Housekeeper-slash-entrepreneur Ella Bradley prides herself on being ready for anything. After all, with a father who died—and lied to her—and a stepmom and stepsister who despise her, she has no one else to depend on. But on the biggest night of her life, she’s unprepared to be trapped in an elevator with the man of her dreams.
Wealthy prince-to-a-fortune Adrian Vassos wants nothing more than to shed his reputation as a party boy and prove that he is a savvy businessman. Even, a gentleman. But when he’s trapped with a woman who knows his reputation but not his face, he gives into the temptation to be someone else—and lies.
When serendipity brings them together again—this time to work off community service—can their combined sentences spark a new ending? Maybe…if Adrian’s lies don’t find him out. Again.
The magic of Deep Haven enchants in this modern-day Cinderella story.
Andrea Christenson is a contemporary Christian romance author. She’s a pastor’s wife with a biblical studies degree and over 20 years of ministry experience. Her stories are clean, faith-filled, and family-honoring, and can be trusted to entertain the heart, engage the mind, and edify the soul.
Andrea lives in Plymouth, MN, with her husband and two daughters.
I couldn’t wait to get back to Deep Haven tonight!
This story features two outsiders who are hoping to find a sense of belonging in Deep Haven.
Ella Bradley is trying to make it on her own and comes up against all kinds of roadblocks. When she meets Adrian Vassos her life quickly spirals downwards until fate throws the two of them together and they decide to join forces.
Adrian has been trying to break free of his brother’s influence and the hold his father has on him. He’s often misunderstood, even when he’s trying to do the right thing. Running into his date’s sister at a gala event changes his life.
It is always wonderful to meet up with characters from earlier in the series and see how they’re doing. The different authors in this series ensure variety and I love it!
This retooled fairytale is wonderful. Despite knowing how it’ll probably end, there are enough unforeseen twists to keep readers engaged. I just had to know if Cinder-Ella got her prince!
This is book 2 of the Deep Haven series, but it can be read as a standalone. I read it through the Amazon Kindle Unlimited program.
"The man was committing all sorts of crimes here. Thievery of her heart. Kidnapping of her common sense, and maybe even first-degree murder of her righteous anger."
Such a delightful debut novel from Andrea Christenson. I'm a relative newbie to Deep Haven so it was a fun adventure meeting some of the characters from Susan May Warren's Deep Haven novels and her Christiansen Family novels and getting to know Ella and Adrian who are also relatively new to Deep Haven. Add in the premise of a Cinderella retelling and you have a perfect contemporary romance to snuggle up with. The writing flows smoothly, the plot moves at a great pace with tons of misunderstandings and hilarious scenes, the characters are lovable, and Ella and Adrian's faith journey is heart-warming. If you're looking for a sweet contemporary romance with all the feels, look no further.
Creative, passionate, and determined Ella is our contemporary Cinderella, who is literally in the cleaning business and looking to change the world one cleaning solution at a time. Adrian is our Prince Charming, whose expansive family business builds hotels and water parks. When Adrian attempts to build one of their hotels in Deep Haven, his insecurity, past failures, and desperate need to succeed in this venture clashes soundly with Ella's focused passion to make the world safer by reducing chemicals introduced into the environment. Their unique jobs makes the story stand out in the sea of contemporary romance novels and I enjoyed learning about production of organic cleansers and the process of commercial development. Their friendship and blossoming romance is so lovely and sigh-inducing. I am totally loving this new Deep Haven Collection and can't wait for the third book in the series!
I received the book from the publisher and also via JustRead Publicity Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.
Characters: Adrian and Ella were both fun characters to read about. I enjoyed hearing about Ella and her soap-making business because that's not something I've read much about in Christian fiction. Normally, guys with a reputation for being charmers (like Adrian) annoy me, but Adrian didn't have any creepy characteristics. I also enjoyed seeing characters from Deep Haven again.
Language: Clean.
Moral: The main moral that I can remember was that God is always faithful. I enjoyed that moral! Apart from this moral, there were a few lines that struck me as feel-good Christianity, but they were just a few lines.
Plot: Plenty of dramatic moments, character relationships, and plot twists kept me flipping pages.
Romance: Clean. A few kisses.
Writing: Andrea Christenson has an engaging writing style that worked really well for this book. I look forward to reading more from her soon!
