There are few things in life that can’t be made better by some good old- fashioned Hex.
Torie Bliss had accepted the gifts that were bestowed on witches of her lineage. Gifts that manifested themselves after her fortieth birthday. Gifts that had come in handy when trying to solve the case of a supernatural serial killer.
Now, all she wanted was to relax, enjoy the company of her quirky new friends, practice her magic, and settle down in the scenic, mountain-side town of Singing Falls. And maybe get to know a certain werewolf that seems to have developed a thing for her.
At least that was the plan, until a knock at her door forces her to deal with someone from her past. Someone that is opening Torie’s world up to a whole new level of danger and darkness. Darkness that threatens to devour her new world.
Can Torie and her friends survive a threat that has been stalking them from the shadows?
Would I read the author again? No. Why? Insta everything. Instant best friends, instant new fortune, instant comfort in her new town, instant powers when she needs them most, instantly moves on from her marriage, ... All the unpleasant parts of life are magically taken care of for the MC. SPOILERS BELOW
Her husband wants a divorce and has a new love-- oh he's done all this stuff too so he's irredeemable and going straight to prison when he’s caught. She never has to deal with her feelings for her ex-- turns out he's a felon and she's over him like that! Oh, the Fed's seized everything? Well, except for a convenient thousands of dollars and a safe reliable car! Good thing she doesn’t need anything more at that point. Mom's dead and she's heartbroken? NP Mom's a sentient ghost who comes when called. Oh, she can’t afford an expensive casket for her mother? Turns out she's an heiress! Oh, she needs to save someone from the killer? She's a magical prodigy!
This isn't a novel it's wish fulfillment.
I am 45 and recently separated. Grief, depression that's the reality. Being on a budget and having to deal with tough financial difficulties? Reality. Losing a parent forever? Reality. Learning a new skill? Doesn't happen overnight and there's lots of practice involved.
Hardships have to be experienced, they build character. Insta-everything isn’t satisfying as a reader. Quite the opposite. And, frankly, it’s lazy writing. No one is fully good or bad. There are good times in all relationships: otherwise why take the leap at the start. It takes time to get over 20 years of marriage. Yes, even if your ex is a felon.
But I did finish it (though I skimmed a lot of the end) and that's a 2 star review from me.
Hmnn..this is one of those stories that is almost good but isn’t because of frustrating scenes that don’t make sense. The main character who is now an independent witch and feels more secure about who she is as a woman allows her philandering and financially plundering ex and the woman he cheated on her with -who are also hunted by the FBI- to stay in her home? This not a show of kindness, it instead makes her complicit in a crime which shows her to be emotionally weak and co-dependent, the opposite of strong and independent. The plots and scenes are rushed (especially when the wolf gets zapped) and character conversations are sometimes confusing (I had to go back more than once to figure out who was saying what).
The sets fire to the fae but her clothes don’t even get singed? Wtf? If they had seen the fae surrounded by a bubble barrier maybe that would have helped. The scene where she becomes one with the wolf, sigh, omg so many problems. Why should she be able to become one with his mind if they are not mated yet? She’s brand new at magic, how can she even do it? None of this makes any sense. Where is her struggle to learn? And the ending scene should have had much more depth and clarity, where was the emotional tension about her willingness to give up her power before she does it? A reader has to engage, connect and FEEL what the characters thinks and experiences to suspend belief and that doesn’t happen; the story instead feels superficial. I think this writer is promising and has the potential to plan better and dig deeper into the stories.
Imho, Ward and the fae should have gone to her mother’s home after stopping at what they thought was Alva’s house. If the storyline had progressed from there it would have felt more realistic and challenging and not so contrived.
There is never a dull moment in this (and the previous) book. Plot twists and surprises galore. I absolutely love Torie and her friends. These books have been an emotional roller coaster ride. Tears of joy, pain and sorrow are to be expected. Where the next book leads, there’s no telling.
Nothings over till it's over.. With the hedge witch gone Torie and her friends are trying to get to grips with everything that happened. Then a knock at the door brings guests to her door one of which they were seeking neither she wanted to see...ever again!
A great belter of a book. Action throughout with a sweet romance in the background. Some lovely touching moments interspersed with a whole lot of running from one mystery to the next each bringing answers but also more questions. Worth reading, a good solid storyline with strong characters that show turning the other cheek makes you stronger and forgiveness is better for everyone.
