Elliot Felding has too much on her plate. Three kids, a found family, a busy job, and more anger than she has room for. She doesn't need her ex, Wystan Austen, back in her life making everything worse.
Old anger sparks between them and erupts in a hot, unexpected encounter. Reeling from the chemistry still between them, they make a pact to let it play out.
It’s only sex, right?

Hold onto her anger, or let it go.

I’m not sure how to review this book. I think the most accurate thing I can say is that all the elements of an interesting book were there but the book didn’t stick the landing. It’s not horrid because I did finish it but it’s not great. Ultimately the plot points were interesting but came out of nowhere with weak connections. Many of the interactions that create growth in relationships are stilted and made them feel unrealistic. (Trying not to put spoilers here). The book has trigger warnings in the description but the warnings didn’t seem to have any teeth because those things that could have given the book depth were glossed over. It unfortunately left me feeling like I had read a book that romance novel detractors would say exemplifies the genre: sex with a thin plot.
I haven’t read any of the other books in the series. Maybe this was the problem? I believe I got this one as a freebie or discount. Overall, it read like a first draft. It could be a good book. It needs to not pull emotional punches and a good editor.
I was lucky enough to have been a beta reader for this book, so when I was finally able to settle down with it in its finished form, it felt like going home.
A smutty, romantic, chaotic home, but a home nevertheless.
Chasing Elliot tells the story of Elliot Felding, a mother of three who always finds a way to make life work despite the challenges of motherhood and a busy job. Of course, doing so means she doesn't have a lot of time to worry about herself, and it's starting to wear on her. She is caring and patient with her kids, kind and considerate to her found family co-parents, and boiling on the inside with a supply of anger she just can't find a way to let go of.
So, as you can imagine, Wystan Austen, her ex, was just what she needed to balance out the chaos of her emotions. And while I write that in jest (and with much sarcasm), it turns out that it isn't far from the truth. Not that Elliot "needed" someone to "fix" her. Far from it. Simpson isn't one to indulge in such stereotyping, but the reappearance of Wystan forces things into perspective for Elliot, and the perspective helps her adapt.
Honestly, for me, the best part of this entire story (aside from the delightfully aggressive smut) is the found family. The familial unit that is made up of Gun & Ali, who are a loving gay couple, co-parents to the kids, and best friends to Elliot; Jay, Elliot's trans son and eldest of the three; Florence, middle preteen daughter, with all that that entails; Bryony, youngest daughter who is also partly deaf, has sensory issues, and is an absolutely joy; and Elliot, who is actually the children's mother by adoption, but she makes it clear that she is one hell of a mother bear. Simpson treats every single member of this family with a detailed brush. They are all individuals. No stereotypes here. They're flawed and observant, selfish and self-less, they're people, in all of their glorious, beautiful chaos.
I know I often say that whatever Simpson book I'm reading is my favorite. She is just so good. She's so good at romance, so good at capturing the intricacies of people that make romance compelling and heart-felt. Chasing Elliot is no exception. It has a place at the top of my favorites.
This was one of my favorite romance reads this entire year. Stefanie Simpson has written another amazing, angsty and steamy romance that had me hooked from the first page. This is a killer second-chance romance between Elliot, a hardworking woman who's caring for her sister's kids after she's abandoned them, and Wystan, Elliot's uptight and sexy former love. They had a terrible breakup years ago and are thrust together once more. When they meet again, it doesn't go well to say the least. But! There's so much history and emotion between them still and they can't deny their attraction. So between arguing constantly, the end up hate-f*cking. A lot. And OMFG it is glorious!! Seriously, the attraction and tension between these two is off the chart--it jumps right off the page when you read their banter and love scenes.
But more than that, this is a heartfelt and relatable story about second chances, learning how to forgive the people who have hurt you, and learning to love again. This is one of my favorite second chance romances because it shows how two people can make things right even after hurting each other. The HEA is so beautiful and satisfying. It's the perfect read for anyone who loves second chance romances or romance in general!
