Needing employment to help his ailing mother, Alaric Keening gets a job as a billionaire dragon's clairvoyant. He never imagined his almost useless talent would ever become a marketable skill, and even worse--the sight of his new boss leaves him breathless. That was the worst, until the first day on the job, he finds himself nearly dying in the arms of his new boss.
Tarquin is a storm dragon, and he's been alone for centuries. Fleeing the Great Wars, he sacrificed his old territory and made a new home in Montreal, collecting companies to fill the void left by the loss of his hoard. Running an international company in the magical world means hiring a clairvoyant to protect his assets, and yet there is nothing to protect his heart when Alaric Keening walks into his office.
Between trying to keep Alaric alive and trying to find who's out to kill Tarquin, they can't deny the connection that goes far beyond that of a boss and his new employee--but that of a dragon and his treasure.
Treasured was previously published as the short story, A Caller From Montreal, in the Heart2Heart Charity Anthology Vol 4. It has been expanded and lightly edited with new content. Word count is 25,000 words.

I'm a nomad--I move a lot. My health is sporadic, so when I'm feeling well enough is when I'm writing. Which is good, as otherwise, I think my suffering translates to boring stories. ;)
I've learned the hard way that I can't do release dates until a book is 100% DONE. No projected dates anymore. For up to date and accurate information, find me on Facebook and Twitter. I RARELY come to GR. It'll be months before I'm back again.
Any books I have reviewed are my own opinions and done so without malice. I won't review a book anymore if I can't give it 3 stars or higher. Most of my reviews are based upon how a book makes me FEEL. Entirely subjective and personal. Exceptions are in cases of plagiarism and intellectual property theft or a massively horrible formatting job or erroneous content (ie the title and blurb don't match the interior.)
This was a very enjoyable take on dragons showcasing ancient Tarquin, who’s a powerful rich tycoon that needs a clairvoyant to help him assess the validity of his business deals with others. To both Tarquin and Alaric’s surprise, the connection is combustible and immediate as Tarquin realizes that his new employee is basically the rarest of all prizes - a literal priceless treasure in human form for Tarquin to adore and take care of for all eternity. Thing is, Alaraic simply has to feel the same way and agree.
It will come as absolutely no surprise that Alaric doesn’t have to think too hard on whether he’d like to be kept, and these two go from complete strangers to mates in literally 2 days. Hey, it’s romantic fiction after all right?
Again, an interesting look at dragons and what they love to hoard that succeeds in Himes’s capable hands. I only wish she wrote faster regarding the rest of her ongoing series!!
A short insta-love story about a dragon who finds his treasure. Very sweet and with quite a lot of plot in such a short book. But it fits together wonderfully and you also get a good insight into the characters of Tarquin and Alaric. Tarquin immediately becomes a possessive dragon, but he remains incredibly gentle and is simply adorable.
He did not want to scare this young man, this human whose very presence made every fiber of his being scream treasure. Treasure was to be protected, cherished, and adored. Never scared. 🐉😳🐉
“We, um,” he blushed hard. “Probably just broke every HR rule about sexual conduct in the office.” Tarquin smiled, fangs glinting. “Does kissing your boss bother you?” He shook his head. “Nope. Can I have another?” “My treasure may have as many kisses as he wishes,” Tarquin said, leaning down and gently nipping along Alaric’s jaw. “I can deny you nothing.” 🫠🫠🫠
If you fancy a bit of fantasy, love growly dragons and don't mind the speed of a fated relationship, then what are you waiting for?
This was a cute, lovely and quick read designed to lift your spirits and make you smile. Admittedly there isn't a massive amount of depth (but it is a novella after all!), but I thoroughly enjoyed Tarquin and Alaric and all the intense feelings triggered by magic, being mates and a dangerous situation. And the world building is really well done, too!
For those who 'treasure' a relationship where one man is the carer, provider and more dominant and the other is shy, needy and revels in the attention of his partner, this is a nugget of gold!
This short little urban fantasy story was oozing with sweetness and unconfined passion between two supernaturally gifted fated mates.
Those with a strong aversion towards insta-love romances need not bother here, as centuries-old storm dragon and self-made millionaire businessman, Tarquin, meets, craves, falls hard for, and passionately claims Alaric, a young clairvoyant who turns out to be Tarquin’s most precious treasure yet, in just a matter of days.
This story is fast-paced, romantic—in a grr-mine, I’ve-waited-centuries-to-find-you kind of way—and so very easy to read and enjoy.
