysteries should take a look at the series.

This is the first book in the Becky Tibbs: A North Carolina Medium Mystery Series, in which medium Becky Tibbs uses her paranormal abilities to help solve mysteries and help ghosts find peace.
While skeptics might think that such blending of cozy mystery and paranormal investigation sounds contrived, Walker has created characters and storylines that seem realistic and eminently believable. A range of world views and perspectives are represented by different characters in the story, and the reader is respectfully left to draw their own conclusions.
Regardless of one’s philosophy and world view, this is a really interesting and well-crafted mystery story. Becky’s path to solving the mystery is challenging and complex, and she must rely on investigation and logic to solve the problems she encounters along the way.
The writing is good and the action and intrigue of the story builds well, right up to the end of the book.
Becky's boyfriend's ghost shows up ten years after his death. It's her 26th birthday and there's no rhyme or reason as to why Josh has turned up now. As a medium, Becky feels it's her duty to help him move on. Can Becky figure out what happened to him and help him cross over? This is a refreshing take on mediums and ghostly encounters. If you love ghosts, this is for you. Loved it!
My first step into cozy mysteries and this was enjoyable to learn about the Tibbs family and go on a journey through where past and present can collide.
When Becky Tibbs parents are killed in a car accident, she and her siblings discover they have the ability to act as mediums. Although, Becky is the only one willing to help out the spirits, as her brother and sister would rather drown them out by self-medicating.
Becky is having a birthday party and everyone is invited, dearly departed family as well as those living among them. It's when her former boyfriend makes an appearance that he realizes he has been dead for 10 years but has been unable to crossover to the other side. A day later, a local widow visits Becky seeking assistance with her departed husband. The husband is somehow trapped with Becky's former boyfriend, and it's up to Becky to help free them.
I found the story to be quite intriguing. The characters are well-developed and as a reader, I couldn't help but fall in love with their personalities. The book is a quick read, but one that holds your attention from the beginning to the end. I really appreciated the originality of the story. There is just the right amount of twists and turns, and overall I was quite satisfied with the book.
I received a free copy of this book for the purpose of review and this is my honest and unbiased opinion. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that loves a good cozy mystery.
If you like paranormal mysteries, grab this first book in this series. Becky and her siblings are celebrating her 26th birthday, when Becky's high school boyfriend, Josh, shows up, full of anger. Trouble is Josh has been dead for 10 years. He doesn't seem to know he has passed and seems to be asking Becky for help. Josh doesn't know how he died. The story is about Becky trying to find out what happened to Josh, so he can move on. In her investigation, she finds a dark family secret. Meanwhile, Becky's brother and sister, Bobby and Barbara, also had the "gift" of seeing ghosts. Problem is they do not want this gift, whereas Becky has embraced it and frequently helps ghosts to move on. The dark side to this cozy mystery is that Bobby is dealing with it by drinking and Barbara is self medicating, both to numb their ability. This is an interesting twist as this seems like a real reaction to suddenly seeing ghosts. It seems real that not everyone would be thrilled with this type of ability. Scary! This peaks my interest to see what mystery will Becky get involved in next and what will her siblings do as they seem to be on a self destructive path. Will Becky be able to help them also? Good mystery and interesting, captivating family story. More to come... I received a free copy and voluntarily provided this review.
A good read although the language felt a bit stilted at times. The characters are good but just felt that Beck was a bit too holier than though in parts. She needs to become a bit looser and less uptight. Also please note that this is only 83% of the page count. Since the death of their parents the three siblings have been able to see ghosts. The oldest tried to smother the ability with drugs, the middle tried to hide his in the bottom of a glass whilst Beck the youngest had embraced her gift and tried to use it to help. Passing messages on and getting ghosts to pass on. However she has been feeling restless for the past couple of days and on the day of her birthday she suddenly gets a visit from an old boyfriend who died 10 years ago. Why has he come to her now? As she ponders the question she is asked to investigate a local resident's house. She claims that her husband has suddenly started to show and also that the teen has also been around. Why have they both suddenly decided to appear? Both died 10 years ago - is there a connection? The more she investigates the more things become clear. Now with the help of her elder sister's ex boyfriend they start getting to the truth. Will both ghosts be laid to rest?
Try to imagine that immediately following your parents deaths--you discover that they are perfectly visible---and quite nosy as a matter of fact. Becky the youngest of the three siblings takes to all this like a fish in water. She loves helping people who have not quite passed over --and they swarm to her for help. So do the very living people who are being visited by ghosts! Her brother and sister resist--and that is putting it mildly!! The things they do to ignore the ghosts!!
Then a very angry young man who hadn't been seen since Becky's 16th birthday party--starts appearing. Becky is determined to find out what actually happened to him and to put his soul to rest.
In this light and airy novel Chariss K Walker gets in her take of spirituality and life itself. This is the first in this series and I will be awaiting the next one to see what Becky's brother ends up doing! A Medium's Birthday Surprise
This is such an enjoyable book. Becky Tibbs is a sweet girl, 26 years old, she runs her late parents' antique shop, lives in the family home and helps dead people!
It is Becky's 26th birthday when her old boyfriend, Josh, turns up unexpectedly, unfortunately as he doesn't realise he's been dead for a decade their reunion doesn't go quite the way he'd planned! Once he leaves Becky begins to wonder about the visit and his current state of limbo which leads her into an investigation a little different to her usual day to day activities.
The storyline is gentle but doesn't hold back when necessary from addressing the problems of everyday life. The fact that Becky helps the dead and the living adds an original twist to the storyline and I was entertained from start to finish. There are five books in this series and will definitely looking out for the others.
I was able to read a copy of this book thanks to BookSiren and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys cosyish crime with an endearing main protagonist and a supporting cast more than a little out of the ordinary.
After her parent's death, Becky Tibbs was gifted with the ability to be a medium. She had little experience with the big bad world, but she did know the afterlife. Becky gets a blast from her past in the form of an ex-boyfriend. She has set out to discover what happened to him all those years ago. We get to see what happens in life and death. However, the story doesn't dive too deep into the afterlife so as not to take on a serious tone. The story has an almost superficial feel as far as depth so as not to take on a serious tone. The author keeps it light, cozy and fun and it was the right choice for this book. The characters were developed and there were enough layers to the plot to keep you engaged. If I had a complaint, it would be the number of errors. I good proofreader would catch those before publishing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the focus on family values and beliefs.
Three siblings learn of a gift they’ve all inherited. Each has found a unique way to cope. The different approaches do nothing to hamper the love they feel for one another.
I enjoyed watching Becky’s interactions. Ghosts are treated with the same respect and consideration as the living. This compassion draws in guidance from the distance past. Becky is the only person to see and hear her.
Becky’s surprise? A visitor from a decade ago. What happened that night ten years ago? Why now? Too many coincidences quickly come to light.
There's a lot happening in this book, but it is very well written and keeps you intrigued.
Becky has been seeing ghosts ever since her parents passed away, her siblings as well, but they try to distance themselves from it. Things get rolling when Josh, Becky's boyfriend who was killed 10 years ago, shows up and creates havoc for those around.
It's very clear who killed Josh, but the information you learn about each character involved sets the story up to continue on and give you a better feel of the character themselves.
The story does touch a little on alcoholism and perception drug abuse, so please be aware. If you have these issues, please seek help.
I received a copy of this book free in exchange from for mt honest review.
A Medium’s Birthday Surprise was just that. This book is filled with love, and ghosts. Did I say ghosts? The title met its expectations. I was surprised and wonderfully intrigued. Becky interacts with and advises the departed in a loving calm manner making their possible existence just one tick closer, which is all I ask of a book. This is a beautifully written book that effortlessly connects you to its characters both the living and the not so living. Chariss K. Walker has written a unique story filled with more possible variations of love and loss than I anticipated. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
I found this book extremely heartwarming, addictive, and intriguing. The paranormal aspect of the book gave me a much different view of solving a crime. we know that siblings share a lot, they inherit similar qualities, but are also extremely different from one another. there is one quality, in this book, that three siblings share unlike any other set of siblings. It binds them closely together, but it also can tear them apart. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series! I am anxiously waiting to see how each sibling handles the commonality between them. You want to find out how everything starts, and unfolds. You will not be disappointed!
Becky Tibbs is an interesting character. An antique dealer - in the tradition of her late parents - she also sees dead people, and most often can be found helping them resolve their earthly issues and "cross over". In so doing, she often comes across mysteries that need to be solved - her favourite part of what she does.
It's a great premise, with a lot of potentially interesting stories to come. A good read for a quiet afternoon.

