Get off on the Pain

Rate this book
Alternate cover edition of ASIN B00T3FLFAC

Sexy, tattooed and inevitably dangerous. Memphis is all that and more…

I live for the pain; it’s what drives me to keep moving. But there comes a time when one has to push the demons aside in order to survive.

I thought I buried them deep. I thought I was ready to finally live. Until… my brother, Alex; he throws me into the fire—right into the place I could never control myself, the one place I never want to be again.

When I put my hands on people, they get hurt. Things happen that bring me back to that night. The one that will forever torment me.

I’m doing fine, keeping to myself in order to ensure no one gets hurt by me. Then along comes Lyric, and all I want to do is touch her, to put my hands in places that I know will only lead to her being crushed by me.

She’s the rush that I crave. The darkest of poison running through my veins, killing me bit by bit; like a drug I can’t get enough of even though I’m almost down to my last breath.

And being around her only hurts more, but what she doesn’t understand is that I welcome the pain; I get off on it, which in the end leaves me with the hardest decision of my life—one that might get us all killed…

Get Off of the Pain follows Memphis Carter- a broken shell of a man he once was, who’s just gotten out of prison and looking to start over with his life. He returns to his hometown in hopes distancing himself from his hellish ordeals and making anew.

Memphis is the brooding, mysterious, tatted, “don’t f*%k with me” types and doesn’t think he deserves any sort of redemption.

That is, until he meets spirited Lyric, a talented photographer and tattoo parlor worker, who doesn’t take any of his sh*% and pushes his buttons, tests his limits and brings him out of his comfort zone and out of his shell.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Memphis and Lyric are quite the pair as they bring the good out of one another kind of like each other’s ying&yang. They are raw, vulnerable, and jaded as the other. And most importantly, they make each other face themselves and confront their pasts.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Author Victoria Ashley does a phenomenal job pairing their background repertoire and undeniable chemistry together as everything was really well thought out, nicely executed, and evenly balanced throughout as they cope with guilt, pain, forgiveness, and learning how to live and let live.

A turbulent, emotional read that will tug at your heartstrings!

My Thoughts - Story
It’s that time of the year again when Victoria comes knocking on my FB Messenger asking for a review and I have to say that I look forward to little “ping” with her name popping up!

Did she disappoint me in 2015? Hell NO!! I was a bit leery about reading this book and reviewing for her since I’ve been on such a kick with psychological thrillers and zombie books.  What a switch and I wasn’t sure I would be able to get my head in the right mindset to rate this book correctly.

I think what attracts me to Victoria’s books is not just the steam factor when it comes to her sex scenes and the nonexistent filter she uses when writing about what happens in the bedroom or weight room or kitchen or shit…just about any place 2 people can fit together.

Her main characters on the surface seem so simple but underneath you find a very complex and intriguing psyche – just look past the perfect size 2, perfect tits or the big juicy cock on that tattooed god. Get under that guy (not literally – though I would like to do that) and read between the lines with what makes him tick. Then she gives us a comic relief character that pulls the reader out of the brooding antics of the male character.

With this story, Lyric is pisser, not in the funny sense but this girl has a set of balls on her bigger than Memphis’.  I do have to be honest and say that there were some parts where I did want to smack her and ask if she had any pride with the way she set herself up in Memphis’ life never taking No for an answer.

Now Memphis on the other hand, my heart bled for him. The unfair injustice that man had to endure for only doing the only thing he could. Yeah, he was dark. Yeah, he was angry and OK…there were times I wanted to grab his balls and yell at him for constantly saying he wasn’t worth having a good life.  But the more, I pondered this…the more it made sense – it added to his character and made him more complicated.

Our secondary characters, Bailey and Alex?  I only have to add here that it would be perfect if these two would end up together in another book.

Re-Cap
Memphis just finished up serving six years in jail and he has one goal in mind.  Get his brother and get the fuck out of town.  He wasn’t expecting his next-door neighbor to insert herself in his life. The more he tries to push her away, the more she becomes a permanent attachment.

Memphis must get over his guilt and dig deep inside himself in order to learn and live again. With the help of Lyric, he learns that he does deserve to fight in the ring for love and the forgiveness of his past actions.

Memphis Carter is a guy who lost everything six years ago. He has been through a lot in the last few years, and has issues fitting in with society. He returns home to Crooked Creek to reconnect with his younger brother who is his only family left. He is just trying to survive & stay out of trouble. Fighting has always been in his blood & he has to stay away from that destructive lifestyle & put his life back together. He wants to keep to himself & be left alone, but his beautiful sexy neighbor named Lyric just keeps coming around. He can't seem to get rid of her, but isn't even sure he wants to.