Overall: Can't Buy Me Love was an entertaining read, and I'd recommend it to those who like Christian fiction and contemporary romance.
Can’t Buy Me Love by Andrea Christenson is a charming contemporary Christian novel loosely based on the Cinderella story. It is the second book in the Deep Haven Collection series. We all have dreams. It is important to pursue our own dreams and not to be pressured into following the dreams of others. Our dreams will drive us forwards with a passion and a focus. Sometimes we feel we have to work to earn our place within our family. In contrast in God’s family we are loved for who we are. “[God] loves you for yourself, not for what you can do for Him.” We witness characters who only do things for what they can receive in return. In contrast there are those who give out of the love in their hearts. There is the theme of trust. We can always trust God. When people have let us down in the past, we find that trust does not come so easily. God never leaves us. “Even when believers are unfaithful, God still shows up.” Even when we do not feel God or even acknowledge Him, He is there, faithfully by our side walking us through life. Andrea Christenson has created a wonderful set of characters. The verbal exchanges between the two lead characters were particularly fun and amusing. There was a wonderful light hearted tone. Can’t Buy Me Love was a charming read that will leave you smiling. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
Can’t Buy Me Love was a cute story. Although it was a nod to Cinderella, this novel definitely had its own twists and turns, which kept it unique. Readers who have enjoyed the other books set in the Deep Haven community will enjoy seeing a few familiar faces, however, new readers with no prior knowledge of Deep Haven can easily pick this book up and enjoy it as a stand alone novel.
The way Ella and Adrian met was a good way to quickly throw together two people from very different backgrounds and helped to create a connection between the two. Whether it was a good connection or a bad connection remained to be seen.
It was definitely a comedy of errors that landed these two doing community service together. I must admit that the handling of their cases had me cringing and a bit angry with the mismanagement. However, it all worked for the good of the story and I thought the way these two bonded as they began to get to know each other was very sweet.
There was angst and misunderstanding along the way, as well as some emotional and spiritual growth that had to occur for both characters as time passed in the story. Although I liked these characters, I did not connect with them on the same level that I have with many of the other characters from the various books set in Deep Haven. But, all in all, Can’t Buy Me Love is a fun addition to the Deep Haven Collection.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Engaging from the beginning, once I picked it up I didn't want to put it down. Cinderella re-tellings are my absolute favorite, and this one did not disappoint! Ella Bradley is a hard-working and enterprising young woman, struggling to make her own way. I admired her work ethic, she has great ideas, and a strong sense of determination throughout. One of my favorite things is that even though she doesn't have blood family to lean on, she finds a wonderful group of supportive friends both new and old.
Adrian has a reputation that he's been trying to shake by taking a more serious interest in the family business. I loved the positive influence that his mother's faith had on his life, and how he handles the obstacles in his path. Adrian and Ella have excellent chemistry, with an adorable meet cute, and I loved how it takes off from there.
Overall, this is was an utterly enjoyable read throughout, with likable, well developed characters who had fantastic interaction and dialogue. A charming read set in Deep Haven, featuring cameos from old familiar faces, which made me smile. I absolutely adored this Deep Haven spin on Cinderella, you won't want to miss it either!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I really enjoyed this story. For the author’s debut it was well rounded story with characters to love and root for, and had my adrenaline pumping at one time. The author did a great job of bringing the same feel to Deep Haven that Susan May Warren had, especially with bringing back some beloved characters - I did not feel a different author was writing their voices.
I thought I had the plot line figured, since it was a new take on Cinderella, but the author kept me surprised with where she took the characters.
Another thing I've discovered is that love is precious. You have to hold on to it for as long as you can."
I enjoyed the theme about finding out who you are in Christ. Do you want to please me or trust that God has the best in stored for you.
Ella, I don't have all the answers. But one thing I do know is that God cares very much. He wants good for you, not bad."
I've found all the scenes with making cleaning material using more natural products and essential oils very interesting, since this is currently a journey I’m on as well.
The only thing weird for me was the name of the male lead, Adrian - my aunt’s name is Adrienne so was difficult to picture a male version of this name. 😳 - but that was just something personal to me.
I hope to see more of these characters in future books of Deep Haven and looking forward to more books by this author.

