When an urgent telegram arrives from his mother, begging him to return home, old West photographer Percy Bruner can’t refuse. After an almost five-year absence, he dreads returning to the small eastern Oregon town of Hardman where he grew up. He’d dreamed of raising a family there, and loving his sweetheart until they were both old and gray. But with her gone, the only thing the town can offer him is painful memories.
Now that his family needs him, Percy must face the ghosts that continue to haunt him, and make the hard choice of letting go of his past or giving up on his future.
Will his return the place he once loved give shattered hearts a chance to heal and make a special Christmas wish come true?
Full of small-town characters, sweet romance, Christmas cheer, and second chances, The Christmas Wish offers a heartfelt holiday read sprinkled with humor and hope.
A hopeless romantic with a bit of sarcasm thrown in for good measure, Shanna Hatfield is a best-selling author of clean romantic fiction written with a healthy dose of humor.
In addition to blogging and eating too much chocolate, she is completely smitten with her husband, lovingly known as Captain Cavedweller.
Shanna creates character-driven romances with realistic heroes and heroines. Such a sweet story. These characters aren't without heartache and sorrows though. But I enjoyed watching them start to heal and find joy and peace in the world around them. One of them disappeared to deal with his grief and the other found ways to find joy and peace around her and in lifting others up.
Percy and Anna were a sweet couple. They were friends but through loss and sorrow in their community they both had to find a way to deal with that grief. Percy came back to Hardman even through the reservations he had. It was the best thing he could have done. He needed closure from his loss. There are so many people in this small community who were so happy to see Percy again. This is the first book of this 9 book series that I've read so I didn't recognize any of these characters from previous books. But I loved the feeling of family they created with each other and their community.
There was a sweet love story that budded between Percy and Anna. I enjoyed watching them come to know each other again after so many years and that their friendship was still there after a long absence. They had some struggles that were happening in their community as well that they worked together to solve. I knew that I didn't like a couple characters for a reason. ;-) Not going to say who, I'll let you figure that one out. But just get ready for some fun surprises.
Anna's grandpa was a fun character and I loved seeing him also have some closure and finding joy through his friendships. And Percy's parents were very loving and kind.
If you are looking for a sweet book of healing and peace, a sense of community with your characters and a tender love story, this is one for you!
Content: Clean. Some mild moments of peril.
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I wished I had lived in Hardeman a hundred years ago. Shanna Hatfield truly captures her readers with her lovable characters. It’s always a reunion feeling every time we get to stroll through this series. Whether you’ve read the entire series or just part of it, Shanna has the gifted ability of making her readers feel part of the Hardeman community. Brynn and Percy were meant to be. God works in mysterious ways, often we question why something happens, lives are upended, and even lost. He always has a plan and he knows exactly what each person needs. This was the true message I received from this incredible and gifted book. A perfect Christmas story of happiness, friendships, and love.
Yet another great read by Shanna Hatfield. The Christmas Wish is the Second book I've read in the Hardman Holidays series and it was just the book I needed to boost my spirits as only Shanna Hatfield can do! Percy Bruner has avoided going back home to Hardman for five years but he gets an urgent telegram from his mother beckoning him to come home. Hardman is the last place he wants to be, much less for the holidays. Percy is afraid of facing the ghost of his childhood love and all the people that remind him of her and his loss of her.
A beautifully written, feel good, holiday romance novel as only Shanna Hatfield can write. You'll fall in love with the characters in this book and look forward to getting to know them thru this book and the entire series! I love Shanna Hatfield series and getting to return to communities that I know and love to see what is going on with all the characters she writes.
