"The sky is full of stars and there's room for all to shine"

This novel is not merely a LGBTQ+ novel dealing with teenage love, this is a novel that each and every person can relate to. This is a novel that makes you think back to your teenage years, a novel that makes you reminiscence the sweet beginning of love in your heart, a novel to think back of the first time you felt your heart leap out of you, that feeling of adrenaline rushing through your body, making you feel invincible and at the same time so helpless in a world run by adults who seemed to know everything. Despite your social standing, despite your sexuality or gender, I feel that everyone at least had one moment like that.

If you are looking for a LGBTQ+ novel, this maybe completely not for you. If you are looking for a coming-of-age novel, this is prefect. The manner in which the author pulls you into the story will leave you grasping for more. Even the slightest detail is explained in a way that does not leave you bored but leave you smack in the middle of the snowy roads of China. You are part of the world, walking along side everyone, you are sitting on the bleachers waiting for class 8 to win the basketball match, you are person walking into the supermarket and seeing Gu Fei behind the cashier. The beauty of the novel is not only in the blossoming love story but the intricate development of characters. All praise should be given to the author.

This novel became a hit in China (and now among International fans too) due to the realistic portrayal of these teenagers. The ability for people to sympathize with the characters, the ups and downs of them and how even the tiniest happiness they feel is resonated with the reader too. You maybe in the warm cocoon of you home reading this under your reading lamp but in your head you've been to Jiang Chen's and Gu Fei's town for a long time.

Unfortunately less than half the novel is translated so far and I will have to wait till the end of the translation to start again but I will surely be back to finish this review. Till then Jiayou!

Sa Ye: Run Freely full novel review: I did not expect to love this story and these boys (plus Gu Miao!) so so so much. This is beautiful story of first love, hurt, hope, angst, pain, fear of the future and instability, and exploring loss and loneliness. This is a much more mature school danmei than previous ones I’ve read. It just feels so much deeper than a high school first love story.

I felt actual physical heartache while reading this book. So many tears were shed. I’m still not sure how people call this a slice of life 😭

Jiang Cheng: City boy whose adoptive parents “return” him after 17 years. Smart, angry, aloof, has big feelings, good at basketball, plays piano, potty mouth!

Gu Fei: “Delinquent” local, devoted brother, supportive, smart but doesn’t try, good at photography and basketball, plays guitar

Some things I loved:
🛹Characters felt so real. Everything seemed to happen organically, nothing felt forced
🛹The internal dialogue and thoughts they were both working through. The fear of being rejected😔
🛹 The open and real conversation trying to come out to each other- personally, I have no idea what that’s like but this is how I imagine it
🛹 The way they handle the awkwardness with giggles and laughter
🛹Pan Zhi is the best best friend.
🛹Created their own world and safe space

Other things I loved but possible spoilers:
GF wanting to support and take care of JC so he can do well academically
Calling each other boyfriend
Bebes love to bite!
Switch couple! There is 🌶️ but it’s not explicit

My heart hurt for GF being a caregiver at such a young age and feeling like life can’t move forward and having the feeling of a hopeless future. He carried such a heavy burden mentally and love isn’t always enough

“I want, to look up and see the warm sun on spring grass, and me in your arms; I want, to step on the unknown and walk through time, you’ll hear it if you open your eyes; I want you on my left shoulder, a smile on my right.” Gu Fei looked up at him. “I want, to run free without a care in your eyes; I want one look to last, a lifetime……”

“May we both be as brave as each other.”

The thing about SAYE that sets it apart from other novels in my eyes is how much it makes *me* want to fall in love. To be able to experience even half of what Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei have with each other would be a blessing....

Such a captivatingly beautiful and soul-healing story of two boys finding solace and hope in each other. Wuzhe is the master of writing snarky, clever banter and evoking emotions in me in ways that usually wind up with me crying a river on the cold tile floor of my bathroom LOL. I can never get enough of her writing style—the smooth flow of her words keep me hooked and hungry for more.

As Wuzhe wrote in the author’s notes after the extras, “没有谁的生活会一直完美,但无论什么时候,都要看着前方,满怀希望就会所向披靡。” (“No one’s life is invariably perfect, but no matter what, you must always look ahead; with a heart filled with hope, you’re invincible.”). It’s a much-needed reminder to keep your head up and believe in a better future, regardless of your current circumstances.

I will undoubtedly be rereading the novel and relistening to the audio drama for years and years to come. 🥺💖

This is one of the most beautiful books I've read in my life.
First of all, I gotta say I'm kinda proud of myself haha. This is the first book I read in Chinese, not the translated version! In the beginning I was actually really scared because this book is huge (899000 characters long), and I was worried that my less-than-ideal Chinese would cause me to struggle to understand what was going on, but I shouldn't have worried. This book is so beautiful and well-written that despite a slight language barrier, I was able to not only understand everything but also be wholly and completely immersed in the story.
Ok. Now. Here are some thoughts.

