If you want a permanent smile tattooed on your face and feeling the boiling warmth surrounding your heart and slowly melting it, this is the best absolutely feeling good book choice you never want to miss!

As a writer I easily understand how giving birth of a book as painful, nurturing but also challenging experience so it’s so easy to relate with Sara Grayson who needs to learn to live bolder and to write more audacious. I felt her suffer, her insecurities, the pressure on her shoulders, her desire to create something close to perfect to realize her mother’s dying wish by finishing her series in her own way.

Cassandra Bond is a shining star of Ellery Dawson series, loses her battle to pancreatic cancer at young age without finishing last installment and her last dying wish is her daughter Sara’s finishing the fifth book.

Sara has already lost her courage a few years back when she tried to write her first novel which was brutally criticized by Phil- owner of the Iris publishing company her mother has been working with for years and her mother’s last lover.

She’s trapped in her greeting cards writing business, 32, divorced after 6 years long marriage as her perfectionist sister Anna- Kath is having an exemplary happy life with her beautiful house, healthy lifestyle, two smart kids and rich, successful husband.

Now she is forced to finish her mother’s legacy. But let me rephrase everything for you to understand how intimidating her job is gonna be: the fourth book of the series is sold 15 million copies at its first month ( her mother literally kicked Mr. King’s precious ass) and the movie adaptation shattered the box office numbers with $450 million ( equal to Star Wars: the last Jedi’s 2017 opening numbers)

In no way she can manage to do that! And she’ll tell her decision to the meeting with the publishers but when she is insulted by Jane- working under Phil, rigid, perfectionist, experienced publisher of the company, she loses it and she decides to take the challenge and write the book even though it means she will shed every gracious, creative potential including her blood into those papers.

But Jane has every intention to sabotage her work by assigning a new editor to her who might die on her.

So Sara gathers her courage to take a trip to NY to meet Phil and admit why she stopped writing and why she truly needs his help to write a great book that her mother would be proud of .

In the meantime she has to face with her past and so many family secrets, including Meredith Lamb who has inherited millions of dollars after her mother’s death. That woman sued her woman decades ago for plagiarism! Could her mother steal another woman’s work and give her hush money to prevent a scandal ?

She realizes that writing something in her heart will take courage and if she has to create something remarkable she has to connect with her roots to relate with her character’s origins which takes her a journey to Maine where her mother did most of her writing job and to England to solve the great mystery of her family!

This book is refresh, inspirational, powerful, helping us face our inner fears, past traumas and teaching us the art of moving on, living audaciously without looking back! We’re literally told to be MAN UP!

The characters are amazing. Romance parts are heartwarming, emotional! My feelings are everywhere. I cried. I laughed. I sang. I danced. I cheered. I high five-d with random people at the street. This is freaking amazing!

I think from now on I’m truly volunteered to read anything the author writes! This is one of the best women’s fiction read I’ve read this year!

Oh the AUDACITY!

How could Sara’ mother, Cassandra, as her dying wish, ask that her daughter write book five-the FINALE to her best selling suspense series, Ellery Dawson-when the most Sara has written in the past has been greeting cards and cutie coupons?

NO PRESSURE!

Book four only sold 15 million copies in its first month, and still sits at #1 on the bestseller lists- a record setting 21 weeks later. The movie, based on the first book in the series shattered the box office numbers opening weekend earning $450 million!

Armed with a lack of confidence and only her yellow lab, Gatsby, (who failed to pass as a Companion Dog from the Louisville Companion dog School) to cheer her on, Sara is about to say NO.

But, when Jane, the publisher from Iris Books insults her at lunch, it motivates Sara to prove her wrong, and she finds herself saying YES !

The story is peppered with emails and newspaper articles, as part of Sara’s journey to find her voice, and all of the family secrets, before her looming deadline.

I didn’t find Sara to be neurotic, as the blurb suggests, and I thought based on the title and OH SO FABULOUS! book cover that this book would be funnier.

Instead I discovered a FRESH premise with a RELATABLE lead character in Sara, and more of light but empowering story about a woman coming into her own, after her mother gave her the greatest gift-her belief in her, and her talent! 🎁

If you enjoy books about books, bookish people, the writing process, and the Publishing world, as I do, then you will enjoy this book as well!!📚

The Audacity of Sara Grayson
Joani Elliott

Five Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Audacity of Sara Grayson is a debut novel by author Joani Elliott. The word that was drifting through my brain while reading this book was inspirational. I found Sara’s journey from an insecure greeting card writer to writing the fifth novel in her mother's best selling literary series, a joy to read and follow. This book is witty, emotional, humorous and exciting. I was hooked from the very first page until the very end.