She becomes what he craves, and they start to develop real feelings. About this times his brother resurfaces & pulls him back into his old life. I enjoyed this book, & look forward to Alex's book next! :D

Memphis just spent six years in prison for something he swore he would never do again. Unfortunately, he always takes care of family. And now he has someone else he wants to protect.

Memphis is a bit of a hard nut to crack. He's really withdrawn into himself and for good reason. The problem is he thinks he's a monster and pushes everyone away.

description

Lyric doesn't back down from anyone and Memphis is no exception. It doesn't help that she can't seem to keep away especially since they're neighbors. And it certainly doesn't help that he doesn't stay away.

The story is told in alternating POVs and I really loved that. It really helps to know where they are coming from especially Memphis.

And they are both really steamy...it just takes a bit to get there. I was a little frustrated at it being dragged out since one of the reasons I was looking forward to this book was because of her other series, Walk of Shame, which is really steamy! I don't mind less but I guess I just wanted a bit more.

There's a lot of different sub-plots going on in the story and I really enjoyed how VA was able to twist them all together with the big drama at the end. Some of them were pretty heart wrenching such as Memphis' mother!

description

One of my favorites was the two brothers and how their relationship has evolved. Alex is a real sweetie and I can't wait for his story, Something for the Pain, coming out in July.

I really loved the ending but it seems I've developed a real dislike for stories where the H/h don't get much happy time till the end. I just would love a couple more chapters...is that too much to ask? ~sigh~

Ugh! I do not like this book. I was so hopeful when I read good reviews in GoodReads. But it turns out to be... bad.

The story is simple. Memphis, who has this mystery brooding alpha male, met his new neighbor, Lyric. Lyric is sweet, damsel in distress who swear a lot to cover her vulnerability. Which is lame in my opinion.

The executing of this book is really bad. No depth, no content, nothing. The chemistry between Memphis and Lyric is none. It feels like being forced. The sex is explosive but because of the minimum chemistry, it feels dry. And Memphis getting into my nerve by playing push and pull with Lyric. He wants Lyric but then non stop warning her about how dangerous he is. I think it supposes to be elevating the suspense. But it makes me irritated.

TITLE: Get off on the Pain
SERIES: (Pain, #1)
AUTHOR: Victoria Ashley
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
RELEASE DATE: February 2nd 2015
MY RATING: ★★★★

Like this authors other books this one is no different with the heat factor, this is off the scales HOT!!

Usually we're subjected to the hot and cold do I or don't I kind of female character well this one is a wee bit different as it's the male, I kind of lost count on the amount of times he told her to walk away, and like a glutton for punishment she didn't heed the warnings..But once they finally got their shit sorted it made for a steamy read..

I'm leaving soon, I've already hurt too many people and I don't want you to be another one, damnit. So Stay Away

The guys is f*cking confusing, first he tells me to stay away, then he kisses me, and then he ignores me.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Everything started with fighting and ended with it

He had the alpha male tendencies (do as I say) but you could see the struggle that took on his character once the walls slowly came down..

Danger and Violence was not the abnormal, but the norm for us
I live for the pain, it's what drives me to keep moving, when I put my hands on people they get hurt, I welcome the pain, I get off on it.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

As soon as she finds out about the monster I can be, she'll be gone, plus having her in my life could be dangerous for her

It's been approximately six years since I have been in the ring, it's part of who I am. The fight is in me and I never give up.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It all began with Ethan my father, if he hadn't become a sorry ass drunk in the first place then I would've never developed the need to fight and let out all my anger, he made me into the monster that I can't control

An angst filled drama about difficult choices, family and forgiveness.

Lyric is a tough, independant girl who says what's on her mind and takes no bullshit from anyone. She's working in a tattoo shop and living with her best friend ... basically just getting by in life. She does photography on the side, but is worried that she's losing her passion for the art ... Until she meets Memphis.

Memphis is a fighter ... literally and figuratively. He's just been released from prison and only wants to find his brother and then leave town to start over. He regrets his choices in life and is carrying deep regret for not being able to care for his mother through her final days of life ... And then he meets Lyric.

This story was sweet and overall, well written ... But I didn't really connect to it. For me it was just OK. The storyline was far too predictable ... I didn't feel any sense of urgency or concern for the characters ... I knew exactly how the whole thing would play out. And, unfortunately I really got sick of Memphis with his routine of: 'I'm broken & dangerous ... You need to stay away from me for your own good'. That got frustratingly redundant.

Not a bad story, not a fabulous story ... Just middle of the road for me. But I do see lots of promise in this authors work. She writes good steam and sass - I just want something a little more unique and a little less formula.