1. The characters are spectacular. Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei are some of the most vividly crafted characters I've ever read in fiction. Jiang Cheng can be prickly and distrustful, but yet at the same time filled with so much hope and passion. Gu Fei can be seemingly arrogant and aloof, but at the same time one of the strongest and most caring and compassionate characters I've ever met. Both juxtapose each other perfectly, and their slow-burn relationship, from a chance encounter at the train station to becoming desk-mates to becoming something more... the way they found comfort in each other in a difficult world, their faithfulness and determination to challenge themselves to change to protect the love... it's beautiful. Every moment of sadness and pain made my heart hurt for them so much, but every moment of joy and happiness made me so unbelievably happy for them. And also, Gu Miao. I adore her. So much love for her. She's the best.
2. The attention to detail. Wu Zhe pays a lot of attention to the little details that make the setting and atmosphere leap from the pages, so that the readers aren't simply reading. They're immersed in the story with the characters. Be it in the classrooms or the basketball court or the snow-covered steel factory or the grassy plains under the sunset... this whole book is just one incredible immersive experience.
3. the passage of time. I always adore books that deal with time, and this one is impeccably written. It starts off during their junior year of high school, and ends after their freshman year of university. During this three-year period, both characters go through so much character development, together and alone, and just watching their relationship with each other and with themselves change for better or for worse is truly a thing of beauty.
4. The humor. Wu Zhe has a very clever and witty voice, and some moments actually had me in tears. Even when the story's pacing was a little slow at times, I'd never even once feel bored, because the humor would just pull me back into the story.
5. The energy. The naturalness. This whole book is basically just coming-of-age, and honestly, every moment in the story is captured beautifully and leaves a wonderfully lingering feeling in the heart. The awkwardness of sitting with someone in a restaurant after starting off on the wrong foot. Or the exhilaration and teamwork and 默契 while playing a basketball game or doing a photoshoot. The devastation of loneliness and despair. The excitement and chaos of going on a trip with your best friends and the people you love the most. Or the wild, unbroken freedom of running through the wilderness with the person closest to your heart. I'm just rambling at this point, but the point is - the energy of youth and passion is brilliant and completely unforgettable.

OK. Now, here are some parts with major spoilers.

Things that made me stupidly happy:
1. The ending. Honestly. Throughout the entire book, I kept on speculating on how the story would end. More than anything, I wanted them to have a happy ending, but at the same time, it was so hard, nearly impossible for them to get it. I thought that JC and GF would break up, with JC potentially even finding a new boyfriend or something (when Xu Xingzhi was introduced, I was freaking out LOL). Or, I thought that Gu Miao would end up dying in an accident, so that GF would be able to leave the town, though these thoughts made me in pain because I really like Gu Miao. As I neared the end of the story, I knew for sure that no matter how devastating the ending was, I would be ok with it, because enough character development had occurred, and I support the author's decision on how to end the story. But when it was a happy ending, with GM healing, JC and GF determined to make things work, going stronger than ever... I was so fucking happy. So relieved, and so, so, so, so, so fucking happy. I have never been so relieved and so happy before for these characters. I'm so happy.

For the most part, I adored this story, but there are also a few parts that made me a little confused. Nothing too dramatic, but just a few queries and a few minor flaws:
1. The gaokao part felt a little slow. Gaokao is super important and I agree that there should be an emphasis on it, but at the same time, that part did feel a little laggy haha.
2. As much as I adore the characters, they are sometimes a little too... powerful. For example, Jiang Cheng has excellent grades, is musically talented, great with a slingshot, excellent athlete and a fighter, not to mention incredibly good-looking to top it off... it's a little unrealistic at times haha. Perhaps emphasize his flaws a little bit more, or make him not as perfect?
3. I would have really enjoyed to see a few threads developed on a little bit more. What exactly happened that day on the ice when GF's father died? What was that all about with Jiang Cheng's adopted family? When the debtors came for Li Hui, I thought that they'd come for Jiang Cheng next? Also, what about Jiang Cheng's birth mother? Just little threads here and there that intrigued me, but weren't too heavily expounded upon.

