The Christmas Letters

This is an outdated version of The Christmas Letters that is no longer available. Please see the newly revised and updated version HERE.

Can an old letter spark a new flame?

Yes, Dahlia Ravenel did manage to trap herself in a bathroom stall. And yes, the paramedic that talked her out of a panic attack was insanely hot. If only he was interested.

Connor McKay has a mysterious Christmas pen pal, a woman who replied to a newly found letter he sent to Santa back when he was a kid. After weeks of correspondence, it's clear she's funny, charming, interesting...and an awful lot like Dahlia Ravanel--the woman he already blew off for good reason.

Dahlia and Connor couldn't be more different, but when their worlds collide, fate (and a mischievous grandma) set two people who have sworn each other off on a crash course for love.

"It's that time of year, where the world falls in love,
Every book you read seems to say
'Merry Christmas, may you curl up with me and stay up late reading.'"

Hee Hee! I took a little bit of liberty there to change up some words to fit reading a book. I couldn't help myself. Kudos to you if you catch my reference. ;-) As I was thinking about this book and what I was going to write about it this song kept popping into my head. I think curling up with it and staying up late to read it is a great description for how I enjoyed it! It's a pretty quick read but enjoyable.

I'm a huge fan of The Shop Around the Corner. If you don't know what that is, think You've Got Mail. The Shop Around the Corner was an old black and white film, which then was remade as You've Got Mail. Did you catch the reference in YGM to the original? I'll give you a hint...the place where Meg Ryan works. Another version is the musical, She Loves Me (one of my favs). If you're a fan of any of those then I think you'll enjoy this sweet, quirky and cute Christmas version.

This book is a branch off from Wedding Belles: A Novel in Four Parts and looks at the story of Dahlia who was a secondary character. I haven't read Wedding Belles and wasn't confused by anything happening in the story, so if you're wondering, yes, you can read this without reading the previous book. But, you might be like me and want to go back and read Wedding Belles because some of the couples were just darling in this novella.

Dahlia and Connor were fun characters. I really liked how their backstory was revealed and it fit nicely in with their budding friendship/pen pans/fighting attraction. It was pretty funny to see them skirting around each other, especially when fate had other plans for them.

I loved the letters! They were great and there were a couple that were the highlight of the book for me. *Happy Sigh*

If you're looking for a sweet, fun, humorous, swoony and clean Christmas book to curl up with and get lost within the pages, this is one I would recommend taking a chance on.

Content: Clean.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I picked this up on a total whim and discovered the most charming romance! I love holiday novellas, especially when they have a well-rounded story like this one.

Charleston socialite Dahlia is ready to face life on her own. Accepting a volunteer position with the Southern Society, she discovers a sixteen-year-old letter written to Santa. Deciding to reply, a pen pal exchange ensues with the mysterious recipient … both not realizing they’ve already met.

It’s a classic storyline that blended so well with the magic of Christmas. With misconceptions a major conflict in this romance, I adored the slow reveal as the two woman in Connor’s life become one.

Their connection was fast but somehow also incredibly romantic and believable. This was such a heartwarming story!

I’m always up for a cute Christmas book. This is Brenna Jacobs’ first Christmas romance. And it left me hoping for more!

I loved how Dahlia was. She’s the daughter of one of Charleston’s elite families. But she wasn’t happy with her life. She wanted something more. Dahlia wanted to be who she was, not just who her parents thought she was. They weren’t always kind about her choices. But she pressed forward. I loved how she wanted to make a difference, so she volunteered. And it was hilarious when she locked herself in the bathroom stall. But that’s how she met Connor.

Connor is a paramedic. And he’s the one who kept Dahlia calm while she was waiting for rescue from the bathroom stall. I loved how she felt an instant connection to him. But he wanted nothing to do with Charleston’s elite scene. And then he started getting letters from a secret pen pal. That was my favorite part of the book. He fell in love with the author of these letters. And life would never be the same.

Unfortunately, things are not always perfect. And they weren’t for Connor either. But it all turned out how it should have in the end.

I loved this one! Maybe I should read it again!

