Marisa Noelle is the author behind a treasure trove of young adult and adult novels across multiple genres, but they all have running themes of mental health or the ocean. She tends to gravitate towards the speculative arena and loves to write science-fiction, fantasy, horror, dystopian, romance, romantasy, or a combination of them all.

Marisa's books include:
The Shadow Keepers—a spine-tingling tale to keep you up all night and semi-finalist of the BBNYA book awards.
The Unraveling of Luna Forester—a novel impossible to talk about because of its huge twist, but it snagged several awards, including: First Place Incipere Award, WriteBlend Finalist, BBYNA Semi-Finalist, Bookshelf Finalist shelf.
The Unadjusteds Trilogy delves into one of her favourite genres—dystopian. The Unadjusteds, the Rise of the Altereds, and The Reckoning make up the trilogy, but there are eleven further companion novellas that follow the secondary characters. The Unadjusteds also placed as a semi-finalist in the BBNYA awards. There are also eleven origin story novellas set in The Unadjusteds universe that are completely FREE when you subscribe to my website.

When Marisa's not weaving literary spells, she's helping mold the future of MG and YA authors as a mentor for the Write Mentor program.

When not writing, Marisa likes to imagine herself as a mermaid, and can often be found in the local pool…or lake…or ocean. Despite her undeniable bookworm credentials since she was knee-high to a grasshopper, the author gig took Marisa by surprise. You see, she had a secret past as a bit of a science geek during her school days. But hey, science and storytelling make a surprisingly magical concoction! Currently, Marisa calls Woking, UK, her home sweet home, where she resides with her trusty squad, including her husband, three amazing kids, and a furry four-legged friend named Copper.

‘The Reckoning’ is the third book in the Altereds series by British-based author, Marisa Noelle. Silver Melody returns for the next chapter in this story of the planet’s struggle to rejuvenate itself. President Bear’s reign of terror has come to an end, the evil Earl has been neutralised on his mountain and Silver’s mother has been rescued.

There are fewer than three million survivors of the virus and Silver knows she has to play a large part in the successful rejuvenation of the planet in the absence of her father. The crops start to fail and Silver is wracked with anxiety. In addition, she is preoccupied with trying to coax her mother from her catatonic state and is plagued by haunting dreams; she hopes they’re nightmares but what if they’re premonitions?

Told in the present tense, we often see the action from the perspective of Silver in the first person. We also spend time with Eli, a survivor of Earl’s experiments, who struggles to fit in with his peers.

There are fewer action scenes in the first part of this story with more emphasis on soul-searching and moral panics, so the pace is arguably a little stodgy in places. We reconnect with many of the characters from the first two books and I suggest readers start at the beginning of the series to fully appreciate how the plot has developed.

As with many dystopian ideas, a pivotal aspect of the earlier stories is the presence of a virus unleashed onto an unsuspecting world. Inevitably this still plays a part with mutations, vaccines and antibodies all being mentioned. These nouns have become all too familiar over the last year and this may be a little too close to home for some readers.

The author makes very good use of foreshadowing as the momentum builds and the climax beckons. I was reminded of the march of the dead army in Game of Thrones and was intrigued to see how Silver et al would succeed in spite of overwhelming odds against this existential new threat. I was fully engaged with this struggle but confess to feeling a little deflated by the ending.

Whilst it’s always difficult to maintain momentum across several books, readers who have enjoyed the previous Altereds stories will no doubt appreciate this conclusion to the saga. I award four stars.

The Reckoning by Marisa Noelle is the final book in her The Unadjusteds trilogy. Refresher: The Unajusteds is a YA Dystopian story, with Silver Melody, our wonderful teenage heroine. Silver is very strong, fast and has abilities that make her special. In a world with most people having been altered with enhancements, Silver was one of those that were unadjusted, but her powerful abilities continue to grow.

