Juliana thought Morzania would be better than Tharis, but after leaving the Dunes and Dires behind, she returns to her homeland to find it unrecognizable. Mages are being persecuted, there's racism in the streets, the Obsidian Knights patrol the land under the orders of the false king, and there is a pandemic on the horizon. Juliana has to keep her magic hidden while trying to help her people. She and Michael do their best to help Cole run a makeshift medical clinic above the local tavern but when medical supplies get low they volunteer to find out what's keeping the Apothecary from delivering the poultices they need. As the people get sicker and the weather worsens Michael and Juliana discover that the Apothecary's apprentice has gone missing with the herbs needed to complete the poultice order. If they can't find him and his supplies, the city of Tramain is doomed to a pandemic that the nobles refuse to admit exists. Unfortunately, the boy went missing in the forest where Obsidian Knights, Slavers, and Bandits run amuck. If the weather doesn't get them before they find the apprentice, their enemies might.
Book two in this series is just as good as the first!
The characters come to life from the pages, and in the short space of time the author manages to let them develop and grow. The interaction between Juliana and Michael is natural.
Juliana is back in her homeland and it is nothing like she remembered. Being a Mage is a death sentence and the Obsidian Knights are racists, thinking they are the top of the pack. When Juliana and Michael are faced with a problem, they manage to fool two Obsidian Knights to get out of the city, but there they walk into a trap. Oops!
As previously reviewed for the first book, this book automatically gets 3 stars for the fact the author put their soul out for the world to see. It take a ton of gumption to publish a book.
Now, onto the rating...
Once you get beyond the first chapter, again, the book gets better. The first chapter, like the first book, is packed full of memories, recap and newer world building to set the scene for Juliana. The grammar still made my head scream... Chapter 2 and beyond is much better. The dialogue is a lot of telling but it's necessary for story progression. If this author had an editor, I would demand a refund. A good editor could really polish this book. This story has amazing potential. The world building is absolutely intriguing.
In all, it's a good story for a kid/teen. Lots of magic, world building and overall a great female MC. The world building and interesting situations Juliana found herself in kept me engaged well enough. I will be reading the final book.
Juliana is such a bada** in this book. She stands her ground and protect those around her. I would like to include that her way of handling slaves is pretty intense. Michael, I do question a bit but he's good on supporting Juliana and helping Cole. Milo is adorable in his own way. Highly recommend.