Overall, I adored this book and thought it was absolutely beautiful. 10/10 recommend. Something everyone must sometime in their life. Aight, I'll stop rambling now haha. thanks for reading! :)

update: so i heard there will be an adaptation of saye (tát dã) in 2020.

what do i think about it? with the chinese censorship that prohibits the representation of gay people on television and other media, the adaptation would surely be a disaster, because love - the core value of the novel - will be deprived from the story. the idea torments me incredibly.

i have had enough of this, seeing art being distorted under the influence of political propaganda and sick totalitarianism. why do we have to go through this lie? tưởng thừa and cố phi love each other and their coming of age journey which celebrates love and the beauty of youth is the core value of saye, and saying otherwise will be a lie, a defamation.

saye has been translated into english under the name "run freely". imagine the fact when a novel called "run freely" will not be able to actually run freely in its adapted form, a form that was distorted to meet the requirements of some homophobic political policies, and its core value will be turned into some subtle homoromantic subtext. A SUBTEXT, minor, irrelevant, cowardice, without any artistic purpose, mainly for queer-baiting. it's 2019 and love still needs to be hidden away as if it's something filthy and unethical. jfc, writing these words makes me extremely sad. saye is a story that is beautiful and worth telling again and again in various means of media - this i believe, however as much as i value and hold it dear in my heart, i believe that it does not deserve to be treated this way. it's just too precious to be ruined, and even without watching it (i won't), the idea alone is enough to break my heart to pieces. the adaptation will be another terrible lie like any other adaptations, saye and any other LGBT stories don't deserve this. we don't either.

let's imagine a saye without love. a saye, without "saye", without all of this

"i want you to give me a simple embrace when i look up at the warm spring grass blades
i want to crush this haze by my feet, walk through time, and when i open my eyes you'll hear the sound
i want you to be there on my left shoulder, smiling on my right
i want to run recklessly in your eyes
i want this glance to last,
a lifetime."

a world deprived of its own meaning, isn't it apocalypse?

chapters 1-26

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

chapters 27-58

Feicheng growing closer and more intimate with one another <3 My honeypies. This story is a perfect blend of joy and misery. One minute I’m laughing and blushing over Feicheng, and the next I’m crying for them. Li Baoguo, it’s on sight when I get you.

Some silly Feicheng moments that had me gasping for air:

“Cheng-ge is omnipresent”

“The fuck? What are you doing Jiang Cheng? Are you really so thirsty! It hasn’t even been two minutes into the movie! The supporting character had come out and screamed only once! She didn’t even have time to die yet!”

“‘You…’ Gu Fei sighed. ‘What kind of angle will get it to reach the back?’”

And now a quote I relate all too well to:

“It was a kind of relationship he had always been avoiding, rejecting, and afraid of, but all the fears and trepidation he’d felt since realizing there was something ‘different’ about himself was now buried under a mountain of elation.”

I can’t wait to see how this book makes me cry more. I can feel it deep in my bones.

Read in original Chinese, review is not based on the English fantranslation.

First of all, I'll like to say, if you are able to do so, please do read this in Chinese. Translation will never be as good as the original. I had a quick glimpse at the fan translation, although it's decent it's nothing compared to the beautiful writing style of 巫哲.

撒野 is a slice of life, coming of age novel that focuses on the family struggles of two young boys living in a rural run down area. The two boys come from extremely different backgrounds with very different struggles, but in each other they find love and hope.

Although there's no major overarching plot, it's still a massive emotional rollercoaster.

Characters
The novel is written mainly from Jiang Cheng's perspective, with some scenes/chapters from Gufei's perspective. Neither of these characters were particularly likeable-at-first-sight, but one will definitely grow to like them.

Jiang Cheng was originally a city boy, living with his well-off educated adoptive parents. Due to some dispute he ended up leaving this adoptive parents in the city and moving in with his poor uneducated biologically father in a rural town. Whereas Gufei has always lived in that small rural town with his mother and younger sister.

Romance
All I can say about this is that, it's done well. As a reader, one can really feel their love for each other. I actually enjoyed that it wasn't cheesy, the love was there without the cheese!

The tl is still ongoing and atm i'm on ch 128 waiting for more chapters to come out but so far this novel has been incredible. It's honestly hard to write anything about it, since no words can do justice to this book or express how much it means to me. Because there are books that you will forget eventually but i feel like saye will always stay in a fresh memory. It just has that kind of impact.

I picked up《撒野》on a whim back when I was just starting to read books in Chinese. While I was vaguely aware of its reputation, I started it mostly because it is set in modern times and therefore, should be much easier to tackle than something like historical or xianxia. I really didn't expect to love it this much.

The driving force of《撒野》are its characters. Both Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei are super well-written. They just feel so three-dimensional and are each relatable in their own ways, as though they're someone I would know in real life. Because of that, I was invested in their stories right from the start and found their growth throughout extremely satisfying. Thanks to the strong character development, the romance really shines.