Holy Flaming Hot Ducks ! This freebie was not the lame duck I'd expected.

Memphis, just released from prison, returns home to find his brother missing, and a sexy renter living across the street. His issues leave him uninterested in the neighbor, at least he's goes with that for now. His first step is to find the brother he vowed to protect. Him and his brother have some serious ..stuff to deal with. These two have been screwed with by their father, the police and each other.

Lyric the sexy in your face girl across the street is not one to shy away from the alpha blow offs from one sexy beast named Memphis. He has something that is too alluring to avoid as she sort of wants to. He's a jerk, cold, hot and well a jerk but still she is the moth to the flame. Her job is too perfect, you'll have to read to find out what she does. She is tenacious, smart, never weak or humble, not a shrinking violet and I loved her.

The story is intense, the lust thick and not instantly quenched, but when it is it's steaming hot. I liked the long wait for satisfaction, earned is alway more pleasurable IMHO. Good read, I'll read more from this author.

Although I did enjoy reading this book...the constant push and pull from Memphis got old...

Yes, we get it Memphis...you are a bad guy and people should stay away from you...no need to remind us and Lyric of that every damn second!

description

I know he claims he's a bad guy, but compared to a lot of the alphas I've read about in other books, this one is as gentle as a kitten. Sorry Memphis, you talk a Good game, but I just didn't see it...

Where do I start with Memphis Carter?

Well, let's see. The beginning of this book totally hooked me. It was different. Memphis was not one of those characters that was mushy and gushy, instantly getting a woman's lady bits excited. He was a brooder, a silent type, and very much guilt stricken. He was broken over a past he never wanted. Memphis defined living a shitty life and having to make a choice he never thought he would have to make, leaving him with consequences that would drastically change his life in more ways than one.

What I loved about Memphis was watching him slowly open up even though he was more comfortable remaining within himself, constantly falling at fault for something he had no control over. To Memphis family was everything, and that is what makes you fall for him. He isn't selfish or an asshole because he thinks he's God's gift to the world. He's skittish because he thinks he's this horrible person, when really, he's a beautiful character.

Along comes Lyric....Oh boy. The girl that refuses to back down when told to get. Instead, she saw something that pulled her like gravity and her curiosity pushed her to obtain it, no matter what she had to do. I liked her boldness when barging into Memphis' life, making him communicate. The sexual tension between these two was so thick it was hard to breathe at times. I would be sitting here, editing, and reading along and then WHAM! COME ON....NOOOOOO. WHY MEMPHIS WHY? Stahhhhp being such a stand up guy and give in to her already. I voiced this MANY TIMES to Victoria when left hanging in this world of Memphis and Lyric sexing each other visually, but not following through. I think I actually said FINALLY when they gave in, because their chemistry was that intense.

The story that followed was not your average love story. The hero and heroine didn't immediately fall hopelessly in love. Memphis had a lot of torment deep inside that he had to work through, a lot of guilt left unanswered b/c of certain circumstances, but the story that followed was absolutely beautiful. The beginning was a beautiful build, but hit halfway through this story and I could NOT put it down. There were times when I was biting my nails, holding my breath, and reading even faster to know what happened.

The ending was absolutely amazing and ended on a perfect note. I am so very proud of you Victoria. The flow from chapter to chapter on this story was great. You guys will love Memphis and Lyric's story, because both have issues with family that makes them even more perfect for each other. Sometimes in life it's inevitable to avoid certain circumstances. We're forced to react first and then think later. We may have regrets, and we may wish day in and day out that we could go back and change it, but we can't. The beauty of watching a person grow is being able to take a front seat to them accepting what happened, forgiving themselves for the decision that was made, and to move on making their future better than their past. This was Memphis and Lyric in a nutshell. Check them out :)

Raw, Gritty, Emotional and Touching!!! After I have read Victoria Ashley’s previous books, Slade and Hemy, Get Off on the Pain took a different direction for me. This book was more an emotional journey of a broken man finding salvation and hope in a fiery spirited woman. Get off on the Pain, though sexy had undertones of relaying messages of hope, friendship, family, love, and finding inner peace.

#GETOFFTHEPAIN

Memphis Carter recently released from prison goes back to his hometown in search of reuniting with his younger brother. Back home, he has become an empty shell of his former self and desperately seeks to change. Change and hope came in the form of a next door neighbor. Lyric. Lyric is your feisty heroine who takes no bullshit and continues to challenge Memphis. The walls that Memphis built around his heart are slowly crumbled when she continues to push and force her way and slowly tattoo a part of her into him. Through the course of the book, Memphis and Lyrics finds comfort, support, trust, and love as they continue to show their vulnerable parts of their past.

