I’m Sam, I’m 33 and I live in Wokingham! I have a degree in illustration and I spend most of my time drawing Otters whilst generally making a mess and thinking about why I still haven’t bought a kitten. I like putting inappropriate sweets in the freezer (Jelly tots) and my favourite film is Homeward bound. I wish I looked cool wearing headbands but I don’t. Oh and I’m rubbish at looking after house plants.
First sentence: Today is Teddy's birthday. We are baking a cake. Shh! Don't tell Teddy. What kind of cake would Teddy like?
Premise/plot: Otter wants to celebrate--really CELEBRATE--Teddy's birthday right. And that, of course, means CAKE. Can Otter (and friends) make Teddy a cake??? Will their party be a success???
My thoughts: I don't remember reading other Otter books in the past. But if this book is any indication, I've been missing out. The book is super playful and a bit ambiguous. There's Otter and Otter Keeper, but then there's Otter's friends too....they appear to be toys....just toys, only toys. But not to Otter. To Otter his friends are just as involved in making and baking (and eating) the cake as he is. It's a fun, playful, imaginative book. I liked it.
Otter is a darling little character, living with "Otter Keeper" and stuffed animal friends. In Otter: Best Cake Ever, Otter gets into a messy cake mess in this version, all the while reminding us "Shhh, don't tell Teddy" about his special surprise. The words are very simple, the story a little silly, and the illustrations fascinating and engaging. Sam Garton gives us a fun little intro to the steps and process of baking for children.
Cute and fun, but a fairly average easy reader for me.
Checked out at library and reviewed in consideration for Cybils Award Easy Reader shortlist for 2021.
It is Teddy's birthday and Otter makes a cake for Teddy. It has to be a surprise. Otter works very hard and makes a yummy cake. It is so yummy that it all disappears. It is odd that the stuff animals pretend to be alive, but I like the story. (review by Ruby, 4th grade)
Is there an Otter book that does not deserve 5 stars? Once again this impish otter is back, with best friends and Otter Keeper. This time to make a cake and, of course, shenanigans ensue.