Publishers Blurb: What happens when the world’s greatest literary icon dies before she finishes the final book in her best-selling series?

And what happens when she leaves that book in the hands of her unstable, neurotic daughter, who swears she’s not a real writer?

Sara Grayson is a thirty-two-year-old greeting card writer about to land the toughest assignment of her life. Three weeks after the death of her mother—a world-famous suspense novelist—Sara learns that her mother’s dying wish is for her to write the final book in her bestselling series.

My Take: I think it’s because I identified so closely with Sara’s insecurity and her feelings of inadequacy that made this book such a joy for me to read. The author (in a DEBUT novel!) created such realistic characters that I was able to feel their emotional journey along with them. I felt Sara’s journey was empowering, and inspirational.

The writing flowed nicely and the author mixed humor and wit alongside the drama and emotions of the characters. As I said before, I was totally hooked from the first page to the very last.

Sara’s journey also led her to some family secrets that helped the pacing of the book. I couldn't wait to find out what was so important to hide from her, and these secrets kept me turning the pages until I found out everything.

My recommendation: I highly recommend this book, especially to anyone who feels insecure or inadequate sometimes. (and who doesn’t?)

Wow. And I say WOW again!

What a book. This book is perfect for a vacation read, but it is a little 'heavier' than normal for a beach read. It has everything you need -mystery and a lot of that, romance but not the main focus, learning about what writers go through to get a book out there, a bit of villainy, a lot of sisterly love, and frustration.

One of the oddest things for me is that this happened to one of my favorite authors -she passed away before finishing the last book she was writing. I never thought about what it took for the 'replacement author' to finish what the original author started. So this book really made me think.

The only complaint I can say that I have is that the author talks about something in a safety deposit box, but we, the readers, never get to find out just what was in there! I thought that there might have been an epilogue explaining that, but alas, no!

Sara Grayson’s mother is the famous best selling author, Cassandra Bond. When she dies her will stipulates that Sara is to write the fifth and final novel in her Ellery Dawson series. Sara is an annoying character, self absorbed, unobservant, seemingly uninterested in her family and in a slump after a divorce. Once I’d got used to her character I really enjoyed this novel. There’s a few complicated family mysteries along the way and many of the supporting characters are more complex than I expected. There’s a bit of humour and I really liked the literary quotes at the start of each chapter. An entertaining read.

I will post a review on my blog on May 25, 2021 at https://www.jenabooks.com/category/pr...

Looking for a book that will keep you in your beach lounge chair until the sun goes down? Well, put on plenty of sunscreen and grab “The Audacity of Sara Grayson”. You’ll love this book- each and every paragraph sparkles.

The book has an audacious premise. Cassandra Bonds is a mega-successful author. (Think Jackie Collins or Danielle Steel). She has written many bestsellers and her latest “Ellery Dawson” series is universally acclaimed. But author Bonds dies of cancer before she writes the fifth and final book in the series, a book that the whole world is holding its breath for. Of course, her publisher will now have to choose a new author to write the final book. Except- Cassandra had a different author in mind- her daughter. Her “dying wish” is that her daughter Sara write Book 5.

We first meet befuddled 32 year old Sara at the movie premiere of “Ellery Dawson”. Sara’s gown was supposed to be emerald green but the dress shop goofed and sent her a gray dress. And that fits Sara’s image of herself. She is gray, lost, confused. Fortunately, she has a lovely family, and they see more than a vague, puzzled girl in gray. Sara’s Mum the author is kind, wise and caring. She taught her girls to make a “comfort drawer.” Sara’s older sister Anna-Kath is focused, organized and fondly protective of Sara. Their British Dad died when they were young, and they all remember his loving, creative presence. Each character in this book is so real.

Sara spends much of the story trying not to write the book. Her thoughts are quirky and humorous as she deals with the publishing world and her mother’s death. She also discovers some mysteries about her sweet family. “Audacity” means to be willing to take bold risks. As her words come to her, she learns that she doesn’t have to be bold. She just has to know herself and believe in herself.

This is the debut novel for author Joani Elliott. And this book is a success that Cassandra Bond would have envied. This story is a deft mix of the craft and business of writing, with a gently humorous romance for Sara, and a few mysteries. Each chapter begins with a writing-related quote, which delighted me, too.

Many thanks to Meryl MossMedia and Post Hill Press for an advance digital review copy. This is my honest review.