Loveable and fun characters that ties you to the story. A town that endured a lot of loss and grief will pull on your heartstrings and wrap around your heart. I enjoyed how the town came together and seemed more like one big family because of what they had been through. The budding romances were fun and joyful and best described as a healing balm. The author does a fantastic job of building the romance between the characters who share in grief at their loss of loved ones. I could see and feel the coziness of the bookstore with all the love that was poured into it and the sweet cat Teddy. This is a beauty to ashes kind of story that pours sunshine onto every page and keeps you rapidly turning pages. Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Loved this sweet romance. Percy has been gone from his hometown for 5 years. So when he is called home by his mother to help, since his father was hurt, he didn't really want to go. See he lost a young love long ago, and hadn't gotten over it. But he does his duty and goes back home. Brynn is a sweet girl who writes secret wishes for those in need. There is some action in this book also. HEA.
A story with love, hope, patience, that is a touching & moving romance. Great characters & small town charm. Percy & Brynn, have both experienced loss in their young lives. Percy, is finally home after 5 years. The one place he would prefer not to be because of all the memories. Brynn, lives her life everyday. Giving of herself to her grandfather, business & the community. But she never expected to see Percy back home again. If you love holiday romances, I highly recommend this book!!
I’ve just boarded the train for Heppner…In a few hours I’ll be returning to Hardman!!! In The Christmas Wish Book 9 in the Hardman Holiday series, Percy Bruner is headed for the last place he wants to be…back in Hardman. But he couldn’t refuse his mother’s plea for help. Memories were around every corner, in the bakery, the schoolhouse, and in every familiar face. With his grief still as fresh as the day he lost the only girl he’d ever loved, he only plans on helping his mother with the mercantile while his father recuperates from an injury, and keeping to himself. But with the magic of Christmas in the air anything can happen. Caring for her grandfather, helping in the community, and running the stationery stores keeps Brynn Rutherford quite busy. It’s not the life she imagined herself living. Having lost her parents, her beloved grandmother, and her very best friend, Anna, she is pleasantly surprised to see Percy Bruner back in town. Setting out to renew their friendship, she finally admits to herself she had always been in love with him. Once again, Ms. Hatfield has woven an uplifting Christmas romance from the charming town of Hardman, Oregon. Though it begins with the remembrance of grief and loss, the author’s writing expertise pulls at the heartstrings while pulling the reader into the story of friendship, a commitment to others, and a budding romance. By including heartfelt “wishes” which Anna composes and leaves for others in the community, they were a sweet, unexpected twist which Ms. Hatfield executed so well. It’s always a joy to return to Hardman to catch up with the lives of the Granger, Stratton, Decker, and Guthrie families. Grab that quilt, a cup of spicy holiday tea, and settle in for a heartwarming romance. Full of wonderful characters, holiday cheer, and a happily-ever-after The Christmas Wish is not to be missed! P.S. Ms. Hatfield, I am eagerly awaiting news of Erin Dodd and Toby Guthrie’s romance in the-not-so-distant future!
Five years ago, in Hardman, Oregon, influenza hit the town, taking the lives of many loved ones. Among them was Percy Bruner's first love, Anna, and the grandmother of their friend Brynn Rutherford.
Immediately after Anna's burial and unable to deal with all the memories there, Percy left to go live with friends of his family in Portland. When he receives a telegram from his mother stating his father has been injured and he is needed at home to help run the family mercantile business, Percy must return to face the past.
Percy was expecting that being back in Hardman would cause him to be consumed by thoughts of Anna, but he is also finding himself drawn to Brynn. Percy had not known that Brynn was going through her own grief alone, that her grandfather had given up on life and left their store for Brynn to run all by herself, and that she felt she had lost Percy as well.
Shanna Hatfield brings another warmth-filled story just in time for the season with The Christmas Wish, Book 9 of Hardman Holidays. Percy and Brynn's character traits made them a perfect couple. As always, Ms. Hatfield's gift with descriptions brings everything to life, and the inclusion of "new inventions" was fun.
I received a free Kindle copy of this book. I volunteered to read it and write a review. I purchased a paperback edition as well.