This is a cute, fun cozy mystery. Becky is a medium who helps ghosts and in turn also helps the living. She receives a visit from an unexpected ghost on her 26th birthday, In turn she takes it upon herself to discover what happened to this ghost. There were some light-hearted moments as we get to know the crazy, tangled up mess of Becky and her two siblings, Barbara and Bobby. The story also has some intriguing perspectives on what happens after a person dies (of course proposed by a spirit). I liked Becky and the storyline piqued my interest. I recommend this to lovers of cozies with some paranormal activity thrown in. I hope there are more books to come.
The three Tibbs siblings had a rude awakening to their psychic abilities. No one prepared them. The two eldest decided they didn't want to deal with ghosts. Becky, the youngest and most docile of the three, is a people pleaser which translates into not wanting to disappoint the no longer living as well. When her birthday rolls around it is common for her dearly departed ancestors to bring her greetings. This year, someone else also showed up and he is not in a good mood.
Written in language suitable to high school age and above, this is a clean mystery with interesting characters. It flows smoothly. I enjoyed the dog too. It is a very quick read.
I read this book in one sitting. Granted it's not a huge and heavy tome, but it is a very good read. Three siblings are all mediums, although only one is using the gift. Becky helps ghosts with problems and living people with ghosts. During this story she learns a valuable truth - what we believe happens after death affects what happens to us after death.
Although this is a lighthearted cozy mystery there are spiritual issues covered that could help us all.