Return to the wonderful town of Deep Haven in Andrea Christenson's debut novel, Can't Buy Me Love. With many familiar residents of Deep Haven making cameo appearances, longtime fans of Susan May Warren's will not want their journey back to Deep Haven to end.
Readers will enjoy meeting housekeeper Ella Bradley and her chance encounter with wealthy Adrian Vassos. Suddenly their lives intersect again in a surprising turn of events that neither one expect. This modern day Cinderella tale is complete with a cruel stepmother and stepsister, and readers will be rooting for Ella and Adrian to get their happy ending.
Can't Buy Me Love is recommended for readers of contemporary romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
Can't Buy Me Love is a cute Cinderella retelling! I love how author Andrea Christenson keeps the spirit of the fairy tale while making the story all her own.
Ella and Adrian had instant chemistry (their "meet cute" reminded me of the delightfully cheesy TV movie A Christmas Kiss), and I loved watching their relationship develop.
It was also fun to see other Deep Haven residents playing a role, particularly Grace Christiansen Sharpe and Derek Christiansen. (And there's lots of name dropping of people from other Deep Haven novels, as well.)
I appreciated how Ella and Adrian each had to go through their own journeys before they could have a stable relationship - she had to deal with her anger toward her late father, and he had to decide if he truly wanted to follow in his father's footsteps. And they each found a stronger relationship with the Lord in the process.
I will admit that I found something that was teased throughout the novel to be a bit anticlimactic upon its reveal, but otherwise, I enjoyed every second I spent reading this book. Can't Buy Me Love is an excellent, highly recommended entry in the Deep Haven Collection. 4 stars
Disclosure of material connection: I received this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and the opinions expressed are my own.
Susan May Warren has handpicked some new authors to write stories that take the reader back to the fictional Minnesota town of Deep Haven on the North Shore of Minnesota. Susie has introduced us to Deep Haven and the residents therein in two of her previous book series: The Deep Haven Series and The Christiansen Family Series. With this new addition to the Deep Haven collection, the author does a great job of taking the reader back to the lovely little town with the residents we’ve come to know and love.
Ella Bradley and Adrian Vassos couldn’t be more opposite. She is living on a shoestring, and Adrian appears to have access to unlimited wealth. After a first meeting, where Adrian lies about his identity to Ella, she wants nothing more to do with him and his party-boy reputation.
Except, through a series of unfortunate events and misunderstandings, both Ella and Adrian are thrown together again, this time fulfilling community service hours in Deep Haven. Of course, sparks fly, but will they turn into a burning fire or dying embers?
Can’t Buy Me Love is a story about forgiveness, trust, and letting God be in charge. I recommend it!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
'I wish I had someone like that, someone to be my safe place.'
When housekeeper Ella Bradley is stuck in an elevator with wealthy playboy Adrian Vassos, she isn't aware of his true identity. Adrian sees Ella doesn't know who he is, so he lies about himself, allowing Ella to think he is someone else. Then a strange happenstance brings them together in Deep Haven to do community service. How will his lie play out now? How will this situation play out? Especially now that both have feelings for the other.
Return to the wonderful little town of Deep Haven, MN created by Susan May Warren years ago. It's a precious and special place and it was so much fun to connect with old friends who live there and have been featured in previous books of Warren's.
Andrea Christenson has added to the Deep Haven Collection series with a wonderful and well written book that is just a delight. She gives us characters that are so well fleshed out they seem real. That is a big deal to me when I read a book. I need to connect with characters and I did here! Well done! Recommended.
My thanks to the publisher and author for a copy of this book. I received no compensation and the opinion in this review is completely my own.
Welcome back to Deep Haven! I’m so happy to be here again!
CAN’T BUY ME LOVE is the second entry in the Deep Haven Collection from Sunrise Publishing. I reviewed the first book, STILL THE ONE, in January, and have been waiting not-so-patiently for CAN’T BUY ME LOVE. It will be released March 16, but lucky me, I got an advance copy!
CAN’T BUY ME LOVE is an updated fairy tale, a Cinderella retelling, set in Deep Haven, on the shores of Lake Superior, in northern Minnesota.
Ella Bradley moved to Deep Haven looking for a fresh start. She’s a housecleaner, soap maker, small business owner, and budding entrepreneur. She just needs to get her foot in the door with the Vassos hotel chain to make her pitch. She doesn’t expect to meet the playboy son of the founder. And he doesn’t mean to lie about who he is. Not exactly.
