Happy Weiner!
Mallory is a Halloween baby. Born on the festive day, with pumpkin hair, to boot. And even though she's recently jobless, she's determined to celebrate. That is, until she sees some costumed goons breaking into houses. Yeah, the saying is trick or treat, but that just supposed to be to get the candy. Not actually trick their way into houses. Abandoned houses, with tales of yeti, but still. And, by the way, wouldn't you know it but the goons breaking in? Yeah, they went all out on those yeti costumes!
Spoilers ahead.
Ms Lynn has given us another zany heroine to laugh with. Mal is as wild as Joanie and, when she gets to the village, becomes her friend. The witch costume, and the badly mangled title of Baba Yaga was hysterical. Not that I feel any sympathy for Rek, the talking rectum. This was shorter than the usual hunt books, but a welcome addition to it. And I'm so glad that Joanie is finally getting her book next. This one doesn't have a crazy George and Candy combo, or a deaf mate being dissed by the village jerk. But it's a sweet, pun intended, slice of Lo denii life. The romance moves a little faster, partly due to her interests before being brought through the portal as much as the shorter book length.
As a side note, I'm a little sad all that candy got wasted and left behind. As a fellow candy aficionado, it broke my heart lol. And Rek's coat miraculously cleaned itself somewhere between her being hauled off through the portal and appearing in the village. I was kind of hoping that Joanie would deliberately pick at it, or claim that it needed to be cut free, either way leaving him to look like he had mange.