Loved this book! Fun incorporation of a well loved rom com movie.
Once I started, I didn’t want to stop reading. Great characters. Little bit of sassy and spunk. Good, honest (hard) conversations. Brings in characters from past books. (This book can be read as a stand alone, but it was nice to get glimpses into current lives of characters from other stories.) And I love that Dahlia got her own story to see how she has grown and changed.
I love this author and can’t wait to read more from her!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Another winner from Brenna Jacobs! I loved Dahlia’s reformed character and how Connor learned to look past his stereotypes and give her a chance thanks to their endearing exchange of Christmas letters! The perfect Christmas romance!! 🥰

I liked the concept of this one but it really needed to be a full length novel to do it justice. Unfortunately I really didn't enjoy this novella, it was super rushed, very insta love, went waaaaay too cheesy (and you know I love a good cheesy story), and the characters just had 0 chemistry, nor did I feel connected to or care for them at all.

If you're looking a sweet Christmas story this one will hit the spot. The main character, Dahlia Ravenel, is from Wedding Belles: A Novel in Four Parts, BUT you don't have to read that one to enjoy this one. You may want to read it afterward to see what Dahlia was like before, but anyway, back to The Christmas Letters.

Dahlia has finally found herself and who she wants to be after 18 months of yoga and meditation in Bali. When she volunteers to answer the Christmas letters to Santa for the Southern Society she finds an old letter, from 16 years ago, that was never answered. Even though Dahlia knows the writer, C.M. is her age now, she decides to answer it.

Connor McKay is an EMT who helped Dahlia when she was trapped in a bathroom stall. One of the weirdest and funniest meet-cutes. He doesn't know who the author of the letters is but starts to wonder if it's Dahlia.

This is another winner from Brenna Jacobs. I loved how Dahlia and Connor met, although it was probably embarrassing for Dahlia, and the letters shared between them were so sweet. Knowing how Connor felt about people who came from money I was surprised when his little secret was revealed. I loved his matchmaking grandma and her wise words to Connor about his parents' death and money. I loved how Dahlia showed she was more than the old money she came from--she wanted to be judged for herself--not for the family she was born into. This is a quick, sweet, satisfying read, and I loved seeing some of the characters from the Magnolia Bay books.

I received a complimentary copy but bought a copy for my personal library. All opinions in this review are my own.

“One thing was perfectly clear. She either needed to make out with the man or never see him again.”

I was so excited to get my hands on this book, and I ended up reading it in a day! I get Brenna’s newsletters, and when she talked about Dahlia being from another book, I realized she was from Wedding Belles: A Novel in Four Parts, and I was so excited to find out what happened to her after that book. (But you don’t have to read that to enjoy this one!) The Christmas Letters is such a cute story, (with a way cute cover!) with the best way the main characters meet! It has a You’ve Got Mail type of plot, but with actual letters. It was so fun! And it was fun to revisit Sweetgrass Island where her Gentlemen of Magnolia Bay series takes place. I’m so glad the authors of Wedding Belles and Brenna Jacobs collaborated got Dahlia’s story told!

Falling in love via anonymous hand written letters in a charming small town? I’ll take it!

I gave this one two stars, but this is NOT a bad book. At all. I think it just wasn’t quiiiite up to scratch. But so easy to read to get in the festive spirit!

This book had all the cute ideas and possibilities for a stellar story, however I felt as though it was a little bit average. I read it, I liked it, I liked the characters, it was good. But that’s it. It was just good.

The storyline for this book had really good potential, and I think it would make a ridiculously cute movie, but I did feel as though some bits were perhaps a bit shallow/rushed.

Anyways if you’re after a quick and very predictable read, give it a go. I hadn’t read anything by this author previously, but I’d still like to check out some of her other books.

This was another novella based on "You've Got Mail"/"Shop Around the Corner" with pen pals that know each other IRL but don't know they are writing to each other and falling in love. It's a cute trope that, when done right, I enjoy (I love both those movies. And "You've Got Mail" was referenced a couple times in the story).

I do think this could have benefited from more pages. It felt rushed. The love was insta-love and even with the letters, they were all shared in full so the reader can read what the characters were reading, and there was barely enough covered in those letters to even think you might be starting to have feelings for someone (IMO). Also there were a LOT of emotions that Connor, the male lead, had to work through before he was willing to commit to Dahlia, and with the short story format, his working through those feelings felt rushed and sort of going through the motions.

A couple of other things that could have been better in my mind:
- it felt like some of the things that Connor was worried about in terms of a relationship with Dahlia were things that would have made more sense about 20 or so years ago. I don't know...maybe that's because it was set in the South and that's still how things are there. 🤷‍♀️
- I don't like it when people make their own decisions based on them making a decision for someone else. Speak your mind, have the conversation(s) and let the other adult make their decision for themself.
- Connor ghosted her time and again and I honestly think she gave him way more chances and stuck it out longer than most people would.