CAN’T BUY ME LOVE has everything I love about the Deep Haven series. A town that treats everyone like family. (Well, except for Ella’s landlord, that is.) A gentle romance that grows organically. Chocolate chip cookies. A spiritual growth arc.
The only sad thing now is waiting for book 3, CRAZY FOR YOU, out in May.
I received a free copy of CAN’T BUY ME LOVE from the publisher. This did not induce me to review the book, favorably or not.
Ella and her prince aren't the usual fairy tale couple with their troublesome "misunderstandings" with the law.
I didn't like Ella at first and I did like Adrian with a dislike of Della's assumptions.
Soon Ella rose to the challenge and became a heroine I could like and even connected.
The story was somewhat lighthearted due to Adrian's way of always joking and yet somewhat sad with Ella's past along with the misunderstandings and the lies that got about.
Over all, this modern fairy tale is quite cute and one that romance lovers will enjoy with the message of hope woven through.
18+ die to attraction and a side character's inappropriate actions.
I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
The plot and characters go so well together, each developing, making the book very captivating and enjoyable to read. A wonderful swoony love story for lovers of romance. But not just romance but profound life lessons that inspires and build.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
I absolutely loved this amusing take on the Cinderella story by Andrea Christenson and Susan May Warren. It was so fun! Aptly named Can’t Buy Me Love, this story demonstrates the fact that ‘love cannot be bought’. Prince Charming, aka Adrian Vassos, rich businessman and “irresponsible playboy” and Ella Bradley, housekeeper and entrepreneur become trapped in an elevator together. From that point on, if they didn’t have bad luck, they wouldn’t have any at all! They seemed to keep running into each other! And running into trouble. “Prince Charming to the rescue, again, and she had to stop thinking that way. Right now. Because right now, Mr. Charming was also Adrian the Cat Burglar, and she was his accomplice. “ But as in all things, even what we see as bad, God can work for our good. And that “In our dark times, God shows up”. Both of these characters were searching for someone to belong to, a place to belong and a family. They find in God and in each other real happiness and purpose. Returning to Deep Haven and the Christiansen’s resort was a happy bonus! I really enjoyed how involved the Christiansen family was in this story. A great debut for Andrea! I recommend it highly!
In this modern retelling of Cinderella, the prince needs rescuing just like Cinderella. It’s a story about Ella Bradley and Adrian Vassos. Ella cleans houses and wants to launch her own soap making business. Adrian is the son of a rich hotel developer who wants to repair his party boy image. When they’re thrust together doing community service in Deep Haven, sparks fly. It’s a delightful book, with laugh out loud and heart tugging moments. Ella and Adrian are relatable characters that you can’t help but like. They have chemistry. Christenson has captured the feel of Deep Haven, and the perfect mix of humor and seriousness that makes for an entertaining read. It’s a faith-based book, but doesn’t get preachy. Can’t Buy Me Love is a five-star book that will leave you feeling satisfied.
Can't Buy Me Love by Andrea Christenson Book 2 in the Deep Haven Collection Rating: 4/5 Release date: March 16, 2021
Who doesn't love a good Cinderella retelling? LOL. The romantic in me just loves the idea and I must say that Andrea Christenson does a good job of blending a contemporary love story in a classic fairytale complete with a "glass slipper".
Spurred on by the tragic death of her mother, Ella Bradley is someone who wants to make a difference and has found a way to do that with the cleaning products she developed. She sets out to make a deal with the hotel conglomerate she owns a half-share in but is thwarted by a malfunctioning elevator. However, she finds the hour or so stuck with a handsome stranger a big plus until she finds out his true identity is not just Roger but Adrian Roger Vassos, the notorious but charming son of the man she plans to make a deal with. Meanwhile, Adrian's lie may have long-lasting consequences if he wants to pursue a relationship with the beautiful and intelligent Ella Bradley, who he can't seem to get out of his mind. His waterpark resort proposal must pass so he can prove to himself and his father that he is not a failure. When Ella discovers he plans on building that monstrosity of a waterpark in her own town of Deep Haven, she gets even more frustrated with the man. Misunderstandings and circumstances ensue and bring the two back together to do some community service in Deep Haven while Adrian and Ella try to convince each other that their own ideas are better. However, spending so much time with each leads to heartfelt conversations and realizations, which neither could confront before. Will misunderstandings continue to plague this would-be relationship? Can Adrian find his true purpose for being in Deep Haven? Can Ella escape the shame of her past and find a way to pursue her dreams?