巫哲 is so good at balancing drama with humor. Despite touching on heavy subject matters, the story still manages to be funny. The pacing is also very well-done. While the book is 145 chapters long, it never drags. I was engaged from beginning to end.

Another thing that struck me is how atmospheric this book is. I have such a vivid image of the town and all its places in my head. While the story takes place over the course of several years, I will always associate《撒野》with winter, when the book first begins.

This is easily one of my favorite books read in recent years and I cannot recommend it enough. Can't wait to check out the rest of 巫哲's works.

I love this novel so much. The characters are so relatable, it was like looking at yourself.

The novel is not just a love story but it also deals with humans struggle in life, their past traumas and how they still continue to chase towards the light.

The story is about not giving up on your loved ones and most importantly, "not giving up on yourself".

And there is this beautiful quote by Jiang Cheng:

《May we can be as brave as each other. 》

9.4/10

I spent over a year reading this book, now I'll probably spend another unreasonably long amount of time on the audio drama too (:
I would write more, but I don't know how to put anything in words, so I'm not going to bother. Now I need to go back to reading hehe

My comfort book. I’ve reread it so many times that the lines are imprinted under my eyelids when I close them I swear. I’ll always find comfort within the pages of this book. Even when I’m like 90

after reading the first officially translated volume, i predicted this would be a book that changes my life. even five minutes after finishing it, i want to go back and start again from the beginning. jiang cheng and gu fei, both as individuals and as a couple, were fully realized to the point that i understood how they would react to things and why, even when they weren't being fully honest about it themselves. i was so deep in their minds i cried for five straight chapters when they were at their emotional low points. i knew they'd pick themselves up and keep walking, but it just killed my heart to see it.

i could go on about the both of their character development, but jiang cheng’s had the starkest difference to me. when he was so distraught after their breakup and threatened the pet store worker, i had a moment of “oh wow, jiang cheng really did used to be like this” because he’d become so genuine and adoring to gu fei and gu miao. the angry, wounded boy he’d been at the start was gone, and seeing that small glimpse of him again was horrific.

and gu miao!! my sweet daughter! i'm so glad she wasn't seen as an obstacle and they found ways to prioritize her without sacrificing too much of themselves.

this is the kind of story about love, found family, and self actualization that i'm always looking for in the back of my mind when i pick up a book. sa ye, you were the greatest joy, and i WILL be back for you.

Enfim simplesmente... perfeito.

DNF. Stopped at chapter 57

Sry I stopped after they got tgt lkjsf oops. I got bored lmao. I know a lot of people like this book but aaaaaaa. I did like it for a while I think but I got bored basically right after they got tgt. There's def more drama and things to come but idk, it feels kinda repetitive but what can you do, it's a hs book. I really can't read contemporary school books I think, where there's no other premise. Just, school, and idk family drama. Like it's giving (Fake Slackers). When I describe these books to my friend, I call them my two "basketball books" even tho basketball isn't the main point lmao but it's like they're so similar actually, hs kids, good at basketball, sucky life, family drama. Yuh. That's about it.

This review is coming a lot later than when I actually was reading the book (like 3 years l;akjsdf) so it's kinda hard to remember my experience but I liked them a decent amt I think but the chemistry wasn't fully hitting for me I think. Sometimes they just randomly started bursting into laughter lkjasdf (this happened a lot a lot actually) and idk lkjsdfs why

If the cdrama adaptation of this ever gets let out of the dungeon, I will def watch it tho

This story is the 'forever favourite' for sooo many people (including me even), and for a very good reason. It's painfully real, all of the buildings, schools, streets and shops described in the story can all be found in real life, and that's what makes it connect so deeply with all the Chinese readers, especially those who grew up in small cities like the one in the book. The storyline is so touching as well and the relationship between the two protagonists is soooo real as well that people would always remember their first crush/romance in high school. Personally, I grew up in a modern city and went abroad pretty early, but reading this really gave me an insight into what the 'normal' high school life is like for most teenagers in mainland China, and that impression is precious for me. Love this story with all my heart.

If I had to recommend one book of the year, it'd be this one. The feelings it gave me when I was reading this are indescribable; I was completely annihilated by how heartwretching it was. I didn't sleep for days to read this. The character development is unmatched - we really grow with Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei. We saw their healing after the trauma brought by their respective families. Gu Fei is truly exceptional. The author did such a good job giving us a realistic perspective of these young men relying on one another to survive. The communication between the MLs was beautiful ✨️ the banter, the confessions, the slow revelations of inner thoughts, handling mental health issues .. 🥹 it was perfection.
