Crypt Coffee #5

Tipped scales

Rate this book
Sequel to Slim Chance

A series of murders and attempted murders gets the summer off to a dangerous start as Sean finally has a little time off from teaching to help Decrypter Dane investigate what's going on in Bleu Falls. The town's magic is being manipulated, and not only is Dane's Order of Decrypters leaving him out of the loop, he's being assigned to play bodyguard for the owner of a local smoothie shop, who might also be a Bigfoot. While Sean and Dane attempt to balance their relationship and their obligations to their paranormal organizations, the attacks escalate.

As the pieces start clicking into place, what becomes obvious is that there's an awful lot of raw magical power concentrating in Bleu Falls. Enough that whoever controls it could completely change not just the town, but the whole world. And the closer Sean and Dane get to the bottom of things, the less likely it seems they will ever have a chance at a future together -- unless they can tip the scales in favor of a happy ending.

More coherent thoughts to come but for now this is a perfect send-off to the series. All the dangling plot points are tied up, the characters are taken to some new and interesting places, and it really does pay off in the best of ways.

A lot of what I like about this series is that the leads, Sean and Dane, aren't exactly the best for each other. And yet as the series goes on I found myself rooting for them more and more. They're damaged in some profound ways and the series doesn't let them off the hook for that. Dane is rewarded for being an asshole. Rather, he's rewarded as he lets himself be more vulnerable and as he learns how to be a better friend and partner.

That said, the stars here are also the extended cast. Ned is phenomenal, Chip is hilarious, and I found myself really enjoying Big Frank, the sasquatch with amnesia. Just so much to enjoy here and the ending is profound and fun and as always sexy. Do give this one a try!

I hate, hate negative reviews, but I just have to express where this series went off the rails to me. I loved the first books which are very clever and interesting, but in book four some characters enter who abuse, torture and kill animals and continue on to become main characters with no punishment. I flipped out. Support your local humane society. Just couldn't handle it. Sorry, man. Those people should all die horribly. *coff*