Wow. I always love a good Deep Haven story. I was excited to receive an advanced copy of this new book. Although Andrea Christenson is a new author to me, I felt she did a good job of writing the beautiful love story with its fun quirks and antics. I found the spiritual parts not quite as emotional as Susan May Warren's writing but they still held really good biblical truths that were relevant and genuine. I loved getting to know her new characters as they were introduced to the magic of Deep Haven. The misunderstandings that occurred with Ella and Adrian were hilarious as each just kept getting worse and worse. I enjoyed reading about the beauty of Deep Haven and the different activities available to tourists. (I wish I could go visit this beautiful place).
Highly recommend if you enjoy clean, Christian romance with humor and heart.
My thanks to the publisher for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.
Best-selling author Susan May Warren and debut author Andrea Christiansen take readers back to the tightly-knit community of Deep Haven, MN, with this inspirational contemporary romance novel.
In Can’t Buy Me Love, wealthy playboy Adrian Vassos wants to prove he has business acumen to his father. When Adrian is trapped in an elevator with housekeeper Ella Bradley who doesn’t recognize him, he hides his true identity. She is en route to pitch an eco-business proposal to his father. After a few mishaps, they find themselves sentenced to community service together. Can they overcome Adrian’s lies and their different backgrounds?
Andrea Christianson’s debut novel shows great promise - it has interesting characters, faith elements, and an interesting twist on the Cinderella tale. This sweet clean romance strikes just the right chords for a contemporary Cinderella retelling. The plot moves along at the right pace and has a number of humorous elements.
Fans of Warren’s Deep Haven & Christianson Family series will welcome cameos of their favorite Deep Haven characters. The themes in Can’t Buy Me Love are forgiveness, family history, and trust. Adrian and Ella have to decide whether to follow the footsteps of their respective fathers, or choose a new path.
Recommended for adult readers and Susan May Warren fans. Readers will enjoy a return to Deep Haven as well as the next book by Anderson!
I will never turn down an opportunity to return to Susan May Warren’s Deep Haven community and the host of fun, quirky characters I’ve met there through the years. One of my absolute favorite fictional towns. Andrea Christenson’s debut novel, Can’t Buy Me Love is such a delight from beginning to end. She created two characters I couldn’t help but root for and that initial meeting incident was both hilarious and endearing. I particularly enjoyed getting to know the heroine, Ella - her passion for natural cleaning products was unique and relatable. The author did such an incredible job of making me understand why Ella and Adrian were the way they were. I am a character-driven person. Plot is important to me, but not nearly as much as characters. Character motivation is so important and Andrea delivered in spades. Such a fun twist on a Cinderella story, complete with an awful step mother and step sister. I also enjoyed visiting with Colleen Decker again. I hope to see more of her in the future. I highly recommend this book and series!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This book was another great trip back to Deep Haven! I loved the type of Cinderella type twist this story had, loved the banter between the two main characters. This book has that fun element in a contemporary that is exactly what pulls me in. The awkward "oh no!" scenes, the playful flirty scenes, the obstacles that you get to see the characters work through.
This book was just a delight to read, I loved the on page chemistry that the two main characters had. I loved the way the author drew me in and allowed me to escape to my favorite fictional town. And while it was fun it had depth and a great message woven into it! I recieved a copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions in this review are honest and completely my own.
I'm ready to pack my bags and move to Deep Haven, MN! I'm not convinced it doesn't exist even though the authors are clear that it's a fictional town. Listen, this Minnesota gal gets all of the "Minnesota nice" vides in this story!
I haven't ever read any retellings, and while Can't Buy Me Love has a light touch of Cinderella, it's ALL Deep Haven!
Ella has made her way to Deep Haven to make a new start. Unfortunately, that start has hit some snags and it's hard to not feel sorry for her. It was so fun to notice the underlying retelling, but not have it stick out as we got to know her. It's cute that her father was the "King of Clean" and she's starting her own environmentally friendly cleaning line.
