Während der Corona-Pandemie war immer wieder das Robert-Koch-Institut in den Nachrichten. Und wer über den Klimawandel etwas in Erfahrung bringt, stolpert zwangsläufig über das Alfred-Wegener-Institut, zu dem auch das bekannte Forschungsschiff Polarstern gehört. Und im Weltall fliegt ein Hubble-Teleskop, das bahnbrechende Aufnahmen aus den Tiefen des Alls zur Erde gesendet hat. Wer waren diese Menschen und warum tauchen sie in dem Buch „Geniale Köpfe der Naturwissenschaften auf?
Insgesamt 50 Wissenschaftler werden in diesem Buch vorgestellt und ein jeder hat sich irgendwie verdient gemacht. Mit dabei sind viele Wissenschaftler, die wir allein dadurch kennen, dass nach ihnen irgendwas benannt wurde oder deren Geschichte beeindruckend verfilmt wurde (wie z.B. bei „Gorillas im Nebel“, in dem das Leben von Dian Fossey verfilmt wurde).
Damit der junge Leser nicht die Übersicht verliert, ist das Buch in die wissenschaftliche Themengebiete Biologie, Chemie, Physik und Astronomie gegliedert (im Buch nennen sich die Kapitel „Bedeutende Biologie“, „Großartige Chemie“, „Fantastische Physik“ und „Erde und Sterne“. Zwischen drinnen gibt es einige erklärende Seiten (die im Inhaltsverzeichnis grau markiert sind), die je nach Thema grundlegende Dinge erklären und zeigen, wie sich im Laufe der Zeit durch die Wissenschaft Dinge verändern.
Bei der Vorstellung der Wissenschaftler stehen deren Errungenschaften und nicht deren Biografien im Vordergrund. So erfährt der Leser z.B. weder, warum Stephen Hawking im Rollstuhl saß noch dass Dian Fossey in Ruanda erschossen wurde. Dafür erfährt er etwas über die Hawking-Strahlung und die Beziehung zwischen Fossey und Berggorillas. Die Texte sind kurz und knapp gehalten und geben für Kinder verständlich wieder, was die vorgestellte Person geleistet hat. Gestaltet werden die Seiten je nach Person mit zahlreichen Zeichnungen oder Fotografien, falls diese vorhanden sind.
Neben den vielen bekannten Wissenschaftler gibt es in dem Buch auch einige, von denen sicherlich hierzulande noch niemand etwas geöhrt hat. Deshalb lohnt sich das Buch meines Erachtens auch dafür, um einfach nur zu stöbern und neue herausragende Köpfe in der Menschheitsgeschichte kennenzulernen.
Fazit
Das Buch eignet sich sowohl dafür, um nur mal eben nachzusehen, weshalb ein bekannter Wissenschaftler einen solchen Bekanntheitsgrad hat als auch um einfach nur mal zu stöbern. Die Darstellung und Einsortierung der jeweiligen Personen ist gut gelungen und auch die Zusammenstellung passt in meinen Augen. Für Kinder mit Sicherheit ein sehr erhellendes Buch.
Hinweis: Dieses Review betrifft die deutsche Version des Buchs. Seit Goodreads das Hinzufügen von neuen Editionen gesperrt hat, kommt das Team einfach nicht hinterher - wenig überraschend. Grundsätzlich ist es ja egal, welche Edition man bewertet

Joining the burgeoning shelf of science history books for the young comes this very suitable volume. Practically every story gets an equal two page spread, whether you are the ancient German woman who first worked out what caterpillars were about (becoming butterflies, of course) or the lady who worked out how we could tell what the sun was made of. The succinctness helps, in my mind, for there's none of the modern dressing more 'woke' volumes burden themselves with. That said, Mary Anning really did have to fight against misogyny, so perhaps aspects of the tales like that should be featured more than they are. The jury is out, but what is patently clear is that this has many qualities needed to convey its science history very well indeed, and by including many characters from around the world I'd never heard of, was able to teach me much. A strong four stars.

Additionally, the entire book is made up of warm watercolor illustrations, without any images, and is designed to help children feel closer to science.
Usually, science books can be difficult for even adults to get through, but this book could be excellent general education because of its concise text about a wide range of scientists.
The profiles of scientists and how their activities have influenced our lives and contributed to scientific progress are explained in an easy-to-understand story format.
Additionally, the entire book is made up of warm watercolor illustrations, without any images, and is designed to help children feel closer to science.
