The Keepers of the Light is the second book in the sensational God Stones YA contemporary fantasy series. If you like diverse characters, immersive settings, and heated suspense, then you'll love Otto Schafer's coming-of-age adventure.
Read The Keepers of the Light and fulfill your prophecy today!
Otto Schafer grew up exploring the small historic town in central Illinois featured in his first work of fiction, The Secret Journal. If you visit Petersburg, Illinois you may find locations familiar from the book. You may even discover, as Otto did, that history has left behind cleverly hidden traces of magic, whispered secrets, and untold treasures.
Otto is currently working on the third book in the Wrack and Ruin series, set to release in early 2025.
He and his loving wife reside in a quiet log cabin tucked away in the woods. You can often find him sitting out back by the koi pond, whittling words into stories for his readers.
This series is absolutely amazing! The Keepers of the Light is an excellent continuation of the God Stones series. If you enjoy mythical beings, surprising plot twists, and a book you can’t put down, you definitely want to check out this series. Shaffer’s writing is so good, and the plot is so developed. Garrett and his group of sages face many challenges that keep the reader on edge. Also, the addition of a new character, Gabi, connects a few things from book one.
Gabi and her parents are working on the archaeological dig in Mexico, which Breanne and her dad discovered at the beginning of The Secret Journal. Bizarre things begin happening at this site, and it all connects to what Garrett is dealing with back in Illinois. This book is so action-packed, and I really enjoy what each character brings to the group of friends. The “ribbing” between the male characters who grew up together is hilarious. Even though they make jabs at each other, you can tell they really care about their friends.
The villains in this series are compellingly evil. Apep is the epitome of the evil bad guy, and the epilogue at the end from the bully Jack’s point of view, oh my god! As soon as I finished this book, I quickly picked up the third one! I can’t wait to see what the rest of this series has in store.
I FREAKING LOVE THIS SERIES!! IT IS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!
These books are incredible! The action is non-stop, and it has you flipping through the pages and no way do I want to put it down!!
There’s a few new characters in this book. Gabi is a new and interesting character! Then there are characters that are new mythical beings and things get crazy real quick!! You’re drawn right back into the storyline!!
The “evil” or “bad” characters are also really well written. I’m not going to say I like them, but some of them are just really messed up from their past. Of course they did make their choice in how they react to them, so their past isn’t an excuse, but they’re just complex characters and I really don’t think I’d enjoy the story as much without them.
Garrett and his friends have already grown since book one. Some pretty crazy and shocking things happen. The story is fast paced and keeps you flipping the pages, but it’s not so fast that you get lost. I can’t say enough about Schafer’s writing, he is amazing!!!
If you haven’t started this series, then hop on the band wagon and you won’t regret it!!!
Edited: Just finished the audiobook and freaking loved it. The narrator made this book come to like. Makes you think about how they must have listened to the stories on the radio way back when. This was action packed from the start. Better paced than the first. To be fair the first book in series usually drag a bit because of all the info that’s got to be the in them. I had a hard time putting this one down. Lost some sleep trying to finish it. The author keeps giving us surprise twists I don’t see coming! I’m ready for book 3! So glad I started this series after he published the fourth one!
Wow!! This book is a fast-paced, adrenaline rush, put your pacemaker to work, need to know what happens next, read! Schafer did such a phenomenal job of keeping me on the edge of my seat! The action-packed plot kept lifting my heart to heights of success and lows of loss, all while keeping the storyline going and the adventure exciting. Whew!! I think I must have held my breath a dozen times while quickly turning the page to find out what happened next! Excellent read! Now, on to book three!
Wow! Complex ideas masterfully pulled together, vivid settings, host of a persuasive cast, nail-biting, and action-filled scenarios, you inhabit the scenes and remain rapt with attention as Keepers of the Light by Otto Schafer makes for a gripping read!
The Keepers of the Light is the second installment of the God Stones, and this time, the pace quickens.
Time is of the essence for Garrette as an ancient prophecy unfolds and as he embraces his role as the Light that will lead the war against a wizardry enemy - Apep. The one who seeks to destroy the world by the power of the God Stones. Garrett believes he knows the truth of his path to fulfilling his destiny though he had learned that his past was a lie. There is something in his future that he does not realize: what he has to become to fulfill his destiny.
Thirteen-year-old Gabi, meanwhile, has an interest in ancient history and the history of her own Mayan people. She is pleased when Sarah, the lead archaeologist of a dig site in Mexico, invites her to the underground chamber of a re-excavated site. She hopes that she can find the remains of Mayan bodies sacrificed to an ancient rain god once she is inside. Instead, in the black cave, several signs and warnings attempt to deter her from exploring further. Later on, Gabi finds herself alone and face to face with a dreadful creature.