In the last book, Silver and the team managed to defeat the evil Earl, and rescue her mother (though she is still catatonic). All Silver cares about the finding a way to use her healing power to bring her mother out of her unconscious state. With her father away to find a woman who knows how to bring his wife out of the state she is in, Silver is determined to help her mother. But things start happening, the crops and land are suffering, and they need Silver to help clean and heal the crops. Besides working on her mother, Silver is having horrific dreams every night, and she is worried if these are just nightmares, or are they a vision of what is yet to come.

Silver begins to spend time with Eli (who was saved by Silver against his torture by Earl), as he convinces her to experiment together to increase and learn more about her powers. As her powers begin to increase, even to some dangerous levels, Silver becomes more and more belligerent against her friends, since she just wants to help her mother, and experiment on her powers. Her friends and the president become concerned at her reckless actions, and she turns more and more to Eli. When the nightmares get more violent, especially the “yellow eyes”, she begins to realize that someone (Eli? Entity?) is trying to steal her powers, and her visions are real. Silver will need to ensure her friends and team that is she is herself again and they need to be ready for the upcoming battle that is forthcoming. I loved seeing most of her friends/team from the previous books, especially Matt.

What follows is an exciting and intense adventure that once again pits Silver and her friends against an evil powerful and dangerous entity, as well as the creatures, birds, animals, hellhounds they come across. From start to finish, this was filled with action, danger, violence, with a number of tragic events along the way. To tell too much more would be spoilers, and would ruin it for you.

The Reckoning was a very well written, intense, violent and emotional story line that held my attention throughout. Marisa Noelle did a fabulous job giving us an exciting story, wonderful heroine (I loved Silver, as she made a great heroine) and great secondary characters. The ending was exciting, wild and emotional and a fitting finale; though it was definitely a surprise epilogue.

*I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

Six months after the terrifying events at Earl’s mountain, Silver Melody and her friends are attempting to rebuild their lives in the safety of an enclosed community. They are using Silver’s father’s genetic expertise to create crops, and they are settling in and slowly recovering from the trauma of the previous years. For many, hope is taking its first tremulous steps back into their lives.

Silver knows that there is darkness on the horizon, though. She is plagued by haunting dreams of blackened crops and a huge, shadowy figure with yellow eyes engulfing the entire community. Silver struggles against an undercurrent of anxiety and feels pressure from all sides as her friends’ expectations mount and she tries to please everyone. She feels very alone.

Bubbling within Silver are intriguing new powers that she both fears and desires. What is she capable of? If only she could get some space to learn about her new, secret abilities.
Then there’s Eli. Rescued from captivity during their last mission, he is surrounded by an air of mystery. Silver can sense an affinity with Eli, a shared understanding that comes from isolation and the weight of being different. As their bond intensified and Silver’s exploration of her powers exposes unimaginable surprises, she must face a choice – and whichever path she takes will have life-changing consequences.

The Reckoning is the thrilling conclusion to Marisa Noelle’s Unadjusteds trilogy. Although the novel is slower in pace than the previous two, it is packed with an intense plot that keeps the reader’s heart racing. The familiar and beloved characters from the previous novels are still key in Silver’s story, as their lives, hopes and fears continue to intertwine. Noelle is skilled at writing emotion, and this novel is full of heart-wrenching and joyful moments in equal measure. Silver is an incredibly engaging protagonist; complex and wise, fierce and loyal, caring and selfless. However, her flaws and limitations are sensitively portrayed by Noelle – Silver is not just a heroine protecting her friends, she has constant battles within herself, facing demons that threaten to crush her.
The setting of Noelle’s imagined world is unique and vibrant. The threat of the dark figure that hangs over the novel is incredibly effective – the reader desperately wants to turn the pages but can’t shake the feeling of lingering tension. The plot builds in intensity, leading to gripping action scenes and moments of heart-stopping revelation.