Get Off On the Pain was indeed a raw and gritty book that chronicles two different people finding a balance in one another. If you are looking for a book, that showcases all the elements of the vulnerabilities, flaws, and the ability to let someone in then Get Off on the Pain is the book for you.

Wow! I am honored to be a beta reader and one of the first to read and review Get Off on the Pain!!! Victoria Ashley's books have a way of grabbing you and sucking you into the book from the very first page. I think it's the best book by Victoria yet! I have read this amazing book twice already just so I could jump into this story again!

Get Off on the Pain made my heart pump with a mix of emotions...happiness, frustration, anger, laughter, and sadness. It has a few twist and turns along the way too on this emotional roller coaster of a ride of a book...and I LOVED every minute! The writing is raw and spicy with descriptive words that jump off the page.

Memphis...oh...Memphis...tall, tattooed, muscular with that perfect 'V' body, sky-blue eyes, brown tousled 'just got laid' hair, a bad ass with a 'could care less' attitude...basically...a woman's walking wet dream! Plus...this bad boy rides a motorcycle and wears a leather jacket...can we say smokin' hot?!?

Lyric is a caramel-haired beauty with sparkling green eyes, tattoos, long legs, and curves in the right places...with a body that turns every man's head when she enters a room. Part tattoo shop worker, part photographer, she is sassy and a smart ass who doesn't take crap from anyone. Lyric may just be queen of the lady balls.

While hanging at home one night with her BFF and roommate, Lyric notices...more like stalks... sexy, panty-melting Memphis outside at the house across the street. After a long time away due to a tragic event that rocked his world forever, Memphis has returned home to his family for a fresh start and a second chance. As he arrived home after six long and hellish years, he saw Lyric for the first time and froze a bit like a deer in headlights.

"I have to admit, I was a little shocked when I saw her staring out the window at me, as if she wanted nothing more than to know me. She was looking as if she had no shame, even knowing I had caught her [see...total lady balls]; she just stared back. It took just that one moment for me to get lost in those damn eyes. I just need to remember to keep my distance, although, it shouldn't be that hard. I'm used to it."

Memphis has been dealt a crappy hand at life and has built a shield around his heart from his troubled and tragic past. But spitfire Lyric is a tough gal who has seen her own kind of hell growing up. Memphis doesn't frighten her. She can't stay away from this hot and brooding man of many layers who tries to repel her...but only draws her to him like a moth to a flame. He's her addiction.

"There's something about Memphis that draws me to him. Maybe it's his brooding personality, or the opacity of his emotions. He seems dark. That alone should be pushing me away, but it doesn't. It only gives me a thrill to find out more."

While Memphis has both a physical and emotional connection to Lyric, his heart still has walls...more like a damn prison. In his head...he's bad and dark...and not the guy for Lyric though his body and heart are starting to say otherwise. Therefore, he tries to push Lyric away from him and his past. Memphis wants nothing more than to keep Lyric safe as he feels he is nothing but darkness to her light. But she is slowing tearing down the walls around his heart.

"Once you start feeling, the pain never stops. Physical pain I can deal with; but emotionally, I cut myself off a long time ago...and being around Lyric makes me feel things I haven't felt in a long time: hope, need, desire, and selfishness. My need to be selfish with her and have her all to myself is too great to ignore.

Ever since she came into my life, standing there behind me on the porch that day, I knew she would be hard to forget. From her messy, caramel hair and pouty lips, to the fire in her big green eyes, I knew she was going to test me unlike anyone else ever has. I could tell she was a fighter just like me."

Lyric is determined to help Memphis forget about the pain....his and hers.

"He looks tormented, even in his sleep, and it hurts my heart, making me want to change it. Everyone needs someone. I want to be his..."

Hope starts to blossom, but Memphis and Lyric's painful pasts and other circumstances keep filtering in the air like a dark cloud...attempting to mess with their chance at happiness and peace.

"She makes me want hope; something I haven't wanted or felt in a while, a long time."

***I kindly received this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest review.***

I thoroughly enjoyed it! Lyric is a bad ass piercer and photographer that takes crap from no one! Memphis see himself as nothing more than a low life who has done nothing but let those he loves down his entire life. Lyric is determined to prove to Memphis he is wrong about himself and Memphis is determined to keep Lyric safe....and away from him. Will they bring out the inner beauty in each other? Or will they drive each other away forever? You'll just have to read it to find out. I enjoyed it until the very end. I even shed some tears throughout. Very beautifully done!

