Rate this book
From USA Today Bestseller L.A. Detwiler comes a disturbing paranormal horror story that will bring hell to the holidays and chilling fear to the festivities.

Some Christmas ornaments should be left in the attic.

When Candace Mills, 26, heads home for the holidays to visit her mother and ailing grandmother, she's expecting a peaceful, dull Christmas. She has no idea, though, that a single Christmas ornament is about to send her into a whirling chasm of evil.

It starts with the Christmas bell, scratched and worn in one of Grandma Anne's boxes in the attic. Once they put it on the tree, Grandma Anne starts to say terrifying things and act strangely. Candace and her mother assume it's her dementia talking--until they start to have dangerous encounters with a fiendish being.

As the secrets of Anne's past involving her twin sister rise to the surface, the women face sinister horrors from a dark force looking for revenge.

Will any of them be able to survive, or will they fall prey to the malevolent secret Grandma Anne is harboring from her past?

This was a spook chill short story!

A little backstory without giving away spoilers!

Candace Mills wants to spend Christmas with her mother and grandmother so she goes home for the holidays. Candace decides to help out with putting up the tree and the decorations, but when she starts to pull out everything from the attic she sees a small box that is hidden almost out of sight. When she opens the box, she sees that it holds a unique Christmas ornament which is a Christmas bell, so on a whim she hangs it on the tree.

Once Candace puts the ornament on the tree the house becomes haunted with evil activity and when her grandmother sees the bell, she just starts muttering crazy talk. Candace along with her mother and grandmother now have to endure an evil entity that stalks them in their home!

What is the entity? Why is it attached to a Christmas ornament? Does the family survive the entity? No spoilers here as you will just have to read the book!

Thoughts:

This was a new author to me and the story just has quite a bit of spooky atmosphere weaved through the whole story that some parts where downright chilling! The last half of the book picked up speed with more things happening and I was literally riveted into place as I did not want to move out of my chair as I wanted to see what would happen next! Giving this book four spooky "chiller" stars!

A good read for Christmas!

I enjoyed this short Christmas horror story. It really makes you think about bad seed vs. Environment. Who really is the monster here? If you take time to read between the lines, there is so much darkness here. No spoilers but would the story have turned out different if Rachel's home life was the opposite? I would definitely read more by this author.

A family with a dark secret. The truth will be revealed this Christmas.

Candace Mills wants to spend Christmas with her mother and grandmother so she goes home for the holidays.

They want to decorate the Christmas tree and as she is looking for the ornaments in the basement, she finds a mysterious box with a very strange ornament inside. It is a rusty old bell with something written on it.

When she touches it, all she sees is evil. They have opened Pandora's box and evil is out to get them all. Will they be able to stop it on time?

Told through the perspective of all women in the present as well as the grandmother back in 1955 this was an interesting story about a family secret that was buried but the truth is going to come out and with it, death.

I found this book to be enthralling. I was pulled into this dark little story. How something as simple as a little Christmas bell could put into motion so much terror and horror for one family is astounding. I think I would enjoy more by this author.

The Christmas Bell

This was… interesting. Okay. Not really scary. Not truly psychotic. But I could not stop reading it. I guess I was hoping for… more. I’m a little irked by the characters, but to each their own. The ending was slightly predictable. The main storyline dragged a little while there were parts I would have liked to read more about. It was balanced enough to keep my attention, but lacking enough that I feel slightly duped.

This was first time read for me with this author. And it was not a good experience. I feel like it could have been so much more. I have always been interested in the paranormal and this story was really far fetched. The plot was super unrealistic, and I could not stand any of the characters I mean what twin sister world treat her counter part like that. Ugh just a poor attempt at a horror where the author just tried too hard to make it scary.

I tried to find some redeeming quality in this story and I actually did, the cat. I liked the cat, and even the cat died!

The Christmas Bell by L.A. Detwiler is a horror story set around the Redwood Asylum, but definitely a stand-alone novella.

My Synopsis:    (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Candace dolefully returns home for Christmas.   Her head is still full of the abusive father from her childhood, even though he is long gone.   But this visit will be better, as her beloved Grandmother Anne, who is growing older, has moved in with her mom.