Sara is such a likable character. She is full of self doubt and overwhelmed at the thought of filling her Mother’s shoes as she is grieving This book takes you on her journey to get out of her own way and become the author she was meant to be. There are wonderful quotes from various authors at the start of each chapter. They support the struggles that Sara encounters in finding her own voice. Along the way she meets Nic, dealing with his own heartache. He is a poet, teaching at a small college, unable to leave his circle of comfort. I didn't quite believe how quickly their relationship progressed, but it didn't ruin the story for me. There are mysterious circumstances surrounding provisions in Cassandra’s will which will lead Sara to question her parent’s marriage and Cassandra’s integrity. She travels to her Mother’s house in Maine and her childhood home in London in order to find her words. And finally she finds closure, redemption, confidence and love.

Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy.

I enjoyed this read and easily recommend.

So for some reason, when I requested this on NetGalley, I thought it was a romance. It’s not a romance. Or at least, not mainly a romance. Thankfully I really enjoyed this anyway!! Sara is a great main character and I love her because she seems so real. Her personality is fun, but also stubborn and a little quirky.

I love the mystery of Sara’s parents and that she has to do all kinds of digging to find out what the heck happened and who wrote what. Lots of drama and some hilarity with a touch of love. I can’t get into the details of her search without spoiling that part, so I’ll just say it’s very intriguing and kept my interest all the way.

Throw in a cute man, a dog, and a grumpy old editor and you’ve got yourself a fun read! While there’s a ton of drama and bad blood going on, this still managed to make me laugh out loud as I fell for the characters and the story. If you’re not hooked by the time Sara takes on the book, then I’d be super surprised. So obviously I recommend this one all the way. Mostly to those who enjoy new adult reads that are flocked with drama, humor, and a little romance. But love is definitely not the main focus here!!! Sara and her audacity are just too fun that you can’t help but adore this read!!

Thanks so much to NetGalley, Meryl Moss Media, Post Hill Press, and Joani Elliott for the opportunity to read this for my honest and unbiased opinion!!!

Imagine if a very famous author was your mother - someone like Agatha Christie, for example. They have an incredibly lucrative and entertaining franchise going on. This franchise has sold around 50 million copies worldwide and there are movies made on it and everything.

Then, before the last book in the series comes out, the author dies. And they leave a letter asking you to complete the last book.

This is exactly what happens in The Audacity of Sara Grayson.

Sara is a 32-year-old who teaches English to hungover students and tries to get side jobs for writing Cutie Coupons and greeting cards. Her husband has left her, taking the waffle-maker with him, and he even fought long and hard for the dog.

Sara has totally given up on life and is just pulling along when her mother's letter - delivered 3 weeks after her death - is put in her hands by their attorney.

Obviously, Sara is devastated. She CANNOT write a book, such a successful one at that! And she meets the publishers to convey just that. But she changes her mind at the last minute and suddenly, she is burdened with the HUGE task of completing the franchise. The audacity!

Plus, there is the matter of the large trust amount entrusted to someone called Meredith Lamb.

Sara has a deadline and now she has to work with the editor she hates most in the world. Will they be able to get over their differences and come out with the book in time? Will the publishers accept it? Will Sara be ever able to match up to the talent of her mother?

I loved the way Sara tackled her issues. They are very realistic. Gatsby was a sweetheart. Sara's sister, Anna-Kath is the pillar of support every person needs. Phil was excellent, exactly how an editor should be. Nik made me feel warm and content.

I loved how things played out and how Sara untangled various knots in her family while managing to move from self-pity to a confident woman. The support she got from all the people in her life made me happy.

If you are looking for a feel-good, coming-of-age book, read this one. I requested it because of the beautiful cover and look at me, not disappointed at all!

4.5 audacious stars for Sara Grayson.

Thanks to Netgalley, Joani Elliott, and Post Hill Press for the ARC.

This cute Rom-Com cover does not do this book justice! The Audacity of Sara Grayson is packed with humor, drama, mystery, and a few jaw dropping moments. Honestly I was sold when I saw the cover with the girl reading, but I was invested in this story all the way to the end. Books about books are my favorite and I loved the characters in this book along with quotes from famous authors to start each chapter. 5 star read for me!
Writing is like sausage making in my view; you’ll all be happier in the end if you just eat the final product without knowing what’s gone into it-George R. R. Martin
Sara is in a slump with work and really life in general. She once dreamed of being an author but writing greeting cards and doing side work for Cutie Coupon is not what she envisioned. When Sara’s mother died she left behind many unanswered questions and her final book that needs to be written. Cassandra has written four bestselling novels and this nurse turned author has a huge following. In her will she has left instructions that Sara must write book five. What?? Sara tried to write a book before and it was a complete failure! How can her mom ask this of her, she simply cannot do it! Can she? No she can’t!
As Sara starts to uncover secrets in the family she feels she owes it to her mother to do this one last thing for her. Sara’s father died when she was only seven but from what she remembers her parents had a fairy tale marriage. Both of her parents were well respected in their careers and have left behind a legacy still left to be uncovered. Just as Sara gets started writing, erasing, and starting again book number five will be in question. Someone claimed years ago that Cassandra stole her manuscript and the case was settled and sealed. With question’s circling as to whom will write book five these rumors have resurfaced. Sara knows her mother would never do the things the lady is accusing her, but with a 25 year non-discloser everyone close to Cassandra is keeping quiet. In search of answers and hopefully ideas for book five Sara sets off on a journey that will take her back to her past as well as a bright new future.