“I don’t know how to be gentle,” he whispers. “I can’t.”

Ohhhhh Memphis… YES!

…if you’re looking for a super-hot fighter romance- then look no further! Memphis Carter has arrived! Memphis raw and dangerous. Fighting is in his blood but it is also the one thing that has taken everything away from him. Six years ago, Memphis Carter fought a battle that costs him to lose everything he has ever loved.

Once you start feeling—the pain never stops. Physical pain I can deal with, but emotionally, I cut myself off a long time ago…and being around Lyric makes me feel things I haven’t felt in a long time. Hope., need, desire, and selfishness. My need to be selfish with her and have her all to myself is too grate to ignore.

It’s been six years since he has been home. Six years since he has seen his family and his friends. It’s the last place he wants to be but he has returned for one goal- to get his brother and then disappear. Memphis and Alex haven’t spoken in years but Memphis will stop at nothing to give his brother back the life he deserves.

What he didn’t count on was Lyric! OMG Lyric! I think I may have a tiny little girl crush on her. I floved her hard! She is strong and sassy and a fighter. She doesn’t back down. She has a heart of gold and yet will throw punches (or drinks) when it comes to those she cares about.

I don’t want this moment to stop. I want him to keep going. I know I’ve only known him for a little over a week, but I can’t help but to want him inside me, filling me and controlling me. I want this man, all of him.

Let me gush a moment on the name…or should I say names. I mean “Memphis and Lyric”…hellllooo! Most awesome couple name EVER! Oh, and did I mention that Memphis plays a guitar! Yes, a brooding man with few words and full of anger plays soft toned music sitting on his back porch for those he loves. I mean you might as well just remove your panties before you even start this book! He is that deliciously hot!

“You like that?” He looks into my eyes and starts rubbing his hand over his cock as it starts to harden inside his jeans. “If you want me to touch myself…” He looks at my bottom lip as it trembles. “Then just say so. I told you I’d do anything you asked.”

Lyric is warned away from Memphis from pretty much everyone in town- even him but one thing about Lyric is she doesn’t back down. She doesn’t listen to what others say- she will judge for herself and that’s exactly what she does with Memphis. She sees the devoted brother he is and the strong protector he becomes when danger gets too close. She knows there is more to Memphis’ story but he refused to let her in.

My heart constricts from this tiny kiss alone. It was a gentle, caring gesture…the one thing he said he was incapable of, but he just was.

“Touching you silences the demons more than the blow of my fists ever could. You are the peace that is going to save me; the one thing that keeps me breathing.”

He doesn’t’ want to taint her with his evil and beyond that, he knows that once she finds out who he really is- that she will leave and he isn’t ready to let her go just yet. He knows he won’t be sticking around but he wants to hold onto the little bit of good he has while Lyric is around for as long as possible- even though he knows it will fuck them both in the end.

“Stay.” He runs his hand up my arm, his nostrils flared, and his body tense. “I can’t promise I’ll make it through the night without wanting you to leave, but right now I want you here. You can stay or go.” I don’t even have to think about it. This man is full of passion. He may try his hardest to push people away, but even that he does with passion. I don’t know what will come of tomorrow but for tonight…I want to be right here, in his bed, and next to him.

MILD SPOILERS BELOW IF YOU READ MY FAVORITE LINES:

Favorite Lines:

Having her close to me is like a fucking drug easing my pain slowly, and brining me back to the present. All I want is to keep her near and…to live. She makes me want hope, something I haven’t wanted or felt in a while, a long while.
****
“You’ve already captured one of my passions.” He licks his bottom lip before biting it. “You might as well capture them all, Lyric. I just hope you can handle them.”
****
“Is this what you wanted? You want me to lose control with you?”
****
I feel myself blush as Memphis walks toward me and slowly pulls the blanket down my body, before removing the lens cap on my camera. “Fuck. The things I’m going to do to you.” Holy Shit.
****
“You like screaming for me?” He backs out and slams into me when I don’t answer. “You want me to fuck you like I want to? I’m trying my best to hold back, but I want to own your pussy, Lyric. I want you to take every…” He licks my ear before biting it and whispering, “inch of me.”
****
“Just let me do something right for once.” I feel my heart shatter from the pain in his voice as I snuggle into him and close my eyes. I don’t say a word. I don’t want to ruin this moment. It’s not very often that this man is gentle.
****
“I love having you inside me, Memphis. Take it out on me. I want to feel you.” I pause for a second from her words, before I thrust in deep and hard, but then stop. “I want you to fucking feel me, to trust me…and to never forget.”