What I did like about it:
- Dahlia was so open in her side of the communication. She was forthright and she stood her ground and knew her worth and although she did give him a lot of chances, she knew he was wroth it and made the decision to be strong and fight for what she wanted. That was refreshing.
- There was a least one good swoony kiss that was written well...even though I'd prefer to bump up the PG rating to at least PG-13. 😉
- I did like the overall premise. I also liked the side characters, especially Connor's grandma who called him out on all his shit. 👍

3.5 stars

Dahlia is back in her hometown of Charleston, ready to do some volunteering & face life on her own terms. Not only she meets a hot & charming fire fighter- paramedic after being stuck in the bathroom stall but also discovers a 16-year-old unanswered letter written to Santa.
Suddenly her life is not the same with the presence of a pen-pal & a crush who wouldn't ask her out.

This was a super charming novella. Dahlia & Connor were incredible together & balanced each other out. They were two genuine people who loved with their whole heart.
I loved the 'You've Got Mail' vibes this gave with a nice touch of holiday spice.

I really liked the exchange of letter and how they initially met.

I didn't like they way he dismissed the heroine and how judgmental he was. It would have been a much better story if was as brave and forthcoming as the heroine.

“When we broke up, I told Peyton that I thought we both deserved to feel the world tilt on its axis when we fell in love.”

“You should call me.”
He couldn’t help but return her smile. “Yeah? Why is that?”
She nodded, her face suddenly turning more serious than flirty. “Cause my world just tilted.”

“I know. But still. I just feel like my happily-ever-after needs to be in my own hands.”

“I’d rather be optimistic and take a risk than miss out on something amazing because I was too scared it might not work out.”

Though if I end up liking an audiobook, I might have to buy the book just to have it on my shelf. My grandma says this is weird. That I’ll check a book out from the library and then, if I like it, buy it for my own library. I just know that eventually I’ll read it again and then I’ll be happy to have it on my shelf. I don’t do it with ALL books, just the ones I love.

“Reading and watching movies, huh? I’m impressed with your multitasking.”
“I read during the commercials,” she said.

“Is she really beautiful? Dahlia?” Grandma June asked, a soft smile on her lips.
An image of Dahlia flashed through Connor’s mind. “Yeah. Maybe the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”

One thing was perfectly clear. She either needed to make out with the man or never see him again. There was definitely no middle ground. To be around him and not be with him was the worst kind of torture.

What happens when Dahlia isn’t happy with her life and wants something more. She leaves her life behind, goes on her honeymoon without the husband for 18 months and finds herself there. She comes back to her old life but as a new person. It’s harder than she thought. Then you have Connor, a paramedic. Who is pretty much happy with his life but wants a real relationship. He has a past with elite Charleston families and he doesn’t want to go back to that lifestyle. Dahlia gets locked in a public bathroom and starts to freak out. That’s when Connor and Dahlia met. There was an instant connection. But once Connor figured out who Dahlia was (an elite Charleston’s family), he put the brakes on everything. Then Dahlia finds an old Christmas letter that was never delivered to Santa. Dahlia writes back and that’s how a secret pen pal begins. But what happens when the two secret pen pals realize who they are writing to.

This novella has a great message about overcoming assumptions about people, and believing in yourself. I loved how Connor and Dahlia balanced each other. They were two people who wanted love. It was a sweet and heartwarming holiday romance. 3.5 stars.

Connor came from a rich society background and chose to turn his back on it and become a paramedic. Consequently, when Dahlia, with whom he formed a bond while rescuing her, turns out to come from such a background herself, he refuses to have any more to do with her. Dahlia is upset but throws herself into other things - like the job she's volunteered for of responding to letters to Santa. When she finds a letter that's remained unnoticed in the box for many years, she decides to answer it, being encouraged thereto by an older friend who knows them both and thinks they'd make a good match. The anonymous correspondence begins, and she finds herself drawn to the unknown writer - but at the same time she seems to keep on running into Conner, and their attraction is undeniable. When she at last meets her pen pal, will it be the start of a relationship or the end?