What a heartwarming read! Sara Greyson is one of the most relatable characters I've ever read, her journey in this book was so genuine and touching. How would you feel if your mother was a best selling author and book 4 in her series sold millions of copies and she names you as the writer that must write the finale in the series? Sara's struggles, grief, disbelief, and anger are so understandable in the first half of this book. As she comes to accept and continue on her writing journey after a lot of doubt from the publisher, she finds herself and comes to terms with a lot in her life and it was very inspiring. I was so invested in the story from the beginning and didn't want to put it down.

I'm not a writer but reading this perspective really made me appreciate authors even more than I do now. Every once in a while you read a book that sticks with you and has a permanent positive influence in your life. As a reader this will make me take a step back when reading, even if its a book I may not be enjoying, and appreciate the work that goes into the books we read, love, hate, love to hate and everything in between. I definitely recommend picking this one up!

Thanks so much to Netgalley, Meryl Moss Media, and Publishers for the opportunity to read this book, all opinions are my own.

In my pursuit of good stories, I haven’t exactly given much thought to the blood and sweat that authors put in to produce their wonderful works of fiction. For non-writers like me, The Audacity of Sara Grayson will give you pause, making you admire your favourite authors a little bit more.

One year after her divorce, Sara Grayson is still a hot mess. So imagine her shock, when after the untimely death of her super-famous author mom, Cassandra Bond, she finds out that her mother has charged Sara with the task of writing the final book of her five-part thriller series, which is touted to be 'the most anticipated book of the decade.' Though she outrite refuses at first, an insult by the publisher forces her to rise to the challenge in the heat of the moment. But now that she has accepted, she has just seven months to write it. And with the disaster that was her first book ten years ago, will Sara have the courage and confidence to go through with it?

I have always assumed writing to be something that came naturally for authors - like a free flow from heart/brain to paper. The plot reveals Sara's struggles to answer her many questions regarding the main character in her book, her writer's block, the repeated writing and shredding of chapters... it sounded extremely exhausting and painstaking. More than a rom-com, this was a story of how her family's trust in her, helps Sara in slaying her demons and finding herself and her lost passion for writing.

The characters in this book were awesome. Everyone needs a sister like Anna-Kath who was Sara's loudest cheerleader and a best friend like Binti who was her sounding board. I especially loved the character of Julie Knott for her loyalty to Sara and her mom. The writing style made you laugh out loud at times and feel Sara's frustration as your own, at other times.

Overall, a heartfelt tale of love, relationships and self-discovery. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

For me, the blurb oversold this book. I expected more drama, more secrets, more of everything really. Maybe I should take that back. I didn't need more of Sara's writing process or annoying behaviour.

Sara's mother passed away after a short battle with cancer. Her mother was a very accomplished writer with a multi-million dollar writing empire that of course also made its way to the big screen. In her will, Sara's mother stipulated that she should write the final book in her most popular series. Sara is a very good underachiever and loves talking herself down, or at least that is how it seems. She seems to wallow in self-pity really. I really don't care for her as the main character, she gets on my nerves. The premise of the story is interesting, finishing up a very successful book series while trying to find out why your mother made this ridiculous request. Sara needs to be nudged into doing great and positive things in her life, even simple things as eating other things than ready-made meals that you heat up in the microwave. I got invested in the story of the books, what happened to the main's father and her realtionship? It's something that is mentioned so often, but we never get a resolution. We get a resolution to Sara's story, finding herself while uncovering some family secrets, but it falls rather flat in my opinion. And even those resolutions leave me as a reader with some questions that need an answer. I don't think the writer intends this book to be a first in a series, so I don't get it. Of course, it's fine to leave some things unresolved, it's life and not everything has a beginning and an end. But the storylines that are set up in this book and basically left unresolved deserve an ending, and I need it for the overall enjoyment of the story.

The author could have easily cut down some of the repetitive writing days, or neurotic searching days to make room for some developments on the other storylines. It's a shame to set up interesting storylines and to just leave them hanging. So the idea is nice, the setup is ok, the main character is a pain in my ass, which leaves 2.5 stars for this book.