Such a sweet story about losing loved ones and continuing on with life. Percy left after he lost Anna and hasn't been back to his hometown. He misses it, but there is too much pain there. When he receives a telegram from his mother that she needs him right away, he has to go back and face everything. There is so much about his hometown that he has missed and he is finding it easier to be there the more he interacts with everyone. It seems everyone in the town lost someone to the flu. Brynn lost her beloved grandmother but she also lost Anna. Anna was her best friend and Percy was her friend too. She lost both of them at the same time. With Percy back in town, they rekindle their friendship. When that friendship turns into more, Percy backs away. He made a vow that he would never love anyone like he loved Anna again. What if he loved Brynn and he lost her? Can Brynn change his mind?
One of the things that makes all Shanna’s books, especially the historical ones, so good is the fact that she doesn’t shy away from including heartbreak. As awful as it is to suffer & see those we love suffer, heartbreak & pain is a part of our reality. It’s what we do with that heartbreak & pain that makes us or breaks us. Although I was sad about the loss of Anna, she always seemed to be too good for this world, almost like Beth from Little Women! I think she would have loved the fact that her two best friends found love after loss, while honoring the friendship & love they all shared. Truly inspiring writing!!! Thanks Shanna!!! 💞💞💞
Oh my, what a beautiful story in Hardman, Oregon. I love this town and its fun people. Great friends and they have fun and work hard. One young man left town in his teens when the love of his life died in an influenza epidemic in town. He was also sick but had to check on her and he found his love, and all but one sibling and her parents gone. He saved the one sibling who now lives with another family. Our hero now is much older, but when he left Hardman to try to forget, he never wanted to return to his family or the people he used know. He ends up going back to help his parents but really doesn’t want to and has no idea how he will be greeted. He has to go home because his dad was hurt and needs to stay off his leg as it was broken. One person would love to see him if he ever came home, so when she does see that he is actually there, she makes sure she runs into him. They were good friends and she was a best friend with his beloved. When he sees her, he realizes she is definitely grown up and very beautiful but he had made a vow to himself never to marry since he couldn’t marry his beloved. This has a lot going on from here on out and it is a wonderful story that begs to be read. There also is some funny stuff going on that no one has a clue about it, so this has romance, danger and a lot of fun with these people of this town. I highly recommend this awesome and enjoyable story. I was given a copy to read, but not to review. I loved this story so much I wanted to do a review to let others know just how awesome this story is so they might want to read it. It is really fantastic and I didn’t receive anything for this review.
Percy Bruner never wanted to return to his hometown of Hardman. Too much pain and loss lived there. But after his father broke his leg, Percy returned to help at the family's Mercantile store until his father's leg healed. He wasn't prepared for the memories that threatened to drag him into the depths of despair. He couldn't escape the memories soon enough. Brynn Rutherford lived with her grandfather over the Hardman bookstore. Survived was probably a better description. After the death of her grandmother from the influenza that destroyed many of the families in town leaving parents without children and children without parents she was forced to swallow her grief and take over the running of the bookstore or face being thrown out on the street. Will Percy's and Brynn's mutual loss bring them together or keep them apart?
I loved returning to Hardman. It felt like catching up with old friends, seeing how they are doing years later. Percy’s story was very heart touching. He has gone from such a young boy full of life, love, and mischief to a very somber young man. One who has closed himself off to love and even distanced himself from his own family. Returning to Hardman is very difficult, even though he must do it to help his parents. However it could be just what he needs to truly let go of his past and open himself up to a future he never dreamed of. This story is full of great joy, great sadness, intrigue, and some twists and turns that caught me completely by surprise. You can never go wrong reading a book by Shanna Hatfield!
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review
Another great Christmas in Hardman, Oregon! Percy and Brynn rekindle their childhood friendship when he returns to town after five years. Their love story is a sweet tale of loss, finding love again, and family. You will love the town and the extended family that they are to each other. This story has the characters from earlier books in this series and reminds you that even though you get older you don’t always grow up! Don’t miss this story written in Shanna Hatfield’s excellent style with great history, mystery, wonderful characters, and of course romance. This is a standalone book but after reading this one you will want to read the complete series so you will know the stories of the other characters. Don’t miss this sweet Christmas romance from Shanna Hatfield!