An enjoyable clean read, with characters that I enjoyed getting to know, an interesting setting and a nice touch of humour. The story is generally pretty light-hearted, but still with some serious bits at times. Both Connor and Dahlia have appeared in previous books - I'd come across Connor but not Dahlia, but the background is not needed to enjoy this story. A Christmassy sort of book, but one that could be read at any time of year. Recommended: 4.5 stars.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

(4.5 stars) - The ultimate awkward meet-cute? 🤣

This is a fun story with Dahlia (also Lily & Deacon) from "Wedding Belles" and Connor (along with Peyton & Will) from "The Royal's Best Friend" experiencing a splash of "You've Got Mail"/"Shop Around the Corner", but it doesn't hew too closely to the originals & successfully manages to be its own story in this pleasurable variation.

Dalia is back from her extended time out trip to Bali. She's confused because she knows the kind of person she doesn't want to be anymore, but hasn't fully figured out who she is & does want to be.

Connor is interested in Dahlia, but in addition to his own natural reserve, he has a tragic backstory that has him stuck in his childhood prejudices. It's a little bit frustrating at times, because he's never admitted them to anyone since he was a kid, so they're not really rational - but they don't really have to be because they've never been challenged let alone thought through.

There was also a lot I could relate to in Connor, which may be why I found him frustrating a few times, lol, but he's actually a good guy. And his grandma is delightful!

I love that Dahlia isn't afraid to go after what she wants - but in a way that's been tempered by her growing self awareness & learning to consider others.

Both Dahlia & Connor find themselves developing a new level of awareness of how they've been projecting on others - including each other - and the journey is sometimes funny, sometimes painful, but always sweet.

*Romance level: passionate kisses, nothing graphic

This is a Five Star, charming Christmas romance, perfect for the holidays. I loved "The Christmas Letters" by Brenna Jacobs and will definitely be reading more of her books.

Both characters embark on an important journey of self discovery that leads them to that Hallmark-esque happily ever after, but even better. Dahlia is such a fun character, truly taking the challenge to become a better person to heart and doing everything she can to do so. Conner is ready for love, he just has to adjust his perspective on the right woman. Together, they are perfect. I love, love, loved these characters.

Then there is the writing, Brenna Jacobs did such a wonderful job with this book, definitely some swoon worthy pages in this book (and CLEAN). "My world just tilted." "It was the kind of kiss that tilted the world on its axis" Those are just a couple of my favorite lines. Plus, "I'm so relieved...you don't know how desperately I wanted it to be you." Yes that is referencing one of the greatest rom coms out there, and there are many more references throughout the book that made be fall in love with the story even more.

Such a fun book, quick read, and perfect distraction for your holiday season (or any time of year where you just want a fun romance). I loved it and can't wait to start another one of Brenna Jacobs books.

This incredibly sweet and heartwarming holiday romance needs to be made into a Hallmark Christmas movie yesterday!

I came across Christmas Letters by Brenna Jacobs by chance and immediately added it to my TBR list. Feeling a bit down this morning, I decided I needed a pick me up, so I chose to read this book. I couldn’t have chosen a better book to help me out of my slump.

This incredibly sweet and heartwarming holiday romance needs to be made into a Hallmark Christmas movie as ASAP as possible. It is everything a feel good romance should be and more. I felt an immediate connection to Dahlia and could relate to her and her quest to be a better version of herself. And then there was Connor....a sexy, down to earth paramedic who will win you over with his quiet sexiness and kind heart.

Dahlia and Connor’s meet cute is perhaps one of my favorite to date and was what had me hooked. I loved watching them fall in love - in an unconventional way (no spoilers, but letters are only part of it). I couldn’t read this book fast enough and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Christmas Letters is a sweet holiday romance read and gets the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval. TBR and Enjoy!

Such an adorable story! This was a quick, read it all in one sitting kind of book for me. A Christmas and southern twist on "You've Got Mail" only with actual letters, this was honestly a delightful read that captured my attention and had me fully invested the entire time. Connor is seriously swoony and I was so excited for him to have his own story as he is a side character in The Royal's Best Friend (though you don't have to have read it to read this book). Dahlia was also a fantastic character and I loved the attraction between her and Connor even when Connor was stubborn and they were both fighting it. This book had the right mix of heart, humor, and romance. A fabulous read, one of my favorites by Brenna Jacobs thus far.
The content is clean and wholesome while still delivering all the feels.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All opinions and thoughts are my own. I loved this so much I wish it was available in paperback.