The Reckoning is a powerful end to the trilogy, continuing Noelle’s signature style of intense action and emotion. Although I was excited to read the novel and absorb myself in Silver’s story once again, I was sad to read the final few pages and realise that the end was… the end. It’s been a privilege to be part of Silver’s journey over the three novels, and it’s very special to know that her world will always be available, just the turn of a page away!

Thank you to Marisa Noelle for an advanced copy of The Reckoning in exchange for an honest review. And a huge thank you for giving me the opportunity to read and review each novel over the last few years, it’s been wonderful.

I’ve enjoyed the adventures and the powers depicted in the first two books. I had issues with Silver’s character in book two, but she redeemed herself and I was intrigued about where the new threat was going to take things. I was looking forward to The Reckoning.

It’s an interesting choice when an author deliberately sends her main character on a negative development arc. Silver spends the first half of the book arrogant, selfish and so self-absorbed that I wanted someone (preferably a bulk) to shake some sense into her. I really went off her.

As the story and Silver’s development progresses, she comes full circle and you root for her again. I wish we could’ve seen more of the other characters and their abilities, rather than the narration fixating on Silver and Eli – especially as it’s impossible to connect to the latter because you know not to trust him.

In true Noelle form, however, it comes together seamlessly.

Silver comes back to herself, the threat manifests, and our band of survivors have to come together to face impossible odds (again). The pacing takes a long time to build, with a large portion of the book being character-focused. Once events gain momentum, you don’t have time to figure out what’s going on: the danger is here and it’s real. It made the character development more pronounced, although the tension may have benefitted from longer to build.

The enemy was unclear. It wasn’t a person or a known threat. Formless and menacing, it’s hard to identify exactly what it was, which undermined it for me: a deranged, power-hungry maniac had more impact than something illusive.

The book was a lot of fun. As a young adult science-fiction novel, it touches on a lot of important themes, not least that no one is incorruptible and that relationships are complicated. There were times I identified with the messages, and times I sensed it was aimed at a younger audience. It was a good balance between the fate of the world, and personal problems.

Given the current climate, it’s easy to identify with the despair and helplessness of humanity trying to survive when the world turns against you. An invisible, deadly threat is something we can all relate to.

I enjoyed this book, and liked watching everything come together. Very mixed feelings on the ending (no spoilers) but it does make me intrigued where this will go next.

If you’re enjoying the series, or looking for a new YA science-fiction to binge, then The Unadjusteds books are entertaining reads. The Reckoning works for a late-teen audience reaching the point in their lives where they want to establish who they are. If that’s your thing, then a definite recommendation.

This book is action-packed dystopian fiction. Which is normally my ideal genre. I was super sad once this book ended. I really enjoyed this three-part series. I am looking forward to seeing what else Marisa Noelle is going to do in the future.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dystopian fiction.

The Reckoning is the third and final installment of the Adjusteds series and what an ending it is!

There isn't as much action packed adventure in this third book as the other two however, we see Silver trying to navigate her new powers and finding that she has powers neither she nor anyone knew were possible.

To help harness her growing number of powers she enlists new friend Eli who was rescued from the grips of Earl during the second book. Eli helps Silver try to control and master her powers while also keeping a huge secret himself. Will this secret make or break this new friendship and possible romance?

I'm trying not to accidentally give any spoilers here but this is a finale that you don't want to miss! Can Silver gain control of the mass of powers she has acquired or will they be her downfall?

The ending to this book was very unexpected and I did not see it coming! It's a thinker for sure!

Once again Marisa Noelle throws us into this world and I found myself immersed in the lives of the characters we have been following on this journey!

Things are finally back to normal for everyone. They have defeated Earl, and Silver can breathe easily. Except, things aren’t going to plan, and Silver is having a hard time coping. It doesn’t help Matt has become overprotective and a bit controlling. So meeting Eli is a nice break from the chaotic mess in her mind. Their friendship might be just the thing Silver needs.