I felt like I was returning to a familiar community with this latest story in the town of Hardman. This story started with the recounting of grief, and my heart broke for Percy his life had an unexpected turn. But the expert writing pulled us into the journey and through friendship, belief in the best of others and growing love we see a happy ever after for Percy and Brynn. This story left my heart content and satisfied while greedily wanting the next installment of the series to read now. A book I am most happy to recommend you read!
Five years ago Percy lost the love of his life with illness took her life along with many others in the town causing him to leave but when he is needed by his family he comes back to help. Brynn also lost some family but she is help run her family store all the while helping out anyone in need. The last thing they expected is to be attracted to each other. Loved this sweet hometown romance after they all suffered some tragic times but this Christmas is turning out to be a happy blessing.
The Christmas Wish: I liked how Percy loves to capture the right picture. I liked how the characters teach each other new things or how to do the job correctly. It was great to read this historical story and see what characters do in a different era. It takes you to a different time and takes the reader away from the present. It was a wonderful romance and a sweet story! I really enjoyed it and Shanna Hatfield did a great job of writing.
Percy received a message from his mother for help. He needs to come home because his father had an accident. He dreads to go home because it will only bring back the hurt from his past. But when he meets Brynn, the best friend of his childhood sweetheart again his heart opens but can he leave the past and his guilt behind and hope for a HEA? This is a sweet entertaining story with very lovable characters who deserve love after a hurtful past. Shanna is an amazing story teller.
I so pleased that Shanna wrote another book in this series. I have fallen in love with her characters (or most of them, wink, wink). This is Percy and Brynn's story, and it shows his journey from the grief of losing the love of his life, to realizing that his heart can heal and open up to a new love. This was a very heartfelt story showing that even with life's losses, life does continue on. If you open your heart, anything is possible.
This is a sweet, loving, adventurous, and exciting story that begins with many unhappy memories of a great love lost and never to be regained. Shanna Hatfield has filled this tale with with page turning excitement, much love, happiness and a bit of humor. This is the last of the Hardman series and is one of my favorites and I believe will be one of yours as well.
I loved The Christmas Wish! Although it is Book 9 in the Hardman Holidays series, it is the first I have read. The entire series is now at the top of my Christmas list. I love the characters, the town, the story, the romance...everything. The only part I don’t like is that I can’t live there!
I received an advance copy and all opinions are my own.
When Percy is called home to help with the family business because his father is out of commission, he really dreads it. He had left several years ago because of the great loss he experienced. Brynn still lived there and he was determined that they would remain friends. Great story of love, loss, and forgiveness.
I loved this story about loss and wishes for a full and loving future. After an epidemic left many loved ones gone, those who remained struggled to continue, including putting love and joy back into their lives. Cattle rustling threats added to the adventure of this sweet romance.
The last current book in the Hardman Holiday series and it didn’t disappoint. I can’t say much without giving things away, but this one was heartbreaking and hopeful. This series is one of my favorites that I’ve read - I can see myself coming back to these characters and this town again and again. Loved it!
I has been very invested on Anna and Percy. My heart sunk at the start of this story thinking something has happened to they're love. This was a beautiful but hard story. A at ending and wise words of advice in the middle. Of this series, this story it's may favorite.
A Christmas Wish: A Sweet Historical Holiday Romance ( Hardman Holidays Romance Book 9)
A wonderful story but be sure you have the Kleenex handy. It was lovely to read about all the Hardman families again, especially Percy. I loved that he found his happiness.
Percy almost broke my heart. A solid love like that just gives a person hope. Letting go of the pain to open up for a new love in the middle of danger is exciting and challenging. This was a true fairytale. Book gifted to me.
This is a sweet Victorian Christmas romance. Percy and Brynn are great characters and you can’t help but love them. The town of Hardman is great. It makes the reader wish it was real and want to visit it. I really enjoyed this book. It is a warm fuzzy read.
I love stories with dual plots that entertwine. When Percy is called home, he dreads going because all he feels is there are bad memories, but it's time to make some new memories.
