Dominik Esparza is a Research Agent for the ASPCA (A Society for the Prosecution of Cryptids and Assorteds). He spends his days categorizing demons, poltergeists, and the occasional rogue jackalope. Then he makes a mistake on a case that results in several civilian deaths. He's given a supervisor, Field Agent Danielle Belasco, and a new to locate his best friend's sister, who was at the epicenter of his disastrous case and is now missing.
I love mythology and fairy tales (those form the basis of about 60% of my current projects), Pacific Rim, Firefly, The Avengers, tea, Welcome to Night Vale, and chocolate. Recently, I've had several short stories (and soon novels!) published by the wonderful Less Than Three Press.
Though I write mostly fantasy and romance, my first and main love will always be horror. A few years ago, my grade-school librarian came up to me at work and said it was nice to see me again. I was surprised she recognized me, considering how many kids she'd interacted with over the years, and she laughed. "True, but not many kindergartners come up to my desk wanting to borrow Dracula, dear."

Remember when you were a kid and were totally convinced something was under the bed? Scary stories told at a sleepover or by the campfire named the fiend as The Boogey---, umpppfff. Hey, let go already …I know you aren’t supposed to say his name, but I have to at least hint at it. Well, it so happens, The Boogey---, and a large assortment of other things that go bump in the night --- are real. Every last one of them.
In “Cryptids and Cauldrons: The Sisters” by Stephanie Rabig you’ll get to meet a few of those creepy creatures, maybe even pet one or two. More often than not though you’ll be running and screaming in the opposite direction!
I love flawed heroes and heroines who have strong convictions about doing what they believe is right. And one of my now favorite authors, Stephanie Rabig, has protagonists that are always in the right but certainly not perfect. Sometimes they make bad choices but not when it counts… usually.
Dominik Esparza is a Research Agent for the ASPCA (A Society for the Prosecution of Cryptids and Assorteds). He spends his days categorizing demons, poltergeists, and the occasional rogue jackalope. And he owns a book of dark enchantments, rituals and summoning’s.
His best friend’s sister, Kim, “borrows” it for a Halloween Party at her dorm, but the containment circle has a tiny gap, making it incomplete. The demon they summoned breaks loose and there is utter chaos and carnage, with many of the young women in attendance killed in just minutes. When the body count and identifications are finalized, they realize that Ben’s sister is missing.
From here we are plummeted into the lives and exploits of those sworn to protect humankind from the horrors guaranteed to give you nightmares. As members of the ASPCA (A Society for the Prosecution of Cryptids and Assorteds) they hunt monsters for a living. Many of the hunters have special powers of their own passed down from generation to generation: witches, seers and the like.
I read through “The Sisters” in one sitting, then immediately picked up the next two in the series, “The Witch” and “The Showdown”. I devoured those over the next two days and I’m hoping that the author, Stephanie Rabig, has plans to release another in the “Cryptids and Cauldrons” series very, very soon! While these don’t have cliff hanger endings, they do continue with essentially the same characters and story line, so I suggest reading them in order.