4.5 "The Stain of the Sins of the Father" Stars! There are pivotal times in one's life when the actions of another can completely uproot our course in life. When pain turns to heartbreak, one man's self-identity is fatally tarnished. Once a soul has been damaged beyond a certain critical point, can it ever be healed? Or are those who fight to heal the pain, just bound to get hurt? Lovers of angst filled, new adult romances will not want to miss this story of the power of pain and love.

Just out of a several year stint in jail, for a crime that will forever change his life, sexy, tattooed Memphis is home for one thing, and one thing only: he needs to make sure his brother, Alex is taken care of.

While he is searching for his brother, at his family home, he bumps into his new, next door neighbor, Lyric. She makes him feel things he'd thought he'd never feel again; and tries hard to keep her at bay, for her own good. But Lyric, is not a woman who is easily intimidated, and before long they are both feeding off of each other's hungry desires.

Still, Memphis knows that his inner demons will eventually take their toll on Lyric--and anyone else he is around for that matter. Therefore, he remains determined to flee, once he can confirm that Alex is taken care of. Alex, however, has other plans for Memphis; and before long, Memphis is forced to tempt fate, in order to save his brother, which in the end may just be his salvation.

Is their possibly any future for Memphis and Lyric? Will Memphis realize the power of love before his obsession with pain defeats him?

What an emotional read! I love angsty, new adult romances, like Get Off on The Pain, that challenge your sense of right and wrong. Moreover, I greatly enjoyed Ms. Ashley's fascinating, character development of Memphis as he slowly discovers himself, and his true meaning in life. The romance is also well developed and passionate and hot! I can't wait to read more works from Victoria Ashley!

Abandoned at 15%. Total angst-a-thon, kinda boring, and no chemistry. Life's too short to keep pushing myself through a book I can't find any enjoyment in.

Onward to better and brighter reads!

OMG, OMG, OMG!!! Memphis and Lyric… I WANT MORE!!!

So, this is not your cookie cutter fighter romance. This book is full of pain, anger, fights, and enough smoking hot sex to cause a flood from the lady bits.

Memphis is out of prison and determined to find his brother and get the hell out of dodge. When he returns to his childhood home, he discovers the rental house on the property is occupied.

Lyric works at a tattoo shop as a piercer and a part time photographer. When she sees a cab pull up outside the neighbor’s house, she can’t help but want to get a better look at the hot guy.

“I’m f--king tainted Lyric. Running now would be your best option.”

When these two are fighting the sexual tension, it made me want to climb into the story and slap the hell out of them! Neither of them are willing to change their opinion, and that causes some very delicious tension and hot sex.

“I’m fighting so damn hard not to just f--k you where you stand Lyric. I can’t control myself around you. Do you get that?”

I loved how real both of these people are. They have demons in their past that are hard to let go, and for that it shapes their actions of today. When you can truly move beyond your past, it’s then you can truly see the future for what it can be. ~ Devlynn, 5 stars

~~~
“How can you help someone when you can't even help yourself? How can you fight when you're not even sure you want to win?”
This sets the tone for the entire book. I felt like I was on the verge of breaking down and crying from the minute I started this emotional journey. Memphis has got to be one of the sweetest characters I have ever fallen for. You witness him struggle day in and day out and your heart just breaks for him. He has built such a wall up around his heart it's almost unbearable to read.
But then....he meets 'take-no-sh-t' Lyric and his world changes forever. She is mouthy and tough but loves with her whole heart and she just so happens to have the right tools to break through that wall of Memphis'.
“I'm f--king tainted, Lyric. Running now would be your best option.”
She looks up into my eyes and wets her lips, fighting to catch her breath. “I. Want. You. To. Touch. Me. I'm not running anywhere.”
F--K! Those words do me in.”
You also get to experience the love between a mother and son. Anyone who has boys will understand the heartbreak in this book. My crying was a level 2 with this book; make sure you have a roll of toilet paper handy.
“I'll never forget those paintings you used to make for me every night before bed when I was ten. Do you remember?” He smiles small as if remembering. “Or the ones you used to give to me every year for my birthday. You were the strongest most talented woman in the world. Not a day goes by that I don't think about your smile or your laugh and wish that I could have been there for you.”
“I'm sorry. I'm so f--king sorry. Please don't hate me. I love you more than life,” I say with one short breath.”
All in all in was a great book. Full of emotion and of course, awesome sex. Be prepared to meet your next book boyfriend. Memphis will rock your world. I just have one thing to say, Victoria Ashley… I NEED ALEX'S STORY NOW!! ~ Stacey, 4.5 stars
~~~

First off, the cover...it's hot, right? Even though I don't picture him as Memphis, I definitely think the cover matches the intensity and hotness that is Memphis Carter.