Genre: Women's fiction

It took a bit for me to get into the right frame of mind to enjoy this book but once I did, I found this debut novel delightful.
It follows the main character Sara as she navigates life after the loss of her mother. At the beginning of this book, Sara has low self-esteem, is heartbroken after a divorce and drowns in self-loathing and is maybe even a bit depressed as she's never had the courage to try to become a writer as she always dreamed.
On the other hand, her mother was a famous mystery writer with international fame and her older sister a very accomplished mother and wife.
Upon her mother's death, she is tasked with writing the last book in her mother's world renowned series about a female detective. In parallel, together with her sister, Sara needs to untangle a mystery related to her family's past that makes her question all she's known to be true about her parents.
With a fresh writing style, a lot of self-deprecated humor and a well fleshed out main character, this book is about finding that inner voice and courage to pursue your dreams even if the shoes you're trying to walk in may seem to big,
Great debut novel!

Bookish Books are always some of my favorites. I have always enjoyed books that included stories about authors and publishing, and I really enjoyed the overall premise of this story.

While this did have a bit of a slow start for me, I think that it was important to lay the foundation for the backgrounds of each character and how their stories and lives progressed and intertwined.

I really enjoyed the idea of these characters needing to reconnect to their pasts before they could move forward. I have often felt that focusing too much on the past can just drag me down, but sometimes it can also be just what you need to realize why you are where you are.

ANYWAY, many thanks to Joani Elliott for sending me a copy of her book and for the lovely note sent inside! I really enjoyed this story so much, and the little trip back to London was great too :)

“What happens when your mother’s dying wish becomes your worst nightmare”

I would never have thought it possible that I would be awarding a book from the genre of Contemporary Women’s Fiction 5 out of 5 stars, let alone adding it to my Goodreads ‘Favourites’ list! But how could I not, when I became so invested in both the storyline and characters, that I simply didn’t want for it to be over, so that I would have to stop reading!

As a debut book by a new author, Joani Elliott writes with complete confidence, consummate ease and total authority, as I was led by the hand in exactly the direction she needed me to travel, whilst she stimulated all the myriad of emotions she wanted me to feel along the way.

There were so many more great snippets and words I wanted to share from the story, however some of them might have given away too many hints of ‘spoilers’, and to be honest, I was too busy reading, that I simply forgot to pause and take stock. Besides which, the writing was just so good, that I wouldn’t have known where to stop with the featured lines!

Those opening lines and quirky cover art, lured me into a book, equally strong in both storyline and characterisations, which hit the ground running, and then never let up on the pace until that last word of the final page really did mean it was all over and I could breathe again. The well signposted chapters were short and punchy, which was a real antidote to counteract some of the very muddled and confused thinking of our troubled lead protagonist, Sara Grayson, and kept everything moving along fluidly and seamlessly. The chapters also each began with a quote from many different well-known authors, carefully chosen to invoke a real feeling of time and place, thus setting the scene for what was to follow and all adding to the richness of the assured, observational and descriptive narrative, together with some excellent conversational dialogue.

A well structured, multi-genre, multi-layered story, beautifully textured, written with desperate intensity, yet with genuine heart and balanced with some real moments of laugh-out-loud humour. I followed Sara as she strived to unravel and make sense of, the complicated life her family had led, unbeknownst to her, and the blind and binding faith placed firmly and squarely on her shoulders by her deceased mother, to complete the final book of her unfinished series, with the instruction to be audacious!

Part love story, part mystery, part self-actualization, this is a story to indulge in and escape into, although I was never totally at ease, as I really felt for Sara throughout her challenging and often agonising journey of self-doubt and low esteem, knowing from personal experience, exactly how she was feeling. The realization that much of what she had assumed about her family history hadn’t quite been as black and white as she had thought, opened the floodgates of emotion, as lies followed half-truths; fiercely guarded secrets led to self-doubt and jealous accusations; complex family dynamics caused uncontrollable angst and trauma. Ultimately however, these experiences, shared with people she both loved and respected, opened heart and mind, thankfully resulting in Sara becoming the self-assured person and intuitive writer her mother had always known was buried deep within her.

An authentic cast of wonderfully defined and drawn characters, joined Sara on her journey of self-discovery and filled the pages with some larger than life actions, amusing anecdotes and complex dynamics. I found myself relating to each and every one of them, despite, or maybe because of, their many raw and passionate vulnerabilities, which only added to their genuine and believable interactions.

If you enjoy books about books, bookish people, authors, the writing process, and the publishing world, then you are sure to enjoy this one as much as I did. It almost made me feel that I wanted and more importantly, was skilled enough, to write a book of my own – Okay, only for a few moments, but that’s alright by me 🙂

he Audacity of Sara Grayson is Joani Elliott’s debut novel, and it’s a winner. From the characters to the interesting storyline, setting(s), and mystery it pulled in me from the very beginning.

