Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer star as old flames Jean Pargetter and Lionel Hardcastle. Their love story was all set for a happy ending in the 1950's when Jean was a student nurse and Lionel, a young army officer but he was posted abroad and they lost touch. Thirty-eight years later, Lionel has returned to London to publish his autobiography and through a strange coincidence, he is reunited with Jean who has set up a secretarial agency.
Specially adapted in six episodes for BBC Radio 2, this hugely popular bittersweet comedy about the reunited lovers asks the burning question: Can the flame of passion still flicker in middle age?
When I stumbled across this audio download, I was confused. Was As Time Goes By a radio show before it was a tv show? The answer is no, it was not. The tv series began in 1992. The radio adaptations began in 1997. Still confused. I can understand a popular radio series becoming a tv show, but the reverse is baffling. There was no new content in the radio show-- it consisted of minor rewrites of specific episodes.
As the show is one of my all-time favorite Britcoms, of course I enjoyed the adaptations, despite being completely familiar with the content. Judi Dench, Geoffrey Palmer, Moira Brooker, and Jenny Funnell are all here, but not Philip Bretherton as Alistair, though-- nobody says "Hey, hey" like Philip.