This is a tough review to write. Noelle put us in a pinball machine and tossed us around as she played. I found myself irrationally angry with Matt. He was controlling and stifling. It’s no wonder Silver spent a lot of time with Eli. But this is the couple you want to pull together and work out to save the world. They have always done what they needed to get things done. When Matt was at his worse, I was cheering Noelle for writing him so well that I felt such emotion. Overall, an addicting and satisfying read and conclusion to the trilogy.

This was a ride; the emotional aspects, relationships, DEATH. I normally don't let books get to me (thanks to having an emotionally difficult job), but this one was really close.

Then that ending came. At first I wasn't a fan. Didn't hate it, but didn't love. I thought about it for a few days, and while I don't advise anyone to do this particular ending, Marisa Noelle did it well. She laid the correct foundation so that it wasn't out of nowhere and yet it was still surprising enough that it made me think about how I felt about it, which then makes it more memorable for me in the future.

Plus, Matt didn't die and that's all I was asking!

Recommended 15+ for language, violence, death, and other topics not appropriate for younger readers.

The third and final installment of The Unadjusteds Trilogy was disappointing. It had far less action, focused more on teenage drama/angst, and the whole time I'm frustrated with the MC because she keeps avoiding something/trying to make herself believe it's nothing when she's been through 2 books of stuff like this happening! *frustrated scream*
Then the anti-climatic ending, which gives me the impression that everything could've been pointless.
I had high hopes for this series, but it didn't deliver for me.

I’ve been on a journey with Silver and her friends since she started her mission in book 1 of the trilogy, The Adjusteds.

Book 3 takes a more serious turn than books 1 and 2. Silver Melody has lost many friends throughout the saga in deadly situations and is now dealing with post-traumatic stress.

Her mother is in a catatonic state and Melody can’t do anything to help her. With her father away on a mission Melody is vulnerable and hurting. She convinces herself that even best friend, Paige doesn’t have time for her.

In addition, Melody has assimilated new, dangerous powers that she can’t control and is having dark, foreboding visions. The village’s crops are failing too, is the answer more genetic mutations or is something more sinister at work?

Melody becomes alienated from her friends and boyfriend, finding an ally in Eli, another victim of mad scientist, Earl.

The third book focuses more on the characters and the impact of being survivors in a post-apocalyptic world. I felt like I really understood the full character of Silver Melody during this book. The description of her internal struggles was realistic and relatable. Silver may be an exceptional specimen, but she’s still a teenager who is struggling with her feelings and place in the world.

In The Reckoning, the character of Matt displayed some traits that made me empathise with Melody against him. I could understand how she began to spend more time with Eli than Matt. One particular suggestion with regards to their future irritated me. However, in a world were most of the population has been decimated, I could imagine this scenario happening. These incidents left me thinking that maybe Melody should be an independent woman 😉

In the second half of the book, drama and action-charged scenes take over. Noelle makes these scenes come alive in her characteristic fashion. I liked the contrast between these scenes and the slower, emotional segments near the beginning. Throughout The Reckoning, foreshadowing is used to great effect and alert the reader to an evil presence.

I didn’t want the series to end, but the pace kept moving forward, bringing the series to a close. I could not have predicted he finale of The Reckoning and the series. I love not knowing where a story will go! Suffice to say, Sci-fi and experimentation feature strongly.

To finish, The Reckoning was a fitting ending to an emotionally charged and thrilling dystopian series. The lively and colourful characters of The Unadjusteds jumped off the pages and into my imagination, so it’s not really the end for them.

I'm not sure how I missed adding this to Goodreads, but I didn't see it on my Goodreads Challenge. This is the final installment to the Unadjusteds trilogy, and while it's not my favorite in the series, you can still get caught up in the mystery and building tension. Many thanks to Marisa Noelle and Zooloo’s Book Tours for providing me with an ARC copy of The Reckoning with a request for an honest review.

