A hot young witch has moved into a big, cold, city…
Blair Barrows and her sister, Maeve, have finally done it. They’ve saved up and left their small town and moved to New York City. It’s been their dream to move to the Big Apple for a long time. They’ve looked forward to being young, single career gals in the big city. These two are more than just roommates though.
They’re witches.
And together with Blair’s feline familiar, Felix, they’re taking Manhattan by storm! Sure, Blair’s job may be a dead end role with no respect when all she wants to be is a journalist. But there’s hope. And it’s sure to be exciting, right? Absolutely. In fact it gets a little too exciting when Blair and Maeve find out that their landlord, Gary, was murdered the day after they moved in. Sure, he was a creepy guy with a gambling problem. And sure the mob might have been chasing after him. But the circumstances in the murder don’t seem to add up.
Almost as if it was something supernatural…
Now, Blair, Maeve and Felix, along with Christopher, the wolf shifting detective on the NYPD team up to solve this case before the killer strikes again. Along the way, Blair will need help from her BFF, Daniella – a hummingbird shifter journalist – as well as a large and exciting cast of characters that will help Blair live up to her full potential.
This is book one of the Hex and The City series and concerns the Barrow sisters, Blair and her younger sister Maeve, who have moved to New York City, Blair for a journalism job and Maeve for college. They are both witches and have left their small town life and parents behind for their dream of living in the Big Apple. They have arranged an apartment, but end up having to walk past a very sleazy apartment manager called Gary, who tries to hit on them, every time they have to pass him. He seems to have loads of different women in and out of his office and mixes with weird guys under the stairs, to play cards or deal drugs, or more! Blair’s job isn’t quite as exciting as she hoped it would be, writing fluff pieces about top ten lists for ridiculous items. At least the person showing her the ropes, Jessica, is friendly and puts her at ease. Another new starter the next day is Danielle, a hummingbird shifter, who also becomes a friend.
When Maeve finds the body of their apartment manager Gary, dead on the stairs, the sisters get to meet one of the local police detectives, Christopher, a wolf shifter. Together with Felix, Blair’s cat familiar. Blair tries to start investigating the murder, wanting to stop her sister’s nightmares about the dead body she found. They find that Gary owed money all over the place, had a serious gambling problem and was mixed up with a local mob family as well. Not a nice guy, but he didn’t deserve to be murdered. The first and most obvious suspect ends up trying to run from town, but Blair manages to stop him. One manages to realise her secret, that she is a witch, even though they aren’t magical themselves, but had a previous partner who was, and could sense her use of magic to get into his apartment.
It seems something supernatural is afoot and she may need to use her magic to help find who killed their landlord. . More suspects come from the dead man’s previous girlfriends, one from a mob family. Jade Monsanto is suddenly a main suspect when evidence is found in her flat, but something about it, strikes Blair as being too easy and she looks into the matter further. She ends up putting herself into a dangerous position and soon almost becomes a murder victim herself! She gets to like investigating and helping Christopher with his case, and soon gets an offer from him, to continue using her magic to help him with his next case as well. More to come obviously in the next books of this series. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Blair Barrows and her sister Maeve got out of the taxi and entered the old brownstone. They had finally made it to New York. Blair accidentally knocked the cat carrier into the back of the taxi and Felix, her familiar, spoke some words into her mind. Inside, they stopped at the landlord’s office for the key. Gary Kemp was fairly repulsive but thought he was dashing. Felix offered to cough up a hairball in his underwear drawer.
As Maeve headed to campus, Blair walked to her new office. She had visions of writing great journalism, but realized from her itinerary that she was going to be writing little more than boring clickbait articles that few would read. At the end of the day, Jessica from work called her to invite her to go for pizza. After their dinner, they walked back to her building, only to see police cars with lights and sirens pull up. Detective Christopher Farrow tried to stop her until she said she lived there. Maeve was the one who had found the body – their landlord, Gary. Gary had dealings with some very unsavory people. Blair would have been surprised if his death was simply a drug overdose as was mentioned.
At the office the next day, Blair met a new employee, Danielle. She knew right away that Danielle was a hummingbird shifter and was glad she wasn’t the only magical being here. When she returned home, Maeve had another nightmare, the second in two days. It was enough to encourage Blair to investigate this murder herself to ease her sister’s stress.
Finding out that the NYPD detective is a wolf shifter, Blair and Christopher, who seem to have some chemistry starting between them, join together to try to find out what happened to the landlord and why. Along the way, Felix and Danielle assist too. Will they solve the case before anyone else gets killed?
This was a fun story with many characters the reader gets to meet. The series promises to be lots of fun with the supernatural flavor that will pull the reader into the mystery. Grab your copy and see if you can solve the case as the clues are uncovered!

This was fun story to read. You will not be sure of who committed the crime until closer to the end of the book. There are some interesting characters introduced in this series. Blair and Christopher have chemistry, see what happens next with them. There is a lot I didn't write about in this book, I am not spoiling it for readers. I recommend reading, it is a written at a good pace, there are some really good moments. Looking forward to the next book.