Sara Grayson is thirty-two, divorced, and teaches writing. She also works a gig writing greeting cards. Once upon a time she dreamed of becoming a writer. A respected critic of her first novel shattered her self-confidence, and she pushed writing aside. When her mother Cassandra Bond, the best-selling author of the Ellery Dawson series dies of pancreatic cancer, her dying wish is that Sara writes the conclusion to the series.

The story that unfolds had depth, genuine characters, and a flow that carried you along as it hooked you. Sara is our protagonist, and the story is told from her perspective. Along the way, get to know her sister, Anna- Kath, Phil, her mother’s lover and the man who critiqued Sara’s first novel.

We spend time in the city before escaping to a seaside community in Maine. We also spend some time abroad. We watch Sara faces her insecurities and begin writing. The author made us privy to her struggles, self-doubt, lack of faith from the publisher, and her attempts to identify with Ellery Dawson. At first she tries to emulate her mother but while good, the story lacks spark. Of course, Sara isn’t Cassandra and must find her own path. As the story progresses, she learns about herself and experiences personal growth. It was brilliantly done and allowed me to connect.

A thread concerning a scandal and secret kept from the sisters was interesting. I love how the author weaved it into the storyline. It flowed wonderfully and caused this reader to shed a few tears.

We get a touch of romance with a few surprises. It was sweet and felt genuine. Even though this wasn’t the primary focus, the author gave the romantic interest with a backstory that tugged at my heartstrings. I enjoyed time spent developing their relationship.

The ending did not disappointment, and I closed the book with a smile and a tear. The Audacity of Sara Grayson is the perfect beach read for book lovers and fans of women’s fiction. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Cozy and enjoyable. Loved the bits about writing. The family drama though was underwhelming. Overall I'm probably just salty because I can't hit pause on my life to write a book in stunning surroundings 😂

First and foremost, a big thank you to NetGalley and Meryl Moss Media for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

“Words arrive at my doorstep. Raw. Awake. Alive.
What can I offer to make them stay? A clean room, plush towels - a soft bed?

No, they whisper. You are the room we want. Weave us into your soul.
Let us become your breath, blood, bones.
Conjured, infused and enmeshed…”
.
Some books will make you cry, some will make you laugh, some will simply touch your heart, some will teach you, and some will give you a new perspective. This one does everything!

It's one of the most beautiful books I've read in a long time. This book went straight through me. It was like a breath of fresh air. The story sunk so deep in me, that I kind of wished it never end.
.
Sara Grayson, who lives with her dog Gatsby, is faced with the most difficult assignment of her life when her mother succumbs to cancer. Her mother, a well-known author with a large fan base, wishes for her daughter, Sara, to finish the bestselling series she began, citing this as her dying wish in her will.

Sara, torn between her mother's dying wish and her own fears of writing, spirals out of control. She must confront her fears and uncertainties and devote her whole being to this novel. However, with an impossible timeline and a publisher who is sabotaging her every move, Sara discovers that moving into her mother's shoes will not only be a life-changing and exhilarating experience for her, but would also risk unearthing family secrets she was never meant to discover—secrets that would jeopardize her mother's legacy and the very book she is attempting to write.
.
The book has all the elements, from wonderful dynamic between the characters to an engrossing story line. It’s a story within a story, with exciting plot twists at every turn. The process of discovering oneself through the process of writing, was well-depicted and was extremely reviving. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter seemed so apt and brought a special touch to the novel. The writing is lucid, ingenious and vivid.

A small part of the plot was left unanswered, and the end seemed sudden; part of me hoped it didn't end at all. My emotions were all over the place. I laughed. I cried. I applauded. It’s a beautiful novel. This book is enlivening and inspiring, teaching us to confront and overcome our fears in order to live audaciously, to "Man up!". The bond Sara and her sister Anna shared was absolutely wonderful. The romantic bits were heartwarming and emotional. I sincerely hope there will be a sequel. I'm curious what comes next in Sara's life. What did their mother leave behind for her and her sister, Ann?

I'm waiting to get my hands on a physical copy. This is one of the best works I've read this year! I guess I have pledged to read everything the author writes henceforth!