As a fan of Himes, I’m unsurprised to have liked this short-story, even if it’s on the fluffier side of the story-scale and perhaps too fleeting to really dig into. I honestly had fun regardless of the length or character/story depth, and believe this one works really well as a tasty palate cleanser between meatier reads.
3.5 stars. While the story was not as well developed as I've come to expect from SJ Himes, it is a very short novella and I quite enjoyed it. I'd absolutely be interested in a full story in the universe.
Thanks again to Destiny is All Elf *who I'm pretty sure I guessed 😉* for the story. 😘
****
This is a gift from Destiny is All Elf, thank you so much! There’s no better present than dragons!! 🔥
SJ took their story from a charity anthology and added a bunch more words and released it on their own. This story is just a delight - sweet characters and a very sweet romance between a dragon and his human treasure.
For a short story, it really packs a punch, with a great quick world building and diverse characters.
2.5⭐, but I'll round it down, because honestly, as much as I love dragons, this story was boring and the only thing remotely thought-out was the sex scene near the end, so I'll give 2.5⭐ for that and the possibility the ideas here present- it's a monster romance after all - but I think the author should revise everything and really take time to fully develop the story and both main characters.
🟣 Dragon/human (clairvoyant) 🟢 Magic and humanity intertwined 🔵 Size difference 🟠 Age gap (eternal life) 🟡 Some plot but grossly underdeveloped 🟢 A lot of talk about the horde but the Dragon not fleshed out 🔵 Insta love and wasn't good 🟠 Both MMCs gay 🌶️ One sex scene and it was really good, so why didn't the author just put more of that in the story? Would be much better than it was; t/b
Yeah, I love dragons. I do. Tarquin, the powerful and rich dragon shifter sadly didn't get the right story for me to really appreciate him and him and Alaric, the broke guy who's also clairvoyant, had a quick insta-love where they supposedly fell in love, killed the bad guy and Alaric was rescued from poverty. Quick and underwhelming.
Apparently this is common amongst humans, this is a world where magic is on the table all the time and that was thrown into the story without any kind of explanation about what kind of a world we're in. The kind where everyone knows Tarquin is a dragon and can transform in the middle of a boarding room? So the world setting was completely left out.
Alaric and Tarquin created a bond where Alaric was Tarquin's treasure and it was funny him being called that all the time, again, without me knowing about the weight that word carries.
“We met on Monday. Are you sure?” Alaric didn’t sound doubtful, more afraid Tarquin would change his mind. “Absolutely certain,” Tarquin vowed. “You are mine, as surely as I am yours.” He paused. “If you want to be my treasure. I will not pressure you into saying yes.” 🥴
It was cheesy and felt like Tarquin just wanted to get into Alaric's pants. No, I couldn't feel the immediate fated mate bond or whatever, I couldn't.
🔵 The pants thing, yeah, well, the sex was really good. I liked it. It's near the 90% of the story the author suddenly came alive. The story was all of a sudden interesting because that was the only part where I felt a real connection between Alaric and Tarquin.
"He gasped, somewhat nervous and nearly mad with want, a pillow slipping under his hips, lifting his ass higher. A hot hand gently rubbed down his spine, pressing his shoulders to the bedding, and a knee knocked his thighs open until he was lying with his ass up and open, ready for whatever Tarquin wanted to do to him."
Now you're talkin'.
"Tarquin covered him completely and held him in place for each deep, rocking thrust, slow and steady at first, going as deeply as he could with each thrust of his hips. Hot breath whispered over his neck, Tarquin licking at the base of his neck, sucking up marks as he fucked Alaric into the pillows."
The claiming too and I wonder, where was this Tarquin before?? He's a dragon, for fuck's sake, yet he was a boring character almost in the background the whole time.
"Teeth latched into the base of his neck and Tarquin growled, biting down, the pain chasing the pleasure in an endless loop, and he gasped softly, going limp. The huge cock in his ass became even harder, stiffening, and the final thrust was the deepest yet. Tarquin shivered as he came, pumping hot cum deep inside, arms wrapping around Alaric, holding him still, teeth refusing to release the grip on the nape of his neck."
Tarquin then spends time with Alaric in his true form, up on his deck with the wind and the sun and his scales and his snout and fuck me, so many options are at your disposal yet the majority of the book held some useless plot and couldn't rather focus on Alaric and Tarquin?? Wow.
I don't know this author but based on what I've read they're doing a terrible job with the world setting and the plot, they're not giving us fleshed out characters, but they can damn well write good smut.
If for nothing else, read this short story for Alaric and Tarquin's intimacy, because the rest is lukewarm.