Marisa Noelle is a master of the dystopian landscape. The third novel in the Unadjusteds series knocked my socks off. Much like the first novel, I couldn’t get enough and read both Rise of the Altereds and The Reckoning over two days. It took me through all the highs and lows you expect in a great series.

Even though I spent most of the book being angry at Silver and Matt, the writing had me caught up in my emotions. For me, this is the mark of a remarkable novel. Marisa made me angry, then she made me cry, and finally, I felt joy. I had a fantastic time reading this series. So, it is my pleasure to award The Reckoning a full 5 out of 5 stars.

In my review of The Unadjusteds, I stated that Silver’s story compares well with Katniss and Tris. I still feel this way and recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good dystopian thrill ride. The Unadjusteds brings something new and fresh to the table that you can’t find just anywhere.

Those characters became my friends. I am not ready to let them go... So many battles fought, so many emotions, so many deaths...

Like the two others books in the series, the book ends with an epic battle. There isn't as much action throughout the book than the previous ones. but I liked seeing Silver learning to control her new abilities (even if she didn't know most of them).

Like ever, Silver is one amazing heroine. A normal girl, who became more with each fight. It was beautiful to see her grow.

Many thanks to the author for the complimentary e-copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Oh boy…

I’m going to do this review a little differently. I feel I have to start off with the positives in hopes that they don’t get lost in the negatives.

First and foremost, this is the best written of the trilogy, and the best written story I’ve read by the author so far. The problems that I had with the pacing in the first two books are nonexistent. I wasn’t expecting such a strong finish in this regard, but I’m glad the series goes out on a high note.

The character interactions are also stellar. What helps is that there aren’t more than a dozen to keep track of (plus, the bulk of the book remains in one area), so I connected with all the big players in a deeper way than I had in the previous books. Being able to do this rounded out the action and suspense, which made for a satisfying ride.

I liked Silver more than I did in the first two books. Not that I despised her before, but she’s much more human in this novel. This is likely due to the author’s better crafting ability, which is always a good sign. I adore characters that make me care, and I will also back authors that are capable of doing so.

Now the cons…

These next two points are spoiler-ish, but I can’t discuss them without coming right out and addressing them by name. They’re also too big of issues for me to overlook. They are the sole reasons why this book went from a 5 star rating down to a three.

I’m not the biggest fan of time travel. Never have been, never will be. If it’s used sparingly or it’s not overly explained, I can go along with the idea. Hell, I love all the Back to the Future movies, and I wouldn’t if I was too critical of the premise.

So, time travel is not my cup of tea, but I’ll drink it under the right circumstances. This was not one of those times. The trilogy falls in the science-fiction genre, and while the genetic modifications are a little out there, most of them are within the realm of science. Altering time is not there, especially in how it’s introduced. Much of this book feels like it jumps from science-fiction into fantasy, and this does the trilogy a disservice. I believe it could have gone out on a strong finish had the author kept the genre on the same train of thought she’d started with.

Time travel in itself wouldn’t have been as grating if wasn’t coupled with the dead not staying dead. One of the worst cliches an author can do is kill off someone only to bring them back right at the end. It’s cheap emotional manipulation and renders my journey with that character, and how their deaths impact the main character, pointless.

There is no readability with the trilogy. The punches have been pulled. The last thirty pages ruined what was a pretty decent story.

I was so, so excited when this book got going, and it pains me to say that it wasn’t worth my excitement. I only recommend this book if you’re someone who must complete a series. Otherwise, make up your own ending after book two.

BUT… Don’t give up on this author. This book shows me that she has so much potential, and I want to read more by her. One of the reasons I’m so upset is because with a better ending, this book is incredible. Despite how disappointed I am, I’m glad to have found her.

A good finale to the Unadjusteds trilogy! It had good pacing and lots of action which is always a plus. I’m so sad that Einstein died :(

My only qualm is the end of the book and how it finished. It felt like a bit of a cop out to have them turn back time and bring everyone back.

Overall a great trilogy and I would definitely recommend it!