But to the part that matters the most, the story. I thought this was beautifully written. I loved all the characters, even the secondary ones. Lyric is this strong heroine that doesn't take any sh-t. There isn't a weak bone in her body. But growing up the way she did, it's expected. She fights for what she wants and 9 times outta 10, she gets it.

Memphis, ugh, I love him. I just wanted to hug him throughout the whole story. He may think he was monster, but while reading you can clearly tell he's the furthest thing from it. He just doesn't want to believe it. He truly cares about his loved ones, which lands him in a not-so-great situation, but it's all worth it in the end.

Get off on the Pain is gritty and a little painful. But with that being said, it's still powerful and packs a punch. Can't wait to read the next in the series. ~ Keisha, 4 stars

~~~
When I found out that the lady who gave us Slade and Hemy was giving us a fighter book, I was super excited! And I had every right to be; this book was fantastic! While it still had some super sexy, hot scenes, it was much more intense and gritty. It made me feel all kinds of emotions!
Lyric is our heroine. She is strong, feisty, passionate, and independent.
“I’m ready for a ride so be sure to go fast. I doubt I’m anything like the girls you’re used to. Don’t hold back.”
She works as a piercer at a tattoo studio, but has a passion for art – photography and drawing. She is instantly drawn to Memphis from the first time she sees him.
I usually don’t let a man get to me this way, by Memphis…he makes it hard to think straight just from being in the same room as him.
Memphis has lived a hard life. He believes he is a monster and hurts everyone that means anything to him. He is drawn to Lyric as well, but constantly pushes her away, not wanting to hurt her. He is a fighter and that is his release, his own personal high.
I can already feel the release as anticipation of the blow consumes my mind, body, and soul. This is me. Call it sick, but I get off on the pain.
As we continue to see more parts of Memphis, it is so hard not to want to just cuddle him. He is so strong and such a protector!
When Lyric and Memphis finally get together, it is explosive.
“Memphis,” she says between moans. “F--king make my come.”
It is so emotional to watch the two of them together; to watch Memphis push everyone away, while Lyric refuses to give up on him. I loved every minute of this book, even when I was crying. The secondary characters were amazing as well. I loved Bailey, Lyric’s roommate as well as Alex, Memphis’ brother. I can’t wait to read his story! Thank you for another phenomenal book, Ms. Ashley! ~ Tiffany, 4.5 stars
Holy freaking hotness! If you’re looking for a second chance romance with steamy scenes, and an unbelievably hot book boyfriend, this is the book for you!
Memphis has just recently been released from jail for doing time for a doing something to save his family. Now that he’s out, he’s determined to find his younger brother and get out of town and start a new life. Too bad he hadn’t planned on his sexy neighbor who is too nosy for her own good.
Lyric hasn’t had the best childhood. Her mom left when she was young, and her dad isn’t a nice guy. She’s grown up looking after herself and is OK with that. She craves something different in her life, even her photography has suffered from no inspiration, that is until she and her roommate Bailey see some sexy as sin man arrive at a house next door that has been vacant for years. For some reason she can’t seem to look away and has this urge to get to know him.
Slowly Lyric gets Memphis to open up to her, but she still wants more from him. Memphis feels he’s to tainted to be with anyone, he can give Lyric sex, but he can’t give her anything else. But the sex between these two, holy crap is it hot!
When Memphis’ little brother gets in a bind, both of their pasts come crashing together. Will they be able to survive the aftermath of what happens and ending up having some happiness after all the pain? Or will the past ripped them apart and leave nothing behind?
I would definitely say this is one of my favorite books of 2015 so far! I love how well written this story was and you can almost feel the pain and anger that Memphis carried around with him. If you’re looking for a book that will have you fanning your face from all the steaminess with some little twists, this is the book for you. I promise you, once you pick up this book, you won’t be able to put it down!
Victoria Ashley is my secret crack. I can't stress that enough. Sometimes the quality is WTF...but sometimes she knocks it out of the park for me.
The h pursues the H in this novel. There's no other way to describe it and that is part of why I liked it...she's was a little scary OTT, but it was a nice change. And although he ran, he let her know every step of the way he was into her. And he was all alpha when she caught him.
This was a little dark. Child abuse, murder, prison, a little mob, and a little illegal fighting. Throw in some friends and ex-lover drama with a photographer h and an exhibitionist H...and...yeah, that shit was intense between them.
STEAMY HOT.
This is one of those books I don't want to give away too much plot. It was predictable at points and not at others, so it's definitely worth the surprise of going in blind. It was also plot/character driven and did not just revolve around their relationship.