Promising story just too insta-love and too short. I wanted it expanded upon and the ending seems to say it will be so, that's great! I look forward to more about these two.
It was a nice one. The time for the characters to be together (and thus develop a romance) was short, but somehow things were so well developed it didn't feel like such a ridiculous thing for a romance to develop.
This book certainly sounds like something I would enjoy, however, I just couldn’t get into the writing. When a book is only 70 pages, but you find yourself constantly checking how much is left and realizing you’ve been reading entire paragraphs without even paying attention to the words, it’s time to call it quits.
I expected way more from this story, but the plot was rushed and a bit boring. I'm a huge fan of stories with dragons, mates etc..but here it felt as if something was missing. Maybe with more pages and more action, I would have rated this higher. In the end I gave 3 stars because it was an HEA.
The bulk of the story happened within three days. I just felt Alaric and Tarquin’s chemistry wasn’t there. It was insta, insta love lol. So, yeah I skimmed it 😬
Well it’s been forever since I picked up a book, and today is the first day since my kids near death experience that I actually wanted to read... so here we are...
While I really wanted to read something longer that had been on my TBR, when the urge to read hit me it was pretty late and I wanted something quick I could finish in just a few hours.
For me this book was exactly what I needed. It was an author I’m familiar with and have enjoyed, it was under 100 pages and it was a simple and sweet dragon romance with excessive talk of treasure. Muy perfecto.
I’m hoping this book broke some ground for me to get back into reading, but I assume only time will tell.
This book is so sweet. For a short novella, it's packed with love and care and magic. Tarquin is a storm dragon who hires a new Truthseeker for his business. The Truthseeker comes in the form of clairvoyant Alaric. Alaric needs this job. His family is in massive debt and he's at his wit's end. When he meets Tarquin, unexplained feelings rush to the surface. Tarquin and Alaric are so cute together. The connection between them is visceral and even though everything between them happens quickly, you can believe that they are good for one another. I really hope we get more of them because now that Alaric and Tarquin found one another, I know they'll be able to do so much more with their lives.
I picked this up on a whim. It was meh. I need to start ignoring kindle store recommendations!
My overwhelming feeling in the book was utter boredom with the obsession with wealth in so many romance books today. This one was particularly bad.
I mean - it’s a novella - so it was incredibly insta, and time was limited for lengthy explanations... but we had barely nothing about the MCs personalities, interest, no banter, minimal description of looks (ignoring the repetitive Spanish gold references).
What we had was paragraphs and paragraphs, pages and pages of descriptions of how rich Tarquin is. How lush his penthouse is. Etc. So boring! We get it!!!
Honestly there was nothing new or original at all, and basically a trashy M/F disguised as M/M
The book was bare bones with no real story or character development. Ric was a nice enough but really I wanted to know more about him. Just not my favorite book at all.
Szkoda. I znowu za dużo słodyczy.
I read this one in the anthology and gave it 4 stars. On its own, I didn't enjoy it as much. The characters were sweet, but it was short, fast and really nothing new. The backstory of the podcast is missing and I think that was why I preferred it in the anthology.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Tarquin is an old, powerful storm dragon, living as a billionaire businessman. Alaric is a psychic, hired by Tarquin's company to authenticate some ancient documents. They have an immediate connection, and Tarquin realised Alaric is his hoard - the dragon equivalent of a mate.
I feel terrible to say this, but Treasured is the one book by SJ Himes that I didn't like. She is an excellent writer, and her Necromancer of Beacon Hills is one of my favourite series ever, but this book did not resonate with me. The insta-love was a big no for me, and I did not like the rest of the story that much either.
Still, the writing style is excellent, drawing the reader right into the book, and all the signs were there of her incredible imagination and wonderful world-building abilities.
Treasured is sweet story, our MC’s Master Tarquin is a dragon shifter and Alaric a mortal. I love SJ Himes’s books and this Novella is great! Tarquin is in his way to work and is listening to his favorite podcast he heard the story about a young man making a wish, he needs money to help is mom... at the end of the podcast Tarquin hoped the young man is better now, when he arrived at work he is about to meet his new employee. Alaric is late to his first day at work, he had a talent he is an clairvoyant and is hired to be the new Truthseeker, his job is to verify the authenticity of artifacts, relics, letters and antiques. I find this very interesting! This is where Alaric meet Tarquin the Dragon Lord of storms and his new boss. They have an instant connection, I love that they feel the chemistry between them, this story is fill with sweet moments, magic and a dragon finding his treasure! Love it!!!! I highly recommended this book. I received an ARC in exchange of an honest review.