Having read one by this author before and enjoyed I thought when this one caught my eye-why not? Yeah I also caught it at the beginning of a series being that is kinda a yea or nay most time for me anymore. We have Blair and Maeve whom have ventured out, living together and also being witches. The sisters also it seems have a nose for trouble but not that they would look at it that way. They come across that their landlord had been murdered. They do have help with Blair's Felix and the detective Christopher. Not to forget her BFF Daniella whom with the others bring life to this paranormal mystery. They have to be on their toes too because it is unusual and they could get in the mix of being dead too. These are the kinds of stories that are needed to get into and spend a bit of time in to take a load off of the nonsense of a day.
Aside from the unpleasant conversation with Gary, their creepy landlord, Blair, Maeve, and Felix are excited to move into their apartment in NYC. However, after Maeve finds Gary’s body, Blair decide to find the truth behind his death to ease her sister’s terrifying nightmares. She must develop new contacts, deal with unexpected danger, and avoid the disapproval of the Detective in charge, Christopher Farrow. I enjoyed the witty writing style and the quirky characters which make this mystery a great start to this new series. I especially loved the humorous Karaoke spectacle.

I loved this book as well as Corrine Winters books. All of her books that I have read have been awesome. In this book Blair and her sister move to the city. They thought this would be a great move on their part, however they found out the hard way on their first day there that nothing is simple. As always there is a murder for them to solve. Will they find out who killed their landlord or will the case become a closed case?

When sisters Maeve and Blair move to New York for work and school, they didn’t anticipate a creepy landlord with serious issues, shifter friends with complicated lives, and work as a journalist that is a bit more boring than Blair hoped
School for Maeve sounds interesting
The hunky shifter wolf detective sounds more fun
Much ado in the big city

When witch sisters Blair and Maeve achieve their dream of living together in New York City, the murder of their building super puts a damper on their enthusiasm.with the help of some new friends, her cat familiar and NYPD officer/wolf shifter Christopher Blair is able to solve the mystery. Interesting characters and suspects made thus a fun read. Looking forward to the next book! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
There were so many fun surprises that Blair found out about after moving to NYC with her sister, Maeve. Some people were more like her than she thought. I really liked how close she was able to get with her new friends so fast. The characters were all so much fun. Even the murder suspects weren’t so awful. I’m hoping to find out what secret her familiar is keeping in the next book!

Witch sisters Blair and Maeve have finally made their way to New York City. Their landlord, who is a real piece, is found dead the next day, by Maeve. Blair, along with the shifter detective, their familiar and a host of other paranormals, must find out what really happened. Loved the way the characters interact and the banter is so good. This is a story, too good to put down.

Corrine Winters really knows how to attract a new reader as her writing is so intriguing that I couldn't wait to finish reading the book so I could call all of my friends to tell them to get this book I was amazing and I cannot wait to read the next book.

Blaire and her sister move to New York into an apartment complex when they find out their to touchy, feely complex manager is found dead. Blaire starts to gather clues, even though shes not a detective, to try and solve this mystery... Only problem, their are several people who had a run in with the guy and each one of them is a suspect.. A nice cozy little mystery..
No one writes cozy mysteries like Ms. Winters. The characters are well thought out and realistic. The story flows from scene to scene with a touch of magic, mystery, mayhem and romance. The book held me in suspense from beginning to the end. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
This book is a good start to a new series. The story moves at a good pace and the characters are definitely interesting. A mix of magic and the.mob, witches and shifters make for a fun read.

Another good bewitching tale of the sisters. Each on separate paths that entertained the storyline admirably. Once you get started reading you are unabled to put this book down. Lots of twists and turns with unpredictable trails. Leaves wanting for more of this refreshing read. I received ARC copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
I hate when authors can't be bothered to describe their characters. I want to know what they look like! We don't know how she dresses, we don't know what she looks like, we don't know how old she is! Only thing we know is that her "sister" has long blond hair and dresses conservatively. I say "sister" because we don't even know if this is her real sister or not. The author mentions in passing something about a foster home and the "sister" isn't magical. So, she may not be a blood relative.
Clearly this book is supposed to be the witch version of Sex in the City. Carrie Bradshaw was a stunner with fashion sense. This character doesn't seem to be either of those, then again, we have no idea how she dresses or what she looks like!
Also, what the heck is an elderitch?
The whole plot of this book is ridiculous. We are to believe that a NYC detective is reaching out to some civilian for help with police investigations? The author didn't even bother trying to make any of this realistic. There were so many holes in the plot. None of it made sense! I found myself shaking my head so many times throughout the book. It was that bad.
It read like one of those fan fiction things that people write up on forums. It was that horrible. I actually had to force myself to finish the book. I'm upset about that whole thing, I had high hopes for this book. What a waste of time of a couple hours in my day.
I find the high number of 5 star ratings for books that I don't enjoy all that much....weird. Are they honest reviews? I'm starting to have my doubts.