Safety-gang: There's a quick OW BJ scene right at the beginning that I think it's there to show his detachment from women and relationships so he has a place to grow from with the h. They haven't even met and he just got out of jail - no judging. Don't let the OW put you off. It's in the prologue, just read the first half and skip the second half of it if you prefer...cuz after that...the steam factor. Off. The. Charts. And H/h centered.
SIDE: WTF is it with all the Y vowel names in this novel?!?!?
2.5* I was really underwhelmed with this book, unfortunately. I really loved Slade and enjoyed Hemy, but Get off on the Pain just didn't live up to my expectations.
Memphis is supposed to be this badass, but we're told it, repeatedly, instead of being shown it. I just didn't connect with the characters or the story, sadly.
I didn't feel like Memphis and Lyric really had a connection. Memphis was constanly pushing Lyric away, telling her she needed to stay far from him, that he wasn't worth it. I really wanted to SEE why he wasn't worth, not just have him tell us why. Lyric was frustrating as well- she's a tough little chick but took too much crap from Memphis. And the sex, not really hot to me.
It took too long to get to the meat of the story, and by that time I had figured out the little twist. I didn't find this book to be raw or gritty, or dark. Just overall disappointed.
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book had my full attention from the start. This was my first book of Victoria and let me tell you it was not a disappointment!
Memphis is the tough, don’t fuck with me type of guy we all want (really you do want him). Fresh out of prison on a mission just get out of his home town. He’s been through so much and just wants to find his brother Alex and move on with their life. That’s until he meets the very hot Lyric.
Memphis doesn't want to get involved with anyone let alone the hottie next door. Their chemistry is hot, yet neither want to give. Lyric is not your common girl next door. Her curiosity with Memphis gets the best of her and Memphis leaves her wanting more. As much as he fights his demons he can’t help but want her as bad as she wants him.
This books is a must read!! I can’t wait to read Alex’s story!
I can’t thank Victoria enough for giving us Memphis. He is one of my favorite book boyfriends.
All in all 5+ start review for me!
This author's books are my guilty pleasure 😂.
Slowly but surely, I'm reading all her books and loving them all.
As usual, the MMC is tormented and has some emotional trauma. He needs to work through his feelings and accepting of his past in order to decide to let the past go and live his life happy with the FMC.
I had the feeling the last chapters were rushed. Everything with her father solved too easily.
I wanted another epilogue with them in a few years, maybe 🥹. Hope they will appear in his brother's book 🙏❤️.
Honestly this book didn't do much for me. I've read enough erotica/romance novels that I'm getting so sick of the same stories. Damaged male meets just as damaged female, they have problems but somehow they continue to live happily ever after. In some books (like this one) there is kinky sex involved and in some there is just steamy sex scenes. I would love to read an author that has an original idea for a book. Again, I realize that there are a ton of novels out there, but to read the same story with different names over and over...I felt myself wanting to skip through many pages.
I've read plenty of other erotica novels that have WAY more of a story line and better sex scenes. I would not recommend this to anyone.
WOW. Memphis is everything I look for in a book boyfriend. Tall, dark, handsome, tattooed, mysterious, and dangerous :) This was my first Victoria Ashley book. I can honestly say I enjoyed it. Get off on the pain was a fun, light, sexy, fast paced- quick read. Lyric was perfect for Mempthis! If you are in the mood for something light and smutty, you should check this one out! :)
Loved it!
Victoria Ashley always manages to execute hot and heavy mixed with emotion so well.
Memphis is the best kind of bad boy; broody, moody, and sullen, but his heart is so big and so pure. I loved peeling back his layers and getting to know the real Memphis. Lyric is exactly the type of girl I love, too. Strong and fierce, but stubborn. She speaks her mind and knows who she is. She knew she could reach Memphis and knew their connection was special and never gave up on it or them.
I’m excited to see where Alex takes me too because dang, that boy is trouble.
Not gonna lie, I basically read this one because I stumbled upon the sequel that sounded interesting but you kind of have to start in the beginning. It was pretty much exactly what I was expecting. High on the dramas and the passions with just enough heart to rope you in the end. Not really any surprises here. I'm hopeful/curious if the next one will add a little something more to the mix.
Most of this book is just ok, but then it picks up steam & we have some pleasant surprises. I got a little sick of tough guy Memphis constantly pushing Lyric away... and then Lyric chasing him & not giving up on him. Lyric is a very cool chick, does a little piercing at a tattoo shop even though she has more artistic talent & can really draw, & she has a photography hobby that she is pretty serious about. I would love to get my hands on some of the naughty pictures these two take together - hot!!