Her meet-cute with Adrian was pretty funny, but it all blows up in his face. Top off that meeting with her "wicked" stepsister entering the scene and the meet-cute ends up being disastrous. Honestly, it was easy to have a quick soft spot for Adrian. Yes, he's got a not-so-glowing past, but he's resolved to change that. Of course, that plan is to take place in none other than Deep Haven!
Just when you think Deep Haven is the place to escape to and start all over, people are being handcuffed, put in jail cells, being "defended" by someone who doesn't seep to give a hoot, and a judge who seems to not give one whit about finding out the truth. Hence, the shared community service both end up committed to.
As we all know, Deep Haven is full of friendly, God fearing folk who come along just in time to lend a hand. I'm here to tell you again, like I did in Still the One's review, Minnesota nice is truly a thing and tends to shine brightly in small towns. I love when Deep Haven characters from other books show up in these stories. There's a cohesiveness that can't be beat!
And just like any good Minnesotan, Adrian has meddlesome ladies in his life in the form of his mom and cousin, Athena. hahaha They're both interested in his love life and he's not so interested in their input. Athena is not subtle in any way and definitely does not take a hint.
Adrian and Ella are on opposite sides of the fence when it comes to the waterpark he wants to build in Deep Haven. You can understand why he wants to prove to his father that he's a good businessman, but at what cost? Ella and he are out to show the world that they can be successful in their own right and it will take a wing and a prayer for them to figure out what God really has for them!
While you get the sense of Deep Haven running through this story, you can see how Andrea's writing is different than Rachel's, but you still feel Susan's tether that keeps them tied together. With the sampler of book 3 at the end, I'm already looking forward to book three!
*I received this book from the publisher. This is my personal opinion.
Return to Deep Haven, the land of second chances. In this story, Ella and Adrian are disappointed by their earthly fathers and discover that their Heavenly Father is patiently standing by with unconditional love and acceptance that had nothing to do with their performance. Encourage your faith while reading this sweet Cinderella retelling.
Enjoy another scenic hike through picturesque Deep Haven, the town where misunderstandings abound but hold potential for a meet cute. A host of local leadership, citizens, family and nature are out to get Ella Bradley and Adrian Vassos. The bad guys, male and female alike, are cringe-worthy and prompt several thoughts and emotions, possibly aloud.
Underlying all the events is a lesson in building a life you love in spite of opposition, outside expectations and hostility. Andrea Christenson’s edition to the Deep Haven series is enjoyable and a genuine continuation of the beloved Susan May Warren’s novels.
I received a complimentary copy of the book without obligation. This review is my opinion.
Andrea Christenson does a great job making characters you want to stand up and fight for. Her modern day Cinderella story was a sweet read with lovable characters. She will have you turning pages to see how the characters learn to trust in God and rest in His love while also falling in love with one another.
Thank you Sunrise Publishing for the advanced copy. I was in no way compensated and this review is of my own words.
Andrea Christenson introduces us to Deep Haven newbies, Ella Bradley and Adrian Vassos. These two are from opposite sides of the tracks and as different from one another as salt is from pepper, or are they? As their worlds collide they stumble in to one mishap after another and end up having to join forces rather than stay in their well established respective corners. Ella just wants to give her pitch to the man in charge. Adrian just wants to prove himself worthy to his father. As the floor falls out from beneath their feet Ella and Adrian discover they are both vying for the same man's attention and approval. As they journey on they realize the approval of Mr. Vassos is not nearly as important as the approval of the Almighty changing their paths to success and altering their lifelong dreams. This is another Deep Haven winner! Christenson hits a home run as she picks up the mantel in the Deep Haven series.
I loved how Ella stood up for what she believed in - a clean environment and agreed with her that a water park resort is not what they need in beautiful Deep Haven! I wanted Ella to continue pursuing her environmental friendly cleaning business. Billionaire playboy Adrian turned out to be an okay guy but I still am not sure how impressed I am with him! I enjoyed several humorous scenes in Can't Buy Me Love! The wonderful people in Deep Haven make you want to keep coming back for more of this series. I received a complimentary advance reader copy of Can't Buy Me Love from the author and Sunrise Publishing. This is my honest opinion.
Adrian and Ella's story is a modern-day Cinderella retelling but the misunderstandings almost crippled their romance before it could get off the ground.