Be prepared for some dodgy spells (of the magic variety not the wordy type) seriously the spells are atrocious I get it's all about intent but jings crivens and help me Bob, these are bad. Ends on a cliff hanger or two ready for book three. Bring it on
Even if the author likes to put a cliffhanger at the end of her books, I don't think I will read the next one.
Don't get me wrong the storyline has some nice twists, but the character development is practically non existend. I mean Elric is not really featured in book one, and when so he seems rather weak, and suddenl he is in a relationship with Torie. When did this happen? And Torie doesn't know anything about magic and suddenly she throws spells with the best of them. Again, when did this happen?
There is a lot of story going on, but I guess there is just no room for something a little bit more on 165 pages.
The magical shenanigans continue as Torie and friends try to figure out what's up with the fey who just hired them then turned up dead. To confuse matters, Torie's cheating hubby shows up with the home wr cling business partner, but things aren't as they seem. And there's a little magical surprised in tow. The gals pals and Torie are now magical PIs almost, as gold in town have started asking for help. Love how the story unfolds, and also that Torie has her verbal kick ass moment which was long overdue. This one also ends on a cliffhanger, with a new mystery in the making. Love that!
Favorite Line ~ "Magical tunnel vision was a bitch."
A lot going on in this book! I love it when something new is always happening, it makes me want to read until I get to the end. Now I want to talk about the story, but that is not fair to those who have not read it yet. So I will just say I loved the story and the three heroines, a squirrel shifter and two witches. I want to call them the three amigas. And I cannot wait for the next book.
As Torie is learning more about her witchy powers, her and her friends are actively trying to solve who is behind the murders of shifters. She also finds Elric is just what she needs after her husband defrauds people and takes off with his business partner. Then the most unexpected thing happens - both the husband and the hussy who ran away with her husband show up at her house. Their presence brings even more danger. Must read to find out what happens next.
Torie is learning her magic and is getting powerful. A shadowy figure continues to be a danger. An unwelcome blast from her past complicates things as they sort out who is the mastermind behind the serial killings. I like the action, humor, and romance. Torie is a strong yet sympathetic character. I look forward to the next book.
This book was a little less out of sorts as the last but, it is just strange and unbelievable. I'm not going to give any spoilers but, things are just overly correlated. Every character, plot twist and storyline is too predictable and too much for me. Sorry, I'm not a fan but, that doesn't mean that another person will not absolutely love it.
Now that the world building is complete, i had hopes for this one. It was better, but the author still changes pov in the middle of scenes, and the Mc’s motivations were unclear. Added to that a glaring medical/factual error towards the end, and … so much potential. But MJ needs an editor. Or a better one.
Book 2 was so much a better read. Both funny and sad. Still trying to figure if Elric is slow of mind of overly cautious. I'm rooting for option 2. I must admit I was worried Torie would take back Ward, but extremely happy he is turning himself in. Now I'm worried about the baby and what will happen next.
I have submitted this review after listening to the audio book of this title from within the series set box. (Audible Membership)
The strangest visitors that Torie had ever seen stood on her doorstep. She was flabbergasted! What follows is a tale that changes her newly acquired magical freedom forever.
And tories friendships grow even more than her burgeoning powers. When fate drops a bomb of her ex and mistress in her lap and living room what does that mean for silver falls?
Every author has their own take on the supernatural world. Blending witches, shifters, and Fae isn't unique, but this author puts her own spin on it, and the results are magical, pun intended.
Mystery solved with a sacrifice. Torie and her friends are powerful witches and shifters and share an incredible dynamic. I love Singing Falls and look forward to Torie getting back what she so unselfishly gave up!
Not a fun read. Too many characters you’ve learned to like die. Other than that, it’s well written. I won’t be reading the rest of the series however. I like to enjoy a plot without feeling too sad.
Tori’s sacrifice was heartbreaking but understandable. Though this is a 2 book series, another cliffhanger was left, I’d love for there to be an addition.
Totally a great read. The story sucks you in and you don't want to put it down. Wow and the ending leads you wanting more Now. Thanks M.J. Caan keep up the great work.
Another great book. An ex-husband, a pregnant fae, and a male witch, what an interesting bunch of characters that have been added to this story. Wonder what's coming up next.