While her mom and grandmother are out, Candace decides to get the tree and ornaments from the attic.  She comes across an old, rusty red bell with the figure of a hooded girl marked on the side of it.  Candace feels dread just looking at it, but it goes on the tree.

As her family and friends gather, things start going wrong, and not only Candace is seeing things.  There is a girl with dark hair, and rusty scissors.... Her grandmother is terrified.  She fears her twin sister Rachel has returned for her vengeance.  No one even knew Anne had a sister, much less a twin.

My Opinions:
I'm always pleased with this author's imagination, and I love the stories which center around Redwood Asylum.  This is another one, but it can be read as a stand-alone.

For a rather short novella, this really packed a punch.  Yes, there was gore, and suspense, and some tender moments too.  Then there was the evil twin!

The story is told through different perspectives, as well as Anne's story from many years ago. The book really centered on family dynamics, and that was really interesting.  It looked at how far a mother would go to protect her child, and another mother who was a nightmare!  It turned out that not all of the characters were saints.

This was a really creepy Christmas tale!  I loved it.

This was a quick read, more novella length than novel.

Candace has not been home to see her mother in quite some time, and will come to regret this visit. All seems well at first, what could be nicer than catching up with old friends and seeing Grandma Anne for the holidays? Grandma has recently had to move in with her daughter (Candace's mom Marian) since she can no longer care for herself and keep up with her own home. Many of her belongings are banished to Marian's attic since there just isn't room. When Candace discovers the strange looking Christmas bell in one of her boxes she thinks it would be a nice thing to do for Grandma to put it on the tree. Turns out it wasn't nice, for anyone! Grandma has some very disturbing secrets and the bell is the catalyst that uncovers them, putting the whole family and Candace's friends in danger. I found the mother /daughter dynamic to be fascinating. Generations of women, going all the way back to Anne's mother did some pretty disturbing things that they convinced themselves was for the good of the family.

I was reading a lot of Christmas themed work this year. And I was intrigued when I ran across this book because I had not really considered Christmas horror as a genre.

It had some very strong moments, and I really liked the central cursed object. But the family history was muddied, and I wasn’t satisfied by the ending. Those some ambiguity is fine with me, I guess I like my horror a little more conclusive at the end.

Candace Mills returns home to spend Christmas with her mother, & her grandmother who is starting to develop dementia & has moved into her daughter's home. Candace decides to decorate the house as a surprise & finds all her grandmother's old Christmas ornaments in the attic, including one which has been sealed in a box on its own with a warning.

On opening the box, it contains a small, scratched Christmas bell with the words on the back 'One Too Many'. Soon Candace, her mother, grandmother, & 2 old school friends who handle the ornament start to have strange & terrifying dreams & Candace will wish she had left the bell inside the box.

This was a fairly quick read at under 200 pages & had an interesting (if unlikely) storyline. It was OK but I wouldn't be a hurry to re-read it.

One too many

I enjoyed the beginning of this short book. It was full of potential. A young woman returns home for Christmas and finds a forgotten ornament in the attic that dredges up family secrets.
The abuse of the twin, Rachel, being constantly told she was one too many was horrific.
Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of the vengeful spirit trope. The ghost was too powerful. The characters were not wise in their actions. The last half of the book was full of over the top action scenes and long drawn out thoughts of the characters.
Such a shame as there was potential for this story to rise above routine psychotic ghost fare.