Thank you NetGalley, author Joani Elliott, and Post Hill Press for giving me a free arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
5 stars
The Audacity of Sara Grayson is a debut novel by author Joani Elliott and what a wonderful first book.
This book follows the journey of Sara Grayson and the fulfillment of her mother's final wish, which is for her to write the fifth and final book in her mother's wildly popular book series. I really liked the characters and how well developed they were. Each character had a connection to the other in some form or fashion. I especially loved the relationship between Sara and Phil. They had such a father daughter relationship by the end of the book. The writing and the pacing were well done. I really became invested in the process Sara was going through as an author as well as finding out more about the mysteries that surround her parents. In addition, I was rooting for Sara to write the book that her mother always wanted, her book!
This book has a little bit of everything. Some mystery, romance (but not the main focus), self-discovery, and the ties that bind a family.
The relationship between Phil and Nik was a little sad, but very realistic. Many children feel the pressure from their successful parents and this was well represented throughout this book.
Nik was such a wonderful male hero. I loved the relationship development between Nik and Sara. They both became better writers due to their connection.
I would have liked the author to reveal what was in the safety deposit box , but I guess that is left up to the reader to wonder what was in the box.
The ending left me well satisfied and happy for how everything was wrapped up!
Overall, I would recommend this book for those who have ever had the desire to write a book or are looking for their next vacation book. I can't wait for the next book published by this author!

Although not as lighthearted as the book cover art would lead you to expect, this book has plenty of humor in it, as well as a lot of grief and soul searching and thoughts about how you can lose your dreams but maybe find them again.

I loved reading The Audacity of Sara Grayson: A Novel by Joani Elliott. From the beginning, I knew it would be interesting and I could hardly wait to really get into the book. Sara Grayson and her sister Anna=Kath are mourning the death of their mother. They had planned to be with her through this journey until the end, but she slipped from this life while both girls were away from her room. Now Sara has discovered her mother who was a best-selling novelist has left a request for Sara to write the final, book five, to her popular Ellery Dawson series.
Sara teaches writing, but she has not been successful in making the connection of words, emotions, and characters come alive. She has decided to refuse to write the novel and let Iris Books assign a writer for her mother's final book. When Jane Harnois insults Sara at a meeting between the publishers and editors, Sara suddenly decides to honor her mother's dying wish and write this book. Sara thinks if she goes by the draft or preliminary manuscript her mother has finished, it should go smoothly. Sara soon realizes there is no draft or even notes for the unpublished Ellery Dawson Book Five! She doubts her abilities and so does most of the staff of Iris Books.
Sara learns a lot about herself and finds there are secrets in her father and mother's past. How far will she have to go as she seeks answers? Can she pull out of her fear and write the best she has ever dreamed possible to honor her mother's legacy?
I did have some problems reading with the NetGalley Shelf App. The font was extremely small, and I could not highlight various passages as I was reading. It was awkward trying to read on my phone, so I hope NetGalley will make some adjustments to this app.

Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC of The Audacity of Sara Grayson by Joani Elliott.

It's been a long time since I was unable to put a book down, since I craved finishing it because I needed to know where it was going -- but that's exactly what The Audacity of Sara Grayson was for me: an unputdownable book that felt like a fiction companion to some of my favourite non-fiction writing books.

In the weeks after her mother's death, Sara Grayson - an aspiring greeting card writer - gets word from her mother's lawyer that Sara is to write the last book in her mother's landmark series, Ellerly Dawson. With immense pressure and no amount of writing confidence, Sara must unravel some family drama, some lies she's believed for a long time, and actually write the book.

There are so many things I liked about this book - there were aspects of Sophie Kinsella, Mhairi McFarlane, and a little bit of a Gilmore Girls feel here. The way Elliott writes the sister relationship between Sara and Anna-Kath made me gasp and laugh out loud at how similar it is to my relationship with my sisters. It's a book about writing, about family, about second chances, about trying things we long told ourselves we couldn't do. I laughed, I gasped - I did it all.

I will say, there were a couple of spots where I thought the book was going one way and then a character would get abruptly dropped, or swing in a different direction. It wasn't enough to make the reading experience not great for me, but that might not be the case for everyone, so just a heads up.

I give this four stars straight for content, but an extra star for being unable to put it down.

The Audacity of Sara Grayson is by far one of the best books I have ever read. If ever there was a character I could relate to, put myself in their shoes, it is Sara Grayson. As a young girl/woman, I would write so many stories and think and talk about writing all the time. However, as an adult, you get busy and chase after other pursuits, which I did. This book makes me want to write...which I've always enjoyed but just never did as an adult.

This story really spoke to me, like deep down brought words to my heart. Sara experiences tragedy on so many levels, most of all losing her mother. She discovers she is expected to write the last installment to her mother's best selling series (now a major motion picture), and is immediately floored. Sara has never written professionally like her mother. Insecurity sets in, but she is spurred on to tackle the challenge when other forces work against her.

Over the course of the seven months she has to complete the project, she and her sister are faced with potential scandal around her parents. There are more questions that answers, and if she doesn't uncover the truth, she may not can finish her project. Along the way, she meets surprising new acquaintances and finds that the words are there, she just has to open the door for them.

