Twin Torn

There's a rumor floating around that we read the Mayan calendar wrong. That the end of the world is really going to happen on October 13, 2023, which agrees with the properly translated Cairo calendar. It's not a rumor.
The problem with having the entire world hanging in the balance, is: There's nowhere to run. Wrong place? Wrong time? It doesn't matter. It's all wrong. All of it. The only way to know you've won, is if everything is still in one piece at the end of the countdown.
The problem with having an identity crisis is: One minute, you're playing at hero. The next, you're regaining consciousness, covered in blood; with dead bodies strewn all over the place, wondering what just happened.
All Ash ever wanted was to be normal, just like everyone else. To fit in. Now everything's a mess. Maybe he should have just slept in.

This book was sent to me by NetGalley.

As an avid lover of fantasy stories, I love to read about witches, faeries, werewolves, vampires, and the like. But sometimes, all I need is something new. Fantasy written from a different perspective. An alternative point of view. Sure, a pack of werewolves saving the world is wonderful. But what is even better is a group consisting of many different supernatural beings, united, fighting for a common goal. Therefore, Twin Torn was a refreshing change for me. Though the execution and composition could have been better, the book was intriguing and unique, with a well-thought-out plot.

Ash is desperate to find out what he is. He finds himself feeding on pedestrians and craving blood on a full moon. He finds himself having sudden bursts of supernatural strength. But he can walk in the sunlight. And if he's a werewolf, then why does he crave blood? During this quest to discover his identity, Ash finds himself saving a slave girl, Kayala, from a bunch of soldiers. It turns out that Kayala and those soldiers are from a different world, a world called Pandoria. Kayala and Ash grow close, and Ash begins to develop feelings for her. However, he worries that his tendency to feed on people on a full moon might cause him to hurt Kayala. During his quest, he is drawn to a lair, where he encounters a woman called Jinx. She is an abnormally strong creature, who was given her power by her master, a dragon. Jinx agrees to help Ash find out what he is.

Meanwhile, the soldiers, while looking for Kayala, come across a girl, Inalia, who looks exactly like her. Though the commander finds out that Inalia is not Kayala, she is scared that her ruler, the Queen of Pandoria, will kill her if she does not bring Kayala back. She trains Inalia to behave exactly like Kayala and takes her to Pandoria. Back at Ash's house, Kayala sees a missing-person's report on Inalia on the news. Struck, she realizes that she must have a twin sister, who she barely knew before she was taken from her home. After some investigation with Ash, Kayala finds out that Inalia has been taken by the Pandorians. Determined to save her sister, Kayala and Ash join forces with Jinx, her subject, Twister, and a werewolf, Alyssa. When they find out exactly what the Queen has in mind for Inalia, they rush over to save her, and, hopefully, stop the Queen from carrying out her terrible mission.

When I first started reading this book, I nearly DNFed it. I'm not a huge fan of books that have too many POVs or stories at once, and that is what this one had. At first, it was hard for me to connect dots and make sense of what was happening since a new character was introduced every five minutes, and a new story was started. However, once the dots connected, and the stories formulated into one, I had better luck keeping up, and grew curious and excited. Additionally, I thought that at times, the author gave too much unnecessary and boring detail which made me restless. At some points, I had no idea what was happening due to too much information and too little explanation. I feel that the story would have been much better if there were slightly less things happening at the same time.

On a lighter note, the writing style was excellent. A lot of the descriptions were detailed and interesting. The author clearly thought this story through and put in a lot of effort into formulating the plot. The characters were interesting and well-developed, the plot twists were unexpected and intriguing, and the suspense, though only present at the end of the book, was well done and gripping. The different perspectives provided a valuable insight into the thought processes of different characters, enabling us to sympathize, to a certain extent, with both sides. I felt that the ending could have been better, but since this is just one book of a saga, I suppose that's alright.

I won this book through goodreads. There's so much going on in this book meshing the past and the present throughout the story lines of the main characters that it's not always clear how it all fits and makes it so intriguing. Every time I thought I understood how things fit, I was pushed in another direction. Paranormal characters abound, multiple worlds exist, and the end of the world is eminent. What more could you ask for? Looking forward to the rest of series!

The first half of this book had my head spinning. I really couldn't grasp where the storyline was going. Too many different points of view I suppose. Thankfully the second half was better. Not great but decent read. Must have patience to get through the first half. Three stars for creativity and description.