While the story was okay, the choppy writing and forced narrative often distracted from the plot. I felt like the sentences were often abrupt and didn't flow.

~~~
За първи път се сблъсквам с творчеството на Л. А. Детуайлър и със сигурност няма да е за последен! Ето това е добра книга на ужасите със страхотни стряскащи моменти и психологическо въздействие, което те кара да се страхуваш да останеш сам в тъмното. Или да си в близост до коледно звънче.
Още от първите страници се разбира книгата колко ще е добра, защото началото е много силно, дори и без да се случва нищо в него. За сметка на това навява ужасяващи чувства в читателя, карайки го да го побият тръпки, защото дори и без да е пряко казано, се усеща изключително мрачна и зловеща атмосфера. Това продължава и през цялата книга - злокобното усещане не ме пусна дори за миг и успяваше да ме плаши, дори когато не четях.
Стилът на писане много ми хареса - стегнат, не дотяга с разточителни детайли и въпреки това предава тягостната, мъчителна обстановка перфектно. Авторката определено знае как да създава напрежение, което бавно и полека се увеличава. Почти от самото начало напрежението не напусна нито мен, нито страниците, наслагвайки се все повече и повече. Към кулминацията вече е толкова много, че бях почти готова да се пръсна, а в комбинация и с бавно нарастващия ужас от случващото се, който ме обземаше, ме караше еднакво силно да оставя книгата и да не искам да спирам да чета.
Всички герои са много добре изградени и въпреки, че книгата е много кратка, успях да ги опозная достатъчно. За малкото време, което имах с тях, авторката успя да ме накара да симпатизирам на едни, да не харесвам други, да искам да разбера повече за трети.
Завръзката, кулминацията и това, което беше нещо между край и развръзка в историята са наистина страхотни. А отвореният край е точно толкова интересен и ужасяващ, че да имаш нужда от някой захаросан коледен филм след него.
This is a paranormal slasher, taking place at Christmas. It is what it purports to be. It is definitely not a feel-good Christmas story all tied up with a bow on top. Which is fine -- I like some dark mixed in with my can-of-corn, Christmas reads.
BUT, I feel there is too much left out and too many holes in the plot. I know this is a prequel to the main story, The Redwood Asylum, and I am planning to read that one at some time. I do hope we come back to the Mills family. If not, I will feel perpetually ripped off that I never get to see what happens to the real monsters of the story ---> Rachel and Anne's mother, and, secondarily, their father <---- I MUST know what fate had in store for them. Because, I see Rachel's need for revenge against Anne and everyone she holds dear -- but what about dear old mom?? I hope Rachel also paid her a visit in the not-so-distant past. And also, Anne hints at the evil-ness of Rachel but L.A. Detwiler paints her as abused by her mother?? There are huge, gaping holes where there are many questions I need answers for.
Well, it wasn't boring.
It wasn't really a long book, more a novelette than a novel, so it got right to the point and did not let up...ever. There was only one character I cared about by the end of the story and unfortunately, I guessed that character's fate about halfway through the story. I did like the story. It kept moving and always had something going on. I read it in one sitting which is unusual for me. I'm not sure what happened with the epilogue. I thought I understood it then I read it again. I still felt I understood it, but what I understood was different from what I understood from the first reading. Both understandings were good though, so either way, I liked it. I would definitely read more by this author. Maybe a sequel. More Candace.
I was given a copy of author #LADetwiler book #TheChristmasBell to be released 11/10/2020. This book should be released before Halloween in my opinion! This story involves a young woman heading home to spend the holidays with her mother and grandmother. Little does she know this holiday will be one of horror and terror! It starts with finding a Christmas Bell in her moms attic. The bell should have been left in the attic! Who if anyone will survive this nightmare. I give this 4.5 stars. L.A. Detwiler knows how to bring chills to her readers.
Christmas Bell is a thriller from beginning to end who would of thought that a Christmas Bell something that we see as cheerful and signify happiness would turn this Christmas so creepy. This book will have you at the edge of your seat all throughout. I can’t imagine living in a house with an attic full of trinkets that could bring turmoil in time of love and family and happiness and lots of Christmas bells. I loved it. Thank you For my Review Copy. I hope there’s a sequel this story calls for it
"Something needs to change. One too many. She's out of control."
There's just something about Christmas and horror that makes for a fun little mashup!
When I saw author L.A. Detwiler's Instagram post that she wrote a Christmas horror story, I jumped on it!
The Christmas Bell is a great book - a home for the holidays theme with a haunted ornament awakened for three generations of women, an evil twin, creepy family secrets and revenge.
It's a quick and addictive read; a nice change of pace for holiday reading if something darker is your style. Recommended!
Merry Creepy Christmas
Maybe you shouldn’t bring creepy ornaments down from the attic! This is a Christmasy short horror. I love how everything ties in with the redwood asylum. This was fun to read in December. I think this is the first time I’ve felt so bad for a ghost. Poor Rachel, I just want to hug her.