If I have ever recommended a book to anyone, this would definitely be the one I would say you have to read! I received a complimentary copy of this book, and the opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This latest book by Joani Elliott looked great from the cute cover but I didn’t care for it. Sarah’s mother is a famous author who passes away and asks her daughter to finish her last book after she dies. I found myself skimming pages and stopped at 27%. I found it all rather boring. Not for me. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review.

The Audacity of Sara Grayson is hilarious, heartwarming, shocking, and I could not put it down!! I had a permanent smile on my face while reading this and I am recommending it to everyone I know. 4.5/5 stars!!

Sara Grayson is a burned-out, recent divorcee, writing professor who happens to be the daughter of the top selling author in the world, Cassandra Bond. Her thriller novels starring Elery Dawson are at the top of the charts, but when Cassandra passes away without having written the finale to the series, it is up to Sara Grayson to write it. Does she have the audacity to finish the finale in the world’s biggest series?

I ADORED this book!! I can’t believe how glued to the pages I was when reading it. It made me laugh out loud, get teary-eyed, and gasp in shock. While Sara Grayson was trying to write the highly anticipated finale to her mother’s series, we also get to see her unravel the mystery of her family and just how convoluted it can be. In the beginning, I was a bit off-put by how cranky Sara seemed to be, but as the story went on, I grew to love her deeply. We learn so much about Sara and her life, and it was incredible getting to see her grow as a writer and a strong woman.

Every chapter starts with a quote from a famous author, and I just have to say that the quotes were beautiful. It was such a great idea having all of those (very very inspirational!!) quotes to go along with the writing. I also really loved how the format of the story would sometimes switch between prose and text message/email/news reports. I found it so engaging and felt that it went perfectly with the context of the story.

Also, can we all appreciate the unsung hero of the book: Sara Grayson’s Massive Work Bag. Shoutout to you!!

I have to include my favorite quote of all: “…she understood now that the moment she stopped creating was the moment she stopped living” (Elliott 394). This book was incredibly inspirational to me and made me think that, maybe one day, I could be an author too! I hope whoever reads this review enjoys reading this book as much as I did!

Big thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book to review!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Don’t be fooled by the cover of The Audacity of Sara Grayson, this book is not a light romp or rom-com. It is a sweet book about a serious matter with some romance thrown in. Audacity is defined as “a willingness to take bold risks.” Sara has been a divorced underachiever for most of her entire life. Sara’s widowed mother on the other hand is an acclaimed writer of multiple serial novels that are tremendous best sellers. Think Louise Penny. Sara dabbles in writing commercial copy and coupon ads but even this endeavor renders her inept and lacking ambition. In short, Sara lacks purpose in life. Her mother has been keeping a big secret from her two daughters, she is dying of pancreatic cancer and they don’t find out until she has weeks to live as she has taken great pains to keep it confidential. Mom has a reason; her 5th and final book of her most successful series is due for release in a year and the public can’t know of her illness. Eventually, it can’t be put off, (she dies), and her 5th novel is incomplete. In her Mom’s will and publishing contract, she nominates Sara to finish the 5th and final book. This shocks everyone because Sara has never published anything. In the process of undertaking this monumental task, she undercovers secrets, fear, grief, lost relatives, romance, compassion, purpose, confidence, and love. This book was exceptional, and I want it to receive more attention. I could NOT put this book down. The cover looks comical and I wish the publisher had not used this type of artwork. The book is inspiring and also a good education on the art of writing. I hope you will read it; It’s that good. #writer #wrting @joani.elliott #joanielliott #theaudicityofsaragrayson @netgalley @posthillpress

"It's strange how quickly we reduce ourselves - and others- to one sliver of life's performance when our lives are so much bigger than that."
First off, what a wonderful story . Once I started down its path, I could not stop reading. The characters have so much depth with multi-dimensional interactions between not just family members but between friends. Each character has a history and backstory of their own. A story that the reader wants to know. Hint: the 6 degrees of separation discussed between Cassie and Sara early on in the book returns several times. Everything in the book is interconnected and flows seamlessly and interestingly ,never seeming forced in any way. I love when that happens.
The book would be great for a book club- there are so many points of discussion: family , loss, recovery, secrets, audacity, finding ourselves and our path to happiness, home, jumping to conclusions, strength and weakness, choices and risks, seeing that one small part of a person or their life is not their "life" and the art of a writing life. Great discussion starters. I was inspired by the quotes from writers at the start of each chapter- those alone are thought- provokers.
Everything about the book was pitch-perfect. I was in a bit of reading slump and this was just the book I needed. I highly recommend it . Thank you NetGalley for this wonderful ARC.