Mentally stimulating and fun YA fantasy read. Can't wait for the third installment!
God Stones is the second book in The Keepers of the Light series. It picks up right where the first book ended, and it takes you on a ride that doesn’t stop! There was so much action and new revelations that it became one of those books that was hard to put down. I loved how Schafer brought even more depth to the characters and their relationships. Even though there are several main characters, they each have their own unique voice and I feel that in this book, I got to know them even better. I’m loving the direction of the storyline and how Garrett is growing into his own person. The way he is written makes you want to root for him and for his friends. Shafer is a fantastic writer and his descriptions during fight scenes or action sequences make you feel like you are right in the middle of it. He also does a wonderful job building the story, and the pacing is perfect. Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the following: dragons, ancient prophies, secret tombs, and new deliciously evil characters. This fantasy story has it all! I’m excited to continue with this series and find out what happens with Garrett and his friends. I’m sure there will be new surprises and I can’t wait to find out what Schafer has in store for his readers.
At the end of Book 1 we are left with Apep gaining the God Stones, Garrett, Lenny and the sages finding out who they are and what their quest will be. Enter Book 2...
It starts right where Book 1 left off and takes off from there. Apep has come for Garrett, who is supposedly the Chosen One that will stop his plan to end this world and thwart his return home.
Can Garrett and his sages complete their quest and stop Apep from combining the God Stones? Or is the world doomed to burn and fade into existence?
OKAY!! Well THAT...WAS... AMAZING! That was Indiana Jones mixed with the Goonies mixed with National Treasure with a little King Kong island of giant animals sprinkled in. Whew!!!
My heart was racing. I was yelling at my book (because yes the characters can hear me screaming at them to Move! Run! Duck! And OMG what are you doing!!). I was pacing at some points and had my heart breaking during others.
I read book two pretty soon after book one, and I am glad I did. Book two picks up right where one leaves off, keeping the reader thrust inside the action of the story. Stakes are high. There's a ticking time clock. Garrett and Bree understand the severity of everything. Apep, the evil sorcerer is fully introduced and man...he's the kind of character I love to hate. More magical elements are introduced -- dragons, giants, arcane magic. I was thrilled to see that the archeological parts still showed up in book two through a new character, Gabi. I thought for sure it would be lost once Bree and Garrett's worlds collide.
While book one in the series took the time to set the stage, book two takes off running straight out of the gate. It's a lot of action and it keeps the pages turning. I especially loved being in Apep's head. Those dark antagonist thoughts were so juicy.
Good twists, high stakes, wonderful magical and mythical elements woven into modern times. Book two still carries forward the Tomb Raider feels that I loved about book one....this is working out to be a rather enjoyable series. :)
I love the way the characters add funny banter back and forth. It goes great with all that is going on. Once the action was picked up, I could not put this book down. I love the 80s and 90s references to movies. It has everything you could want in a story, all while using real historic places. It all works so well. This auther always takes original ideas and spins them to make them his own all while adding relatable characters and humor at the most perfect moments. National treasure, goonies., lord or the rings, stand by me, even harry potter all rolled into one unique story. Can't wait to see what happens next.
A good follow up to the first book of the God Stones. This book goes more into those assigned to the role of Keepers of the Light who help the kids try to stop Epep from destroying the world. Before some of the members were hinted at but this book shows how the network has spread throughout. The story is fast paced and flows really well. I felt this book read a little smoother than the first one did.
I listened to this book on audible, and I loved it! The narrator was awesome! This book kept me on the edge of my seat just like the first one did. Now I have to get the third book to see if they are all reunited, or if **gasp** some of them don't make it... I won't say more. I don't want to leave spoilers.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Keepers of the Light by Otto Schaffer Book 2 in the God Stones Series Garrett is destined to save everyone…he now has a group of friends surrounding him that can help make this happen!!! They all have something special to offer! Love this adventure fantasy with archeology, history, and magic!!!! Dragons, elves, giants, and an amazing magic system!!
Brilliant, action packed, and well thought out. Just when you think you know what's coming, you find out how wrong you are. The second installment of The God Stones series is just as good as the first. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
The action in this book kept me on the edge of my seat. It isn't a stretch to say the characters are my faves of 2023. The world has a post-apocalyptic feel, but seeing it as it unfolds. A well-done piece of work!
This book picks up right where the first book left off and then - here we go! Gripping, page turning, non-stop adventure. This series promises to be awesome!
As always Otto never fails. My friend, your series is amazing. The action/adventure in this book wow, just wow amazingggg!!! I look forward to the rest of ur series. Thanks for the amazing story.
Wow!! The action is non stop and I couldn’t stop listening to the audiobook. I listen while I sew for my small business and I found myself not wanting to stop sewing so I wouldn’t have to stop listening to the book. I can’t wait to start book three.