I loved Ella. She was a dreamer who wasn't afraid of hard work. At the same time, her past made for some interesting beliefs about herself, God, and others. She had to learn that God loved her and would provide people and resources to help her.
Adrian was a great lead. He had made a bunch of mistakes in his past but he had to get over it. Our past can easily trap us into a cycle. Adrian had to learn that his past doesn't define him.
Throughout Can't Buy Me Love, the theme that God loves us was prevalent. We didn't have to do anything for Him to love us, all we have to do is accept His love. Both Adrian and Ella had to internalize that message.
Can't Buy Me Love is book two in the Deep Haven collection but can be read as a standalone. There is a thread that weaves throughout the two books and you'll recognize some characters if you read the first book (or any of the Deep Haven series) but it will not detract from your enjoyment of Can't Buy Me Love.
I received an advanced reader's copy from the publishers through Just Read Tours; a positive review was not required.
Adored this book! And the last one! :) Love living in Deep Haven again and hearing from all the beloved characters from the Christiansen Family series. The communication is *top tier* which is something I always look for in a good book. I'm so grateful for the way the characters suss out their differences, disagreements or misunderstanding. *so* satisfying and mature. I loved the deeper message behind this story regarding what really matters in our lives. It had a teeny bit of a Cinderella theme to it too, which was fun and cute. Loved Adrian and Ella, looking forward to hearing from them in the next book!
Can’t Buy Me Love by Andrea Christenson and Susan May Warren mixes a modern-day Cinderella story with some unique plot turns, moderate character development, and a sweet romance. Ella and Adrian’s initial meeting snagged my attention and set the stage for much of this novel and its unusual predicaments. Christian fiction rarely harbors stories involving community service and this novel offered refreshingly original scenes. Having worked in the legal field, I found some of the legal procedures (or lack thereof) questionable, but I suspended my cynicism in favor of giving the story a chance.
The creativity in Can’t Buy Me Love shined, but when I finished the final page, I wished the story had been deeper. Ella and Adrian’s personal issues linger through the story until they resolve quickly toward the end. I cheered when these two had their breakthrough moments, but longed to see the benefits/consequences play out. It felt very much like they grasped a truth, took an initial action on it, and then the story was over.
Can’t Buy Me Love by Andrea Christenson and Susan May Warren lands as the second installment in the Deep Haven Collection series. While this novel integrates characters from Warren’s original Deep Haven series and Christianson Family series, Can’t Buy Me Love works perfectly fine as a stand-alone novel. I have read some of the original books, but not all, and I enjoyed catching cameos of prior characters. Fans of the original series will likely enjoy visiting Deep Haven with these new characters.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
CAN'T BUY ME LOVE is a story of second chances, forgiveness and letting go all wrapped up in a delightfully sweet romance. This is a story with small-town charm that will make readers laugh, sigh from some swoon-worthy moments, and finish inspired to trust more in the God who loves them. Definitely recommended to sweet inspirational romance readers and fans of Deep Haven.
I really loved both of the main characters from the start! The meet cute was so much fun! Getting stuck in an elevator for a little bit definitely allowed these characters to share parts of themselves and also produced some great banter. I loved how Ella had dreams to really change the world in her own way and the down-to-earth woman she was. I also loved how Adrian was fun and charming, but also had a level of integrity and desire to do what was right. They both had baggage so there were some things that they had to work through to find happiness in the end.
I also loved the setting in Deep Haven with all the small-town charm and lots of cameos from favorite characters. The story had some great moments, both of friendship, of romance and of introspection and faith. Then there was the plot of a this big-city wealthy guy, Adrian, who doesn't think he'll be staying in the town long, who wants to build a resort and water park to prove something to his dad, and finds that the town and one girl in particular has stolen his heart. Add in Ella's role of trying to find herself and make a life doing what she believes in, who has her own self-doubts and anger towards her deceased father, and a town that has become a home and found family to her. It was an entertaining story that kept me turning the pages from beginning to end.
I did have a few minor issues with the story here and there. Nothing too serious. Some parts felt a bit too unrealistic. I also wanted Ella to actually have to fight for Adrian. She got a bit crazy and I wasn't completely sure she actually deserved Adrian so I wanted her to have to make it up to him more than she did.
In the end, was it what I wished for? This is a delightful story, set in a charming town, with wonderful characters. Lots of feels with this one and a story that will leave readers inspired and happily content.
