I don't know if it's from being book 6 in a series I know nothing about, but I couldn't really get into it. I mean, I can figure out SORT OF what's going on enough to understand what happens by the second comic, but clearly there are some things that have gone over my head.
What doesn't help is the odd panel flow in places, making it confusing what is the intended order for reading the panels. Also, the print quality is a bit slapdash; the title page is VERY low-resolution compared to the rest of the book.
The story feels rather stock, too: Magical girls have to secretly protect the world, but also another world with a strong "high fantasy" theme (magic, royalty, demi-humans/"monster"-people). Same girls have to deal with a completely normal problem before running off to the other world, usually something to do with bullies. Kind of forgettable, but also expected from a franchise overseen by Disney.
Honestly, I don't know if reading book 1 first would help. I haven't seen it to tell. Certainly it would be a better starting point, though!
THIS SERIES ARE AWSOME I MEAN THE GRAPHICAL I JUST LOVE THEM MY FRIEND IS LOVER OG WITCH AND ME TOO I WILL READ THIS BOOK TILL MY OLD AGE BECAUSE ITS AWSOME