the beginning was kinda promising but i became exhausted with connor and his assumptions about dhalia. he was just such a weird and annoying person and while i loved dhalia, her being fierce and just overall a great heroine, she def deserved better than him. especially since he didn't grovel like at all. he basically ignored her for long periods of time throughout the book without any explaination to dhalia, said some fucking shitty and presumptious stuff to her and then decided that he is in love with her all of a sudden? yeah, no. i was just so annoyed near the end but decided to power through just because. also. did they get engaged the same christmas?? like, i don't know when the book starts but let's assume october-ish or maybe november?? cannot remember, anyways, did they get engaged the following christmas or am i tripping?? it was all so rushed and just ugh. this book is def not for me lol

What a wonderful story! Brenna Jacobs has a way with words, and crafted this story with great characters, funny situations, and a few awkward moments.

Dahlia was a relatable protagonist. Haven't we all faced situations in life which catapult us into serious thinking and positive change? I loved her humility, her beautiful heart and her willingness to start again.

Connor swept into my heart from the get-go. A lost soul, he shared a part of his soul to comfort Dahlia in her time out need even if he was conflicted about who he assumed she was. I appreciated Ms Jacobs setting the scene - the true Connor - before his insecurities derailed his thoughts. This was the only reason I cheered for Dahlia and Connor from the very beginning... because I held this flicker of hope through all the struggles and disappointments.

Loved this story! Read it!

NB I received an ARC of this novel.

After Dahlia decides to get a cup of coffee in an older part of town, she finds that she needs to go to the restroom after drinking it. When the old floor-to-ceiling door slams shut behind her, Dahlia (having left her cell phone in the car, for perhaps the only time ever) is stuck in the stall until someone hears her cries for help and calls the fire dept.

When the EMTs show up to get her out, there is only one thing that will help keep her calm....talking to keep her mind from freaking out about the small space she is in. Connor is the one that keeps her talking, and answering her questions. She feels an attraction to him before she even sees his face, and he wonders what she looks like.

Any book by Brenna Jacobs is always such a joy to read. This one took the magical world from Magnolia Bay and added in a little of the flirty from her ABC's of love series for the perfect Christmas romance. With a little of You've Got Mail going on mixed with a little of Pride and Prejudice this was a sweet romance. The characters have a redemptive arc from previous books and it was sooo good to see them get their own world-tilting, once in a life time love.

Brenna Jacobs knows how to write great characters. They always have real struggles and fears while feeling like they would be an awesome person to have as a best friend. This book was the perfect Hallmark-esque Christmas movie in a book without too much cheese.

So it was an odd meeting, who wouldn't want to have the most gorgeous guy rescue you from a bathroom stall. Then an expected attraction, one she admits to but he does not. Then assumptions and misjudgments, and of course, constantly running into each other - Dahlia and Connor have their struggles. But she tries not to think about him when she is totally crushing on her Christmas Pen Pal. I mean, she finds a letter to Santa that was misplaced many years ago and starts corresponding with the guy hoping he has grown up to find joy and happiness in his life. He is witty and funny and makes her feel like he sees who she really is, not the outside wrappings from her family and past. Now how does she deal with a frustrating Connor when she discovers he is her pen pal!

I absolutely loved this book! Connor and Dahlia are genuinely one of my favourite book couples!

Pros:
- Amazing character development for such a short book. I got a true sense of who each person was and liked all the secondary characters as well. Both Connor and Dahlia were very likeable and I was happy they got a HEA. I loved both so much I can’t even pick a favourite!
- So. Much. Chemistry. They wrote letters (swoon!!), talked openly, and didn’t play stupid games. There was something so refreshing about reading a story with adults acting like adults and not having contrived communication issues.
- The pace was excellent and left me wanting more.
- Cute epilogue that made me grin

Cons:
- None - I just want more and more!

I wish I could remember who recommended this delightful book to me. I think I bought it both for the price and for the referral. I, pretty much, read it in one sitting (er lying). Not that I meant to, but I didn't want to quit. When the main character volunteers to answer letters to Santa, that was enough to hook me (I used to have that fun job), but when, right off the bat, she locked herself into a tiny restroom stall and couldn't get out, that sounded even more like me, and I fell in love with this crazy rich girl! But does SHE fall in love? Well, read it and find out for yourself. See if YOU can put it down!