Becky, a medium, receives a most unexpected birthday surprise:the reappearance of josh, her high school boyfriend who mysteriously disappear3d during her 16th birthday party. Josh believes that Becky is the only one who can help him learn the truth about his disappearance and realization that he’s dead. Through her investigation Becky learns the truth which enables Josh to transition to a bette4 place. I wanted to like this more I really did. At times I thought the dialogue was stilt3d and not very believable. All in all it was just ok
I enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the next book in this new series. Becky, Bobby, and Barb are siblings who come into the gift to see and communicate with the dead. Becky is the only one who looks upon it as a gift and tries to find out what really happened to an old boyfriend the night he died.

Very cute story! I enjoyed each of the characters and I absolutely loved that it was set in one of my favorite cities, Asheville, North Carolina. It was wonderful imagining where each character was. I could clearly picture it since I am familiar with the area. The book definitely left me wanting to read the next in the series.

When Becky and her siblings develop the gift to see ghosts on the day their parents died they each find their own way of coping. Becky turns out to be the only one to actually use her gift and helps ghosts move on all the time. Can she help the angry teen that died on her sixteenth birthday or he continue to loose his temper and refuse to go?
I received this book as an arc and am voluntarily leaving a review.
When their parents die in an accident Becky, Bobby and Barb find they are mediums. Barb hides her ability with drugs, Bobby makes the mistake of joining the military and the ghosts of his fellow soldiers make him turn to alcohol. Becky has spent 10 years helping all who have asked but on this birthday her old boyfriend Josh shows up and he is angry and in pain. He is so destructive in his anger it is a dangerous job to try to help him.
Becky Tibbs is a sweet natured and understanding girl particularly for the troubled spirits which appear in her home. I enjoyed her strident and nosy parents who are in spirit as well as the mention of many spirits who congregate in her shop just to talk amongst themselves. The solving of the murder is a surprise and well handled. Voracious Readers Only offered this book to me.
A light, not too demanding story about a 'nice' girl using her gift to help move spirits on, by dealing with their unfinished business. Add siblings who bury their gift as best they can, and an angry revenge seeking murdered boyfriend, and you have a read. This book was provided for review by Voracious Readers Only.
When I began to read this book, I expected a fluffy, fun novel like most other recent ghost and people interaction stories. It isn't. Family drama. Good families. Bad families. Spiritual successes. Hypocrisy and the disasters that can follow in its wake. Walker is a passionate writer. If you can't handle this kind of story don't read this book. But I hope you will read it, and think about it after you put it down.
Becky Tibbs is in for a surprise the morning of her 26th birthday when she discovers her teenage boyfriend Josh in her kitchen. What happened to him ten years ago? He doesn’t remember a thing except enjoying the day with her and dancing. Now Becky is left using her special gift to piece together what happened and help his spirit rest in peace.
The author weaves a nice tale that allows you to see the different sides of life and death. Her main character is loving and filled with great compassion for those lingering spirits that need guidance to move on. This is a cozy mystery with a twist of psychic suspense and paranormal aspects.

The youngest of three siblings who learned they are mediums when their parents appeared to them just after having died in an accident, Becky embraced it and helps every spirit as best she can while both her siblings do everything to avoid it. Now she has to help an old boyfriend find out how he died. A different kind of story. Looking forward to the next one.
